A home for those who love almost everything about The Ticket (1310 AM, 96.7 FM, Dallas-Fort Worth), and who would like to discuss -- respectfully and fondly -- their thoughts on how (and whether) to eliminate the "almost."
MTC would never claim that it has had any influence on The Ticket. No, it would never do that.
However, I do note that since the previous post, All-Pro has changed the way it pitches its “we bought up all the steel from our suppliers” plug.
Previously, it was “we have all the steel,” which, as noted in the previous post, made it sound like All-Pro had monopoly pricing power over foundation steel.
Recently, Ticket pitchmen have begun saying, in effect, “the price of steel has been increasing, so we bought up all the steel so we can lock in these lower costs.” Of course, this does not address All-Pro’s ability to impose monopoly pricing. But it’s a less-scary formulation that makes it sound like All-Pro is doing something nice for you.
Maybe one of you will remember: Today, Craig "Junior" Miller expressed his admiration for the new movie, "Power of the Dog." What he forgot, I think, is that The Musers interviewed the author of the novel on which it based, Don Winslow, a year or so back.
Check me on that. The reason I recall this is that I am a major Don Winslow fan, read many of his novels. But my memory of the interview is dim; anyone else remember this?
Nope, I'm kinda wrong. It looks like The Shake Joint was substituting for The Musers on July 5, 2017. Or maybe for one of the other shows. It was Sean Bass who interviewed Don Winslow.

RIP, Howard Hesseman. Man oh man did I love me some WKRP in Cincinnati. What an amazing show. The tunes alone were worth the price of admission. Hesseman's Dr. Johnny Fever was the quintessence of what it meant to be a DJ when DJ were THE tastemakers. Rock DJs were influencers long before such a term entered into our lexicon. The JF character was no caricature. Just ask anyone in radio from the late 60s to the early 90s. I bet Rhynes, Dan, Joonz, and Jub are pouring one out tonight. Ditto, Gordo. I know I sure am. Oh, and the intro and outro theme songs: The former a poignant, bittersweet classic. The latter, a balls out rocker!
They don't make 'em like that anymore. And I hate that.
Stay hard, Mr. Hesseman, you contributed greatly and will be missed.
"All right, Cincinnati, it is time for this town to get down! You've got Johnny—Doctor Johnny Fever, and I am burnin' up in here! Whoa! Whoo! We all in critical condition, babies, but you can tell me where it hurts, because I got the healing prescription here from the big 'KRP musical medicine cabinet. Now I am talking about your 50,000 watt intensive care unit, babies! So just sit right down, relax, open your ears real wide and say, "Give it to me straight, Doctor. I can take it!" --Dr. Johnny Fever
So, if form holds, I'm expecting to see Sirois move into Tier 1 Varsity status by the Summer's end. Form as in it took about 5-6 months in toto of Jake being included in the Varsity all-skates (including a few months or so pre-Rhyner's "Irish My Ass Exit" and the big show shakeup announcement) before he was made a Varsity host. Well, over the past 6 months we've seen Sirois cohost NaD damn near as much as Norm, as well as fill in as host for every time-slot. Not as a fill-in show (though he has), but as the fill-in cohost for, say, an absent Bob or George. This is exactly what took place in the months leading up to Jake's promotion. And now we have Sirois at the Super Bowl. Not only is he there (which, really isn't necessary), but he's been the focal point of every show. It's Sirois did this, Sirois did that. Here's another segment devoted to Sirois's antics, and another where he tells the story of ___. Etc., etc., etc. My guess is that after the NFL draft, Norm says adios and Boom in da House becomes the new 10-Noon showgram. Though it wouldn't surprise me if there is a reworking of the schedule, giving another hour to BidH, ending D&M at 9 or some such.
I'm looking for a major announcement by Norm either right before or on the last day of the draft.
Now, will a Tier 1 Sirois be a good thing? I'm not so sure. Up until now it's been a pretty easy ride for him. It's all shits and giggles, as they say. It's one thing to do a little research or spout off a one liner every now and again about the Rangers or whatnot. It's another thing to do it on a daily basis, week after week, month after month, year after year. The guy is more cut from the Gordo sports acumen cloth than a sports lover at heart host like the rest of the Varsity. As well, being up for anything guy will sooner rather than later wear thin, both on him and the listener. Again, it's one thing to be the fun loving uncle, it's another thing to be a parent. I also wonder what a Sirois who no longer feels the need to play nice will be like. He's shown on more than one or five occasions a side that's rather short and nasty tempered, rude, and a propensity to get personal. The Monty fantasy league incident alone gives one pause.
good stuff, 322. you might be onto something here. it wouldn't shock me either. i've always seen mike as someone who wants to be a celebrity to be well known. his twitch stuff and his time at the ticket pretty much says it all. i think his brother's the same way but only he seems more responsible and level headed and realistic. i think it'll be a good thing if mike becomes a full time host. he'll provide a spark that goes back to the old days when the ticket had a bite to it. i thought jake would fill that bill but in my opinion so far he hasn't.
That's true, Surly. But Danny used to go to Spring Training trips (can't recall if he ever went on a Super Bowl trip, can you?) and yet he never cohosted one show, much less every show, multiple times. And in the case of NaD, countless times. Recall too that Danny was producing and going to Spring Training and whatnot during the "Get off the sick, Greggo" days. Plenty of sustained absences for him to have filled in as an official cohost. When Norm's gone, Sirois IS the cohost. While it's true that Rhyner had Corby, so perhaps a 3rd wasn't as necessary, Cat could've easily slid in Danny, kept the 3 host lineup going, and next man upped the rest of the behind the scenes/JV crew. I mean, isn't that what D&M do on every absence of one of the 3? It's not just the SB trip, but the trip in conjunction with cohosting on all shows, multiple times. Including the morning show, which Jake did as well. Anyways.
Forgot to say/reiterate that I think this trip and the way he's being featured accompanied by all the cohosting is pointing toward something bigger. The '20 trip was akin to Danny at ST.
Anom 8:36 while you may be right, he had said somewhere in the past he was looking at a specific number, something like 50 years on air as a retirement date. I think that date was sometime next year but we shall see. Does anyone know when his contract is up? Like everyone else, I don't see him going much longer.
Isn't he the K of the K&C Masterpiece? If so, that's an awfully rare bird. That is, leaving a prime hosting job, and one with a life long buddy as partner.

ReplyDeleteDifferent “Power of the Dog” book. It’s not based on the Winslow one. It’s an older book from the 60’s

Kevin: You're right. Funny thing is -- I READ the non-Winslow POWER OF THE DOG and it's sitting on my shelf right now.
