A Blast from a Radio Guy -- Just Call Me PACO
REMINDER: I WILL DELETE "ANONYMOUS" COMMENTS AND THOSE I FIND GRATUITOUSLY VULGAR, INSULTING, INCOMPREHENSIBLE, OR JUST GENERALLY ANNOYING, IN MY SOLE AND UNREVIEWABLE DISCRETION.
I had prepared a lengthy post based on a communication I received from a radio industry insider who claims to have information from The Ticket, iHeart, and other industry scuttlebutt regarding the departures from the Ticket that resulted in The Freak and the Dan and Jake podcast.
But it contained information that was somewhat sensitive, and, of course, not verifiable by me. That isn't always a disqualification for inside information, but in this case, I decided that the opinions expressed -- this guy was not involved in the events of that time, at least not directly -- I thought the better course of action would be to let it stew.
So, yeah, this post is kind of a tease, but it needed a refresh anyway.
I have a super secret Canadien Girlfriend too. Totally real.
Seriously, I don’t understand this site sometimes. The ratings are actually not doing just fine, you can see it in the Reddit posts when the graph is posted showing mid days as a % of the Musers over time. Cat embarrassed himself on the stand, single handedly destroying their case after everyone here predicted Dan and Jake would get destroyed by the big Cumulus lawyers. And now the Musers are doing a podcast because the DZ is so unpopular that Cumukus stole their idea. Have a good one.
looks like somebody needs to be locked out of their devices after 8pm. sleep it off. you can look at your tablet, watch your videos again in the morning!
Cody, appreciate away. You don't need any start from me.
Despite what people think, Jeff Catlin and I are not in what I could call regular communication. In fact, we're not in much of any communication. Once in a while I'll lob him a question, and sometimes he responds, sometimes he doesn't. He also sat still for an AMA on this site a few years go, which was cool of him.
And it's true: I'm a Ticket fan, hence this site, and I think he deserves major credit for its continuing success, especially through the upheavals in the years since HeHoo (G Williams) got the HevHo. But our contact is very sporadic and arm's-length.
TSS is really coming into its own. Many of the verbal crutches and at times irritating tendencies have been all but eradicated. Seems like they’ve been listening to their shows and/or critiques and/or suggestions from management, and have learned from them. Digging what I’m hearing.
Sean and Mino are not Hosts. Neither can anchor a full segment on their own, and actually paired together, it might be worse. Its Bad. But they are cheap, and for a 2 hour midday span the ratings are not red-lining.
But Mgmt knows. Coworkers know. Sean and Mino know.
They Won. You lost. Go back to playing Zelda and driving uber. Maybe you were never that talented? Maybe you were never talented at all? Some people are just born losers.
But they are hosts. They are good hosts, doing the job you so desperately want but are not good enough to do. Like the comment above: they won, you lost. Sore loser, this one.
I thought TSS did fine as a file in. I don't know that I'd tune in to them everyday in the AM drive spot but for fill in duty they were good. Monty is a good yuk monkey and can do some entertaining bits. He's not Gordo but he's entertaining. Sean and Mino are fine when talking sports. This week I think is going to be a rough one. They are mostly fine at sports talk but they are not great at anything else and their bit was not good.
Wow oh wow. Was interesting to listen to the DZ lawyer roundtable and just what a sleazeball the program director seemed to be. He testified that the onslaught of negative Cumulus emails he received and entered into testimony was a direct result of the DZ pod. The DZ lawyer asked Cat to read the dates of the emails cumulus entered into the record and they were all dated before the DZ had started their pod. Cat was forced to admit that the pod couldn't have been the reason for his lies...I mean mistaken assumptions. POS
Hi, Phillip. Didn’t quite work out for either you or your clients the way you hoped it would. I mean, look at them. And your landmark labor law case wet dream. Pod. As if it never happened. All a dream. One you get to shrug your shoulders at and move on from. Others? Not so much. Then there’s opposing party. Oh yeah, they’ve truly suffered. Better numbers, lower overhead, better employee morale, more awards. Well, you get the picture.
Butt still hurts, doesn’t it, LAL. Nothing daddy’s money can’t fix, right?! Yep, just like always.
I think they kinda do. These are sponsored segments. I agree some hosts are better at it than others.
Slightly unrelated, Sponsored segments have imho always been the Achilles heal of KTCK success.
Sometimes there is a sports story that merits spending an hour+straight on it. And then, in the middle of it, they will contractually have to do community quick hits, e-news or Gordo’s corner (RIP).
Once the Musers retire, whoever replaces them should definitely scrap the 8:40 bit characters. Gordon has the voice/impersonation talent AND the writing ability...that's not something that anyone can copy. The 8:40 segment can still be entertaining but it doesn't have to be a skit.
I actually think all the fill in shows have done wonderful the past few weeks! Especially today they were fantastic. I think the talent at the station is the best it’s EVER been! We cut out a lot of the fat the past few years thanks to our fearless leader Jeff Catlin!
Also remember to listen to the Musers Podcast on all Podcast Platforms!
Just want to make sure I’m getting you. Peter Welpton, a Ticket employee, kindly leaves a monthly comment containing ratings numbers and his own analysis. This gesture bothers you so much, that you’re unable to contain yourself. To the point where you go from sarcasm, using a variant of Peter’s name as your handle, to out and out vitriol. All the while replying to your own comments. Yes, it’s that obvious.
To paraphrase Dale Hansen: I don’t understand your world, but unfortunately you’re a part of mine.
While they are on their month-long vacay, hopefully the Musers are figuring out a way to not have to do the CA local time of 4-7 when at training camp. Pre-recorded segments, interviews? Replay podcast episodes? Might as well at this point
Sam is butt hurt and holds a vendetta against Cat because Cat told Sam that he wasn’t talented enough to be a host. The truth hurts bud. Time to move on.
Blake is making far more than he ever made, and Jake is making as much or more. So maybe Mrs Dan isn't as thrilled, but I don't know why Mrs Jake and Mrs Blake wouldn't be stoked.
Paid subbie numbers are only half the story, if that. It seems like they are killing it for their advertisers. Qualis and Community Mechanical in particular seem to love those boys and continue to throw more and more money at the boys from all the business they’re getting directly from the dumbzone. Their GSE as a huge success and so was their wataburger remote this past week. If you build an incredible loyal following of 2,500 people that are willing to spend $500 per year on your product (between subscription fees, merch, using the services of advertisers), that’s the same amount of money as 125,000 people spending $10 per year on your product. The sit ins, reading birthdays, and schilling for advertisers so hard like dam does might not build a huge audience. But it does build an incredibly loyal audience. The boys are building an incredibly loyal audience, even if it isn’t growing in numbers, I think it exactly the type of audience advertises will fall all over themselves to get a piece of.
I am not a radio expert but I find WiP to be superior to TSS in the 1 to 3 based on a 2 day sample size. I think TSS is fine but not great. I don't know if WiP is great but I enjoy them more. The transition from The Invasion to WiP has been pretty seemless this week, no drop in energy from one show to the next. Monty and DJ just seem to have more command of the show than Sean and Mino. I think they are more relaxed and actually listen to each other better. With Sean and Mino I often feel like they are so focused on what they are going to say next that they don't really listen to what the other one is saying. It makes there convestations stillted to me. Monty and DJ sound more natural and flowing to me both in their fill in and on Sundays. I do think TSS has improved but not at the rate I would have hoped. The TSS is still better than most shows on the Fan and I listen to them more than I did THZ.
I remember those days as well. That's really the question with WiP I think. Are they good as a Sunday show and fill-ins but would they be over exposed by doing it every day? I can remember thinking B&S were pretty good but by the end of their time as a fill-in show I was ready for them to be done. The attempts of B&S as a regular show just reinforces that. Will that be the case with WiP? I guess you don't know until you let them try.
If Monto ever gets a ft hist gig, the very same people who've sung his praises will never shut up telling us how spare he is. I've been around long enough to remember when Mino was reddit's chosen one. And now....
People thought Mino was a great board op, a decent host when paired with Monty, and a decent producer for the hardline. No one ever thought Mino could handle hosting a show with another boring ass host like Sean Bass. Mino was decent when paired with someone with actual talent (Monty) and Sean was also decent when paired with someone with actual talent (Jake). The mistake was pairing them together. Neither of them have anything interesting to say beyond middling sports analysis. The beauty of the ticket was the hosts letting you in to their personal lives (except Gordon who is so immensely talented he can get away with it). Sean and Mino have either the most boring personal lives in the history of the world, or they purposely hide everything. That’s fine for espn radio, but ticket fans should demand more from their hosts
You've spilled a lot of bytes these last hours in attempt to convince others of inventions, a frighteningly immature understanding of how things work, and out and out lies.
Now do The Freak was never given the tools to succeed thing. That's at least another full 24 hr tine kill for you.
Controversial take: I enjoy the Musers, The Hardline, The Muser new pod and The Dumb Zone. Unlike most idiots on this board, it is possible to enjoy a myriad of Ticket or Ticket adjacent content simultaneously.
If Only- Musers 6-9 Donnie Sean MattMc 9-12 WiP 12-3 HL (Mino producer) 3-7
-Invasion needs 1 less hour, & Seabass would work better as 1/3 rather than Co. -WiP can easily carry 3hrs. A born-again BaD/HZ. -Mino worked best in this HL role. But its a demotion. Maybe more practice with a new Sunday morn show.
It won't happen. But this would be a very solid 5yr lineup as retirement draws near for the Top Tiers.
Cat's an employee. His job is to get numbers . Regardless of what you think of him, he does his job and does it remarkably well. If you think a YouTube show with an audience that small, that niche, and that has already pretty much hit its ceiling is actual competition for ant Ticket show -- including The Top Ten and weekend shows -- you're either trolling (poorly so) or live in a bizarro fantasy world.
All content is competition. And the reason Cumulus Corporate fought TDZ so hard was to protect non-competes in other markets(guys in market 4 may have the money to fight it, market 60, not so much) . The reason Cumulus settled (and why TDZ settled w/o breaking non competes nationwide as bruneig wanted) was that by settlement time Cumulus had realized that TDZ leaving had little effect on their ratings. In fact as Peet’s reddit posts show, TDZ left and TT went on an absolute tear. I’d have to go get exact dates, but roughly TDZ left late June. Lawsuit settles in Sept. they had June, July and probably the August ratings by settlement time. It’s why they settled. C
Seeing how the show's ratings are excellent, how he and Donnie have cultivated a genuine friendship that extends beyond the workplace, that he is a team player/loyal to the brand/grateful to be there, and that his salary is "cap friendly," why would he not be renewed?
Let the howling begin after the June ratings were published. Funny that the top three stations in town are all Cumulus properties. https://radioinsight.com/ratings/dallas-fort-worth/?
21st in cume yet top of the ratings. It’s almost as if someone is a hater and/or just doesn’t understand how ratings work. Yeah, their cume sucks. But have you seen their TSL?
Laugh out loud moment yesterday. Dave was relating the story of the couple from South America who is taking a six-week (!) vacation in the US. Corby "What are they? Radio hosts with a morning drive time show?"
Work in Progress might be the best fill-in show the Ticket has had in their bench. Just a consistently funny and enjoyable experience. It also feels a lot more organic than other people thrown together. I don't mind the Sweet Spot but it really feels like they could lean more on Monty to make it even better.
I wish Monto would be made the official third. I also wonder if the reason he hasn't been is due to external factors such as health. There seems to be only one angle ever offered, and that's it must be Cat's -fill in the blank negative attribute-. Could be more to the story. On another note, I swear The Musers' on air time is beginning to resemble Imus', Stern's post '95, and a myruad of other syndicated hosts' actual time spent on air. Thing is, they're local and bring in nowhere near the revenue the aforementioned did/do. Kinda a head scratcher tbh.
Listening to the end of today’s Musers podcast, it’s pretty clear they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The shorter shows and more vacation are just to make sure they don’t burn out.
I am listening to today's episode. At the outset George told a story (and became very emotional) about a prank call he received initiated by a host who followed their morning show about 30 years ago. I won't get into the specifics of the story, go ahead and listen. It was interesting. But if you've listened, does anyone know who that host was? I am thinking Rocco, but I am not sure.
That sounds like Greggo for sure. They always talk about how Greggo took pranks to punitive levels when retaliating. I believe the early days of the Ticket were Musers in middays and the Hardline 3-7. Then the Musers moved to mornings after Skip and Curt Menefee left. I may have the timeline wrong as I started listening in 97.
I assumed it was someone Hardline adjacent from when Musers were 2-5.
The other options are Chris Arnold, which seems weird since he didn’t do bits like that; or Rocco. Rocco did bits, and a tone deaf prank call doesn’t seem out of the realm of the possibility. Though, upon reflection, Rocco wasn’t on right after the Musers & I thought that was stated.
Enough with these cringe drydock 8:40 bits from Temu. When it's time for contract renewals again, all Gordon needs to do is replay every 8:40 bit from the last month of dry dock and he will get a raise and negotiate another week off.
Will never understand why the fill ins do anything other than either play best of 840 bits or do something entirely different, something that in no way attempts to be funny.
Some people may not find the fill in 840s funny and that’s fine, but using your opportunity to just keep replaying old audio is a punt and we don’t want to do that.
Love coming to Bizarro World and reading how the midday shows are actually *really* good and that the fill-in shows are incredible too and that Cat is the best thing to have ever happened to radio.
u/peet2 posted The Ticket ratings to reddit. And he's calling it quits after Dec 2025. I assume, like everything "on the internet", it's not worth the grief - see the genius post up above on July 4th.
You mean the one where the same person keeps using his handle as their own? The person who is obsessed with Cat? The person who's either mentally and/or cognitively challenged and/or is either a disgruntled former employee and/or works in some capacity (real or perceived) for one of the nothingburger pods, thinking they're somehow engaged in a psy-ops mission?
If their sub #s continue on this trajectory, and if this site continues on, there will be nothing to discuss but an autopsy by autumn of '27. If after all the vitriol , vulgarity, and flat out lunacy has not made Plainsman shut down what was once a site that prided itself on its genteelness, nothing will.
I had prepared a lengthy post based on a communication I received from a radio industry insider who claims to have information from The Ticket, iHeart, and other industry scuttlebutt regarding the departures from the Ticket that resulted in The Freak and the Dan and Jake podcast.

Seeing how the show's ratings are excellent, how he and Donnie have cultivated a genuine friendship that extends beyond the workplace, that he is a team player/loyal to the brand/grateful to be there, and that his salary is "cap friendly," why would he not be renewed?
DeleteLet the howling begin after the June ratings were published.
ReplyDeleteFunny that the top three stations in town are all Cumulus properties.

21st in Cume. Wow.
DeleteHaven't seen the numbers. How'd they fare vs The FAN? How do es this book compare historically to June books?

Deletei'll get them posted tomorrow - station was still #1, shares leveled off and Fan took a hit, especially at night.
DeleteThanks, Peter. @Check the Charts It's a bad bit. An ineffective bit. You're not good at this.

DeleteGo away, Sam. You lost.
DeleteSo now it’s against the rules to call Peet a mouthpiece for Cat and Cumulus?

Delete21st in cume yet top of the ratings. It’s almost as if someone is a hater and/or just doesn’t understand how ratings work. Yeah, their cume sucks. But have you seen their TSL?

DeleteLaugh out loud moment yesterday. Dave was relating the story of the couple from South America who is taking a six-week (!) vacation in the US. Corby "What are they? Radio hosts with a morning drive time show?"
ReplyDeleteWork in Progress might be the best fill-in show the Ticket has had in their bench. Just a consistently funny and enjoyable experience. It also feels a lot more organic than other people thrown together. I don't mind the Sweet Spot but it really feels like they could lean more on Monty to make it even better.
ReplyDeleteIt would be better it if had EA on it!
DeleteI wish Monto would be made the official third.
DeleteMonty will never be a host because of his mobility and unreliability due to his health.
DeleteListening to the end of today’s Musers podcast, it’s pretty clear they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The shorter shows and more vacation are just to make sure they don’t burn out.
ReplyDeleteI am listening to today's episode.
Delete30 years ago... they might've still been on early afternoons. That was pre Rocco, regardless.
DeleteIt’s was Chris Arnold. He called George and told him he lanced his mom in the neck with a pitchfork.
DeleteThat sounds like Greggo for sure.
DeleteI THINK THL were 1i-2, Musers 2-6 followed by Coop.
DeleteGeorge mentioned they were doing mornings at the time and he wouldn’t do cross talk afterwards, so Chris Arnold makes sense.
DeleteI assumed it was someone Hardline adjacent from when Musers were 2-5.
DeleteThe other options are Chris Arnold, which seems weird since he didn’t do bits like that; or Rocco. Rocco did bits, and a tone deaf prank call doesn’t seem out of the realm of the possibility. Though, upon reflection, Rocco wasn’t on right after the Musers & I thought that was stated.
Hardline was PM Drive on day 1. Skip was 6-9; Menefee was 9-11 & then Coop; Musers; HL; Sports Princess.
DeleteI honestly can’t remember exactly what the hours were. But after Skip was out, the hours stabilized to what they were before Norm/Dan/Jake exodus.
I really want to say THL was originally 4-8 or 5-8.
THL was og on at 11am.
DeleteSkip 6-9
DeleteMenefee 9-11
Hardline 11-2
Musers 2-5
Coop 5-7
Enough with these cringe drydock 8:40 bits from Temu. When it's time for contract renewals again, all Gordon needs to do is replay every 8:40 bit from the last month of dry dock and he will get a raise and negotiate another week off.
ReplyDeleteWill never understand why the fill ins do anything other than either play best of 840 bits or do something entirely different, something that in no way attempts to be funny.
DeleteSome people may not find the fill in 840s funny and that’s fine, but using your opportunity to just keep replaying old audio is a punt and we don’t want to do that.
DeleteWhat about doing something else? Make it your own.
DeleteLove coming to Bizarro World and reading how the midday shows are actually *really* good and that the fill-in shows are incredible too and that Cat is the best thing to have ever happened to radio.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's got an opinion and there are plenty more here that you don't seem to be reading

DeleteCat does his job rather well. Why dies that bother you so much? Why does it bother you at all?
Deleteu/peet2 posted The Ticket ratings to reddit. And he's calling it quits after Dec 2025. I assume, like everything "on the internet", it's not worth the grief - see the genius post up above on July 4th.
ReplyDeleteI don't blame him one bit. The fact he's riding it out until the end of the year is a testament to what a solid dude he is.
DeleteYou mean the one where the same person keeps using his handle as their own? The person who is obsessed with Cat? The person who's either mentally and/or cognitively challenged and/or is either a disgruntled former employee and/or works in some capacity (real or perceived) for one of the nothingburger pods, thinking they're somehow engaged in a psy-ops mission?
Delete^^^^** Bang fuccin on.
DeleteI think Dan and Jake leaving mentally broke some people. Evident on this forum and Reddit.
ReplyDeleteI second that
DeleteYup
DeleteIf their sub #s continue on this trajectory, and if this site continues on, there will be nothing to discuss but an autopsy by autumn of '27. If after all the vitriol , vulgarity, and flat out lunacy has not made Plainsman shut down what was once a site that prided itself on its genteelness, nothing will.
DeleteThe never ending need to defend Cat at all costs is the downfall of this site. Meow
DeleteThe never ending need to throw shade at Cat at all costs is the downfall of this site. Bark
DeleteWhat exactly is the "cost" of doing either of those things? Hmm?
DeleteThe former is obsessive pathetic behavior; the latter, refutation by analogy.
DeleteDo and dumb zone listeners know if they’re going or at training camp?
ReplyDeleteDo might. Not sure about Dumb Zone.
DeleteWhat's a Dumb Zone?
Delete*do any
DeleteYes I think they are at Training camp next week
