On the Road Again

Confessors, I know I've been absent a bit, and that is going to continue.  I'm about to hit the road again tomorrow, so to get a fresh thread started I'll throw out two half-assed sportsy opinions, which faithful readers will know are never likely to become fully-assed.

(1)   Jason Garrett's job will be saved through at least the 2019 season
by Guillain–BarrĂ© syndrome.

(2)   We're burying the lede here on Dez Bryant's failure to find a job to his liking.  Pundit after host after sportswriter has said "There are teams out there that Dez Bryant could help.  Wonder what's going on?"

And while most of them do acknowledge that he's a difficult handle, this aspect of his problem has been downplayed.

Men and women:  He was a real problem.

We saw it on "Hard Knocks," where he seemed to not be with the program, a headache in team meetings.

And what about those sideline rants?  It has been pointed out that audio proves that he was being rah-rah, being supportive, not being a bad guy.

Well lemme axes you a question, as Craig "Junior" Miller would say.  Make it two questions:

(i)  If you were a seasoned pro like many of the Cowboys were in Dez's heyday, would you like a manchild screaming at you like a high school sophomore to get up, get up, get up, come on, we can do it, etc. etc.?

(ii)  And would you like it coming from the guy who sneers at game prep, never ever learned to run a crisp route, didn't even seem to learn plays for the longest time, increasingly dropped balls, whined about not getting enough balls thrown his way, and generally didn't seem to care all that much about winning until the Cowboys were losing on game day?

Nope, I don't think Dez Bryant was a good teammate at all, and I don't believe any Cowboy who says he was.

And I think the league knows it and can't get very excited about giving much money to a guy who demonstrated during his entire career that he didn't get it -- receiving records notwithstanding.  When the headache overbalances the gift as the years go by, it's hard to find buyers for a hot potato.

Half-baked or half-assed.

Ben + Skin + Travis Frederick

Really, really good.  Forget about how Frederick's presence elevates B&S into listenability -- we're hearing a guy who will have a long broadcasting career after his football days are over.

All right, this post is a give-up.  I've been absolutely slammed and feeling very, very bad that I haven't given the faithful Confessor any fresh content in way too long.  Please accept my apologies.  I've got a contribution from a Confessor in the hopper, but I haven't even gotten to that.

So, uh, leave some comments or stuff.

Frozen Face Nipples

To pass a bit of your weekend time .  .  .  .

(1)  Is anyone else astounded/delighted/shocked by the fact that Gordon Keith is facing Bob Sturm in the Dallas Morning News DFW Sportscasters Bracket contest?  (DMN Sportscasters Bracket) As of this writing, the results are Gordon 51.65, Bob 48.35.  And does anyone think we will ever hear the end of it if Gordon, the least sportsy of the entire bracket, wins?  Or even if he doesn't?

Gentle Confessors, this illustrates something I suggest from time to time, but it bears repeating:  The fine stable of readers who comment on this site is not necessarily -- perhaps I should leave off the "necessarily" -- reflective of the Ticket fan base.  Now Gordon is a DMN personality himself, and he shows up on the teevee from time to time, so we may be getting a number of voters here who like Gordon from his non-radio work.

But even so, that he's gotten this far, and may win, reminds us that there are many media consumers out there who don't think bullying is the signature feature of Gordon's work, in fact, who like him a lot.  (Maybe the voters are doing a mass bit, but I doubt it.)  He and Corby by far take the greatest gobkicking on MTC, and, while Corby didn't make it out of the first round, he's probably also a lot more popular than someone whose only source of information on the popularity of Ticket guys is this site would think.  (Whoo.  Bad sentence.)   I would point to, uh, the ratings as proof.  It's not just the shaky competition.

(2) Cat must have lectured the programs on "managing the back end."  I am guessing this has to do with bringing segments smoothly to a close so Cumulus can pay for them with on-time commercials.  But does anyone know for sure what this phrase, sneeringly referenced from time to time by hosts and producers, means?

(3) CONFIDENTIAL TO KEVIN TURNER:

KT, KT, KT.

I have no idea of all the indignities to which you were subjected at The Ticket.

No one has disclosed to me the various humiliations you suffered at the hands of BaD, Mike R, and Mitchell Karasik.

The soul-killing tasks you were ordered to perform remain hidden to me.

But I believe I can say with a fairish degree of certainty that The Ticket never, ever required you to eat the beard clippings of a Dallas Cowboys rookie out of his lap.

Mmm.
