Bob and Dan Are Out

after many, many years, as The Dallas Hockey Stars' post-game show hosts.  Or is it just Bob?  Or just Bob and sometimes Dan?  I confess (of course) I do not hear much Stars pre- post- or during game on The Ticket so I'm not sure who is being replaced.

The Old Dumparoo

I happened to be tuned in at 2 PM yesterday when Bob disclosed the Stars announcement.  At the time it seemed like they were talking about both of them losing the gig, but the wording of the announcement gave me  the impression that only one person was being replaced.  So I dunno.   I thought sure someone would offer a comment on this to the last thread, as we have a number of hockey-loving Confessors, so if anyone can enlighten us I'd appreciate it.

I have a recollection that Bob and/or Dan had alluded to the possible end of their Stars-related broadcasting at the end of the season.

And indeed, Bob did not seemed stunned by this news.

However, I did think that both he and Dan, and Donovan, were a little surprised and maybe even a little hurt that the Stars did not make a single mention of the many years of service Bob/Dan have offered to the Stars and their fans.  And I gather it has been quite a long time -- did Bob say 13 years?  Again, I'd appreciate accurate info.  Whatever it was, I was very surprised to hear it.  I had no idea the Stars gig was so substantial and long-lived.

Makes me wonder if perhaps some friction had developed with the Stars.  I wouldn't think so -- Bob and Dan are the only show on The Ticket, and probably the only show in Cool Metro, that does some serious Stars-talk and who actually know something about hockey.  And nothing against Bruce or his new co-host, but Bob and Dan, or either one of them -- that's quality broadcasting. That's gold-plated DFW radio royalty, and I'm not being snotty.

So one would think that the old heave-ho would have been accompanied by at least some expression of gratitude.

It is unlikely to make anyone feel better, but in any event, this fetching lass and My Ticket Confession thank Bob and Dan for their long-time yeoman service to the Stars, and to the cause of hockey in Cool Metro, for the past whoa, long time.

  1. Farewell to Planet Bob. I wonder if this was mutual or if they got sacked. Bruce is pretty good for a hockey guy. I have gotten the feeling over the years though that being "The Hockey Guy" at the little Ticket was starting to wear on Sports Sturm, like he wanted to be known for something else. Maybe not having the responsibility for post game shows will give him some new impetus to show a little enthusiasm about stick and puck. The Five Minute Major often got lost in the other stuff they wanted to talk about, like TV shows I could not care less about.

I am still putting this new app to the test. Gotta say so far, gimme the old school radio waves or HD over this incessant buffering and dropped signal. More data to gather.

  2. Cat is doing an AMA over at GIML. How come you can never set something like that up for us, Plainsman?

    ReplyDelete
  3. According to said AMA Cat said Bob and Dan wanted out. Take that for what it is worth.

  4. First off, that girl looks to be all of 15. A bit on the creeper side of the aisle, Pman.

    Yes, BaD wanted out.

Dan only did the Stars gig to fit in, be a good soldier, and try and carve a bit of a niche when he first arrived-even though he doesn't know much at all about hockey. I guess it was assumed that because he's from a state above the Mason-Dixon Line, he'd know him some hockey. Wrong. So I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that Dan never wanted the duties in the first place; much less is he now lamenting that the gig is no more. I have a feeling Bob's affiliation with the Stars isn't quite yet over. Don't be surprised if he doesn't play more of a supporting role on the t.v. broadcast (e.g., between periods stuff, etc.), just as he has the past few seasons. Perhaps his role is expanding? I didn't hear the announcement, so I've no idea if there were things said that might lead one to think the story isn't over, at least for Bob. But, back to the original point: Bob wanted out of the postgame show. He's way way past the point to where he wants to do something like that for free. No matter how much he loves the sport. He gets paid to talk (Ticket), to write (FOX), to sometimes be in the booth (FC Dallas, Stars), and to sometimes be a studio analyst (Stars). No need to be up at the AAC until 12:00 am on a Saturday, get home around 1:00 am, then get up a few hours later and take 3 kids to church, etc.... for nothing. Besides, he does his own postgame of sorts during BaD.

cactus, I think you've misread the situation. Bob once told Ralph, on air, that his dream job has always been to be in the booth for an NHL team. As well, you must not follow Bob on Twitter; else you'd see that in no way, shape, or form does Bob find hockey a beating. Quite the contrary. The Five Minute Major gets in the way of stuff Dan wants to talk about, not Bob. That's Bob's baby, 100%.

  6. This is getting tiresome. I have gotten the error message the last 3 times I have tried to post. Run it back again.

Radish, I largely agree with you. The point I want to make is that the Major is a low priority on the show and hockey in general, unless there is a compelling reason to have a segment for it. It is often the 230 slot. I follow Bob on Twitter and read his blog. I am going to get my hockey fix one way or the other. Bob has to sign off on the idea of pushing hockey aside on the show in favor of discussing other topics. He does it for the same reason Norm doesn't talk about it very much. I have no illusions about it. Norm might be right with his estimate of 5% of us listening giving a dang about hockey. Bob can get in depth and sportsy on the blog or get face time on TV. He can fulfill that part of his sports need elsewhere. I still do think that he has tried to outgrow the moniker of Hockey Guy on the radio. In the environment of other hockey guys he certainly wears it happily.

  7. Both did the show to get more $$$ to get bigger houses, period.

    @cactusflinthead:

Bob has two big issues from his calling NHL dream. .

1- He never played the sport professionally.

2- There are dozens (hundreds) of former hockey players near his age who have sports management/sports broadcasting/communication degrees who are looking for jobs and know the sport much better than he does. Plus, there are AHL/CHL announcers who have paid thie dues in calling games for the past seasons while Bob has made $$$ on DFW radio.

Bob is "book smart" with the Stars, but that is all.

Summer Bash gave the listener how Ferall who had issues with PBP. Ferrall gave his story on being the Thrshers PBP radio guy. Sturm will have the same issues if not worse since he is rarely be succinct.

  8. What professional sports did Ralph Strangis play?

What professional sports did Brad Sham play?

What professional sports did Joe Buck play?

What professional sports did Bob Costas play?

    I'll stop there.

  9. I could have sworn Gordon said there were two big TV deaths to report on Muse, but we only got one. (Lisa Robin Kelly.)

I haven't checked Grubes Is My Leader (GIML) so I don't know how Cat did the Ask Me Anything (AMA) thing as reported by 453. If it's some kind of real-time technical thing, Blogger doesn't support it, or at least I'm not going to take the time to find out if it does.

If the suggestion is that I submit to questioning, I'll take that under advisement at a time of my choosing. I'm disinclined to do it because I don't know much about The Ticket other than what appears here, and much less about Sports, and I don't want to answer questions about myself because the answers are too, too depressing, especially to me.

Of course, comments may always include questions directed to me (other than things like "why are you such a s_________?") which I may or may not answer. And there's always email, which I may or may not answer. (To date, I don't think I've ever failed to respond to an email, although sometimes I respond by posting the emailer's point.)

Damn, I missed the black quarterback talk. Have to catch up on The UnTicket. Did they talk about legacy BQ Marlin Briscoe?

A very happy birfday to Jeremy Moran, the man with the most difficult job at The Ticket -- technical support for broadcasting that includes Gordon Keith.

  10. I think you misunderstood, Plainsman. No one is interested in you doing an AMA (no offense), but wondering why low-level Ticket personalities won't come here to do them.

  12. Looks like the big news in radio sports talk for the July book is the retreat of 105.3 The Fan.

While The Ticket won every weekday hour from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the target demo of men 25-54, ESPN 103.3 FM was second every hour, leaving The Fan bringing up the rear.

Keep in mind July was a month with lots of vacations at all three stations.

    Some numbers:

    Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the men 25-54 it was: The Ticket (7.8); ESPN 3.2; Fan 1.7

  13. Has anyone checked out RW's Friday post? He's tossed out a scenario that isn't half bad. Namely, Norm moves to mid mornings at ESPN. I can see that happening. It makes sense. One more thing. He definitely stops by MTC. He referred to The Ticket giving some JVs a chance to fill Norm's spot. "JV" in that particular instance, to my knowledge, is a MTC lingo original. There have been times when I was dang near certain that RW was posting up here. Especially when RAGE first started out. Now I'm certain. No way the use of "JV" in that way was a coincidence.

    ReplyDelete
  14. While I have no doubt that RW reads MTC (since he has plenty of free time on his hands now) I also know for a fact that the guys at the station have referred to the young up and comers as the farm system/D league/JV for a decade and a half. Maybe subconsciously it was picked up here and used frequently but that's a pretty common nickname for the station's up and comers and was not a MTC invention.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't know whether "JV" was my invention or not. I do know that I never heard it used on The Ticket before I used it to describe the non-host voices we hear on The Ticket. Whether it was used before that date on The Ticket to describe the same people, I dunno. I never heard that group of worthies referred to collectively using any word or phrase of any kind.

Nor, I should add, have I heard "JV" used on The Ticket since this site began using it.

But it matters not at all. If not being the inventor of "JV" is the worst thing that ever happens in my life, I'll have lived a pretty good life.

  16. Per Barry Horn's Twitter: It might be Ralph Strangis who might be without a gig, and soon.

  17. Richie predicted that Norm would be moved to afternoon drive on ESPN, basically taking over for Galloway once he retires.

    ReplyDelete
  18. D1P1, and I've never heard anyone at the station say JV or JVer or JVs. If they have, maybe it's because they've seen it here at MTC? We do know that every host except probably Norm stops by MTC.

  23. I'm with 5:03. Very very very few contributors to this site actually put their business out for all to see. This includes our congenial host and leader, Plainsman. This also includes myself. Having said that, it really matters not. What does matter is that thing that makes MTC great is the thoughtfulness of both its host and contributors. For the most part we all try our best. If you disagree with someone, say why you do. I disagreed with cactusflinthead, he in turn said where he thought I got things right, and where he still disagreed/further elucidated his original point. What he didn't do was say "you suck" or "you're an idiot," and sign off. If you think something, someone, or an opinion sucks, say why it sucks. To merely write Barry Horn and RW don't know what they're talking about and leave it at that adds nothing to the thread. Sorry, 4:03, I'm not picking on you, but you're the latest example of what I'm talking about. Sorry about the rant.

Right there with you, man. Unfortunately, and as I'm sure you know, this is the interwebs and there's no getting away from trolls, pranksters, idiots, and out and out nasty people who sit bravely in front of their platform of choice. Just know that we're lucky to have a place that's for the most part a pretty clean, almost rat free, ship to set sail in. Honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't been overrun by trolls already. Kind of thought it was heading that way a couple of months ago. Indeed I think the only thing that stopped it, and from Pman from putting her into permanent dry dock, was that things calmed down on the BaD to The FAN front. I've no idea where Pman's head was at, but I know if MTC was my baby, I'd have been pretty f'n close to giving up the ghost at that time. Them trolls be bad. . . .and I think some of them during that time were employees from The FAN.

  26. Loved the Elvis (P, not A) segment yesterday. Corby's questioning of why the Beatles still seem relevant to young folks while Elvis doesn't was spot on (and I'm a big fan of both). I've had the same thought in the back of my mind for years.

Hope Rhynes has that sit down with his daughter like he says he will. I've done the same with my kids. They still think the Beatles are cool while Elvis is a bit. But at least I tried.

  27. Teebox: I'm only halfway listening because doing some other things, so I'm not sure if they're at Crest -- although they are mentioning Infinitis, so I'm guessing yes. And the news is, it sounds great. Rick is taking his child to college, so Craig is manning the thing alone with a pro golfer whose name I've missed so far. Craig mentioned that Rick got the show some new equipment, and if so it's a success -- if this is a remote, where The Teebox has traditionally sounded underwater. So -- good work, Teebox.

And the show's interesting today, too, with the pro guy whose name I don't know.

I know Scott F wore out a good many listeners when he appeared on the air, but I was fascinated by his stories and that one in particular. Leaving 90% of his salary on the table to go call games for Atlanta? Cut loose the hot wife because she doesn't go along with it? Wow man, just wow. I doubt I would have had the guts to follow that dream without a bank account big enough to back me up.

Re: trolls. I'd like to say thanks to all concerned for the diligent refusal to allow trolls to get a toe hold. Too many forums and boards go down that road and die. Pman stays on top of the spammers, but it is up to us to call out trolls too.

Is vacation season not over yet? Damn, must be nice. Brace yourselves for another week of Black and Quack. I'd like to see them have another exchange of music. Make Rich listen to some more R&B crooning and Donnie gets a big dose of metal rage. Maybe do a movie variation.

I'll admit I read RW regularly. Whitt's End is a must for me. I don't always comment, but my mouse finds its way over there. Could not care less about the layers of pages. It is the same over at the DO. I don't seem to mind the constant barrage of negative, trollish comments over there directed at him. Sometimes he responds and sometimes not. I scroll past them most of the time. Perhaps it is because I expect him to get responses to the grenades he regularly lobs. I have no doubt whatsoever that some aggy in Twitterville used the word innuwindow about Manziel. Did anybody on the Ticket this week talk about the Deadspin article concerning his family background?

  32. Not trying to be troll worthy, but omg, how in the world does a 30 plus year radio veteran like Mike Rhyner be so completely inept and useless when it comes to live interviewing? His contribution to the Tony Romo interview with Corby was probably one of the worst I've ever heard in radio. I was cringing every time Mike asked a question. Asking questions to answers that Romo already answered, interrupting Romo's answers, asking questions that bordered on pathetic. I know Mike is a veteran radio guy like Norm, but good Lord that was horrible. I don't even like Corby but I will give him due respect in that he handled the interview wonderfully and pretty much carried the interview in spite of Mikes failings. I'm starting to see that the only contribution Mike brings to the program is his knowledge of old bands and occasional insight into baseball. Very sad to see that the person you thought was a radio veteran is nothing more than an old washed up DJ that has a passing fancy for baseball.

  33. Jeez, RW, that's a pretty harsh assessment of The Old Grey Wolf. I mean, what the what?, right? Is he nearly dead-n-gone? Or is he a white truck guy?

  34. @Anon 5:14 - Right there with you, brother. I thought the same thing when I read that.

On another note - RW took great pride in getting the "scoop" that Candice Romo is pregnant. As is my usual practice, once Muse finished up at 7:30 I switched to the Fan to listen to Mike Fisher.

Fish basically called out RW saying something to the effect that the family really didn't want the information out there until she was a little further along.

  35. The retirement of Galloway and the LMA of 103.3 to Cumulus proved another ESPN Radio move...Dan LeBatard is going national.

    http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/2013/08/media-column-new-dolphins-announcer-debuts-790-show-likely-going-national.html

    http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2013/august/dan-le-batard-taking-his-radio-show-national.html

He has done radio for ten years and the radio show is not owned by ESPN as Liberty owns the station, plus it is not Miami-centric. His show is really good with a full podcast online and is not overly predictable via segment so the listener knows when to turn off (ENews, GNG, Quick Hits, Daily...).

  38. rhynes hates interviews. colossal waste of time. I can't say I blame him. 90% of them aren't worth the TSL. Like a Jerry Jones press conference, somebody gotta listen, but it ain't gonna be me. Do I particularly give a shit if they wasted 40 minutes of air time talking about his playing weight or whatever other nonsense? No. I tuned out. Just like I did for every damn one of those 2 o'clock ass whippings they called the daily press briefing/circle jerk with Red Haired Jesus. If I never heard another minute of BS from the manure peddlers it would suit me fine. Where is Karl Pilkington when you need him?

If they sat around with Tones Romes and had the inconsequential interview it was about as meaningful as the gibberish spewed for the last six months in more serious venues.

  39. At BBQ, i'd be shocked if any employee from the fan was commenting over here. I guess it's possible that ex fan employees were, but I really doubt it. Not a whole lot of talk about The Ticket over there. I've been a little surprised by how little 1310 comes up in conversation....even during the whole bad radio drama thing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It's true that Mike's not a good interviewer -- he's not interested. You hear it a lot with people who know, or believe, that they're a lot smarter than the people they're interviewing. Many -- not all -- atheletes and other celebrities are (1) self-protective, and (2) do not express themselves extremely well, which makes for the kinds of reactions we see above in the comments. And Mike's boredom with the whole process. (However, he should abandon the Tom Hamilton line of questioning.) Frankly, I'm with those folks -- I wander over to The Fan during most interviews.

And I sometimes even wonder whether Mike would be fine if he didn't have to talk to Evan Grant and David Moore. His lack of interest in Mickey Spagnola and, after awhile, the next guy who's name is escaping me (heavyset chap, damn, can't remember) was apparent.

On the other hand -- Corby is very good at interviewing. Once in awhile he'll let loose a Sturmesque stemwinder that stops things down, but there must be something about the guy, some kind of natural personal charm that ropes in even difficult subjects like Bill Parcells. And he really did make Shaq The Ticket's Own there for awhile.

You know, I don't think The Musers are all that keen on interviewing, either. They've got their guys, like David Feherty, but they did not like having to talk to Peter Gammons every week. And seems to me there's a fairish amount of autopilot in some of their one-off interviews. Maybe being unfair here, but I think that Craig likes a nice, orderly show with something interesting in every segment, and athlete/coach interviews are not always consistent with that vision.

BaD gets some great interviews with the Guest Booking League, but for all his greatness, interviewing is not a marquee Bob skill. Donovan is a little star-struck. Dan is probably the best interviewer on a one-on-one basis, but the tag-team approach with Bob is distracting. But they do reach out and get some great interviews.

    ReplyDelete

  43. KT, the following does not pertain to you. . .

When a station is doing their best to ape another station, it only makes sense not to talk about them. Self examination and self awareness are a tough thing, pal.

Sorry, that's the way I (and I think many others) see it.

As to employees: As 8:55 said, Shan did post here not so long ago. I was thinking more along the lines of interns, sales trainees or newbies, and people like that. Maybe some board ops, too. Not hosts. Well, except RW. There's been way too much evidence over the years that point directly at him having posted up comments here. A lot of evidence.

Stay hard, KT. Always appreciate your feedback.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Rhynes seems genuinely interested in interfacing with David Moore. David's a pop culture, music guy. That's what Rhynes has become. I think he has a like-dislike relationship with Evan Grant. It seems that the relationship goes both ways. Evan often comes on with an air with an attitude that says: "I'm not going to be ignored/dismissed, so I'm going to beat Mike to the punch." And when Rhynes responds in kind, the entire segment remains cold and aloof. When Rhynes seems interested, Evan lightens up and we get a good segment. All the while, Corby tries to keep the ball rolling smoothly. It's during these segments and interviews that I appreciate Corby's talent. But it's about the only time I appreciate his talents. You can take the boy out of the fraternity, but you can't take the frat out of the boy. Lastly, there is definitely something to what Pman says about the relationship between a host/interviewer who thinks he's smarter than his guest/subject. Rhynes does seem to have this problem. And the times he doesn't, he comes off as star struck as Donovan. In short: Rhynes is a poor interlocutor.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Whether it was on purpose or not, I think you struck upon something very insightful about Mike, radish. Namely that Mike' interests and knowledge of subjects in general, and by current standards, are rather narrow. This is important, I believe, in the broader claim we keep going back to that states Mike has grown ever more disinterested. It is important because it (perhaps) explains why he seems to grow more disinterested with each passing year. I believe that in some sense he's becoming a casualty of something he helped to create, and thus his own success: Guy/Sports Talk and its evolution. I say in a sense, because to an even greater degree, the internet/information revolution is the real "culprit."

So what am I getting at? Succinctly put, he's getting passed by. More specifically, he's getting old, slowing down both mentally and physically, and the times and the world are moving on. When he first started this gig, it was a different world. He knew his local sports and had a pretty decent facility for the modern history of baseball, basketball, and football, as well as a general knowledge of what went on in each sport league-wise during their seasons. This was a pre-metrics world, mind you. Analysis was on the whole about gut-feelings and intuitions. Mike was at home. Guys like Berman were at home. The same can be said with pop culture: you knew what you knew and that's what you talked about. You didn't make it the focal point of the show, but you did cover that particular ground when the situation required it. When THL started out, every Tom, Dick, and Harry didn't have a "take" on everything under the sun. They didn't become sudden experts. They didn't speak with supreme confidence and authority on subject matter they in truth knew only in a superficial way. They knew what they knew; and that knowledge pertained to their genuine, or as Mike is wont to say, "organic,"interests. They weren't steered by whatever current and supposed (and most likely passing) truth held sway. (You see this, for example, in his stance toward the WAR stat.)

I think Mike has been looking around him for a long time now and saying to himself: "I don't get this." I believe he's tried to get it. But in the end he doesn't, isn't capable of it, and would come off as disingenuous if he forced himself to feign it--and that's not the sort of guy he is. Hence, he's just doing his thing. And his thing, when paired with Corby who is the first generation of the type of host I depict above, only makes his disposition all the more evident and glaring.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't have a problem with Mike being disinterested. I'd rather have him feign disinterest than being a fanboy of whatever team is in the discussion. I used to enjoy the uncomfortable Ranch reports when Mickey would get defensive about the Cows to the point of just about hanging up on whoever was doing the interview.
As for RW, I check the blog out a couple times a week, sometimes it's ok, sometimes I'm just indifferent about it. In regards to him posting here? I don't know, I mean the only person that would know is PMan if ip logging is on. Typically someone that's been in the market for as long as he has knows way more than any of us do, so I don't think he'd be stopping here for much intelligence.
In regards to the JV usage, I know it's been on here at MTC, but I could have sworn I've heard some mention of it on the Ticket a couple of times, not on a main show but in passing when they talk about someone taking someone else's place.

Intentional Grounding doesn't do anything for me, and I'm not being anti-semite about it either.

  47. Auto, IP addresses can only be used to make an identification of someone by law enforcement. If someone has the knowledge and means to do it, they're doing it illegally. So when you get some wiseacre who claims he knows who someone is because their IP addy is known to them, they're either breaking the law or lying. Probably the latter.
