Late Summer Pleasures

Ah, I love The Ticket this time of year.  My flower garden is tossing out its last hopeful blooms, and the Cowboys are wilting.

And The Ticket throws out some great Sunday broadcasting.

I heard a fair amount of That Shake Joint Thang this morning, and it was very sports heavy.  Very solid sports talk by Jake and Sean.  Both of those chaps, to my ear at least, do their homework -- including studying Bob's blog, which they graciously acknowledge -- and the result is a pre-pregame program that is very worthwhile.  It's fresh (despite the partial debt to Bob) and does not step overmuch on the Bob-and-Rich pregame.

Then there's Bob and Rich, joined for part of the show by another Ticket host.  I really enjoy the Bob/Rich interaction.  I know not everyone who visits this site shares my high opinion of Rich as a sometime host, but I really like his contributions and the way he and Bob deal with one another.

Today's guest was, as Bob and sometimes I refer to him, "Craig 'Junior' Miller."  Good stuff from Da Joonz, as usual.  There was a very interesting moment later in the show, after Craig reported on some historical research he'd done on the old Dallas Texans, and the nexus between football in Dallas and Kansas City.  I wish I had a transcript of what Bob said, but he praised Junior as a "sensitive" guy -- the kind of guy he, Bob, said he also believes himself to be -- who digs down and looks behind stuff.  My opinion, too, and I wish there were an opportunity for Craig to serve more often with the Stat Men on the station like Bob and David Newbury.  Craig doesn't ignore tendencies, but he reads between the lines of the recent performances on the field and comes up with some arresting insights.  Interesting contrast, and interesting that Bob made note of the flavor of Craig's contributions.

After the game, there's Norm and Donovan.  I continue to find myself puzzled sometimes by Norm's analyses -- I've written in the past that Norm will be slagging the Cowboys one moment, and in the next defending them against some caller on what seems to me like the same point.  If one were to break these instances down, I'm sure one would find that Norm is not being inconsistent.  Perhaps he's just instinctively challenging with callers.  In any event, I'm usually on board for the whole post-game.

Time to go rake some leaves, yellow, brown, and red.

  1. Couldn't agree with your assessment more, Plainsman. Did you also happen to catch the Diamond Talk that aired about 15 minutes or so after the Cowboys Post? Great stuff all around. I also agree with you about Norm. This isn't something of late, either. He's been inconsistent in some of his analyses for years now. I can always tell when he knows a caller has got the best of him: he'll keep the caller on air for an extended period of time until either he can somehow get the caller to agree with him (which in essence usually means the caller agreeing to his own point, but as re-worded by Norm) or talk his way around to agreeing with the caller, and then telling the caller that the caller is right about A, but that we don't live in a perfect world, "so there." How ever it goes down, and it does quite often, both on his daily show and the Cowboy Postgame Show, it's painful to listen to. Norm likes, nay, demands to be agreed with; and in the exact terms and phrasing of how he sees it. I hear some of the same thing go on in Diamond Talk. For instance, this afternoon both Newbury and Bass were saying how Wash isn't really to blame for what is and what has gone on this season. Only right thereafter go on to spell out in concrete terms all of the poor and puzzling decisions he makes on a regular basis; decisions which cost games. I think this phenomenon is something that comes with the job: you keep talking about a certain topic over and over, day in and day out, and you get to not only repeating yourself, but also you lose your sea-legs in a sense.

  2. Let me add: N and B said that Wash doesn't seem to know how to handle a bullpen very well, is too loyal to vets, and doesn't handle his bench options very well. Yet they also claim there are no grounds to fire him; that anyone who thinks so is overreacting. Sorry (or better yet, "I'm soooooory"), but that seems to me, and when you add into the fact that the team has played poorly in September now for 2 straight years, to make a very strong case for a new direction where a skipper is concerned. Again, both N and B, immediately prior to making all those claims, that Wash is in no way on the hot seat. Very Norm-like, IMO.

  3. Got the feeling TC is gonna het his ass handed to him soon. I don't think the Top Ten was meant to be used as his own personal time to rebut other hosts views; and do so at some length. He just did it to Sports Sturm. I smell a TC ball busting of the highest order coming down. From Bob and Dan both on and off air, and perhaps from Cat.

  4. What did he say? What was he refuting?

  5. He took Bob to task for not (in TC's brilliant mind) properly supporting his argument about the Rangers front office's most recent off season. He went on for over a minute pointing out the flaws in Bob's argument. Whether he was right or not, The Top Ten isn't The TC Show. Like I said, don't be surprised if a reprimand is handed out to him both on and off air.

  6. I enjoy TC's opinions and he is certainly more knowledgeable about baseball than Bob, which I am quite sure Bob would freely admit. And who says it's not the TC Show? He's the host...

  8. Shaggy, please support your opinions. Otherwise you're no better than Bob, according to TC today.

  9. It's called The Top Ten, not The TC Show. It might be up to him to decide what segments get in and the order of said segments, but there is nothing other than a Ticker-esque bit of wit and smart assness that is required. You don't show up hosts' opinions. The Top Ten is about, ta da!, the top ten segments; it's not about TC's opinions. Regardless of their validity. He hosts The Top Ten. It's not The Top Ten Featuring TC. There is a difference.

  10. Did anybody catch the 8:15am segment on the Musers today? George was talking about his son, who plays football at UNT, and had a season-ending injury last week. He got pretty emotional and I almost started to sports cry. It was good stuff as he "pulled back the curtain" a little bit.

  11. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/more-sports/headlines/20130918-shakeup-at-the-fan-radio-station-mark-elfenbein-jane-slater-shown-the-door.ece

"Mired in last place in Dallas-Fort Worth's three-station sports talk competition, KRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan is shifting Gavin Dawson, Chris Arnold and Mike Bacsik, known as G-Bag Nation, into the weekday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. time slot. Out are Mark Elfenbein and Jane Slater. The move goes into effect immediately.
Kevin Hageland and Cory Mageors, whose weekend offering was called K&C Masterpiece, slide into the weekday 6 to 11 p.m. time slot that belonged to Dawson, Arnold and Bacsik."

  12. Now we'll see if Gavin Dawson and Company can compete with the big boys

  13. Sighing Corby, the entertainment expert, showed his ignorance again today by dissing Jonathan Winters.

  14. Big news, DRW. Thanks for the info. I'll give it a shot, especially because Bacsik is involved.

By the way, Corby basically told Pman to "eat a sack." He said it for all those no spoilers people out there. Which means our Pman. I usually disagree with Corbles on just about everything, but he's right on this one.

  15. MoronDogL Didn't catch it this morning but I remember Hal Jay doing the same thing when his son played at TCU several years ago. There was a knee issue and maybe a concussion issue later on. A concerned parent is a concerned parent be he a radio personality or not.

Sports Cry covers a lot of ground when it comes to being a parent.

  16. I'll be tuning in occasionally to the GBag nation, as I've been a supporter of Gavin since he was running solo. Chris Arnold and Bascik will bring it too.

The Ticket has nothing to worry about though. No matter who they put in there, they can't break their ratings hold.

  17. Via twitter: Miss Kelly has been let go at 103.3

  18. Landry Locker let go at 103.3 as well. I assume this is all LMA fallout?

Landry would be a great JV addition at The Ticket IMHO. I expected him to go with B&S to the Fan.

  20. While I do not listen to The Fan (but told you all about CBS Radio issues months ago), I thought Confessors should know that Cumulus has acquired an internet radio start-up from a co-founder of Skype: rdio.com.

Cumulus has intentions to sell ads on a free version of rdio.com and has a goal to compete with Spotify.

As for the agreement with ClearChannel and iHeartRadio, that agreement should continue through all of 2014.

  21. Keep bringing it, DA. You've been laying out the blue print of what's coming down for quite some time now. And it's all been out there for us to see. Thanks for all the links you've provided over the last couple of years. Dang. Has it been that long? I guess so. I've watched you take some heat from people in these comments sections, but for those of us that have been patient, and remain so, I think we're starting to see the tip of the iceberg in regards to what you've been telling us.

    Again. Thanks, man.

By the way, Plainsman, my captcha was, and I'm not making this up, "analECUM"

  22. That was a tough one pal, hearing the Commander talk about his baby. He started crying towards the end, and I damn near did. Reminds of him sharing the boating incident. He's the heart of the station.
