No Foolin' -- Time to Freshen Up This Dog // BREAKING: RICH PHILLIPS UPDATE

(1) Best wishes to T.C. Fleming as he starts his serious broadcast career on afternoon drive on The Buzzer, WBSR in Pensacola.  (I think I"m the only one who calls it that, but maybe it will catch on as a sportsy nickname for the station and I'll watch those commissions roll in.)   I trust some Confessors will be streaming that show and will give us a report.  I predict it will be a pretty good little show.

(2) It would be very hilarious if there were mass DFW-area defections to WBSR during T.C.'s show, seriously wounding The Hardline.  I predict this will not happen.

(3) Gordon Keith:

MORE:   Dan McDowell impression.  He may have been doing this for awhile, but lately he seems to be trying it out more.  It's pretty Jay Leno-ish right now, but you can hear him tossing it out there in short bits every once in awhile to see what happens.  During the 5:30 am segment today, he was working on it, but everyone was talking at once so it was hard to pick it out.  Pretty funny, though.  I think it would be a tough one to do because Dan talks fast so the impressionist has to have something worked out in his head to keep the bit going.

LESS:  Drought Man.

BREAKING

Although my sources are being somewhat coy, it does appear (as suggested in a comment below) that there is at least one major change afoot at The Ticket, and it involves Rich Phillips.

No details, but other than his departure or a violent office coup deposing Jeff Catlin, I don't know what it could be.

Will be limited in my ability to follow this today, so please advise if you have information.  If my info is faulty, apologies to Rich, The Ticket, and y'all.

BREAKING BREAKING BREAKING

1:20 PM:  We waterboarded that uncertain source.  This remains unconfirmed.  However, best current information:

Rich Phillips will be taking a position with the Texas Motor Speedway in the nature of media relations or overall broadcast operations.  Sounds sweet.   Best of luck to Rich.

  1. Gordon's Mark Levin imitation is superb. It might be his best since Fake Jerry--except his Levin sounds damn near indistinguishable from the genuine article, whereas his Jerry is more of a caricature. I say this as a registered Republican, just in case anyone thinks my kudos to Gordo are politically motivated. They're not. It's an excellent and hilarious sendup.

    ReplyDelete
  2. He rolled out Fake Dan in the O Deck too. I approve.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I try to defend the guy, but Sean Bass is already popping on Jer and popping off (while cocky sniffing) about everyone overreacting to the Rangers loss. Telling us to tap the brakes and be real fans. I've never in my life seen someone become a grizzled 25 + years veteran and sage of an industry faster than Sean Bass. More than a bit annoying I must admit.

  6. Oh boy. More butt holding. So, So Anonymous, what's up with Dick Hick's? I take it your comment, posted a scant 3 minutes after Gypo Nolan's, is directly related to GN's?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Pman, put out your feelers. We might have some actual Ticket changes coming down. No offense, and I mean no offense as I pre-say this, but TC's departure, while somewhat of a loss, is nothing in comparison to a near D1er like Dick Hicks' departure. If in fact that's what's going down.

  8. Anon 10:30

I like Sean, but thought the same thing this morning. Pretty much called Norm out, and Norm just backed down a bit. Are people somewhat overacting: yes. But it was the first game of the season and the concerns many shared before the season showed themselves in that first game. So, you should talk about it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I have indeed had a very non-definitive suggestion from a person who might have heard something from a friend's cousin who knows someone's sister down the hall from The Ticket that something is, in fact, up with Rich Phillips.

    ReplyDelete
  10. He posted on Twitter that he wasn't doing the SMU games in New York because of a family health issue. Could that be it?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Looks like a real nice position with Texas Motor Speedway. I stress -- unconfirmed.

    ReplyDelete
  12. But as I said in Twitter -- I do not want to speculate about any family health issues that may also be taking place. No idea re that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Any chance this is just an April Fools prank?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, absolutely could be an April Fool on me and us all (but mostly me).

I'm thinking though, that after the Rosengarden fiasco, which the Musers reprised this morning, and the fact that Rich is a pretty well-respected local guy and senior at The Ticket, probably not.

Cannot be discounted, however, and if so, then I'll chortle at myself and take my lumps.

    Before I open a vein.

    ==========

Also: It would have to a gag in which a number of people are involved, including my squishy sources and someone calling himself Gypo Nolan.

So I'm thinking: Not a gag.

But I'm wavering. I'll come back to the site in a few hours to see if I've been had.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Perhaps I should add: This is not an April Fool by me, directed at you, O faithful Confessors.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Danny just mentioned something about the Rich Phillips announcement as Snake was talking about being April fooled twice today.

Perhaps the Dick Hicks TMS gig is just that-a prank

    ReplyDelete
  17. april fools is such a beating

  19. This must be a very tough Ticket listening time for you and your loved ones, Jeets. My condolences in these harsh times.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Were falling apart bro

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hold on your buts again. Something HUGE is going down. I mean BIGGER than Bod and Dan leaving or Norm retiring.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Trolls now. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't believe anything written or told to me on 4/1, unless it comes from a reputable news source like MTC.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "The day's toughest story" coming up next. Find a radio, P-Man.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The "day's toughest story" is Tiger's back surgery.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Because you people clearly cannot have nice things, I'm never posting here again. I haven't posted since a few weeks ago when I gave you the heads up on the TC move, then got "yelled at" for it not being worthy of a "hold onto your butts"(despite the fact that you all have been constantly posting about it since the announcement). Good luck with the endless speculation and au revoir.

    PS:
1)Becca is told to put the pause in there. Not sure exactly why. The other fill ins will do the same.

    2) Rich is leaving. Last day April 11. New tickerman and APD obv pending. No other significant moves coming anytime soon.

    Gun cocks and fires.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ Gypo Nolan

Are you saying Rich leaving is bigger than Bob and a Dan leaving or is there something else that will come out. If not then I disagree that him leaving is bigger news that the Northern Boys changing stations.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, Gypo, I second T4's sentiment. If RP leaving is bigger than Bob and Dan potentially leaving for The FAN, then you have your hierarchy out of whack. Then again, maybe that "Gypo" was an imposter? Who knows. If that's it for you, Gypo, stay hard. But I still don't understand the commenters who like to announce that they're done.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hold on to your boobs, girls.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gypoi Nolan = Mike "Machine" Marshall. Take it to the bank. Guess it doesn't matter anymore. He's taking his ball and going home. Alrighty then.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I never noticed Becca's stutter step until it was mentioned here. Now that I hear it, it doesn't bother me. I'll tell you what bothers me, is the Roger EMMMMMMrick tagline going on down the dial.

My theory on Becca: she takes the extra beat to be sure "stick it up your tailpipe" comes out clean. If you get my drift.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Becca doesn't bother me at all. Things I've said in the past about her sound is because she has a little bit of Kardashian drawl to her but she does a very nice job on her traffic reports though.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm guessing Logan was also instructed not to whisper "the Ticket" at the end of his tickers. I kind of liked his schtick.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Danny and Corby certainly implied that the Rich Phillips story was fake.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Aw, c'mon, Gypo, don't pout. I thought the TC thing was butt-worthy.

If you post on the Internets expecting nothing but praise -- especially for content-free butt-holding notices -- then you will live a lonely life indeed. So if there's something I need to be looking into, do let us know. You don't need to say anything more than "HOTYB" -- you don't want to tip your identity, although the Pan-American Catman has probably already figured it out.

But if you do feel the need to stop posting -- well, thanks for your past contributions. You've given us some fun hereabouts.

And yeah, I think the 506 Gypo may have been an imposter. Which is why there is no point in asking people not to be anonymous.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's easier to spot a false identity than an anonymous troll.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hold on to your taints.

Man, that's a funny visual (albeit an offensive one).

Becca's "pause" got mention on Gordo's Corner this morning (Junez said that he's gotten a mountain of email on it.) Smells like success to me!

    ReplyDelete
  38. The Dick Hicks Twitter appears to confirm that the TMS gig is not a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Anyone hear TC yesterday? How was it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I listened...

TC was good, but it was a bit of culture shock to listen to their format. It is what the Ticket started out being--completely caller driven. There was also almost no structure to each segment--bouncing around from topic to topic based on the callers' whims. I'm guessing that may change with TC's influence.

Speaking of culture shock, I think TC's partner probably thinks TC is an incredibly odd bird. One of the return cuts TC chose was a Flaming Lips song, and the host was dumbfounded by the music and had never heard of them when TC told him who/what it was. Pretty funny. It is certainly going to come across as a very odd couple pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I listened to the first segment of TC's show yesterday, and yeah definitely a culture shock. The co-host was pretty Pete-stein-opening-day level of generic sports fluff. It seemed like TC was definitely picking his spots to talk and choosing his words carefully. The show couldn't be more different than IJB, so we'll see how he adjusts, but hopefully he'll be able to steer his co-host away from the generic stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Now Becca is using a decidedly shorter pause.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Did Corby have his pants down when he talked to Switzer yesterday?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I always love hearing Switzer on with the hardline. He's the loveable grandpa I never had.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Kinda surprised nobody has mentioned the Ticketshtick on Justified. I was unaware of this recurrent bit. When BaD had the writer/P1 on the show it was enlightening. I wonder if word ever got back to the New Yorker writer where that line came from in the scene.

After hearing the legendary Johnny E-brake of "the anus" I think I counted five different drops that evolved out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1) Skulling Bolzzz
    2) Your a flawed guy
    3) The Anus is on you
    4) The Anus?
    5) The heinous??

    ReplyDelete
  47. If Rich is leaving then good for him. I'm sure it's a dream of his as he obviously has a passion for Nascar. This will let him live it every day.

    ReplyDelete
  48. DICK HICKS NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

But yeah, that sounds great. Good luck to Rich.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jer:

    "Hold onto yer butts".

    ReplyDelete
  50. Uh, did anyone else besides me just here that???? Someone on Norm's crew just said, coyly, and right before they went to break "hold onto your butts." Right after Norm asked if it was OK to talk about RP's leaving.

So Gypo is either, Sirois, Jer, Sean, Fahey, or whoever else is working for Norm today.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Did Jer just say hold on to your butts? He can't be Gypo. Can he? Since Jer is a sometimes commenter and obvious reader of MTC, maybe he's throwing that phrase out there as a nod? Surely he's not Gypo.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I sympathize with Gypo. I've come on here trying to give real info before and been called Richie Whitt or "Gavin". This aint a fun place to be to try to place facts, PMan.

I wish some of you could see the real inside workings of a radio station. Some of your assumptions slay me on a regular basis.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anon 10:08
That's three of us who heard it.
Did they ever get around to talking about it? I had to step away from the radio for a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  54. To me it's not because someone is giving breaking news but it's distinctly because they make everyone sit for a while. If you have news...spill it. Don't try and garner attention as a build-up.

    ReplyDelete
  55. "Hold on to your butts" is a quote from Jurassic Park, so it doesn't necessarily mean a MTC tie-in. It especially double doesn't mean Gypo Nolan is Sirois, or anyone else on the Ticket.

    ReplyDelete
  56. beauty school dropoutApril 3, 2014 at 1:31 PM

True, birq, but you have to admit that it's one helluva coincidence.

    @1157
Then why on God's green earth do you visit MTC? If we "slay" you with our ignorance and wild, erroneous speculations (and of course, you, "insider," have all the real answers), then why are you wasting your time commenting--and doing so multiple times, as your latest comments implies?

I don't know if whether Jer is Gypo or not? While I don't think it was a coincidence that he threw out the "hold onto your butts" this morning directly after Norm brought up Rich's leaving, I don't think he is. At least I hope not. Gypo, 1157, and others of both real and supposed insider ilk are irksome. Irksome in that if you do have info, why don't you just spill the beans? You don't because either you like the attention and the "power" it gives you, or because you're afraid your fellow employees/employer will figure out your identity if you make public private info that only you and a handful of others are in the know about. If you are in fact a real insider, then you are a bad employee who ought not to be trusted. Sure, we all might enjoy, hell, some seem to fricking live for, inside info and gossip, but please desist from your high and mighty "I'm the adult among children" stances. It doesn't wash. You are in no way on some sort of mature or moral high ground. Quite the opposite, in fact. THE fact of the matter is that all changes at The Ticket are made known to us P1s. Moreover, there's yet to be one piece of insider info posted here that wasn't released by the station, at most, a few days later. The upshot is, get over yourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Slow. Clap. Beautifully put, beauty school. I wish I'd have said it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Much like other station promos, the Jub Jam promo is being run into the ground. As soon as I hear it starting I immediately lunge for the power button on my radio.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Maybe they'll bring back Gen-X Davy for the Ticket Tinkle Tickers.

I'd like that with his Walter Winchell deliveries.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have it on good authority that the Big Strong One, who checks in as a commenter from time to time, was offering a tip of the hat to the Confessor -- and perhaps a slight noodge.

The fact is that Gypo pretty much had the goods, and before too long this site was sharing some pretty good information that did not come from Gypo.

So while it is true that when we hear tremors in the Ticket substrate we may shoot off in different directions wondering what's up, we've had a couple of significant scoops over the past few years.

In any event, the point is to have some fun.

    ReplyDelete
  61. beauty school dropoutApril 3, 2014 at 5:37 PM

Exactly right, Pman: the point is, is to have some fun. So while Gypo and some others might offer up some scoops a day or two or three before they're made public, it doesn't give them the right to scold others for somehow not appreciating their offerings and/or not waiting with bated breath for another cryptic proclamation. Most of these scoops, by the way, aren't scoops per se. They are little tips that something is or might be going down. It's at that point where we Confessors begin are oft times wrongheaded but sometimes on the money speculating.

(Aside: It was So Anonymous who actually broke the story, by the way, not Gypo. SO gave up the goods while G issued his/her usual "butt holding" warning.)

To reiterate from my earlier comment, everyone loves getting a scoop. Or even a hint that something is going down. It sets off everyone's alarm bell and gets us all to speculating. It is, as Pman says, part of the fun. But if we're going to get chastised and at times lectured by informers and tipsters (not every tipster does this, e.g., So Anonymous), I think it's only fair to point out their own faults in this regard.

    ReplyDelete
  62. We're having fun here, no?

    ReplyDelete
  63. New IJB just posted early this morning - the first with TC in Florida. He starts off the podcast with "I don't like Cat" and "I wish I would have had a different boss"
He left Jake in an uncomfortable situation LOL

  66. Out of curiosity I just checked out Becca's Ticket.com biography. Check this out:

Rebecca Parker was born in Nogales, Arizona but moved to Arlington, Texas at the Age of 7. She graduated from University of North Texas with a Broadcast Journalism Degree in 2010 and has been working for the Cumulus Cluster ever since. She started off as an intern for 99.5 The Wolf and worked her way to Special Events Coordinator for New Country 96.3 KSCS and 99.5 The Wolf. Now, she is a Full Time Traffic Reporter on both Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket and Top 40 station i93 Today's Hit Music. Her interests include cooking, playing golf and tennis, and spending time with her husband and dog, Roscoe.

Doesn't it make it sound like she is married to her dog?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Diamond cut jeans wearerApril 4, 2014 at 7:38 AM

I wonder whatever happened to Nicky Granville. Wasn't there a story behind that?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Considering the story she told about how she met her husband when she was on the Musers one morning- that when her husband was underage and she was a waitress, she overserved him when he was with his dad, and yet even when he was tipsy/drunk he still got her number and she thought it was cute...then later in the segment she was audibly annoyed with him that he was out late the night before without her and chastised him on the air to "take out the dog and clean the house".....yeah, considering all that, I'm sure Becca would rather think of her husband in a "Oh, yeah, him" kinda method

    ReplyDelete
  69. Now wait a damn second. She has been in Texas since she was 7? and right here in DFW? And she didn't know that county of the Alamo and San Antonio? I could not care less about her cadence or the pause. I only notice mispronounced Texas words because my ears are always set to hear them, whether a talking head on the TV or a voice emanating from the speakers.

@BSD. Hear hear. I'll second that.

@Gypo and the Anons of information.
Stay or go, up to you. When Bob and Dan went down the answer finally came from over at ShaggyBevo. We sat around here and speculated for quite a while. Did you offer any help at all other than the tease? If you want to let us twist in the wind, fine, but don't expect us to sit here idly. Random, ill-advised and wild speculations will ensue. It's what we do. It's what you do. Everyday. On the radio. And we sit and listen to it, rail against you or agree. Humans kinda do that. A lot. Stay or go, suit yourself. I expect we will still be here.

So is Dick Hicks staying or going? Norm teased some info about it and then sent someone to ask Rich. Nothing happened and nothing was said. That tends to make me think this is actually going down. If he does indeed have a new gig at the Speedway, well kick ass for him. I wonder if he will be able to keep the gig at SMU. He has certainly fought through enough bad sports to have earned some good moments. That and some truly classic homer calls. Will the Dick Hicks NASCAR CD be live now? Will Jr. learn who Rich Phillips is? And who becomes the mgmt in his replacement?

TC does not like Cat? No way! Never would have imagined that!
Predicting the IJB will fade away. Perhaps it will persist in some form for a while, but I am not confident that a long term, long distance radio relationship will last.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Rich is going to be on with BaD radio this afternoon was teased in a 40 liner earlier and junes referred to him as the voice of the speedway so I'm assuming that he does have a new job there and is leaving the ticket and we will get the details this afternoon.

But who knows and we'll see.

    bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Doesn't really seem like something which would require a full time position. I could see him doing both (similar to how George easily did both at the old stadium) but I guess it depends on what exactly the role is. Hard to imagine there's too many fulltime jobs over there with only a handful of big events per year.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @1010
His position is indeed a full-time job. The handful of events that take place at TMS each year require more work and are prepped for much longer than you can probably imagine. NEXT year's NASCAR race alone is already being prepped for….and realize that this year's is taking place this weekend. For example, you know what SXSW is, right? The annual weeklong music festival in Austin. They have a full-time, yearly employed staff. The logistics, etc., of events like this require A LOT of prep work. Rich will have more than enough to keep him occupied and in a full-time position.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Who will become the new Assistant PD? Sean? Ty? Jake? Big Unit?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Craig Miller has been the interim program director for a while now.

    ReplyDelete
  77. There are also a ton of events at TMS other than just the big races. I rarely drive by TMS and the lights are off and the parking lot is empty. I'd bet there is some kind of event going on out there 40 weeks out of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ebrake times a thousand on the top ten right now. Greatness.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Man...that has to be harder than it seems because it throws all of them for a loop. I was wondering why Rotten Radio was on.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Dick Hicks confirmed the story about his departure on Race Week.

He will be the voice of TMS. This will include broadcasting races over the in stadium network for the big TV. He will also assist in any and all broadcast media stuff out there.

He also will be hosting the TMS type Race Week that is currently broadcast on 60 stations-whether this will include the Ticket, he did not elaborate.

He did offer that he will be keeping his SMU football and basketball gigs. Thus, there will opportunities for "Homer Call of the Week".

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well, another ACM (Academy of Country Music) award show has come and gone. Overall I thought it was a good show. A few hokie moments but that is expected with a country show.

I guess this will give Corby and Danny an opportunity to make fun of people and music for a few segments this week.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Why do I get the feeling less fuss will be made over Dick Hicks' leaving than was made over T.C.?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Because Dick Hicks never publicly stated that he found MTC to be decidedly not to his liking. Whereas TC did. Because TC is childish, whereas Dick Hicks has children and lives in the real world; not the podcast angst-releasing, playing songs that obliquely/passive-aggressively take shots at a former employer, world of men-boys like TC.

But it's my first point that addresses your rhetorical, 1027. And you're bang, dead, right, by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Today with Becca it seems there is hardly any pause between Ticket and stick it up your tail pipe traffic...

Also on the Musers this morning they mentioned an email from Gordo mentioning her pause. Not sure if that was ever brought up on this site before and I just missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm betting Gordon actually read it here and not in an email. He sounded like he was going to say he read it in a blog, but then thought better of it and changed it to saying he read it in an email.
