Tell the Truth

If you are able to get 96.7 FM, do you still listen to 1310 AM?  Some Confessors said they didn't switch over when The Ticket got its long-pants signal, but is this still the case?

A few quick hits:

A commenter at the end of the last thread beat me to it:  I thought the Norm expense report review on The Hardline yesterday was pretty bad.  Remember when Bob and Dan got yanked off the air when Dan undertook to read an internal memo regarding, as I recall, producers?  This is plainly company-confidential information, and, in my judgment, about as sorry as Dan's disclosure.  I'd be surprised if someone didn't get spoken to.  Also agree with that commenter that the expense report was not all that exceptional.  Kind of made The Hard Ones look like they weren't too hip.

I like it when people say "coach 'em up."

Wish the Dirk "Guess What Day It Is" commercial parodying the GEICO ad with the camel had run more often.  Thought it was absolute genius.  Not only was Dirk extremely funny, not only did he actually walk like that camel, the thing featured a star turn by the too-little-seen-on-major-visual-media-outlets Cash Sirois.

As a Man of the Plains, I have a pretty thick skin after coming on five years of composing this site.  For those who have not heard me say it in the past:  I compose very quickly and do not spend a lot of time on this site.  I listen to The Ticket when I can, which is maybe 2-4 hours a day, almost all of it in drive time.  I do not have time to do much else.  I almost never re-listen or to go back and find things I missed.  And I have listened to precisely one podcast, ever.  This means I will be less knowledgeable than some others who have lots more time to do these things.  I am very grateful that those people visit the site and I appreciate it when my errors are pointed out.

But really, put a cork in the personal aspersions, OK?  I tend not to delete them because I don't want to seem like a guy who can't take criticism, and because I do get stuff wrong.  But I'm considering greatly increasing the deletions for tone around here.

Thank you, and also for Shopping at My Ticket Confession.

To your last statement: Amen. Please do. It would be appreciated by many.

I think the Norm segment shows two things: 1. The negative part of Corby's personality isn't a bit, it's who he is. That stuff comes straight from the mind of an ex-frat daddy. 2. THL is lazy and plain out of ideas. If they're not talking music, Hollywood gossip, or reading the DMN and Observer websites for local headlines, they have nothing. This 'fell into' Corby's lap so they ran with it. Hey, it's a segment, right! A stale show. A very stale and worn out show that could sorely use a reboot. Not new hosts or even an additional host, but it definitely needs retooling. As is, it's merely going through the motions and getting paid handsomely while doing so.

I listen to both frequencies. Where I live (E. Dallas) the fm side barely comes in so I go am. Where I work (N. Dallas/Plano), both come in fine but I choose the fm side.

  2. I have only listened to the AM signal when I absolutely had to, as long as there have been other options. I was a D1P1 of the 104.1 signal and I don't think I've listened to more than 30 seconds of AM since 96.7 came around. I also watch color TV and drive a "motorized" carriage, so I'm pretty out there when it comes to being an early adopter.

I strongly agree with you on the "Guess What Day It Is" commercial. It was one of the few that stood up to repeated viewing (see anything with Kaimie and Liddy or Billy Mavs).

  3. I was worried I was going to have to search through yesterday's entire Hardline to find the Norm expense report segment but luckily The Unticket posted it to their frontpage. So if you're looking for it just go there and the work is already done for you.

Just listening to the segment but I immediately got slapped in the face by that awful "How Will You Feed" Danny song. Something about hearing music snob Danny sing that song just drives me crazy. How can someone singing that song in that way ever criticize another musician?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hardline segment theme songs used to be a huge pet peeve of mine. Not every recurring segment needs a theme song, especially when it's one of Corby's pot-fueled acoustic strummers. Danny has been doing most of them over the past few years, and in most cases it sounds like he finds an existing music bed and records some crap over the top of it (e.g., every version of What's On Mike's Mind). They're not funny or entertaining. The only exception is the fake Stones CQH theme, but it wasn't even done by a Hardliner, it was done by George on his own. Now it's not so much a pet peeve as a punch-out or delayed punch-back when I know the How Will You Feed theme is coming up next.

  5. Good, birq, I'm glad it's not just me. It's been bugging me for a while and it's definitely a punch out. What makes it even worse is "How Will You Feed" is about the worst concept for a segment I've ever heard (seriously, who thought it was a good idea?). I'm sure most people listening have zero clue as to what the concept is even supposed to be.

The original CQH song is greatness. And I'm not kidding.

  7. I tried to listen to 104.1, but even out here north of LBJ it was hard to pick up. I switched immediately to 967 (no point). I still have pre-set for 1310, but I just keep it on FM.

  11. 967 most of the time, but will switch to 1310 when I'm in parts of Fannin County. 967 has some dead spots east of the Grayson county line.

  12. Last week, I was driving into DFW to visit family. I drove the night through and crossed Texarkana around 2am or so. I don't have satellite radio, so I constantly hot the scan button until there is a song that makes me want to stop. After a while, I am scanning and it stops on a commercial. I immediately hit scan out of habit, but something catches my ear and I hit the back scan. It stops on 967 and it is Norm doing a commercial around 3-4am (time is fuzzy after driving straight through the night). I was amazed at the clarity of the channel and once the Little Ticket came on with the local show grams, I kept it there and never went to 1310.

On a side note, I am amazed every time I come back how many more Tejano stations there seem to be.

Has there been any on-air reaction to the Norm expense report segment? I'm curious if Norm himself had anything to say about it.

  14. 96.7 in the car and in my bathroom in the morning, 1310 in my home office.

Amen, Birq. I too thought this place was for people to talk about what we do and do not like about the Little One.

Plainsman, I haven't done the research - does the Blogger platform support nested comments (threads)? Would that be difficult for you to implement/is there a reason that you don't?

  15. Coming from east of Greenville (TX) every morning it is 96.7. However, it is scratchy and has the Houston mexican station breaking through on occasion. The signal doesn't clear up until Caddo Mills.

Interesting though, There is a spot on Highway 205 south where 96.7 gets scratchy and 1310 actually comes in better.

One of these days I am going to download the SportsDay app.

Seriously the Mavs and FSSW get praised for their production value and content liek it's prime time worthy, but none of it is...it's all soooo bad. Remember when Corby said that the FSSW Story of Dirk was as good as a 30 for 30. Yeah....Effing...Right...not even close.

  18. The meaning about how will you feed segment has nothing to do with what and where the phrase came from. its basically just change from the pool party..a segment to talk about whatever doesn't fit in other segments of the show.

So who cares its just a title doesn't have to do with anything the are talking about. jesus some of you guys need to get over yourselves.

I thought the Norm expense report bit was pretty good. Not great. The sports day talk app (that's affiliated w/ the station) has it featured in the "clips" section. I don't feel bad for a millionaire, when another millionaire busts his balls over how he spends his money. Besides, there's plenty of precedent for using his diet, cheapness, and crusty relationship with management as fodder for segments.

I've been loving Junior's Plains, Trains, and Automobiles references, and I really love it when he talks Lost. That cabin was totally burning!

What are they trying to prove with the constant flight simulator demonstration. Question: Would CNN simulate a a search and rescue mission if the simulator pilot accidently crashed the plane? Sorry, too soon...

    @810
And exactly what does that have to do with The Ticket?

I'm mostly a 1310 guy. THL and The Musers sound much better on the AM side of the dial. BaD, better on the FM side. The weekend shows, too, sound better on FM. Since I'm mostly a drive time listener, I have my radio set to 1310.

Speaking of weekend shows. Does anyone else out there have the same reaction to The Tee Box as I? That is, a simultaneous attraction and repulsion to it. I'm at once held captive by and disgusted with Rick's and Craig's catty, at times petty, mostly envy-rooted, gossipy natures. The entire show consists of name dropping, insinuations about players (named and unnamed), claims about players by unnamed sources, and a general small time, in the know but only to a certain extent, sort of gal pal gab fest that my wife and her friends have while discussing celebrities. It's weird. It makes me feel dirty. Yet I continue to tune in. Anyone else out there in my boat?

  31. @BSD
Yeah, I kind of like the insidery commentary from the TeaBag boys. I remember a Saturday back in the winter or late fall when they had two pros on the show and were talking to them about the game itself and their desire to play. I believe it was Stankowski that said he played because that was his job or at least it was at the time. The idea of playing for fun didn't enter into the equation. I do like hearing them talk about the times when the Powers that Be in golf get things wrong or at least in their opinion. I am not likely to hear some gossip about somebody on a tournament presentation. It is unlikely that I will tune in to the Golf channel unless there is something happening that it is on there and not the main networks. I am probably a golf P3. I do like hearing from Craig and Rick on Saturdays. Some days we get treated to an epic e-brake. Craig one time told on himself when as a youth he took the PSAT? I think it was the pre and he barely made it to basic literacy levels. He is a math whiz but the wiring for words is somewhat iffy. He told one on his son recently. He misread a word, a basic word, on a parking lot sign. It was a smh moment.

It varies for me which one I can pick up. Most of the time out in the field I am running Iheart. I cannot get Tunein to work right. I have tried that link which comes up with "this station is not available" every time. I tried the links on the Unticket to no avail. Nothing. I dislike Sportsday. I really do not need more reminders that D.Ware has left the Cowboys. I could probably handle that but it had a bad habit of shutting itself off if I went to check an email, answer a call or variety of other tasks. Iheart did not and does not have that problem for me. I do listen to Tunein on the computer. Tiny little player vs that ad filled whole page that refuses to get small? Give me the little unobtrusive one, thanks. On the old school terrestrial radio, in town it is 967 all the way. Out on the highway it just varies. Sometimes I can pick up the AM signal better than I can the FM.

Do y'all remember the discussion George brought one morning about the sportswriter that tried to outrun the radio of the broadcast of the WS out of StL? Game ended and he was still listening to the postgame show traveling away, still going strong. THAT is why I do not let go of terrestrial radio. Until they allow sports to be played on the same station without having to purchase the right to listen to it then I am going to be scratching around the dial looking for my teams. I will go print off a list of carriers for the Longhorns and Rangers every year. I can always find the Cowboys. They are everywhere.
When I had to go work on the same weekend that the US played the Russians in hockey I had to break out the tiny pocket radio. It was unavailable online, but there was Doc Emrik on my little portal to the permanent waves of the wonders of radio. There's something cool about riding west on a Friday night in the fall and hearing a baseball game from St Louis.

  34. Has anyone caught any of TC's WBSR work? I swung by there a few minutes ago and there's still no sign of him on the station's website. The morning show page still shows the two bros that have been there since the big announcement that he was taking his talents to Pensacola.

    @bsd
I'm kinda with you, pal, on The Tee Box. I follow golf, so I naturally gravitate towards the show. Biut there is a sorta gossipy element to it that bothers me sometimes. Specially when the party under discussion is never there to defend itself. Even more so because it's obvious that The Tee Box guys would give anything to have been a pro golfer. I mean, yeah, pretty standard human stuff. I can't be you so I'm going to find flaws with you to make me not being you a softer blow sort of thing. Overall I do like the show and try to tune in most Saturdays.

I'm a 967 listener. It comes in great where I live and work.

Good luck to TC. I think he might end up wishing he hadn't taken the job, but I bet in the end he does well. At least well in the sense that the move might springboard him on to other jobs in the field. From the description of the show he's going to take part in and his job duties, I'm not sure if he's going to fit in. Like I said, good luck to him. I hope it turns out well.

The Sirois Dirkumentary and Geico parody are greatness. I'm so much come around on those guys over the past two years. The way Mike has grown into his producer role impresses me. He's found the sweet spot between supporting Norm and challenging him without being disrespectful.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If Mike had his own show (not even necessarily with Cash though) I would be a huge P1. He's someone who is very genuine to the P1 at remotes and I think he brings a lot to the table. No offense to Norman but he kind of brings Sirois down and I believe he could lead his own show with the right talent around him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. WASTE: I think those P1 Wasteland boys have (had?) something. Haven't given up on them. It takes time to come up with stuff to write and then writing it in a way that is interesting. Sometimes Your Plainsman succeeds, sometimes I flop. Sometimes I just steal from your comments. I thought P1 Wasteland had more energy and initiative than I do, and I was kind of looking forward to a friendly rivalry that would be entertaining to the P1. So I'm hoping we haven't heard the last of them.

FOOL: I hope for T.C.'s sake that it isn't an April Fool's gag. Craig Rosengarden tried this a year or two back -- announcing he was leaving the Teebox, April Fool! -- and got absolutely and universally slagged for it. If it is a gag, then he's dragged the whole station in on the lie, and T.C. just doesn't seem like the type to commit career suicide in quite that way.

I'm trying to remember if some enterprising Confessor called WBSR to confirm T.C.'s impending employment.

Also -- if it is an April Fool's gag, then he's erred in telegraphing it with his latest dispatches.

So my vote is -- not a gag.

THE NEW BAVARIANS: Nice inaugural post, Bayern Munich. Welcome to My Ticket Confession.

  42. Thanks for the welcome, Plainsman. I've been lurking for nearly a year and thought "what the hell" and made the plunge. I'm a Bayern Munich fan (Bundesliga soccer), so that's where the handle comes from.

  52. Concerning Becca, the pause really doesn't register with me. When her traffico presentation stands out is a mispronunciation of a Texas word.
Bexar street in particular. Fortunately for her there aren't too many accidents in the outlying outpost of Mexia. Though Waxahachie did make the mix one time.

If Corbles thought Perry was going to miss the highest profile aggy to have a senior day since ever, well then the College Football Blowhard needs to read up a bit, even a magazine would suffice. For Johnny Football's sake I hope nobody in Texas drafts him, us or the cousins down I-45, methinks he would do better with a lesser spot light on him.

  55. Let's try this again:

So, Davey and Danny are talking about an unfortunate mishap with an asshat city worker weaving through traffic and dropping paint all over Davey's car. The obvious answer here is to call the city and his insurance company, but they're gonna take calls on this. One of the callers actually says "call the city." They keep taking calls soliciting opinions on removing the paint.

This, ladies and gents, is called "burning a segment".

Oh, now we have Danny, after they're done taking calls, saying: "You know what we accomplished here? NOTHING." Nice!

  56. I am a proud member of the Corby Davidson Hater's Club and I normally take great pleasure in calling him out on his failures, shortcomings and overall intellectual laziness. However, I don't mind giving him credit when I think he deserves it. I am happy to applaud his efforts to get involved in the fundraiser for the kid named Malik from Merriman Elementary. He's got a form of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and needed/needs some help with medical bills. From the articles I can find, Corby was the point man for setting up a Ticket on-site broadcast from the fundraiser and I hope it helped the kid out in some significant way.

I must have missed that segment today (it was an entire segment??)

I will say that I (not unlike many of the participants of this blog, no doubt) was listening live when Davey's infamous ticker went down all those years ago, and have heard it replayed/recapped many times over the years. I never knew the reason for Dave's giggle fit until they talked about it this morning, however! Thank you, Orphanage, for pulling the curtain back on this (if it hasn't been pulled back before and I just missed it.)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I hope everyone here has heard Davey's infamous Jeep running out of gas after having spent an evening at a now defunct Dallas strip bar???? Oh my. Our sweet Davey used to be, very long ago, how should we say, an admitted connoisseur of such establishments. And let's just say something 'happened' while at one such den of iniquity, culminating with a ride of shame, running out of gas, and the pushing of said jeep along Greenville ave. Ah, The Ticket Glutton. How do I love thee, let me count the ways. So many years of awkward, totally relatable, greatness.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Someone give me a really, really good explanation of why Becca's pause between "Ticket" and "Stick It Up Your Tailpipe Traffic" is so bothersome. To me, it is a complete nothingburger, not even a slight annoyance.

It is somewhat noticeable. My first thought when I heard it, though, was that this is what the CTO has told her to do -- isolating and highlighting the "Ticket" brand, as the station has been doing more of the past few years.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I never joined in with my opinion on the earlier threads concerning the "Becca pause". My first thought then, and now, was the 1983 movie "Eddie and the Cruisers".

There was a scene in the movie where Eddie Wilson learns the meaning of the term "caesura". (Google it if you want to know the technical meaning. It is used in music and poetry.)

However, the blogger on the link below explains it a lot better than I can, in the context of the movie; and therefore, IMO, in the context of the "Becca pause".

  62. So this is what it's come down to, huh. Analyzing traffic chicks. And this isn't the first thread to go down this route, either.

Maybe it is time to figure out just "where is Greggo?". I mean, shit, if this is where this thing is heading. We'd be better served going full on, speculation of the highest order Coast to Coast (both Art Bell's and Joonz's versions), than what's now come to pass for subject matter.

  67. Since I'm 1:20 I can tell you that 7:53 and 1:20 are NOT the same person.

So now YOU have lost all credibility, as you are so fond of saying of others.

    How does it feel, bub?

  68. Maybe I did not state it clearly. In fact I did not state it at all and assumed my references would speak my opinion.

My earlier post was meant to give kudos and a shout-out to Becca. I don't have a problem with her delivery and also think there are a lot better subjects to address.

@ YEAH JEETS - Not sure where to find the link you are looking for. However, when this was going on I called Corby out for the bully he was/is. This was addressed once by TC; he said he was glad someone was checking his six (my words, not his).

Maybe being a BaD intern, the Pman will let you write some quick hits.

  69. I really enjoy the Jake / Sirois pairing. I don't think either is a spectacular sports commentator, but they are both highly entertaining radio personalities in my opinion.
Attention Catman....pair these two together and groom them to fill in for the 1st regular weekday show that leaves (Norm).
To me, this is far and away the best ever JV show pairing we've ever had.

  73. All,
One of the many reasons I stop by this site, is that The Plainsman has created an atmosphere of civility, decorum, and professionalism not found in most places on the interweb.
I don't know how you did it in the first place Plainsman, but lately it seems, every once in a while we lose touch with the better qualities in our posts. I vow to keep it civil and productive in the future and welcome all who will do the same.

    Amen. Right there with you.

    @various sniping Anons
Please stop this nonsense. If you don't like the discussion at hand, either find another place to visit or keep checking back in until something scratches your itch. But for the love of all that's good, stop this lunacy. Stop the "pals" and "bubs" stated for the sole purpose of irritating your foil. Stop claiming that Anon A is also Anon B. Stop trying to one up each other via the game of "gotcha." Stop trying to play amateur logician. Just. Stop. It. Please.

Listening: I'm a 1310 guy, all the way. I listen on my CCrane portable am/fm when at home and at work (headphones for work, of course), car radio while in transit.

  79. For what it's worth, I believe I'm on record as having said that Becca's "pause" has grown on me. I noticed it pretty much immediately, but was indifferent. Now, it's something I associate with her delivery, and I like it. There!

  81. The Lodge just spoofed the Non-24 commercial. Let's see if it's still fresh enough in my mind:

"You can't see me because I'm on the radio. And I can't see you...

...cuz I'm at the LODGE, buddy!"

Pretty funny, if you don't mind strip clubs making fun of malady. Ah, who am I kidding - I giggled.

I've got about 4 or 5 of those but some I didn't realize they existed. Nice collection although $100 is pretty steep.

  84. It's been a 1310 day. Weather changes are playing hell with the FM signal north of Dallas.
