OVERLISTENING: Did Vinny Misspseak?

See it all the time.  A word here, a word there, we try to figure out what's going on, sometimes we overfigure.  This site has been known to do this.

I'm going to do it now.

Today's Picking Games Against an Unlucky P1.

Caller:  Vinny.

We learn that Vinny is in "tax."

Musers: "Generic."

Then a Muser said something said that I don't remember, and Vinny responded:

"Yeah, Fernando woke me up."

Did anyone other than your overlistening Plainsman slam on the brakes, veer into the JOAN RIVERS RIP billboard on the Tollway, smear Sausage McMuffin with Egg all over the windshield, and go: "Whoa -- the Unlucky P1 is not just some random spare caller waiting on the line on Friday morning, but is known to and selected by The Ticket, or Fernando, well in advance of bedtime Thursday night on some non-random basis?"

George (I believe), awkwardly, before immediately changing the subject:  "I don't think Fernando called and woke you up."

And that was that.

Vinny may have been making a joke.

Sure, gotta be it.

"Oh, hi, Fernando.   6:50 already?  Yeah, just woke up.  Sure, I'm feeling unlucky today.  How 'bout you, Fernando, do you feel lucky?  Well, do ya, punk?  Hey, it's a joke, from the movie, you know.  Hey, thanks for the wakeup, didn't want to miss my big moment on The Ticket..  See you later.  Go ahead, put Georgio on,  I'll give that big shaggy noble mon some picks, you betcha."

  1. Considering there has never been an invitation to call, email or send snail mail to the Musers to be in the group of 'random' P1 selectors I am inclined to think Vinny let slip the info.

Has there ever been a call out for P1s to enter their names into a hat? Maybe I missed it, but I certainly do not recall any reminders.
If then the producer does call then how do we get on that list? Where is this list? Is it perhaps humans who have at some point or another contributed to one of the Muser's charity functions? Vaginal slice born born guy has no chance to ever pick games? Or the lady that loves Jub madly?

  2. Good catch Plainsman. I will say that I was always under the impression the caller was selected from somewhere prior to the Friday morning segment. I don't know how it's done. And from what you heard, The Musers don't want anyone to know either.

Speaking of weekly picks, is anyone listening to BaD doing their weekly pics with the dude from KidnPlay? The on-air boner Jake and Dan are getting with Chris Reid's weed references is laughable. Did they snort viagra before the segment because their marijuana hard-ons were busting through the airwaves.

I think it may be the Colorado legalization has given all the partakers at The Ticket that extra gumption to convey their giddiness on air for recreational use. Corky took it to another level with his "awesome" acid trip golf outings yesterday. Sweet bro.

  3. They invite callers about 15 minutes before the picking segment begins. They did it today.

  4. Yeah, Shaggy, that's what I thought. Vinny's statement, of course, suggests that he had been selected in advance of that invitation on a non-random basis. Which is why it caught my attention and engaged all my powers of overlistening.

  5. I don't pay a lot of attention to that segment, in fact it's usually a punchout for me. But I know of one caller who has done it twice.

  6. Yeah, I was just addressing cactus.

  8. Wash is gone, great guy, decent manager. He will be missed.

  9. At least we should get an engaged Old Grey Wolf this afternoon.

  10. @Shaggy

Gotcha. I am usually running around getting the day together about that time of the morning. Betting he was on hold and snoozing when Fernando woke him up.

Speculations flying all around like lava rocks in Iceland. Bye OSB.

  11. Before the boys get all wrapped around the axle about the lack of information about Wash, they need to think back to how free the Ticket was with information about Greggo when he was shown the door.

  12. Surely it's a coincidence that they just ran the "Doing the Greggo" open for CQH.

  13. All right, here's the deal on picking pickers for the picks of the week:

At some point, usually at the beginning of the O-Deck or right before the replay, Junez mentions something about calling in to pick the picks of the week with them.

At this point, the calls come in. Some weeks are better than others. Fernando answers all the calls and gets the phone numbers from people who call, then right before the Picks segment, he picks one of them and calls them back. He has his own criteria for picking pickers, such as entertainment potential, but I can guarantee that it's always legit. Sure, someone might get in a second time, but it's not due to any chicanery on anyone's part.

Vinny likely dozed off between calling in and Fernando calling him back. That's all, nothing to see here, move along, move along.

  14. I dunno, Fernando seems like too much of a woman to call someone back if they hang up on him, accidentally or not.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've been hung up on by plenty of women. Thanks for the insight Jer...

  16. Thanks for the skinny, Big Strong. As always, 'preciate ya, pal. Really 'preciate ya.

Now if you want to go ahead and pass along the real story as to why Brogan was canned, by all means, do so!

  17. You mean . . . my overlistening resulted in implied incorrect speculation! I'm shocked, shocked.

  18. I guess I should go back to not listening enough, of which my tormentor frequently accuses me.

  19. @pDub,
From you post on the previous thread regarding...
“Here's a question: what would it take and would it possible to make an ad-free app that charges a small subscription fee?”

Keep in mind that Cumulus does not make money on any stream, less the KTCK stream. And while they have the date in regards to those who listened to the station via the pre-iHeart stream (and both Musers and Hardline used to talk about where theticket.com got hits from) it is still hard to monetize and harder to have subscribers.

Plus, even if there was such an option, you would still hear the generic “bumper music” because there would not be any royalties to pay and they would most likely want to play something during terrestrial radio ads being played. Dead air would never look good. That same song is played because Cumulus most likely owns it and does not owe the writer any more royalties.

I did hear Vinny today and did not care at all, but I was busy in doing other things this morning, even here.

ASIDE: Christopher “Kid” Reid of “Kid 'n Play” fame is very good on BaD Radio. His nearly 30 years in the media and talking to people on the radio is refreshing. While I have heard Reid talk about his personally listening to The Ticket, he made the picks segment, but not talking about weed, but rather throwing in all the characters he has heard. He mentioned “The Crazy Prospector” like it was an aside from someone who lives in L.A.! Plus, he seems to always to be prepared and puts Bob him his place beyond his ability to watch, “Yo! MTV Raps” as a teen and Dan cannot talk down to him as he does to “Computer” or any other black male his age.

  20. Um, DA, Kid did talk about weed: He started the segment off with an imitation of MLK saying "weed at last, weed at last, thank God almighty, weed at last." I agree with you that Kid is great with BaD and his Ticket P1 knowledge is impressive on a few different levels. Though I can't follow you on Dan talking down to Computer and not being able to with Kid. As if he wishes to talk down to Kid but can't due to Kid's intelligence and quick, biting wit.

  21. Anyone else disappointed that after the Ron Washington news broke on twitter, it wasn't mentioned on Bad Radio until WTDS? They finished the segment on picking games with Computer and Kid.

As soon as I saw the local beat writers reporting it on twitter, I tuned in, "expecting to hear it here first." Nope. No breaking news sounder. Flipped over to 105.3 and 103.3 and they were already talking about. Ben or Skin (never can tell who is who) had already talked to a couple "inside sources."

I know it's a lost Ranger season, but when the manager who took you to 2 World Series suddenly steps down, I would expect the leading sports talk radio station in town to interrupt their bit and cover the story.

  22. 1:09 - We learned about the news right at the end of the segment. We played the breaking news sounder once we got all the facts straight during the break at 2:57. I was in the Ticker room with Justin when it happened. We got the news out as quick as possible.

  23. Cray Trey, if that's you, thanks for chiming in and for setting the record straight. Very cool to see you on here.

  24. this is vinny...I called in and Fernando said...ok vinny, give me your number and if we need you we will call you back...so I went back to sleep and he called me...

  25. 1:09

I noticed on Twitter around 253 or so that the Wash news broke and received an email from the club right around then. Once we confirmed with a couple people we jumped right on it.

  26. Loving this! We have Jer, Trey, and Justin checking in to verify, support, and in general keep us on track. Then we have the caller in question pop on Jer and back up Jer (which we already took Jer's word as gospel). Very cool, indeed! Luv me some MTC!

  27. I echo the above. What's the quickest, easiest way to register a name? I don't social network so I don't have facepage or twatter or anything like such as that. Please and thank you.

  28. 448: When you leave a comment, click the circle that says "Name/URL." Then just enter a name. You don't have to enter a URL. Just enter the same name every time, and you'll soon develop an identity at My Ticket Confession. That's how I'm leaving this comment. Easy-Deezy.

  29. Nice to see a little love for Your Plainsman.

It's clear: I need to reach questionable conclusions more often, and then we hear from the JV.

In general, though, I'd prefer to make accurate inferences.

Thanks to Justin, Jer, Trey, and Vinny.

So someone at The Ticket is tuning in, although maybe someone checks it and spreads it around when we (I) put the pieces together wrong.

  30. I too have called in and done picks with the Musers. Fernando does call back right before the segment. It is indeed not planned beforehand.

  31. Cumulus makes money on all streams...otherwise why bother. It's not spot $, but it's still money.
