The "Stay In Your Silo" Theory Results in a Snoring White Elephant

Early reviews on the White Elephant drawing are not enthusiastic.

Interesting that Cat has required that hosts stay hosts, producers stay producers, no participation by weekend JV.

Any organization will inevitably segment itself into castes -- remember high school "cliques"? -- who tend to stick together, excluding those in lesser castes and yearning to be accepted into the greater castes.

The "silo theory" eliminates the possibility that the resulting tension will add any interest to White Elephant day.  It might end up being fun, always enjoyable to hear guys who don't hang together too much do a show.

But it will be pretty  .  .  .  white.

  1. everyone should be included and all jobs should be able to be filled by anyone for maximum white elephant enjoyment

  2. Give it a chance P-man...though I would've enjoyed a real mix and match too, but the White Elephant is always good times

  3. I was definitely disappointed that we would not hear Junez do tickers or Sean Bass try to interview Rick Carlisle again for pure e-brake gold. It was interesting that they included the Top 10. I don't think they have done that before. I also agreed with Corby that I think Gordon gets 10-noon almost every year. When all was said and done, I think the host mish-mash ended up a good one this year. No one is doing their own time slot, Corby and Dan have to get up early. Gordon and Rhynes at 10-noone will be dominated by Gordon. Bob and Junior in evening drive will be the most analytical 4 hours in the history of the ticket.

  4. The pairings almost make it sound like "someone" is getting tired of this bit.
    Should be a fun day.

Does anyone have a link to the copyright law Mike and Corby were talking about the other day pertaining to bootleg recordings? I have several friends who have been recording various local and national artist for years and would like to get a copy of this to them.

    1. You're taking a major jump assuming that Corby has any real documentation to backup any of his commentary.

  5. I actually like TC and I generally hate the Ticket Mouse, but the Ticket Mouse kicking Totally Chuck in the nads this morning was laugh out loud gold. I just about spit out my coffee when I heard the Ticket Mouse ask the Musers "who's this lesbian you guys have doing tickers today"

    ReplyDelete
  6. It's time to make the Ticket great again!

Have all the hosts refer to T.C. as the lesbian they have doing tickers.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Add me to the long list of listeners who regard bits like Donovan or Craig as Ticker guys as the funniest White Elephant moments. In order to White Elephant to have value, the guys need to be pushed out of their comfort zone.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm with others in strongly preferring mixing and matching hosts and Ticker guys, and perhaps producers as well. Ticketstock and the GNO roundtables already provide opportunities to hear hosts from different shows together, though admittedly more of them at a time and not for entire shifts. And why even bother to juggle the Ticker guys in isolation? Hearing them to do what they normally do, just at different times, is not exactly much of a novelty.

  9. I also am disappointed. WE is always stop down for me. This time, I may just catch the Top 10.

  10. Gordo's classic audio segment this morning "highlighting monosyllabically named P1s" was excellent. I've heard all the Norm rants before but they still had me laughing out loud like crazy.

On a less positive note, I will never understand the need of corporations to change things up for no reason and in the process make them much worse. I'm referring to the new version of the Sportsday Talk app. It sucks. One issue is you can no longer fast forward for 15 seconds after you've had it paused, instead it skips you immediately to the live broadcast. If anyone has suggestions for another better streaming option it would be much appreciated (I sometimes use TuneIn but it has its own issues).

    ReplyDelete
  11. You can use the back feature to rewind 15 seconds at a time. Just keep tapping it until you go from live to however far back you want. I have backed up a full 30 minutes before by tapping 120 times.

  14. Man, I generally like Machine when it comes to sports talk, but that dude is insufferable when it comes to politics. The Ticket JV has quite a case of Twitter muscles. They probably don't care right now but it may hurt them in the long run if they desire to move up to the main team. Again, they are more than welcome to have their political views, but running off the listeners who pay the bills is not a great strategy.

  15. Oddball question since I can't listen live...does anybody know if suave.it is still archiving current ktck shows? I don't want to subscribe if I can't listen to, say, last week's shows.

Does anybody know how the whole rebroadcast prohibition against the unticket went down?

  17. Did I miss something on That Shake Joint Thang this morning? Is Jake truly AWOL, MIA, nobody knows where he is? Or did I miss the bit?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't think it's a bit... if so, they muddled the punchline. Listened to entire show. Sea bass sounded genuinely puzzled by the absence.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think Jake just had a late night and overslept. It happens...and in true Sean form, he pretty much mentioned Jake's absence during every return. "AWOL" "Hope he's safe" "No idea where he is"....way to toss your coworker into oncoming traffic, pal. How bout step up to the plate big man and show you can handle the show as the Lead. What I'm getting at is....Less Sean. Way way way less.

As for W-E-D, i think no matter what name was drawn Cat was gonna to say the name TC for TopTen shift. I will miss Ticker gold from hosts, or Danny possibly in one of the big chairs...but i think the lineups will be solid. Mike and Gordo? YES! Wake'n Bake with Jake Corby and Dan, and Bob & Junez together with Sirios sounds good strong!

  20. @12:01 I enjoy Sean as a broadcaster. Good dude and great baseball insight most days. But I completely agree with you on him throwing Jake under the bus. If it was just a joke and they knew what was up with his absence, then it was just unfunny and repetitive. If they were indeed unaware of his well being, then yes, very sorry. What if something actually did happen? All of those comments would look TERRIBLE.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Agree it got downright bizarre this morning when Sean kept harping on fact that Jake went missing. Instead of just saying Justin in for Jake this morning and moving on they kept pointing out that Jake wasn't anywhere to be found. Reminds me of when a co-worker will vociferously say "what are you doing in so early today" to undercut his fellow employee and make himself look superior.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Between Twitter hysterics, Twitter bullying, and constant in air java at co-workers (kidding, semi-kidding, or real), do not be shocked to see either or both Sean and "Machine" gone soonish.

Scuttlebutt, birds chirping, just sayin', Don not be surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  23. On air jabs, not in air java. Dum dum iPad.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @8:02 yes, you've mentioned this multiple times before. But in the age of social media, if corporations axed employees for having "hot political opinions"... And by HPO'S, I mean anything short of hate speech, there wouldn't be anyone under the age of 40 employed in this great nation of our's.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 802, I doubt either is on the hot seat.

Sean has been promoted into low-level management. I would, indeed, be shocked to see him gone soonish or laterish, unless he is lured away by another station.

Same with Machine. He kinda leapfrogged some other JVs to do the M+M showgram on Saturdays; it seems pretty clear that Cat is fostering a youth movement with these weekend shows, seeing who sticks and clicks with the younger P1. The CTO will put up with a pretty high degree of snottiness or nonpeperformance (Logan Gourley) before anyone is shown the door. After all, they rehired T.C. If anything is going on with Machine behind the scenes, it has not come to this site's attention.

Not seeing any big changes. You got some hard info to the contrary, let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Seriously doubt Sean or Machine are going anywhere, although I'll admit I had to unfollow both of them on Twitter because of their election bellyaching. Machine is the worst. All he does is backhandedly insult anyone who voted for Trump.... not only that, but when he tweets he uses a vernacular that could only be described as juvenile. He always talks about things being "lit" and people "seeing these hands". It's like listening to a 17 year old. I'm 33 and I have no clue what he's saying half the time.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Princess Dumpy Rumpy Bifta, the UnTicket announced that he was no longer putting full episodes out there anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mike Marshall has been suspended once for his Twitter activities. Sean Bass has changed his Twitter handle from including 1310 to not including it...right after a spate of immature, profane election related rants. Coincidence? Perhaps. Again, unless behavior patterns are altered, don't be surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @10:54 I'm not aware of the mike marshall suspension. What was it for?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Twitter activity. Earlier this year.

  31. I really do not understand the recent decision by Cumulus and The Ticket to effectively shut down SportsGreek/UnTicket from posting full episodes reasonably soon after they air. Apparently the CTO demanded a 2-3 day lag before any full episodes could be posted, and I don't blame SportsGreek for not wanting to deal with that. What the hell is the point of mandating the delay? Are they really that scared about people choosing to listen to the podcasts instead of listening live?

    ReplyDelete
  32. @845 minor correction: HSOs that are non-conforming to the current PC norms will indeed subject those uttering/posting to career disruption and/or termination. Just ask Brendan Eich, Curt Schilling, Rush, Craig James, et al. You are correct in that SeaBass and Machine are posting the "right" opinions and therefore have nary a concern...

  33. Colorado P1:
I wonder if this was just a D/FW ban or if it is nationwide?
I would think either a sponsor thought they were not getting all the exposure they thought they were paying for or the podcast don't figure into the day to day ratings.
Usually, this is a follow the money type deal.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Gopher & @ColoradoP1,

This is a local issue, not national.

Cumulus stations in L.A. and SF run same day, ad-free podcast. Keep in mind, in DC, Tony Kornheiser had a 24 hour for over 4 years.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2015/03/23/tony-kornheiser-announces-the-end-of-his-espn-980-podcast-delay/

There still a cost to the station to produce an ad free podcast in terms of labor. I wouldn't be shocked if that HuffDuffer was doing caused issues with residuals too.

  35. I think the digital "strategy" under Jeff Catlin is very shortsighted. First off, the day's highlights are not consistently being uploaded to the SportsDay app. And nothing gets uploaded when the Stars are playing. But his overall attitude is that he is against making the shows available for the fans immediately after they air because he thinks less people will tune in live. I feel if the shows were available for streaming or download immediately afterwards, it would actually increase your overall listener base and obviously make the fans very happy. People will get hooked on it and they will tune in live. Monetize it like other successful podcasts do. Cat is so out of touch with the modern audience and digital media in general.

    ReplyDelete
  36. A lot of TV shows that are available as On Demand offerings or archived shows are set up so that you cannot fast forward through them. So you can't skip over the commercials. But you have to use the provider's media player, which controls your ability to fast forward. Which means no mp3 download.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I doubt Cat has anything to do with policy regarding such matters. He's a PD, not a tech exec and\or corp lawyer.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Look Cat has to deal with a lot on a daily basis. This station has always walked the line of appropriateness and dare I say legality. Hell today I had to listen to a mediocre yuck monkey talk about the Big 12 Championship during the 5:15 segment. The same XII Championship game that hasn't existed for years. This was after he was calling half the populous dumb and idiotic. He has bigger problems. That's after he deals with on air talent telling him to STFU on the air..

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you for the insight DA, but man that's frustrating! Full-show podcasts are OK for L.A. and SF but not for DFW? I don't get it. The Ticket dominates the ratings and I agree with The Tricky Kid that making it hard or impossible for devoted P1s to listen on an altered schedule seems like a horrible strategy overall. I have already found myself choosing the Bomani Jones podcast over the Ticket shows each night when I have time to listen to something after the kids are in bed.

  44. Is it just me or is Troy's phone connection consistently awful?

    ReplyDelete
  45. @ Kyle Foster,

It's not just you. I have never understood why in a segment they care a lot about, they have not been able to find a better way to interview Troy. Maybe have him always call on a land line? Maybe if he insists on calling in on a cell, have him sit in 1 place and not be moving around? It's ridiculous.

I thought for sure he would be in studio today since he is in town and they had Buck up there, but nope. Another awful phone call.

    ReplyDelete
  46. If I had a weekly show on the Ticket I don't know where I'd go to find a landline to call in

    ReplyDelete
  47. I thought I was the only one having trouble understanding Troy each week. The phone line quality is the worst of any regular guest I've ever heard on the station. Do they not know about it?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am not knowledgeable about technical issues with radio but heard something a year or two ago when THL was having problems with a remote. So, maybe Troy is taking his kids to school at 7:55 or leaving the AMPS or in some other situation where he has to be on the phone. I feel sure he has an office at his house (not the one he just sold in Preston Hollow) and he should have access to technology. Unless he is in his car.

    http://bdcast.com/products/audio-data-links/marti/rpu-remote-broadcast

I think this is what I heard one day when the behind-the-scenes wasn't working and someone on the THL did not know they were broadcasting asked about the Marti working. (It was a case of we could hear them but they could not hear the station.)

Also, a quick google search showed that an ISDN line could be plugged into Troy's computer and he could speak into his mike.

(In another off-base comment - I think WBAP had a report one time that the guy who invented Marti was from the Dallas area. But I may be mistaken.)

Again, I may be mistaken on all of the above. Please be gentle.
