More Country Force, Please

Country Force, starring Ty Walker and Eli Jordan, is rapidly becoming one of my favorite shows on The Ticket -- JV and varsity.  So far it's been something of a pirate show, an ad hoc fill-in when some JV show can't make it onto the air for one reason or another.

However, yesterday we were treated to a Country Force Hall of Fame show on the late-Saturday-afternoon graveyard shift.  A really enjoyable listen on a nothingburger topic.  That's hard to do.  Giving the lads a bonus Ticket "special" to host is a step in the right direction.

In addition to finding both Ty and Eli enjoyable radio presences, I am attracted to the show because there is so little BS in it.  This is a show that gets to the sports point, has almost no time for current events, and states its positions plainly without a lot of back-filling and ass-covering and excuse-making.  On more than one of the current offerings (weekday and weekend) I'm finding my finger hovering over the PO button pretty much the entire show.

Country Force comes blowing through the speakers like a cleansing prairie wind.

CONFIDENTIAL TO THE WESTERN-HEMISPHERICAL CATMAN:   Consider jiggering the Saturday lineup to give us a regularly-scheduled CF, or add it as original Ticket content on Sunday.  Make it the go-to fill-in show when a weekday show is on vacation.

Hell, I'll sponsor the thing.

Ty Walker is never underwater.

Someday, Eli Jordan will have his own Fathead.

  1. Couldn't agree with you more, on all points, Pman. Huge CF P1, here. They remind me of Ticket showgrams the way they used to be back in the Halcyon days. Solid no bs sports talk with the sort of guy talk the majority of us guys can relate to and almost zero socio-political noise.

Please, Cat, CF needs a regular slot. Indeed, the P1 and so the station needs it. Very weary of the constant barrage of socio-political HSOs that seem to dominate every show's-- sans The Kick Around-- duscourse.

  2. I agree. Has to be better than Not A Podcast, the Saturday morning time kill. Water heater talk? Unlistenable. I miss Davey Lane.

  3. I'll admit, as much as I like Old Monty, I refuse to listen to NaP because Machine is such a D on Twitter and in general. He/they have every right to say whatever they want on Twitter and on the airwaves, and I have every right to punch out. Country Force is a good strong!

  4. I am sure this has been talked over but why are there not more JV shows at night or weekends? I won't mention the stations but those of us driving around after 7 want some local sports talk. I became a big nation listener hearing them 7-11 or so each night. It seems a lot of the Saturday shows for the Ticket are also just running out the clock sans Kickaround. At least that how it appeared this weekend. Why are the one off shows so few and far between and seem to end so quickly. I liked the show about games with Trey (think it was him?). It seems there is no room to get all the JV's in during the day none of them want a 7-9 or 10 pm shift during the week? Are they having to pay for the timeslots themselves? If nothing else it gives them a chance to work on material, preparation, whatever else while not impacting ratings much. It would be nice to have something in the market to listen to at night time/weekend shows that care.

  5. To add onto the comment I made at 5:53 PM, Country Force is a good listen when they get a chance. Is the Circ show a bit or they really just don't want to be there?

  6. There was a time, long ago, when The Ticket had weeknight and even weekend night shows. It's how Gordon cut his hosting teeth--first at night, then came The Rant. Bob, too, when first brought onboard, before BaD, hosted nights. Somewhere along the line, the national feed (which was always a player) became more prevalent. I think it has to do with money. My understanding is that it's cheaper to run the feed and pay a board op than it is to pay a host(s) and a board op and whomever else it requires to run a local, live show. But I'm right there with you, 554. I too wish we could listen to local stuff until 11 or 12, then hand it off to Ferrall or whatever.

I know there's the Sunday Local Show. But I'm sorry, it's not good. Way too niche. It's the same bands over and over, and they seem like they're picked based on their friendship with Mark and/or how much coverage The Dallas Observer gives them. Nothing ever on the more rock n roll or punk or metal side of things. It's all keyboards, alt-country-shoe-gazer stuff.

  7. I've enjoyed CF the few times I've heard it. They did a pretty fun segment on Evil Knievel a few weeks back and I seem to recall them doing a bit on the XFL long before the 30 for 30 came out. I'm with you, P-Man. Not a lot of fluff and political nonsense, and that's something we desperately need.

  8. Since we're on the JV'ers, I got a little ticked at Cash bitching about the policeman playing a little street B-ball with the kids instead of so called "doing his job"! Cash my friend...it's about mending fences. Good on the police officer.

  11. Ummm...Hate to break it to you, Slinky..but you're sideways on a lot of facts here. You're basically fake news...

First, you've fallen into the "I can't tell the Sirois Brothers apart" trap....(something that is about to get some serious attention with Mike's Ticketstock song, which I urge you not to miss)...

That's right, it was Mike that was telling the cop to do his job, where I was applauding him for building bridges in the community.

    Secondly, Mike was joking.

But most importantly, thanks for listening to The Cirque du Sirois show...one of the shows on Saturdays on The Ticket....and the best weekend show on Saturdays from 12-2pm CST.

  12. Cash, I'll admit I don't get to listen on weekends as much as I'd like; that's why I'm not completely familiar with all the "JV'ers". I think my comment was taken a little more heavy handed than intended. But I've always enjoyed you guys when I get the chance to listen. Definitely a fan.

  14. The Hardline takes it in the keester in the comments here from time to time, but once again -- I was listening yesterday and I laughed out loud at the story of the tattooed criminal with FART (or, as it turned out, FTRA for "Freight Train Riders of America"), punctuated by Corby spilling his lobster -- lobster! -- on the floor.

I mean, where else you gonna get classy broadcasting like that?

  15. Unless I missed another segment recently, Gordon finally came up with enough "Manson-isms" to fill a whole segment with Fake Charles this morning. I had heard it bubbling up for some time and figured Charles would call in soon. I think Gordon likes being Fake Manson because it's a way to bring back Fake Greggo under a veil, avoiding mention of his name and treading in to litigious waters. Who knows. I don't know why, but it makes me mad that I laugh so hard.

Speaking of laughing, is there a drop page where all those slo-mo recordings are housed? Side-splitting stuff.

  20. Dear Dan, Sean Bass, Jake, TC, and other political wonk wannabes:

Please stop it. Just stop it. Now. Please. I beg you. All of you. You are ruining my favorite station. I really like all of you guys. Could care less about your political views. If I did, I'd listen to NPR or KLIF or KSKY or watch FOX News or CNN or MSNBC. I don't. I listen to The Ticket. I have for years. But you guys and your snark and your inability to just. leave. it. the. fuck. alone. is KILLING ME. I'm not the only one, I promise you. Not by a long shot.

I DON'T WANT POLITICS, I WANT SPORTSY GUY FUN TIMES RADIO! See, you made me yell at my producer.

  21. Fake Manson is my new favorite. Twice a month with the occasional 10 second burst seems about the right dosage.

Re 1:44 P.M.: We all have outgroups -- for the more chin-stroking pseudo-intellectual Confessor (and that includes me), I highly recommend reading the post from slatestarcodex called "I can tolerate anything except the outgroup" (tldr version: everyone loves tolerance unless it requires tolerating some group close to you, with whom you have many things in common, and yet a group with whom you are engaged in constant feuds and mutual ridicule).

TC's issue is that his outgroup is basically mid-cities white evangelical Christians. I am neither white, nor from the mid-cities, but I am evangelical, and it gets, really, really old.

I get that people have strong feelings bout politics these days -- the IJB right after the election was just... something. I really, really loved listening to IJB and now I can't. TC just cannot be charitable to those with whom he disagrees (see his Brexit podcast as well from last summer). Jake can, which is why I can still Shake Joint with him on Sundays. But man, when politics becomes existential to you, it ruins everything you touch... I've been there, and have had it effect close relationships adversely -- my fault, because rather than love Jesus, football, or organically grown coffee, I allowed politics to be the most important thing. I think with age and a little one, I have done a good job of recognizing that "opponent" and "enemy" are not synonyms...

I'm not advocating disengagement - but The Ticket's strength is that we can listen to fun drops, fake characters, and the occasional nerdy sports segment without agreeing about "real world" issues. I can't remember where, but there a great commentary the other day that basically said "Look, the game is on, can we not talk about Trump or marches for a couple of hours?" I am VERY involved in politics, but man, I need a break now and then. Some people can't let it go -- I go on Facebook to see someone's new dog/wife//baby/truck/gun, not your ill-thought out screed about how progressives in pink hats are ruining America, or that Trump is building camps for Oswald-loving trans curious men named Gordon. I have decades long friends who saw each other through deaths of spouses and children, cancer and exotic virus, only to now be no longer on speaking terms because of an election.

To The Ticket and Her Hosts I say this: Please, be kind to your audience... Don't just stick to sports, but PLEASE, PLEASE stay away from this poison that is spreading everywhere. Nothing good is going to come of it... nothing.

  22. blergoyen: I highly doubt they have any concern whatsoever about possible litigation from Greggo. It's been 10 years. They do mention his name on the station from time to time these days and I've never heard anything that would be considered defamatory. I don't think Greggo is in much of a position to sue anyone for defamation anyway, especially given what he has admitted to in media interviews.

geesh..that was spot on. Good work mister (or Ms.) I haven't lived through the dying spouses and exotic viruses, but I can remember how the 2000 election had me REALLY worked up and after 60-90 days or so, I vowed never again to get so worked up. I realized as a Conservative Catholic, that if I couldn't tolerate people with different beliefs it meant I couldn't like Jimmy Buffett any more, and well....I wanted to like Jimmy Buffett, and the Dixie Chicks, and half of Hollywood. We didn't elect a dictator, he's just the president, and our system has the checks and balances. We're seeing them work.
I agree with anon...cut the toxic crap, we can get that anywhere right now. Peace.

  24. horny guy and 238: I've been pondering what to write about the excessive political talk on The Ticket since the recent election. I've punched out so much on weekdays and weekends over the past month that I'm wondering if I can even be counted as a listener any more. You guys have said it as well as I could. I'd definitely add another name or two to horny guy's list of sorry pundit pretenders.

I don't care what the Ticket guys' politics are, collectively or individually. All I want is for them not to sound dumb.

And when they talk politics, and current events, they do, much too often, even when I agree with them. I do agree with their political commentary some of the time, but it doesn't stop me from cringing when it's clear they either don't know what they're talking about, or they do, but don't show the same acuity when observing the antics on the other side of the aisle.

Is it wrecking The Ticket? I think it has noticeably damaged at least a couple of the shows. The worst offender goes out of his way to throw in not-so-clever non sequitur political observations, and now when I punch into that show I hang in there until the sneering starts, and then I'm gone and I don't come back.

I'm mildly surprised Cat hasn't put a lid on some of this. I know the shows take pride in not being rode too hard by Ticket management, not having content dictated to them.

    But . . . it's time, buddy. It's time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, I'm guessing you guy's are speaking maybe of THL. I love the Musers, but they're a little too early for me. I catch them on top 10. The only Ticket weekday show I catch live is BaD, and I really don't hear too much political talk. After watching a segment on Dish Nation [first time I've watched in years], they were talking about the Cash Me Out girl fighting on a plane. I finally googled what this "Cash Me Out" was all about, so it's fairly new to me. I've been cracking up on BaD's "Cash Me Ouside..How Bow Dae" segments. Don't waste time with THL, so not sure what they talk about.

  26. I used to piss and moan about signal talk on this site. Man, how I wish for those days. Because now I have a great signal, but I'm saddled with vitrue signal issues. A problem that, just like the old station signal issue, is every bit as real and is every bit, if not potentially more, detrimental to\for (oh that dative case!) the P1...and so, the health of the station.

  27. Someone ask Greggo on twitter if he would come back to the station if they ask him to. He said they will when the ratings start to sag and he would come back in a heartbeat. Somehow I doubt they ever will. That boat has sailed.

Over/under on his "tell all" book ever being written?

    ReplyDelete
  28. HeeHoo will never, ever be back at The Ticket.

The instability and anger of his Twitter account alone is enough to send any rational station management into shock. His prime-time suitability has not changed for the better since he was invited to depart all those years ago. His stint with Richie Whitt on The Fan also suggested that he had not learned anything from his stumbles at The Ticket.

Greg Williams was a true radio original, and a talent. People who look back at the "old Hardline" with good-old-days fondness are not wrong. But those good old days got bad. Comes a point, and it came for him in spades.

  29. @ all Re: Political talk

I disagree with this, I actually enjoy political talk on The Ticket (Minus THL, but there's a larger issue there)...I think Partly because I don't get worked up about it, The Musers generally point out the absurdity on both sides, and kind of make it funny in some ways. TC has a condescending delivery which I don't think helps his cause with alot of things both on sports and life. BAD generally does a deep nerdy dive on topics to help you understand them better, and understands there is such a thing as nuance. Do they all have their point of view, yes, but I do agree with you guys on one thing regarding politics... just don't let it get you all worked up because it will drive you crazy.

  30. Boo!, you are a gentle soul.

It's not so much the talk, it's that that kind of talk is what I tune in to The Ticket to avoid. I can get those topics covered in lots of other places from talking heads and writers who have some broad notion of what they're talking about.

Sadly, that seldom characterizes The Ticket poli-talk.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think I see what Boo means, and I agree. The way Corby and Danny do political talk is irritating, because their words carry an assertion that they are right and to disagree with them is to be wrong. Gordo, on the other hand, is even-handed, and points out the folly in the beliefs of both sides. That's the difference in a nutshell

    ReplyDelete
  32. @plainsman

    Thanks!

I totally understand where you're coming from now...I do think that the ticket has always encompassed things that we experience on a day to day basis as fellas of the modern world, it's unfortunate that politics has creeped into everyone's day to day and the little ticket is just reflecting that. (note: I'm 31, so politics may have always been in everyone's day to day, but it seems more-so now given our hyper connected world)

Much thanks plansman and other commenters for keeping this convo going

  34. To paraphrase Joonz: "I want that job. The one where I can do more to belittle [name the conservative or GOP figure] and then get to say I don't mean it." THAT is Gordo vis-a-vis politics in a nutshell. His "moderate, even-handed disposition" consists of (very funny) caricatures of all people/ideas on the Right "balanced" with a toss away "but I have liberal friends who also do X from time to time." Sorry, that's not even-handed. While I find ALL of his caricatures funny as hell, make no mistake, he's not even-handed. Not by a long shot. Caricatures, often on the cruel side and often patently untrue, "tempered" by alternately softening one's voice to NPR levels in order to give off some sense of fairness...is window dressing.

  38. 905, I'm remembering the hilarious send-ups of Al Gore, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Gordon may tilt somewhat left-of-center, but not all the way, and not without considering the merits of the other side. His commentary since the election has been mostly (not entirely) moderate in tone and content. In any event, tolerable, unlike some of the politalk that sends me to my Kurt Elling CDs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'll give you Al Gore and Clinton. I can count on one hand the times he imitated Obama during his 8 years in office. Like you, I couldn't give a fig about what side of aisle they tilt towards. Truth is, I too am a bit leftish of center. But I disagree with the idea that Gordon is somehow even-handed. In all the years and all the countless faux political ads he's done (and I can't tell you how many times I've almost spit out my coffee laughing) he's done maybe 3 that caricatured the Left. Heck, even his Gore and Clinton impersonations were goofs on their sexual identities and/or appetites --- and not attacks on their intelligence. I think what we have here is a pool of egregiously low-informed political prognosticators. Some are so inane, that by their standard of pol-talk, someone like Gordon comes off as a cross between Mort Kondracke and Lionel Trilling.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I stand by my assertion that Gordo is even-handed, if for no other reason than he acknowledges that libs are inconsistent and their positions often don't make sense. Remember the context of my earlier comment: I was comparing them to "I'm right and you're wrong" Danny and Corby. By comparison, Gordo is much more fair to both sides.

For the record, I lean hard to the right.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Then you agree with me, James: [From my above comment] " I think what we have here is a pool of egregiously low-informed political prognosticators. Some are so inane, that by their standard of pol-talk, someone like Gordon comes off as a cross between Mort Kondracke and Lionel Trilling."

    ReplyDelete
  42. Plainsman, I think your assessment of gordo is off. Gordo proclaimed his liberal (his word) stance last fall, and he in no way intimated he was moderate. Around the same time he came out of the political closet he responded on air to all the twitter and email "flack" he was getting from listeners claiming he was biased. He contradicted himself by first claiming he makes fun of both candidates equally, then, in the same sentence, he said there is just so much more material on Trump. To make a conclusion like that shows distinct bias all by itself.

I'm not going to get in to the minutia, but go see how many hits you get on the unticket for presidential candidates in the last few elections. I think you'll see who is heavily over-represented.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think you can be a social progressive (which Gordo clearly is) and still make fun of the folly of the two-party-everything-is-binary political system we live in (which Gordo clearly does). Of all the hosts, I think Gordo does a pretty decent (and funny) job articulating how the red-blue perpetual football game makes hypocritical homers out of everybody involved. As far as there being "more material" available on Trump, hard to disagree. Regardless of political persuasion, to a comic, Trump is more cartoonish than any of the many characters in Washington.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ah, there's the trigger word, "binary." Sorry, 1049, Boo! doesn't see it, but we both know what "binary" is code for in the pomo circles. I do agree with you that Trump is an infinite source of comedic material. I also agree that Gordo's caricatures of the Right are funny. But to claim that he is somehow down-the-middle either in his political views and/or the volume of which he caricatures the Right v. the Left, is, well, plain wrong. His caricatures and critical analyses skew heavily towards the Right. Yes, he will critique the Left from time to time; that is absolutely correct. But it's never a sustained, near daily critique (either out and out critique or critique via caricature). Instead, as I've said before, it's a tag on, and it's superficial. From the top, the use of the term "binary" in the context in which you employed it gives the game away as re your leanings. Which in turn skews your idea of a centrist outlook. And madam and/or sir, that's OK by me. I'll bet you dollars to dimes that we both lean the same way. My "beef" here is that we should be objective and honest about this particular.

    ReplyDelete
  45. We seem to agree on some things 2:23, but I'm just not following you on the tenor of your post in general. I led off by saying Gordon is a social progressive, which is left of center by definition! So surely you're not looking at me as claiming he's down the middle. That's my point -- one can have views on various pertinent issues and still lampoon the manipulation-fest by which leaders on both sides of the aisle get elected.

Not seeing the gripe you have with "binary" here -- it seems much of the electorate in this country sees only in binary, red or blue, so much so that it's annoying, if not unsettling. Looking around at the state of political discourse these days, among peers, on cable news, etc. -- to call it 10% substance and 90% banner-waving and spin might be generous. That's why it's refreshing to turn on the radio and hear someone like Gordo and call out that system a little bit and have some laughs at its expense.

As for the targets Gordon picks for his playlets and caricatures, is it really political-agenda-driven? I don't know, maybe. Or maybe he just picks on people who offer more comedic fodder. Obama was just too boring and nondescript -- not much material there, though not for lack of trying -- pretty sure Gordo seized on his herky jerky cadence a little bit. And there's Clinton's "no ways tired" speech. Surely she'd be in his crosshairs had she won. Also might explain why Gordo lampooned Rick Perry a bunch but Greg Abbott not so much. Perry was a gold mine. Had Gore won, Gordo woulda had a field day. Fortunately, he lost to George W, so the coffers were no less full!

  46. @4:30 no way we would have the daily micro analysis we have now if HRC had won.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @4:49 Of course there is more micro analysis of Trump as President. It's the first time a non-politician, non-military man has ever held the office! HRC would have been analyzed a lot as the first woman, but in the end, she's just a regular politician. How can you not understand that?

It's not the making fun of Trump that is the problem... Fake Trump is genius. It's not the political bias... We all have them, and many of the host's biases are obvious. It's the sneering smugness and the lack of humility that is the problem. It's the tone of "you're an idiot if you still believe [insert belief that was mainstream and espoused by conservatives and liberals from 100 A.D. to 2010 A.D.]" It's the "Trump is a uniquely bad person who all people, conservative and liberal should be appalled at... I mean, he wants a originalist on the Supreme Court!!!"

Gordo is a lib... he admits it -- I have suffered through gun control Gordo even when I am 100% convinced he is dead wrong because I know that Gordo is debating ideas and not insulting people. One of the best things Gordo has ever done that I will always remember him for is the Ed Carter he did after the Charleston shooting... I almost cried. I'm black, so I have no time for racism, but I also recognize that not every small town white guy who voted for Trump is some raving racist. What Gordon shows is a generosity of spirit that is missing in so much of our media on both sides.

When I am tuning into The Ticket to get away from the red vs. blue rock fight, I don't need snide "they're a bunch of rubes" comments, or half-baked "I read on vox.com" social commentary in the 5:00 hour....You can make fun of Trump all day long --- I am conservative and I'm fine with it. You can be a lefty -- that's fine, I am surrounded by them at work, but because we treat each other like human beings and depend on each other to succeed, we get along fine and would do anything for each other. But if you, on a "sports radio" station are going to look down your noses at people like me because I do not sign up for New York Times Editorial Board's view of the world, I am punching out.

  55. Totally agree with 5:04 above.

The social commentary crap that is sucking up so much on air oxygen these days is not what made the Ticket a station people want to listen to. People are listening for sport and humor and the social commentary is borrowing from past glory to get people to listen and that can go on for only so long.

It reminds me of M*A*S*H. It was hilarious for many years before it got preachy and editorial. It survived off past glory for a while but ended as a shadow of its former, hilarious self.

When a show stops playing the hits (i.e. what people want to hear) and starts doing what you "need" to hear they are on a bad path.

  57. CONFIDENTIAL TO cactusflinthead:

Cac, you know the rules about name-calling. However, in deference to your status as a Legacy Late-Night Pixilated Obliquely Poetic Confessor, I excerpt and reprint the Rules-compliant portion of your comment:

    * * *

And you all are asking the littlest of Tickets to do the same as the NFL
stay in your lane and just talk sports
    i kindly say
    no
I want to hear it all
    farts at the superbowl
and Daily Trumps from the Musers
    Corbles talking about the Tower
my school and how it is the behind the scenes tour to see the holes in the limestone
i like having some politics on the ticket
even when it is my ox being gored
    because some days it ain't

  58. I've never wanted sports only. Just roasting equity. But after the last 8 years, all that's on the unticket is a couple of Bo the Water Dog call-ins. There's no way it's due to a lack of material. You shouldn't be afraid to trigger the wrong comrades.
