Another Good JaD

Heard Dan on with Jake today.  Another good show.

We've remarked on Jake's strengths, but what struck me about today's show is how sharp Dan was.  I yield to no one in my admiration and affection for Bob, but his encyclopedic sportsiness and tendency to go on some tends to leave Dan in the "sports humorist" role.  This too often consists of jabbing and teasing and exaggerating and timidly throwing out the occasional sports point, after which he says "right?" as though hoping for approval.

With Jake, who does not try to dominate the proceedings, Dan has some time to stretch out, support his opinions, talk sports.  TC was invited to pop on with OJ updates, which was fine, and Machine popped on almost not at all, so not too many voices today.

And come on, you've gotta love The Ticket.  What other show, what other network, what other medium would have the courage to do two segments on comparing "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" to "Ernest Goes to Camp."  Jake was the sole Ernest supporter; the balance of the staff came down heavily for Pee-wee and violently against Ernest.

I like them both, but come on:  Pee Wee's movie was directed by Tim Burton and written by Pee-wee (Paul Reubens), Phil Hartman, and one other.  Ernest's show was directed by someone named John R. Cherry III and written by him and one Coke Sams.  I was surprised that Jake didn't summon up the Three Stooges as examples of film figures whose rank stupidity has been entertaining men and boys for years, and Ernest strikes me as in that vein.  (Irrelevant disclosure:  The friend of a friend of mine had some role in the creation of "Ernest:  Scared Stupid," one of the lesser of the Jim Varney oeuvre.)

Pee-wee is a genius.  Bit of a wanker, but a genius.   His "Pee-wee's Playhouse" on Saturday morning, theme sung by Cyndi Lauper, Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis, the magisterial William Marshall as the King of Cartoons, Phil Hartman as Captain Carl -- was an incredibly rich and wonderous and hilarious broadcast from Puppetland.  And don't forget Miss Yvonne, The Most Beautiful Woman in Puppetland:

Jim Varney was never going to win any Oscars, but he had his charms.  I remember his pitch-work, where he was constantly tormenting his neighbor Vern, with great fondness.

Anyway, two great segments.  Good show today.

  1. So how many days from Friday until the College Football Blowhard will comment on Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss?

Plainsman, today, LeBatard spent an hour over Action Park, a 1970-80's NJ wave pool and theme park which was basically anarchy as a 15 minute YouTube doc illustrates and they got callers, texters, Twitter followers, and the current COO openly talking about the park's past. I was there at age nine or ten and recall the danger. That was fantastic radio.

On Saturday mornings, ESPN with "Marty & McGee" is two hours of southern experiences from those growing up in the 80's which even I appreciate.

Now, the better guy/sports talk is on Sirius/XM (like even Barstool) as even when I travel, local sports radio isn't good so I search for NPR cause KCRW in LA is fantastic when I drive south.

  2. DA,
You spend so much time listening to all types of exhilarating radio how do have time to gauge the quality of the Ticket?

  3. I agree with Plainsman post. It definitely falls into the “We can do what they do. They can’t do what we do” moniker. The Pee-Wee/Ernest gauntlet is niche at best similar to Norm travel talk, the Sample Platter, and whatever that video game show is that they do). It was in my wheel house though….right at the point where I was bored with Saturday morning cartoons and before I found my father’s Playboys. Ernest will always be the Braums spokesman to me.

I forgot about Miss Yvonne. I just looked up her IMDB profile and saw she is Charlie’s mom on It’s Always Sunny. I knew she looked familiar but couldn’t place her. Wow…I might have to leave work early.

Speaking of some fill in talent throwing fastballs. I have never been a Sirois fan. The weekend show is a car crash and his all too transparent admiration of Alowishus Hitzges grates me to no end. I will say that Boom in the House is starting to grow on me. Their performance this week deserves three thumbs sideways and one thumb up.

  4. @8:18AM,
I listen to many segments from "Muse News" to "Mike's Mind", but the moment any show discusses any item which is 48-72 hours old and/or I've already read the actual story they reference (which is constant), I punch out.

    Thanks, pally.

  6. Similar to ellislives, allow me to jump in with positivity. I've never been a fan of Machine, but he's done a good job this week. I almost punched out when I heard Not a Podcast was filling in for THL for a few days, but the fact that Donnie was there kept me around and I was rewarded with some great radio. Machine has also done a great job producing JaD this week - his contributions have been good and he's not overdoing it.

  7. Superlative Corby will be back telling us how he knew that Freeze was going to go down and this was expected by him all along. Vomit.

I don't know who got the brilliant idea to put the State of the Cowboys filibuster on Sunday, but I want to buy that man several adult beverages. I will gladly miss every second of it. There is no bigger beating in my sports year than having that hour long pep rally word salad interrupt my sports listening. Jerry has never seen a bad team and Jason has never ventured much more information than was already known. Unless there is some verbal misstep that is worth hearing nineteen billion times as a drop, I will be blissfully unaware of the proceedings. I dream of the day when they have JG presser3000 with commentary to his obfuscations and coach speak. The most worthless use of radio air besides Beiber.

Does LeBatard talk bout what happens in DFW? Those guys on The Worldwide Leader on Sat Mornings do they talk about DFW? If not, then I have absolutely no motivation to spend one second listening to them. I am not in NYC, nor do I have any desire to listen to the latest rundown of SEC SEC SEC. That is why I never listened to Mike and Mike. It is not possible for me to care less about the Jets or the Knicks. If I need a dose of homespun witticisms of the South I know where to fill that order and it isn't from some dudes on the radio. If I need to figure out what is happening in the far reaches of Yankeeland, one cruise by the web will suffice. I do not need those East Coast blowhards and they aren't going to miss me either. Network radio is a big bag of sucky.

Glad to see you all are faring well and the Pman is still rocking. Carry on.

    Anyone else find it?

  12. Corby can be a very engaging roving mic guy, can get some funny stuff out of his victims without being too crass or cruel.

He would be better if Danny and Mike weren't (sometimes simultaneously) barking suggested questions in his ear.

I know Danny's not there -- is he? -- but I'll bet it would be really entertaining to send him out sometime.

  13. Damn, I'm about ready to order my Trip-Tik and back my bags for the Pincushion Palace.

  14. Dan Balls is in Dallas.

Norm's constant "Donnie and I did not discuss this prior to the show...." whenever they are in perfect agreeances is unnecessary and annoying.

So effin' glad Bob's back. Sorry but JaD got old quick.

  15. Does anyone feel that Cowboys training camp coverage is over blown and forced on the P1s by the Ticket. Same tired bits over and over. Same forced and boring interviews with Cowboys players and coaches each year. You could play any of the last several years and no one could tell the difference.

It is kind of like the way the NFL forces its season ticket holders and networks to buy preseasons games. 1310 you are better than that.

I love football but the whip of hearing the same sound bites over and over on each show is a beating. Corby's stupid interviews are a whip, and yes he still sucks.

There are real stories happening out there. Yes do Cowboys, but it is okay to talk about other sports. There are real stories happening out there. Cowboys stories are "Fake News".

I am ready for September to get here. I guess I will pull out the old CD collection.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 7:52, your thoughts about training camp over-coverage are similar to mine when it comes to the draft.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Already tired of training camp coverage. It's a tired bit.

Anyone else hear the way Mike talked to Mino yesterday? Called him a "homo". Still curious if this is a bit or if Mike really has a problem with Mino now. Still not introducing him during show open. I'm a Mino fan. Hope Mike doesn't run him off.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I also agree, 7:52. Two weeks of it is such a power down.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Football player men interviews are BORING. They all say the same thing. This is THE thing that separates the little one from say The Fan in that there are much fewer of em'. However, It seems like our hosts really like it because it's a lazy way to burn a segment. It's low hanging fruit and if you really like it then listen to B & S who used to have them wall to wall.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I didn't realize that the Training Camp Fortnight was such a drag for the Confessor. I kind of like it. With some exceptions, athletes are not going to bowl you over with their broadcast charisma. But I think the Ticket hosts do try to ask some interesting questions and goad them into some personal insights. Corby, for all his excesses, is a good interviewer; the Musers can always be counted on to try to keep things lively. Like his approach or not, Dan is an unpredictable interlocutor at all times.

And sometimes they take field trips as a boy-group that can yield the occasional nugget.

I dunno. Not a thrashing for me.

  21. I was driving to Linden Tx this morning, and I had the local sports life-line station on; 1130 am-Tiger radio. I guess it's a ESPN affiliate that runs syndication until the late afternoon, then we get treated to the local talent of Bonzia Ben & john. [imagine the annoyance of Corby, only on steroids] Anyway, I hear this familiar voice being interviewed by one of the ESPN cats [didn't catch his name] but let me tell you, Bob is one professional dude; great Cowboys insight. As much as I'd hate to lose him, I could see Bob eventually going the route of a Curt Menefee.

  22. We made a decision in regards to Lucky Whitehead that was in the best interest of the Cowboys, and we're going to move forward.

  24. This site is an enormous admirer of Gordon Keith, but someone who produces as much stuff as he does is going to miss sometimes, and sometimes -- rarely -- miss very badly.

My fondness for Gordon biases me against using the words that came to mind when I heard his Dr. Vagissimus, or whatever his name was, interview of that poor rookie yesterday, rebroadcast at 640a today.

Or what I heard of it.

    Gordon at his intellectual-bullying worst.

    No Pulitzer for you today.

  25. Sorry just had to mention the worst feces to enter my ear hole is anything uttered by Charlie Gray and the ill-will he pays for on the Ticket. I hope we don't have to listen up until Aug 31st for this ill-conceived, banal, insulting promo for the product he's trying to sell.

God bless you P1's and the Plainsman.

  26. 6:39. Agree with your assessment. Also, has anybody else heard Bart Reagor's return as of late. The ole recycled poorly produced in a single take "I grew up as a Dallas Kid, a Dallas young adult etc...". Then names every relative and friend in N texas. This in turn provides me the comfort to "just give him a chance". Oh, the Tones Romes version are running again. You know the ones taped in an elevator shaft?! This is where he reminds us that he's never thrown big game touchdown passes...which I for one appreciate the clarity.

  27. Baseball Show of Record (2016) - "What a find Lucroy is . . . "

Baseball Show of Record (2017) - "We will rue the day . . . "

    Goofy season.

  28. I had one of those "hmmmm" moments today.

Tuned out of the Musers for one reason or another, and just forgot to tune back in.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @ PMan...completely agree. As I have mentioned before, if I'm not tuned in at 09:55, there's very little chance of me thinking to tune back in in the afternoon. I am as big of a Cowboys fan as the next guy but really there's not enough meat on those bones to carry these shows from 05:30 to 19:00, the Rangers aren't giving them much to discuss and there's only so much patience I have for listening about someone else's vacation experience.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 803: It is a goofy season, but everyone was jazzed by Lucroy when he came in. I remember an interview he did -- I think it may have been with the Hard Ones -- and he said all the right things, and then backed it up with both defense and offense. But for reasons difficult to know, he's fallen off this season, but he's hardly the only one. I can't fault Baseball Jesus for this one.

However, I would be interested in knowing what hardcore baseball fans think about Mike R's current baseball knowledge and judgment.

Speaking of which -- it seems like the Rangers are coming down on the George side of the George v. Everyone argument about the value to the franchise of Yu as a player on the roster (I'm sure they're talking up his trade value, a different thing).

If he tanked the other night just to stay in Texas -- seems unlikely but not impossible -- well, it's very sweet that he's so attached to the Rangers but that's also a reason you can't have him on the roster.

  31. I'm 40+, and now don't care about any MLB team where I live since I can't watch nine innings.

As for Oxnard, next week should be full with...
1- A likely Dodger Stadium trips to see LA/SF.
2- Bob possibly wanting to see UFC 214 and a "real" UFC audience to humble him.
3- Next week's Ventura County Fair talk with the concerts.
    https://www.venturacountyfair.org/fair/schedule/
    4- Canton, OH talk
    5- Road living and a Left/Uber story.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If, "In baseball," is used, I will punch out within 30 seconds. Mike's fastball talk held me to an additional minute, but if that's topic #1, I'm out immediately.

Ok, so which one of you made a certain fringe Ticket member make his tweets protected? Marshall's tweets are not public anymore. I would have to say this a new precedent for Ticket related people. There should be some consequence for this. P-Man shoulders some of the blame for always taking the high road on these kids.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Does anyone understand Anonymous In Plain Syght's post, and what taking the "high road on these kids" might have to do with anything?

This site's influence on matters Tickety is zero.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Speaking of Marshall, he said today that Justin may be back in a couple of weeks. It's concerning that he's been gone so long, but since they're still talking like he's coming back from whatever he's convalescing from, I'm going to assume that's his good faith belief and I hope it's true.

I thought we might hear from the lad, as he stops by here from time to time, and it was mildly concerning that we hadn't. Anyway, hope he's bouncing back from whatever has laid him low.

"There should be some consequence for this. P-Man shoulders some of the blame for always taking the high road on these kids."

I think you are taking all of this WAY too seriously. People with different opinions than yours are not enemies. You know that, right?

It's an f-ing radio station. It's an f-ing Twitter account. A wise man once said, "Let's move on to something more important, if, in fact, there is anything."

  38. Although we're all pulling for Justin to get back to 100 percent, I have rather enjoyed Eli filling in for Machine the last several weeks. He seems to have a little something, and I wish we got to hear more of him. Get well, Monty!

  42. I've got a topic, worthy of a whole story. I'm tired of Gordon doing "don't mark me" voice. I'm especially tired of him doing it when no one would mark him anyway. Saying the phrase "nipple clamps" in your own voice, for example, can't really be used against you in the way that "Seem impossible (semen possible)" can. But Gordon does that stupid voice a dozen times a day...which suggests to me something unflattering about him.

  45. I was looking forward to Mike's segment on the Summer of Love. Of course, what I got mostly was Corby's segment on the Summer of Love. With an assist from Dan Paul. I wish the guys would sit back and let Mike run with a subject like this, and contribute by asking Mike questions to keep him going.

Just seeing if anyone else felt that way ?

  51. Not that anyone would want to go to Ohio, but what was the value in sending the afternoon show there? I must confess I didn't listen to it all, but did I miss fun with wireless? What hall of famer did mike ax if he was doing it for ray?
