Brain-Freeze Quick Hits

     (1)    Is that song that's going on in the background of some recent promos -- kind an industrial drone with an ascending three-note figure, repeated without change, with a distant, distorted voice saying "sports" -- an actual song?  Or just a promo bed someone put together?  It's hypnotic.

     (2)    My brain also made tiny by this utterance on the latest Meador commercial issued by Charlie Gray:  "We're continuing our 50-year tradition of offering the lowest prices in our history."

Which I guess would mean continuously declining prices for 50 years.

     (3)    Gordon doing a hit-and-run reference to Duke Ellington this morning when imitating a Frenchman who has been sent out to grade the various Tour de France -- grades -- by category, who returns and reports that they are "beyond category," one of Ellington's favorite phrases.  (Says it several times.)

     (4)    Gordon/George bickering reaching punch-out proportions.   Bog; negative humor value; converts attractive persons into unattractive persons.

     (5)   Big Black Cowboys Computer -- fun bit, some yucks, but reduce airtime by about 47%.

  1. It appears there will be no webcam at training camp this year.

  2. The "sports" song you mention was brought to the morning musers a week or two ago by....Mr. Bass? It was done as a segment about the latest sports song. The band was cited, the whole song was played. It has more content than that - the seem to have pulled the chorus for the promo background. It mentions specific sports, also mentions smoking weed.

    And gughree - hypnotizing.

  3. The song:

The "beyond category" is an actual category in the Tour, not a Sir Duke reference:

  4. That is most interesting, surly. Learn a lot doing a blog with smart readers. It would surprise me if Gordon knew that reference, but sure, why not? Hell, maybe that's where Ellington got it.

  5. They laugh about that hors categorie every year when junes does his tour updates

  6. Man, the only things worse than Cowboys pressers are CJ Nitkowski and Sean Bass Rangers homerism.

  7. Oh good lord. Corby doesn't know that Deadwood is a real place?

  8. At least George is pushing back. Gordon can be a the world's most annoying little brother. George is finally dunking the kid's head in the toilet.

  9. Anon 5:07...if that's the only gripe about Corby, you're having a good day.

  10. Cannot agree, David Dodenhoff. George is taking the bait like he always does and just says "I didn't say that" or something equally useless. And the showgram screeches to a halt.

  11. Why does Corby feel the need to start everything these days with "For those of you that don't know"? I understand the Sam issue with Bob Lilly but since when has Corby become the historian on the station? If that has happened then history will certainly repeat itself. And by repeating itself that means me turning off the station.

  14. For those of you keeping score at home, the Hammer has not tweeted a tweet since July 9.

  15. I noticed that the other day. Has he gone AWOL like this before?

  16. Hey ellislives, I remember about 2 weeks after Greggo left, there was all this "wheres Greggo?" hubbub going on ,and frankly, still is. The condescending ass Corby, came on and said, "For those of you that don't know, Greg Williams was a guy that used to host this show" It was so condescending, like, nobody knew Greggo!! What a jerk!

  17. Hey Anon, "where's Greggo" is the reason this site exists. And, oh, hey Anon, there are A LOT of listeners who don't know who Greggo is. He's been gone for a decade; lots of new listeners since then. I know many listeners who laugh but scratch their heads when they hear a GW drop: they don't know who's saying it, much less its context. The only hub bub about GW at this point is from his circle of friends and a few D1P1s, other than that, it's done and dusted....has been for years now. We can rightly get on Corby for many things, this isn't one of them. So, tap the brakes, turbo.

  18. Yeah, I have heard Corby say that, and it makes me think: Wow, I've been listening to this station a long time. I frankly wish the hosts would fill in a little context MORE often -- some of their in-house references go back to a time before I ever heard of The Ticket.

This site wasn't actually born out of tghe "Where's Greggo" movement, although it did somewhat coincide with it. It arose out of me finding myself talking back to the car radio and then going looking for online Ticket fora and not finding any. But Greggo sightings definitely a big part of its early years.

  19. IMO, the reason Corby sounds condescending when he mentions Greggo is because every statement that Corby utters has an air of condescension to it.

Remember that Greggo had a couple of weeks of tweeting HSO's about Gordon and Corby that he then tried to take back. He may be in time out - either self imposed or otherwise.

  20. Looks like anon 1:47's comment sez "2 weeks after Greggo left". Pretty sure at that time, every listener knew who Greggo was.

  21. But s/he addressed current day Corby "condescending." Thereby implying the "where's Greggo" stuff still goes on.

  22. I was not by the channel when Corby used his new catch phrase with regards to the Hammer. I agree with the Plainsman that sometimes it does add color when a long time host provides some background. My issue is when he uses it with sport figures, bands, pop culture references. Based on Corby’s spotty reputation for presenting correct facts, I would rather him not preach to me. The whole scorched earth Greggo thing is inexplicable. I had to unfollow him on the Twitterverse however fake Greggo is one of my all-time favorites.

Along these lines, I remember last fall when the OGW was filling in on Cirque. Sirois was getting the opportunity to pick Mike’s brain about Ticket lore. It was great particularly when he breaks down the Hard Line open.

  23. Well, since I'm anon 1:47, I'll tell you what I meant. As a long time listener to the Ticket, I have always found Corby to be [at times] very condescending. At that time, Greggo had only been gone a short time and his absence was still a hot topic. ellislives comment made me think of the time that Corby came on and used the phrase "for those of you that don't know", explaining who the "Greg Williams" guy was. I found his tone to be very arrogant, and "condescending", and very dismissive of a person that was a huge part of Hardline success. As far as today's Hardline, I can take it or leave it.
