Look Deep Into Your Hearts

There comes a time in the life of every P1 and Confessor when he pauses, thinks:

that he must really be honest with himself,

no matter what he is saying to the outside world,

or in the comments he leaves on Reddit or My Ticket Confession,

or in the emails he sends to Jeff ("The New World Catman") Catlin,

or what he mutters under his breath when he's driving home from work;

and he asks himself:

Is The Hardline really as bad as I've been saying and thinking it is?

Corby and The Hardline get more grief from readers in these pages than do any other host/showgram.  Is it deserved?

I acknowledge the obvious:

The Hardline lads are very light on show preparation.  We can hear it, and we hear other Ticket notables acknowledge it on the air (Mike Sirois being a recent example).  Corby is a bit of a celeb-sniffer and has a strong attraction to the kickass lifestyle he is able to enjoy because of his local celebrity, and has a stylistic addiction to hyperbole.  Danny's cynicism can be wearing.    Each of them is at or near the bottom of apparent sports knowledge among all of the hosts.  (No?  The only evidence we have is what comes through the buds, sorry lads.)  The political leftism is just so unnecessary and trendy and contrary to the iconoclasm one would hope from a show called "The Hardline."

And the jewel in the crown of the show's issues:  Hall-of-Fame Mike too often becomes Checkout Mike.  This site has offered the thought many times that Mike, not Corby, is the author of the weaknesses of the Hardline.  He has -- yes, I think he still has, I don't think it's atrophied from disuse -- the authority to sharpen up that show, and to beat back the browbeating he takes way too often and at too-great length from Corby and Danny.  But he seems to have decided that, most of the time, it easier not to.

It's can be sad to hear, because I and many of you have observed that Corby is better, much better, away from the Hardline when he's had to step up his game, or when he's running a Hardline on his own.  When Mike is engaged or has a sportsy co-host during a Corby vacay, he can rise to the heights of the pre-Greggo-meltdown days.  Danny may be the wittiest off-the-cuff guy on the station.

So let me stake my position here:  I still love The Hardline. I almost never punch out.  I'm in for the sometimes genuinely hilarious stuff they get going.  Corby can be a very funny man -- I probably laugh out loud at him more than any other host on the station (Junior and Gordon in a tie for a close second).  Yes, I'd like much greater balance.  Yes, I'd like to feel like segments didn't get planned during the just-completed commercial break.  Yes, I'd like to hear Mike get up on his hind legs and sound like a real old grey wolf who has had enough.  But in the meantime, there's plenty to enjoy on The Hardline.  The ratings back me up -- still on top despite the repeated efforts of the competition to cull a compromised calf from the herd.  Corby is a frequent leader to those who correspond with Why Today Doesn't Suck.  It isn't just that there isn't any competitor worthy listening to -- on its merits, The Hardline is -- is still -- great radio.

I'm not going to tell anyone to stop listening if they loathe Corby, although that would seem to be a simple route to a better life if you really can't stand the guy.  You may be weary of this characterization, but I really think Corby is the Howard Cosell of The Ticket.  (Uh, do Confessors remember Howard Cosell?)  An annoying on-air presence, a weird voice, but a superior interviewer -- come on, guys, he's really good -- and somehow oddly compelling enough that you can't turn away.

Now, you don't have to stop criticizing Corby or Mike or Danny or the show as a whole on this site (with the usual cautions regarding vulgarity, anger, and ad hominem attacks on co-Confessors).

But I do want you to search your soul and consider whether, on balance, The Hardline really, really lets you down with regularity.

Speaking only for myself (who else?), it does not.   It's about as good as it's ever been, if not better.

I'm with you, Pdunce.  And that Mino is dreamy!

  1. Plainsman, you have said it well, but I could quibble with several of your supporting points. The only one I'll mention is that most of us don't complain that C & D express leftist views, but that they do so in such a way that if you see things differently, there's something wrong with you. Their leftist views aren't a problem; the superiority that accompanieds their views is. There's a difference.

But as to your main point, yes. I agree. When my kids aren't in the car, I'll listen to the Hardline over any other options. It's not even close. When I dare to venture to The Fan or ESPN, it becomes obvious how 2nd-string those stations are.

Last week, the JV was in the Hardline's slot, and i couldn't help but wonder if this is what listeners have to put up with in other markets all year long, while we only have to do so for a few weeks of Dry Dock each year. When seen in that light, the Hardline-bashers

  2. To finish that thought:

When seen in that light, the Hardline bashers are a bit over the top.

  3. Well, I guess I'm going to pick up over here! I was the guy that made the TMC joke on the other post. And where I disagree with James is, I actually enjoyed the Hardline fill in show last week. And I usually do when they're on vacation. Maybe I'm in the minority, but would like to see something else in that time slot. The Hardline has had a good run, now let's try something new.

  4. I didn't have much of a problem with the tone of the previous comments. It's what got me thinking about The Hardline, and I thought I'd kick off year 11 with something a little meatier.

Some of the fill-in shows are better than others. I always like me some Sirois, some Mino, some Montemayor, Kemp, Walker, Bass. Jury out on Welpton, a couple of Sams, Birmingham, but by and large I like giving some new guys a shot. They always try to make the most of their opportunities and it usually makes for better radio than even the experienced competition is throwing out. Guess these guys get The Ticket ethos and sound injected into them early on.

Either that, or Cat has a good year for Ticket talent. Probably some of both.

  5. I'll quibble with the comparison to Howard Cossell. Howard became somewhat a parody of himself, because his act was his act. But he showed up prepared.

  6. My point is that the Hardline is like the New England Patriots, their division (other stations shows) has been such a layup for so long that their show is top in the ratings and that they have to put little to no effort into it.

Add to that the strong lead-in from Bad radio and just being on 1310 they are so very lucky.

I think that if they had to really work at their show on a daily basis to get their ratings then Mike would retire and corby would be the student that is found to have stolen much of his material from others.

I am amazed that 105.3 does not move the G-Bag Nation to afternoon drive to compete. Ben and Skin just suck and no one can take Steve Dennis for very long.

I have found that I just turn off the Hardline and afternoon drive as they are not worth my time.

  7. I have gotten to where I punch out after Mike's mind I'm afraid. I can't say that the Hardline is bad but it has gotten to a point where I just don't enjoy listening to it most days. There is a aspect of Corby's rants about anything, even when I agree with him, that I just want to tell him to shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hey -- you're voting with your fingers. That's the best way to get the change you want. If you're gonna hit 'em at all, you either gotta hit 'em in the ratings, or hit 'em with sponsors.

If there were a vigorous feminist community in DFW, I think it would be interesting if some organization would call for a boycott of Hardline advertisers. I don't favor that, believe me, but there's enough evidence of misogyny in our lads' utterances that a campaign could cause the station and Cumulus some embarrassment. How long do you think Mary Berner would defend the lads if, say, Freeman Toyota pulled out?

    ReplyDelete
  9. KDF kinda sums up my opinion. At one time I thought I liked THL, even Corby. But then I started reading other peoples post, and started noticing Corby's annoying traits, and now I can't even tolerate him. His "know-it-all" stance on everything...does make you want to tell him to shut up!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Where was Corby yesterday? Is he and Surly out in Berkeley helping them cross the T's and dot the I's in this new name changing ordinance of all manholes and whatnot, to lessen the harshness for all this brain dead transgender bull$hit?

    ReplyDelete
  11. That's a good Ed Carter parody post. Well done.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lol! Well Surly, we'll have to agree, I'm more of a Ed Carter guy, and you're more of an Ed Hardy! Now...get back to your safe space ! Lol!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Corby wears on me at times to the point of punching out but I must ask: How many here can't stand him but think Gordon is a genius?
I don't listen to D&M mainly because Gordon poops on everything they do. Gordon Keith is a borderline genius but Gordo drives me bat sh-t crazy. (Much like Ted Nugent and Gonzo Uncle Ted)
The ManLove for Gordon in Ticket fandom is strong but am I the only one who feels this way?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Danny wittier than Sirois? Not on the best day he ever had.

As for Corby, he's good at his job. If you doubt that, think of some other Ticket personalities--I don't want to name names, but there are at least two obvious ones--who can't quite pull off the mix of sports, pop culture knowledge (especially music), self-referential humor, and funny banter that are the hallmarks of the station.

    ReplyDelete
  15. David, I'm not a Corby-basher, but I wince a little when you tout Corby's pop-culture knowledge. He gets a lot of things wrong. A whole lot of things wrong.

Gopher: I like Gordo and think he's quite intelligent and very funny. I also disagree with him about some important topics.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Like most autodidacts, contrarians, and
"gotcha-philes," Gordo falls prey to the spectres of confirmation bias and presuppositions thought by the autodidact not to exist.

    But yes,he's funny and intelligent.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The next few weeks is a punch out for me whenever they bring on a spare player or assistant coach. You could play the same interviews without the names from the last 10 years and you could not tell which is from which year. Such a waste of time.

Same airline talk, food talk, same karaoke talk, same bits......

I think that the station should spend the money instead on sending the crew to a tropical island and have a week or two of Survivor.

1310 enjoy your vacation, I get back to you in a few weeks.

    ReplyDelete

The other two sports stations will be doing pretty much the same thing. If you are still listening to sports oven some of the music stations, it's going to be hard to get away from player interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hopefully, the stations will not sink up their player interviews so that we can just flip back and forth. We can use the Garrett waste of time for bathroom breaks.

  20. Adios, Sam Madison. The kid had a weekend host gig, seemed to be doing Tickers at every turn, and even had a namesaked drop. Yet he still had to work other jobs. Keep on hookin' hooker and we'll see ya down the road.

    Stay hard, Sam!

  21. I've been the one urging people not to do so much Corby-bashing, but dang if he and Danny didn't display a lot of ignorance yesterday during E News. Corby, when discussing songs that have stayed at #1 on the Hot 100 for a long time, kept referring to "One Sweet Day" as a mushy romantic song, when even the most cursory listen will tell you it's about someone dying. Nothing lovey-dovey about it at all. And then Danny and Corby both confused the movie "The Hitcher" with the TV series "The Hitchhiker". Those movies had nothing to do with each other. In fact, the title character was the bad guy in one, and the protagonist in the other.

For a couple of guys who profess to be in touch with pop culture, they sure don't know much. And by the way, saying "I don't know" is fine. We cannot expect everyone to know every movie, TV show, or song that's out there. But pretending you do know, when you don't, is just hard for me to listen to.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Don't worry fellas, we all are just four weeks away from The Ticket talking College Football aka Junior and Corby only talking about items which (may) concern OU.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Corby's a brainless leftleaning fantasy boy. Of course he doesn't know what he's talking about!

  26. I'm one of those who punch out after WTDS. I can only take so much Corby and Danny "look how hip we are" chatter, and their condescending attitude to people with opposite political views. Fortunately, I have XM radio, because none of the other stations are worth a listen either.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am curious as to the podcasts you all listen to?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I enjoy It's Just Banter, both the free version and the premium (Patreon) one.

  29. Podcasts I listen to:

    99% Invisible
    Criminal
    Thinking Sideways
    The Mortified Podcast
    Every Little Thing
    Reply All
The Way I Heard It (With Mike Rowe)
    The Truth
    Twenty Thousand Hertz
A couple that are specific to the city I live in

I stopped listening to the evening show about 4 years ago. Between podcasts and the thousands of songs that I have, I'm pretty much covered for evening drive time entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If you are interested into deep-dives about 20th-century country music, the "Cocaine and Rhinestones" podcast is greatness.

I'm also a big fan of Mike Rowe's "That's the Way I Heard It" podcast.

  31. I know the Ticket has to go to training camp, because most listeners actually like the coverage, but I want it stated for the record that I think it's a beating. I do get caught up on podcasts and audio books during this time, though, so there's that.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Interesting take on THL. In general I agree with all the comments regarding peoples frustration with the members of the show. I also agree with the folks asking "Why are still listening"? I live on the east coast so I'm getting in my car when the Musers come on and walk out the office as WTDS wraps up. I will occasionally sneak back to Mike's Mind. I have a 45 min commute home which is perfect for a podcast. The list that DRW put together is good. Most of the stuff from Radiotopia is solid.

PS I did have my ears on as THL was talking the new Tarantino movie. Corby kept talking about how awesome the 35 MM version was. It's not being shown anywhere near the Metroplex or near me but there's also a 70 MM version which is supposed to be incredible.

  33. I highly recommend the podcast "The Weekly List" by Amy Siskind It is a podcast that chronicles the "not normal" actions of the Trump Regime as the country quickly descends into totalitarianism. The Weekly List chronicles these chaotic actions by Trump and the cascading effects of the breakdown in civility and the dysfunctional actions of the Regime. I remember fondly when there was some GOP opposition to Trump's chaotic nature but that is long gone as he has taken complete control and consolidated power not only over his party but also the DOJ which used to act in an independent manner. Very reminiscent of German circa 1923-25 period.

  34. Don't you love the Corby travel stores? I've got my popcorn, sitting on the edge of my seat in total anticipation! ...hmm..make sure phone is turned off, don't want to be disturbed.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Corby underestimated Steve Ballmer's wealth by an order of magnitude then proceeded to say he was NOT the Microsoft guy.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Another strike for Corby. He probably pissed off more than a few P-1 veterans trying to get a parking advantage by passing off Mike as a war hero.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I listened to that too. Corby said Rhyner wasn't snickering during the ruse. That's because it wasn't funny.

    ReplyDelete
  38. ATTN: 325 and the other political commenters.....STFU. No one wants to hear your bs. No one cares. Go away.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Does anyone know if there is a Webcam this year for training camp? I couldn't find one on theticket.com If so could someone please link the URL. Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  40. The war hero thing bothered me as well. I think by the letter of the law it could have been considered Stolen Valor. I know it was just a bit so it is probably not really on that level but I still found it uncomfortable. To be honest I feel the same about the the Norm & D Invasion as a show title. It feels to me right on the boarder of being in really bad taste.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Here he is.. the lib-beral..here's Corby!

  42. @ 11:57 - you didn't listen to 9:13 and keep the political commentary out. Of course you are likely a right winged snowflake with no tolerance for anything left of far right.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @10:03

The only show that I know of that is live streaming is Bob and Dan. Dan posts the link to the video everyday on his twitter.

It's probably become cost prohibitive to do it for the entire camp. Cumulus . . . the power of radio . . .

  45. Thanks for the podcast recommendations. I wasn't asking because I am anti training camp coverage. Just curious what you all listen to. I listen to some of the Ballzy Podcast once in a while. I have listened to most of the Levi Weaver/Emily Jones podcasts from The Athletic. I more of a baseball(atlanta) fan, than I am a sports fan.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I left that 1234 snarky comment up, because anyone who thinks "snowflakes" is a word invented to describe RIGHT-wingers is one taco short of a combo plate. Breaking my own "no ad hominem attacks on commenters" rule, but that was just too dumb to live.

    ReplyDelete
  47. As I drove to work this morning and listened to the 7:40 segment, I decided that one of the key components of the Ticket is the person(s) who keep and catalog the various segments and audio. Think about how much better the station is because you get to hear "Moron Dog" and "Do you like your gig?" years after they happened. They produce quality radio on a regular basis, but the quality of the station is reinforced by being able to listen to things like the training camp scooter races from years past.

  49. Thanks for the link, DA. Good to see you here again, old chum. Below is the pertinent part of the link DA kindly posted. Pretty interesting stuff. The Ticket still rules, but it's not quite the overall juggernaut it has been vis-a-vis the ENTIRE market (meaning, all stations/genres). If I were The FAN, I'd switch B&S and GBag. And if I'm Cat, I'm considering some new moves midday. Perhaps it's time to make Jake a full partner in BaD? Sirois a third re: The Invasion?

    DALLAS:

It was a strange quarter for both Sports Radio 1310/96.7 The Ticket and 105.3 The Fan. In weekday prime (M-F 6a-7p) The Ticket was 1st and The Fan was tied for 10th. For the full week (M-SU 6a-Mid) The Ticket was 1st and The Fan 14th. That’s the good news if you’re at The Ticket. Not so much if you’re at The Fan.

However, what makes this strange is that the winter book had the two brands ranked 1st and 3rd in the market, and last year during this same time period The Fan was ranked 4th. Looking deeper into the numbers, June was especially tough year to year for all of the Dallas sports stations. Among Men 25-54, The Ticket’s share was 44% lower, The Fan was down by 38% and ESPN 103.3 down 37.5%. Considering that the lineups haven’t changed, and both stations remain strong relevant brands, it appears a meter or two has created market challenges.

Meter challenges aside, The Ticket had more reason to celebrate thanks to a 1st place finish in mornings from The Musers, a 2nd place finish between the hours of 10a-3p with Norm and Donovan and BaD Radio, and a 1st place performance in afternoons from The Hardline.

For The Fan, their best results came in middays courtesy of GBag Nation. The show was ranked 7th for the quarter. The station’s drive time programs with Shan and RJ and Ben and Skin finished in the teens which hasn’t happened since we started following the market a few years ago.

One positive for The Fan, they defeated The Ticket in weekday prime (M-F 6a-7p) with Men 18-34. Those numbers though were also lower than usual.

A word of caution to industry folks looking at the market this quarter, tip your cap to Jeff Catlin and his team at The Ticket for their overall 1st and 2nd place finishes but don’t overreact to the results. Both of these stations have been rock solid brands consistently ranked in the Top 5 with much higher shares. With football season approaching, it’s just a matter of time til the meters return and we’ve got another strong battle between two great sports radio brands.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Good and interesting stuff. I do think within the next three years we'll see the day when The FAN pulls even and soon thereafter edges The Ticket in most if not all time slots. I say this both because of my own experience and the data from the article -- 18-34 year old men in toto listen to The FAN in greater numbers. To the former: I play beer league indoor soccer and lacrosse. When my younger demo teammates talk about something they heard on sports talk radio or bandy about a some sort of inside lingo that's obviously not of their own invention, it always pertains to The FAN, and never The Ticket. To the latter, please see the aforementioned data.

  51. Time to make It's Just Banter a midday show replacing Norm when he retires soon. Move Donny back to BaD radio and the ticket will be set. Sirois with IJB would be good from 10 to noon.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 838, I won't comment on whether It's Just Banter (Jake + T.C.) adding Sirois would be a ratings hit. However, I think I can predict with some confidence that it would give the world its first on-air intentional manslaughter.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 838 obviously is unaware that TC and Sirois aren't exactly buddies.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I’m still a hardline P1 but as you said the lack of show preparation is really noticeable. When Corby does entertainment news and I know more about the story from scanning headlines than he does it’s a problem. It seems like a simple problem to solve. Hire an intern who finds stories, writes 5-7 sentences summarizing it, bullet point all the facts and deliver to Corby everyday at 3.

    ReplyDelete
  55. BaD surely has some bullpen interns who could help out.

  58. @Anonymous August 1, 2019 at 6:48 PM:

Thanks for the shout out. But to be fair, I look at Barrett's website weekly and see his thoughts on the realm about once a week, however, his podcasts are now lacking. Recall, I once posted his podcast with Bruce Gilbert where Bruce openly gave out his phone number. Barrett also has had a greater perspective on the numbers than Barry Horn.

FYI, Cumulus has recently made cuts to long-time hosts in other cities, specifically San Francisco. KNBR recently "retired" their 10-Noon host, Gary Radnich (age 69) and Bob Fitzgerald, left his Noon-3PM show, but still has his job as TV PBP voice for the Warriors. Greg Papa came into the Cumulus/KNBR fold because he replaced Ted Robinson as the 49ers PBP voice and took over the Noon-3 slot.

Fella and gals, I gotta bolt, but I should have more time in the next week. Generally, I've stopped listening to B@D Radio as we diverge from TV talk and other media now. I try to hear Mike's Mind and his preview but if the rundown does not intrigue me, I'm often out.

    ReplyDelete
  59. DA, welcome back. You've been away too long!

    ReplyDelete
  60. The hardline is my third favorite show on the ticket but I never punch out. A little more prep would be nice sometimes, agree.
But people who worry about the political opinions of the hosts are failing, Very sad. Many people say so. Ragonk.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't think you understand the tern "worry" means. No one is worried about THL's political opinions. It's that no one is interested in them. And therefore they find said (and oft offered) opinions annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I’ve evolved to where The HD is not must-listen radio. Still very good, but their sports opinions are rarely interesting, thought-provoking, well-researched or original. Their other programming, entertainment and local news are better. Corby has the mic a little much but he is brilliant, a genius interviewer, and I’m jealous of the great life he has put together, so kudos for him! BAD radio is really good quality, and Jake and Julie are excellent contributors. I’m always by the channel there and thank goodness for the App. Just make the Meador auto guy go away please!
