A Challenging Time for The Ticket

What are these guys going to talk about with no games?

The NBA season suspended, and other individual tournaments and games are either cancelled or in danger of cancellation.  MLB?  NHL?

And its inevitable that someone at Cumulus Dallas will test positive.  A host?  Think about those shared microphones and boards, and the close quarters in the studios.

Because The Ticket doesn't focus exclusively on sports, it will probably be in better shape, host-preparedness-wise, than its sportsier competitors.

I hope all Confessors stay safe, exercise appropriate cautions, get medical care when things look iffy.

  1. They didn't talk sports after 9/11. In fact, it was their finest hour.

  2. Good point. I didn't get to Dallas until 2004, so I missed it but I've heard lots of praise for their handling of the broadcasts at that time.

So perhaps it's really an opportunity for the station to serve as the same "coming together" point it was at that time. Thanks, 820.

  3. They could talk more about obscure sports on TV such as squash, lumberjack competitions, and electrician races.

They can still talk college/profootball and NFL Draft. They will be fine, especially when NFL free agency is next week.

  6. I heard a fair amount of 12-3 today. I thought Dan and Jake were excellent, solid content, appropriate tone.

  7. As someone who hates incessant talk of the NFL draft, I'm afraid this will lead to even more time spent doing uber-deep draft analysis. I see a lot of podcast time in my drive-time future. Love the photo!

  8. The Ticket is more equipped for this than The Fan is.

  10. You can only talk about the effects of COVID 19 and the cancellations/postponements so long. I guess you'll get a lot of free agency and draft talk pretty soon. Outside of that, I foresee a lot of boring interviews with various coaches, GMS, and owners about the repercussions of all this. Yawn.

  11. 2 segments with Mark Followell. What an absolute beating. Their is not a more pretentious and self important person in the media.

  12. Ginger or Mary Anne?

You're on the two minute drill, go!

  13. Followell's reply to being asked if he was intrigued in any way to call a game with no fans, and his reply is no, because his thoughts would be with the people who weren't getting paid. Jesus Christ, lighten up just a little bit maybe. He's so fake now, not even worth a listen.

  14. More ratings news from Richie Whitt: https://www.si.com/nfl/cowboys/news/whitts-end-new-dfw-radio-ratings-cowboys-coronavirus-plans-no-stick-to-sports-right-now

Summary: The Ticket is still behind in Men 25-54 in January.

Remember, you can argue all you want about how ratings are not "real". But the people who actually pay money to The Ticket for spots know they are real.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Except for the fact that when RW was going against THL and was getting his ass handed to him in the ratings would constantly claim that ratings weren't the real measure of success: the amount of and the type of advertisers (the size, amount paid, and visibility of the advertisers) is what counts. Now he implies a different narrative. Go figure.

Why do you think Followill is fake, Rhino and the other Anon? How do you know this? What evidence other than a couple of HL segments do you base this on? Personally I think you are both being uncharitable.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Followell is a mouthpiece for the Mavs. No player, coach, owner has ever done anything wrong/questionable, everything is fine, if the record is bad there's a dozen excuses on the ready. It's so transparent he has shed all personality.

    ReplyDelete
  17. You have selective hearing, Rhino. You also sound like you have an agenda / axe to grind.

I've heard Followill criticize every facet of the game/Mavs org. He might not always be explicit, but he's not a toady.

Do you call your employer out to his/her face? I bet not. Why would Followill? An overt criticism on air would be tantamount to just that.

  18. Man, I am sooo sick of hearing about this damn bologavirus! Be it the "#metoo", the "statues" the "anthrax", or "gas prices" bullshit...this is the biggest, most embarrassing kneejerk of ALL kneejerks!!!! The casualties from the economic fallout are going to far, far, far outweigh the actual virus! I have a scientist friend that specializes in cancer research says this is nothing more than a newer strand of flu virus with somewhat different components. There is no need for all this hype! And listening to that idiot "chicken little" Corby drone on how the world is coming to an end...what an idiot!

    1. I’m glad you have a friend in a somewhat parallel field but the people who actually work for like the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic and they are the actual experts, so maybe they know slightly more about it than your friend...

  19. My only axe to grind is that he's another dead-air guest that leads me to change the channel. The mental gymnastics he plays to paint everything in a positive Mavs light is stomach-churning and transparent. You're his mom or something, and that's cool, but he offers nothing. I don't expect him to be critical of the Mavs...but maybe The Ticket should keep that in mind when wanting to have MEANINGFUL Mavs talk.

  20. I dunno @ slinky. I tend to think there is a good bit of overreaction going on here as well and it's causing a major shit storm in the economy, the sports world, at grocery stores, etc (in Jerry Seinfeld voice: "so what's the deal with toilet paper?").

The fact is, we just don't know that much about this COVID 19 right now - the effects, the duration, anything really. I do tend to agree that I'm sick of fucking hearing about it, but it's THE hot story right now and it's not going away anytime soon. As far as another strand of flu? Possibly, but it's a strand that nobody has any immunity to. I don't think it's end times, but precautions must be taken even if we don't like the results.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "You're his mom.." Rhino, that's just sad. You're making terrible points, keep adjusting your argument because you know it's silly, and are making an ass out of yourself every step of the way.

  23. Much like sports talk, this offers the hosts a full platform to do what they're best at: speculation.

That's what sports talk is at its core. Speculation and historical analysis. What makes it grand is lightning-in-a-bottle personality. Generally, the ticket has that in spades and it translates across all subjects. Some can handle it more delicately than others, but that is why the ticket shined during 9/11. The approached a subject they knew nothing about, just as their listenership didn't, and sussed it all out in real time.

I don't tune in to 1310 for expert analysis of, really, anything. I tune in for the people.

Which is why my ears listen no matter the news of the day. Radio friends they remain. Generally highly entertaining ones.

  25. I was listening to WiP this morning and they did as good a job as they could to keep the show interesting with, essentially, nothing to talk about. Anyway, one thing I believe Mino mentioned was as of tomorrow he said that only the "production staff" would be the studio. So we're to assume, the board operator, a producer, and maybe the Ticker guy/girl? Are the hosts going to be doing the show from their homes (like Norm has done in the past) or some other remote location? . That seems like it would make for very awkward radio. Maybe I misunderstood, though. We'll see.

  26. Some advice for you slinky:

It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. On the whole, I usually find Surly to be, well, surly. On this point, however, we agree. Slinky, you're a good Confessor. But man do you sometimes go off the deep end with your, how shall I put this in friendly terms, creative connections between events, peoples, and purviews. In the final analysis your friend might be correct--though I doubt it. Look around you; look around the world. Disease has no agenda. And I think you are about to see that this (perhaps existential) challenge is about to get even more serious before things begin to quell. Don't be a fool, slinky. You and everyone else out there in the MTC circle be careful and follow CDC safety guidelines. Social distancing.

  28. Hold on to your butts. New 12-3 producer announced today. Not someone you will expect.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Obviously, I misunderstood Mino on WiP yesterday. The Musers are in studio and broadcasting. Pretty informative on COVID 19, but, otherwise, struggling a bit with topics outside of that.

New 12-3 producer? Julie? Line 4 Guy? Dameris would work.

  32. At the risk of getting back on topic, and perhaps bringing this thread to an end, I think that D&M will not be hurting for content. As we all know, Gordon doesn’t talk much about sports. Take a look at the Musers Schedule:

    Mon-Fri @ 6:15am — Gordo's O-Deck
    Mon-Fri @ 7:10am — Muse in the News (featuring Gordon Keith )
    Mon-Fri @ 8:40am — 8:40 Bit
    Mon-Fri @ 9:10am — Gordo's Corner
Tuesdays @ 8:50am — Biggest Show Coming to Town
    Fridays @ 7:30am — Scatter Shooting
Fridays @ 7:50am — Emergency Brake of the Week

4 Gordon segments and 3 non-sports segments already built into the schedule. Plus there is plenty of COVID-19 news to cover.
I’m not as familiar with the other show’s segments, but I’m confident the morning show won’t suffer a drop in quality due to the lack of sports.

But I wanted to ask him how many rolls of tissue he probably he rushed out and bought! Seriously people, unprecedented knee-jerkage going on!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Unprecedented reaction as the virus is unprecedented.

As of midnight tonight, all restaurants and bars in Dallas are closed until further notice. It seems pretty serious to me. Things will not be back to normal for some time. It sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes Euronymous, very serious. Let's see the massive hysteria that's going to happen after two, even one, week of no jobs...the robberies, murders, you name it. We have the biggest bunch of dumbasses running this city! Our society has become mindless lemmings, fueled by paranoia and political correctness!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Can't believe I'm saying this but I side with Slinky. I think what the Mayor and city of Dallas has done will only escalate the panic.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I can see it. Like today, I could not find a simple loaf of bread anywhere! I went into Winco, could not believe the amount of people with absolutely over flowing carts, and the check out lines were crazy! Drove as far as Buckee's in Terrell, no bread; stopped at several convenience stores, nothing! This is nothing but sheer panic. there are infants and elderly that cannot get necessary [possibly life sustaining] items due to the chaos. Are there going to be people infected, yes, hundreds or thousands, but the vast majority will simply recover, and this will run it's course in a couple of months. But there will be millions of people drastically affected by the economy, and I mean drastically! The desperation will cause a huge spike in crime, not to mention suicides. Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but stripping people of job security is not the answer. The message should be sent to continue with all precautions (washing hands, limit as many social events and self quarantine if needed. But this sending out message that "hey, you may not have a job for months" is irresponsible. Slinky is right.

  38. Men and women, these are important issues, but I want you to come here to talk Ticket-related topics. So let's cool it with the virus talk, except to the extent that it has to do with The Ticket. I understand this can unavoidably connect up with virus talk because that's what the hosts are talking about, but keep comments Ticket-centric if possible. A squillion other places you can sound off about this.

Will try to have a new topic up shortly.

  41. They ought to call it the biggest show that would've come to town if they were still coming to town. A nod to Jr's old girl on tv segment. Huh, who did he just marry????

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Anon 2:30 PM:

He married https://www.fox4news.com/person/s/natalie-solis in November maybe?

  43. One pleasant note; I've noticed considerably less Corby bashing since the shuffling.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @KDF: Those guys are HORRIBLE. Sean (sp?) and Marcus are the WORST! They can't even make a decent spot. They talk over each other and are generally obnoxious. The jingle makes me want to stick sharpened objects into my ears. On that note, have you noticed the trash bags commercial? : STINKY STINKY STINKY! PRICY PRICY PRICY! Holy crap.

That said, how much do you think The Ticket's advertising revenue and/or sales has suffered from this? If I wanted to advertise my business on there (which I've been thinking about) I sure has HELL wouldn't do it now. I have to think their ad $ for spots is really hurting due to what's going on right now in the sports world.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Has anyone other than me noticed this verbal tick phrase that many of the hosts say as a preface to a profound statement they are about to make:

    "But I will say this"

If I had 10 dollars for every time they say that when stating there position on an issue I would be as rich as Gordo.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Euronymous:
If you are hearing those spots on other stations across the dial you can bet they are from an ad agency and not Ticket in house production.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @ Gopher - I'm sure almost none of the ads the The Ticket runs are in house productions unless it's for the station itself. I know the other spots are created by ad agencies and run on other stations.

  52. I'm listening to bogus Hardline doing their part to escalate the fear. They're talking about the 60 yr old that recently died that had the virus but had absolutely no symptoms. My question is, how do they know it was the virus he died from. It could have been heart related; it could have been high blood pressure from all this scare! I just stopped at a convenience store to refill my 32 oz drink. I was told I had to use a new cup for fear of spreading the virus. I just didn't want to waste a cup but I obliged. I told counter person to watch me, and explained "ok, tell me how this is any different from what I was going to do." I slid the cup from the stack, simply touched ice release (only using the cup) then soda button (only using cup) but now, I've touched new cups, as well as new lids and straws. So I asked her, "now, explain how that was safer than what I was going to do?" Of course she realized my point. I said that I know it's not her fault and wasn't trying to give her a hard time, and pretty much joked it off with her. Sometimes I fill the need to recapture a little bit of commonsense, which we are rapidly losing!

  54. Junes emphatically said that every show on the Ticket beat every other show on every other Dallas sports station in the ratings (when ciombining OTA with Stream). And that the Musers were the number 1 rated show regardless of format in M25-54

    ReplyDelete
  55. lack of access to the entire ratings has generally been the flaw (purposeful or otherwise) in any "reporting" radio ratings. KTCK is an oddity because not only are ratings spread across a pair of frequencies, it is also considered as one of the most-streamed stations in the world. Additionally, you don't "just add the numbers together". There is math that has to be calculated to get an accurate result, per Nielsen.

    ReplyDelete
  56. When they sell time, what numbers do they use to calculate CPM? Is CPM still a viable factor in the age of streaming?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sounds like The Ticket show hosts will be broadcasting from their homes after today. They announced this early this morning. It's not definite, but apparently they're having a meeting with Catlin today about it. That should be interesting and weird. The technology is in place, but not having the hosts in the same room with the producer, board op, and ticker guy/girl should make for some awkward radio for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Is there anyway we can put a banned on stupidly? Listening to these three idiots talking on the Hardline. Dumbness Danny is beaming about this Austin company with virus testing kits. Big f-ing deal!! You can take the damn $139,00 test and be clean, and still get it days later. Have we lost our freaking minds?!! No more groups of more than 10 people? What about the city busses -"sorry bro...can't get on! Already got 10 people!" Lmfao! And this 6ft distance thing is so absurd ..th..that there is no words!

    ReplyDelete
  59. ...another thing, where was all this paranoia after aids came out? Don't remember any shutting down of porno book stores or gay bathhouse! There is still no cure for the aids virus. Yeah, there's drugs that help, but once you have it, you have it for good. Have you seen how the truckers are being treated (You know, the guys bringing food and medicines)...being refused restrooms and food. Let's see an eighteen wheeler going through a drive-thru! Did you see where food donations are down to homeless shelters by 80% because of the insane rush on grocery stores? (Grocery stores supply the largest percentage of donations, oh, and get ready for an influx on homeless) The president is going to have to step up in about a week and mandate that businesses reopen, proceed with caution, but we have to get things back on track, or we're never going to recover. Now, if the government is ready to send out a couple of checks per month to families...then..

    ReplyDelete
  60. I don't understand this testing thing unless you're going to completely isolate the haves and have nots. You make a decent point on the aids thing. There are probably hundreds of thousands with aids virus that is still spreading. And yes, there are drugs, but people are still dying. I lost a friend two years ago.

Hope to have a new post up later today.

But I will miss Nurse Ginger. May invite her back for a return engagement.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Isn't that what they're talking about on the ticket? Even if you put something new, which is welcomed, it's still going to be a topical subject.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think posting about The Ticket's coverage of COVID 19 is fair, but long rants about this or that are not pertinent. The "topical subject" should stem from @The Plainsman's post, not devolve into frustration/disbelief/anger about the current situation. If a host says something that you find implausible, say so, but leave it at that. There are other things to discuss relevant to the station right now. For instance, I commented they might be broadcasting from their own homes soon or Blake as the new producer from 12-3. That kind of thing. It can be done, but it takes some discipline.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Fair enough Euro! My frustration stems from the host basically promoting this insanity. Like yesterday, they were saying that we should follow California and New York and shut down everything. No restaurant take-out/deliveries...everything! How would that work; you think there is a crazy food mart rush now?!...let that happen!
@ East Texas...lol, I thought you were going to say "Pull your head out" I saw the Sonic thing too, but how realistic is that? Think about it, most Sonics, infact, all Sonics, don't have the parking or space to accommodate a bunch of 18 wheelers. Nor do theyhave (at this time) man power to be walking out to service: not to mention maybe getting tired of Cheesy-tots and pink lemonade. But something is better than nothing, and it's a good gesture.
But the killer yesterday, was Danny all excited about this stupid test out of Austin! Let's see...how's this.."Hey, I just lost my job and can't pay bills, but here's $139.00 for this test where I can shove this swab up my nose!" Sorry Plains, I'll knock it off...but Euronyous, where are these sites I can vent? Trust me, you guys are getting the G-rated stuff!
