  1. In her ads for Carnivore Trading, Julie Dobbs reads copy that scoffs at 7% annual return on equity investments, and doesn't quite promise, but strongly implies that subscribing to the CT service will result in gigantic, pretty-much unheard-of returns of up to 100% annually.

I was going to write more about this, but the Reddit/Ticket thread on this is pretty illuminating: https://www.reddit.com/r/theticket/comments/ncga80/carnivore_trading/

I've done a little internet research on this, and here's the impression I'm getting: (1) CT is a real group of humans who are doing what they claim to be doing. They're not throwing darts -- it's real research and due diligence. (2) The monthly subscription is expensive. I've seen varying reports on the monthly subscription fee, but it's at least $100 a month. I think one of the Redditors reports that he paid $175/month. (3) To be successful, you have to be willing to sink a very substantial amount of money into the project and (4) be prepared to act on the recommendations, both of which will tend to permit gains to overtake the inevitable losses, and which means a lot of very active trading, which is on you. CT does not place orders or clear trades; you're responsible for that, which means, on top of your subscription fee paid to CT, you will have transaction costs coming out of your pocket, whether your trades are good or bad. And, of course, as the ad says, (5) past performance is not a promise of future results. (6) There is a whiff of pump-and-dump with the pattern of recommendations. (7) There's a reason these stock pickers want to be anonymous.

Study after study after study has shown that stock picking is a fool's errand in the long run. Flashy returns are frequently available over short periods with the right picks, but as time goes by, you can't beat the market. A couple of good resources on this is John Bogle's "The Little Red Book of Common Sense Investing" and the career of Warren Buffett.

CT is not listed among the nine best stock picking services of 2021 by MoneyCrashers: https://www.moneycrashers.com/best-stock-picking-services/

Or the seven best by DayTradingz: https://daytradingz.com/best-stock-picking-services/

In fact, other than the CT website itself, and one suspiciously enthusiastic item on PJ Media (https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/bryan-preston/2021/05/17/theres-a-new-beast-on-wall-street-carnivore-n1447626), I found very little about this supposedly miraculous return-producing machine online. (PJ Media is a right-wing site that tends to go all-in on anti-establishment stuff like Carnivore claims to be. The article looks "placed" to me.) In fact, The Ticket Reddit site has some of the more informative posts from actual investors not appearing on the CT site.

Anyway, I want to stop short of claiming that this is a scam. So Julie is unlikely to be criminally indicted for violation of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (Section 10(b)). I'm doubtful CT is suitable for anyone except the very most active and already-well-off day traders.

I wish all Confessors luck with their 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage accounts, and walkin'-around money.

  2. Well, you're talking about someone who also pitched for Griddy. I don't think she's too concerned about the racket those who throw some spokes-bones her way *ahem* trade in. The extra pocket money and (more importantly) the bit of cache/notch on the CV seem to be what drives Mrs. Dobbs here. In fairness, this can be applied to many if not most Cumulus (and otherwise) pitchpersons.

  3. Holy shades of Vita Fit and Body Shaper Batman.
Reddit has a hard time understand that sales will advertise almost anything or anybody if the check clears the bank. Their two current whipping boys are the Crazy Gun Deal and the Meddors Auto Group.

  4. Why pay when you can just hop on wallstreetbets and ride whatever meme stock is being hyped and ride the gravy train to huge gains (or losses) with gamestop, amc, blackberry, etc. The stock market is a meme now.

    This is not financial advice.

  5. Hi, 1006. If you have any familiarity with the commodities market, then you know that the market is and has always been a "meme." This is nothing new. Setting that aside, what exactly to you think Amazon or Tesla are? Did you know that Tesla has never--I repeat--never even come close to making a profit? And until very recently, neither did Amazon. Amazon was (Tesla still is) a "meme," propped up, wholly, by both the US government and Wall Street.

  6. Not to turn this into a stock argument board, but Tesla has turned a profit for more than a year now. I believe the last seven quarters have been profitable for them. Without four straight profitable quarters they would not have been eligible to be included in the S&P 500 (they were announced in Nov and officially added in Dec 2020).

  7. Yes and no, 1021. They technically did, which allowed for the inclusion in the S&P 500. They have never come anywhere close to making a profit selling autos. And that was my point. But thank you for pointing that out; I should have been clear.

  8. The great Peter Welpton posted up ratings from Feb - May on the reddit site. Damn. Straight across the board, all demo groups, all shows, The Ticket spanked The FAN. There was a month for both NaD and THZ where The FAN closed the gap, but that month was preceded and followed by an ass kicking of the highest order.

So much for competition. ANYONE who's of mind that Cat needs to change or fix this, that, or the other needs to rethink their position. The juggernaut keeps on keepin' on, even if the quality isn't what it used to be (real or perceived by some). When your nearest competitor is THAT bad at what they do, you can get away with anything. Truth be told, they really aren't getting away with anything. I think the shows are rather solid.

  9. For informational purposes only, just to show how the sports talkers stack up against the rest of the D/FW market.

  10. Nice comment, 813. Agree with everything you say.

Of course, not everyone likes all of the hosts, but the station is so far superior to its competition that it's barely in the same category with them.

And, not to damn with faint praise, the station is solid on its own merits. I'm on record as opining that both 12-3 and 3-7 are much stronger since the big changes. Even though they haven't changed much in, oh, a couple of decades, the Musers are still top-drawer and the transition taking place 10-12 is being handled beautifully.

  11. Yeah, and that is happening during the 10-12 hours, isn't it (?). Even when Norm is there, he's not always *there*. I hate to say it, but he's fast becoming (and respectfully being treated as such) a figurehead of sorts, more so than actual host. I do think it's building to a denouement. That sooner rather than later a permanent change will occur and Norm will become a frequent emeritus guest across the board (a la Mike, but perhaps with greater frequency) and perhaps continue to do the NFL draft for as long as he can--perhaps ditto Norm-a-thon, again, as long as he can.

My question is what comes next. Everyone assumes it's Donnie and Sirois. I'm not so sure. Seems like that's the way things are heading, but there's a little voice inside telling me "left turn ahead."

  12. I've listened to a fair amount of 10-12 lately, and Norm still has some fairly meaty segments. Some days he sounds strong, other days a little croaky. They say he's on the mend, and let's hope so.

Personally -- I'd be good with Boom in the House. I like both Donovan and Mike S.

Declaration of Interest: As you all may recall, Mike S invited me to the Alamo Drafthouse Ticket-sponsored showing of "The Meg" because I had this gigantic actual fossil megalodon tooth, which I brought with me to display to meg fans. He tweeted out an image of me in a comfortable summerweight suit. As close as I've ever come to being identified, but it was cool. A lot of fun meeting the Sirois crew and pals.

  13. RIP, Cray Trey. You contributed and will be missed. Stay hard, pal!

  14. I heard them talking to Trey yesterday. He said he got a better-paying job. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was not too dissimilar to what he's doing now, although I don't believe it's in radio.

Yeah, I always liked Trey and he would check in here from time to time.

Hey, Trey, keep in touch, eh? Drop your old pal Plansie a note if you hear something's up.

    And best of luck.

  15. This saga of the Mavs front office is fascinating. Cuban calls the story total BS (that's a quote) and then Donnie leaves a few days later. Cubes' is either lying through his teeth or he's woefully out of touch with the situation.

  16. Will have a new article and red up later today, hour or so. Listening more, will try to keep the site a little fresher.
