  1. I'm not a Dumb Zone subscriber, but I thought I'd check in on how subscribers it has. I haven't kept track over time, but it would seem to be hanging in there with 6500+.

I was struck with its tag line:

Dallas based sports and "comedy" podcast

"Dallas based" should be hyphenated, but I'm not here to nitpick that.

My puzzlement is over putting "comedy" in quotation marks. This would suggest to most third-party readers that the Dumb Zone, or whoever composed that tag line, believes the podcast intends to present itself in that way, or believes it is comedy, but is not, in fact comedic.

However you interpret those quotation marks, putting "comedy" in quotes calls the show's characterization as comedy into question.

Maybe it's the same person who composed "We say what we want."

    1. It’s a bit. It’s always a hit. So curious the hot takes in this forum from folks who don’t actually listen to the DZ.

Yeah their sub numbers have stalled. But their ad revenue continues to go up. On the Mom game pod Jake said he’s back to making at least as much as he made at the ticket, with the added benefit of being his own boss.

DZ is creating organic bits and catch phrases the way the ticket used to in the early days.

DZ is now the main thing I listen to with the ticket a distant second. Ticket sounds stale and tired. No new bits. No new segments. Occasional flashes of greatness.

This sub loves to wish for the DZ demise for some odd reason. It’s not binary. Both can and do exist in harmony.

  2. PM:
The placement of quotation marks around “comedy” is likely a reference to one of the very first episodes. If memory serves, Dan was taking Blake to task for not putting the show in the comedy section of Patreon. I’m sure another commenter might be more specific.

    1. If true, that alone is problematic in both the smaller and bigger pictures. A self-created encapsulated existence is delusional. Their numbers peaked at roughly the 8 month mark of their endeavor. This is not merely trending in the wrong direction. This is on an inevitable collision course with failure.

    3. The Sweet Spot

I've been quiet too long. That intro song sucks balls. But I caught the intro Friday and it was soooo spare.

They were talking about f-ups in live spots and Mino was getting into how you have nightmares about such things, and it was going pretty well. Then the Sea Bass pulls an about face and starts talking about his adventures in training camp. Something about disc golf maybe, not quite sure, then just how great Santa Barbara is and he drove somewhere there for something.

Not really sure, he totally lost me. He just threw his wet blanket over the fire Mino was trying to stoke. Just more evidence that the Sea Bass opens up his bag every weekday and finds absolutely nothing.

Watching people engage in what amounts the some strange cyber act of self gratification to get their rocks off a not entertaining for those of us who aren’t either trolls or zealots.

    1. I first heard of him when he was the producer for Ron Engleman at KGBS 1190 in Dallas in the early 90s. Engleman was prominate in the radio broadcasting of the coverage of the Branch Dividian Standoff in Waco in 1993. Engleman was into The Illuminati, black helicopters, and gold fringed flags. IYKYK.
He was the producer for The Hard Line during the early years and I remember numerous segments about the metal shows he had attended. He did several night time music shows like most of the hosts have done at various times over the years. If you do a Google search for his name it will pull up lots of industry publications and stories most here havent heard.
Reading some of that stuff he has had more of an effect on the station than most know.

You will still hear it on occasion and Bob throws it out from time time still. If any of the Ticket folks are reading they might be able to give the origin of the drop. Maybe it’s a question to throw Mino’s way.

  20. A few thoughts on the reddit/Cat kerfuffle.

    1. If true, Cat is an absolute nut job. If true, I have to wonder if at the very least he is reprimanded by Cumulus -- at worst, terminated.

    2. My gut tells me it isn't true. It makes zero sense for Cat to engage in such behavior. However, people do whacky shit. Kevin Durant, one of the best, most successful basketball players in the history of the game has been caught multiple times using burner accounts to battle nobody, randos who deigned to criticize him. Makes zero sense, but there he is doing it. So I'll never say "never."

    3. If I missed it, someone please tell me otherwise and point out where I might find the hard evidence that it is Cat. What I read merely asserted it was. Assertions made by someone with a handle who evidently runs Ticket reddit in some capacity that are based on assertions by mods. I'm not saying they're untrue, but I read/saw nothing that supported these claims.

    4. If I'm the individuals making these very public and frankly very damning claims that call into question Cat's personal and professional reputations. I would post up the hard supporting evidence ASAP. As in yesterday. Else, you might have some serious legal issues coming your way, hard and fast and for real. Anonymity only goes so far. Highly doubt reddit's parent company, Advance Publications, is going to want to deal with such a thing, much less protect a few dudes running a subreddit focused on a sports talk radio station in Dallas. Maybe I'm wrong. But at least it's food for thought.

    5. But why would anyone make up such an outlandish story? Like Cat doing such a thing, it makes zero sense. Also. like Kevin Durant and his burner accounts, it makes zero sense, and yet he does it.

The whole thing, whatever the truth may be, is off the charts bonkers.

    1. 1. If it wasn’t Cat then who would be added with zero Reddit history and their first actions be removing Grubes and Jake from the directory? And then search out a KT comment that wasn’t negative towards the station and delete that? KT has been gone for 13 years but the person seeked him out immediately.
      2. TC said he’s been reached out to by former coworkers that he hadn’t talked to in a long time which means the ticket staff is talking and concerned about it.
      3. The mod that gave access to the supposed Cat account deleted his entire Reddit profile so no one can contact that person to verify any of that.
All said it’s circumstantial but there’s smoke of someone from the station having a hand in it.

      Delete
    2. It’s 100% legit. The person who gave up their mod credentials on r/theticket posted a snapshot of the message they sent to the remaining mod (who apparently hadn’t been around in years) over on a Discord server. Discord is a social application that is much easier to use than a freaking Blogspot comment section from 2006 when it comes to having a conversation. 😂 But, I digress.

The message from the old mod specifically said the new mod accounts they added were for Cat and station interns. The old mod deleted their Reddit account because of the shit they had already been taking from sub members for years. Hence their reason for giving up their mod credentials. They (old mod) had been trying for a while to pass the baton to a non-Ticket individual but had no takers.

  23. I was at the last 2 Catlin AMAs. In both he was asked about social sites like Reddit, and both times he said he doesn’t follow it, it’s too negative and doesn’t correlate to the reality they see (ratings), but that he does have a few people who occasionally update him.
I personally find it hard to believe that a Marconi winning PD is going to bother to with a Reddit sub forum. The Ticket was atop the ratings last month (again) and is the top billing station in the market. The Reddit hot take that the station sucks, it’s failing, etc, just doesn’t correspond to objective reality, ratings and revenue.
And the current Reddit state of mind, “they’re going to need to fire Cat over this” is ludicrous. He’s the PD of the most successful station of all cumulus stations. He’s not getting fired over a reddit rumor.

  25. I haven’t had email conversations with him, but I’ll tell you this- the ones I see recapped on Reddit almost all fall into the category I mentioned above. Hot takes that don’t correspond to reality.
I’ll give you an example. There’s massive consternation on Reddit about “wasting” a segment on the 640a replay. Consternation how listeners have heard it the day before, heard it on the top 10, etc..
The problem? TSL tells them how long the average Neilsen PPM metered listener listens for. Ratings data tells them that are basically zero listeners who listen at 840a AND at 640a the next day. The 6am hour listeners are different than the 7am listeners, both are different than the 8am listeners. The average Reddit user is not the average ticket listener.

  26. And I’ll give you an example from my life. One of my first sales jobs in radio, when I was but a child, was for an oldies station. My biggest account was an avid listener. His complaint was we played the same songs too often. I listened to his complaints, and talked to the PD (RIP Chuck). Going back to the guy that was responsible for probably 50% of my paycheck at that time and trying to explain why he was wrong was a tough sell. But my client, who listened for 10-12 hours a day wasn’t a typical listener. The PDs point was he programs for the average listener, not the extreme. It’s every programmers dilemma, do you program for the average listener that listens 10 hours a week, or the reddit user that listens 10 hours a day.

  28. The moment any actual evidence, much less a smoking gun, is presented, I'll take this accusation seriously. To say someone is a shill, a boot licker, or is falling for Cat's machinations because they find the claim implausible is a reflection on that person's willingness to believe the worst in others with no proof other than anonymous claims based on anonymous sources. All things being equal, this assertion seems laughable. In my mind it remains as such unless, again, proof or genuine evidence is produced. If ever either of those are revealed, I will absolutely be open minded to this claim.

  30. The latest It’s Just Banter Patreon episode is largely about this Cat move. So far my favorite revelations are that My Ticket Confession once had info from an email that was critical of TC’s work, sent by Cat to only TC and Jake. Very obviously, Cat shared the email with “The Plainsman.” Given how that blog was so sure that the dumb zone would lose their case and was on Cumulus’ side, this is not surprising at all. I’m wondering how many comments that were pro-cumulus anti-TDZ were Cat and his minions.

    2. Let me point out one thing. TDZ didn’t win their case. Neither did Cumulus. They settled because it dragged out long enough to get Cumulus a couple of ratings books that showed zero ratings drop off from THZ to TSS.
Im convinced they settled because cumulus saw there’s a limited number of people willing to pay for content, and those numbers at the time weren’t enough to hurt their ratings. And ratings drive revenue.

C minus, you’re convinced that’s why they settled? Not that Cat acted like a douche and didn’t know what the Fan was, then said the DZ was trying to lure away listeners and his proof was emails he received BEFORE the podcast was announced? They quickly settled after his testimony and after Dan made them look foolish in the way only he can. And when they settled, they gave TDZ everything they wanted, so yeah, one could view that as a loss.

  31. Hey Cat, I’ve been listening to the ticket since I was 13. My dad was a day 1 P1. I’ve enjoyed the ticket for well more than half my life. Thanks to your leadership, I am more productive, more present in my daily life, and have been able to explore new hobbies and topics. Had you not done an amazing job at completely ruining the station that I loved, I wouldn’t have so much extra time to expand my horizons in life.
Your horrendous programming decisions, willingness to lie under oath, comfort with fucking over so called friends and coworkers for the sake of a heartless corporation, and attempt to subversively take over a listener driven sub Reddit, have allowed me to feel good about never listening to the station again.
I wish you the best and hope you have an opportunity to retire very very soon.

One of them being that this subjective “this thing sucks” mentality that shows up here and is pervasive in Reddit is out of touch with the reality that people like Bennett and Catlin see every day.
Let’s remember TT was in a great ratings groove and then the hang zone left. And the Ticket managed to stay in that groove for another 2 plus years. Is the sweet spot weaker than THZ? Maybe. Has it hurt their overall ratings, no.

Snarky, but from what’s been said, I think Catlin, the rest of the hosts, etc all thought a deal would get done. And I’d think they’d a catch 22, he gets slammed if he doesn’t answer emails, gets slammed if he does answer with what he knew at the time.

    1. From listening to the latest It's Just Banter podcast with TC and Jake, they laid out the facts:

      1) Jeff Catlin sent an email to TC and copied Jake (as he was the producer of Bad Radio at the time) regarding notes on TC's performance. No one else was on the email chain.

      2) TC then goes to My Ticket Confession and sees a discussion regarding himself, in which the Plainsman said in effect, "I am hearing that TC's performance will be dealt with shortly". The only way the Plainsman would have known that because Cat forwarded that email to him, clearly an HR violation.

      3) TC then escalated it to HR saying that a private email regarding his performance got sent outside the organization. TC reached out the Plainsman to get his help in proving that Catlin had forwarded the email to him but got no response. Catlin then lies to Cumulus HR, saying he did not forward it. Nothing ends up happening because The Plainsman didn't want to help TC by showing the forwarded email because he didn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Cat. However, Cat did offer a de-facto apology to TC later on and treated him better.

All that being said, all the circumstantial evidence leads to this being a real incident.

What right now seems to be a very bad optic for one Jeff Caitlin, might end up being the downfall of TC and possibly others. If you're gonna come hard at people you better have your ducks in a row, facts straight, and you better damn well be telling the truth.

    6. Tricky, none of that is circumstantial evidence. It's more hearsay and assertions. Circumstantial evidence would be the publication of a genuine enail or the likes. The moment that happens, game on. Until or if that ever happens, right now all of this is a defamation case in the making.

      Delete
    7. "I am hearing that TC's performance will be dealt with shortly"
-would that pertain to his horrible Ticker reads, constant coughing on air, maybe just pretty bad on-air in general?

    8. Ed, TC and Jake worked under Cat for a very long time. They were there long enough to see the internal politics at the station and how Cat treated Tier 1 staff differently than Tiers 2-4. Jake also said in the episode he had evidence of a few more incidents Cat did that could get him fired.

Whenever is it a case of management versus employees, I will more often than not, give the employees the benefit of the doubt. Why would TC and Jake lie about this? Why would they open themselves to a possible defamation suit unless this was true? Why are people here so pro-Jeff Catlin and are having a hard time processing that he likely did all this? I love the station too but come on guys. Just my two cents.

      Delete
    9. Tricky, I hear you. I too most always take the employees' side by default until proven otherwise. But none of that, including Jake's claim regarding emails/evidence means squat until it's shown. You raise the very sane question I did: Why would any of them make such claims if untrue? Moreover, why would Cat engage in such behavior (talking here about the reddit stuff)? Neither makes sense, neither is rational. But like I said in a previous comment, people do irrational, stupid things.. My example was Kevin Durant and his burner accounts. I could have also used Favre and his dick pics and many other examples. Not sure if you were addressing me or not, but asking legit questions and offering reasonable analyses is not tantamount to defending Cat. It's having a desire to know the truth, no matter where it leads. This isn't aimed at you, but I do my best to draw conclusions and ascertain the truth as best I can by way of factual evidence. And I also try my best not to get caught up in emotional groundswells.Let the facts bear out, From there the truth will out.

      Peace to you, brother.

    13. Ed, all good points. Without hard evidence, this comes down to trusting the indirect evidence that has been put forward and also trusting the characters of the people proposing it. Who is one going to believe - TC, Jake and the reddit moderator or Jeff Catlin/Peter Welpton? I agree with your overall point though, in that, pursuing hard facts and evidence is critical to uncovering the truth, not only in local stuff like this but on the national stage. Guess we shall see. Thanks man.

      Delete
    14. C Minus - Yes, all directors treat staff at various positions differently. However, at a base level, management has to treat staff respectfully. That is the crux of what TC and other support staff are saying in that Cat was largely an asshole to these guys.

      Delete
    15. I hear you, Tricky. I would say that I know none if these parties. Jake and TC are entertainers. Cat is a suit. The others involved are anonymous. What I do know is this: TC has for years been very public about his dislike for Cat in particular and The Ticket in general. His reddit ama alone is legendary. That points toward (points, not definitely is) bias. Jake split in a very public and contentious way with Cumulus, and has made public unflattering remarks about Cat. This too could be construed to show bias. Cat is the former direct supervisor of both TC and Jake, was intimately involved with the aforementioned contentious departure and subsequent court case involving Jake AND had a by all appearances unfriendly work and personal relationship with TC. That also can be viewed as potential bias. Then there's the reddit aspect. Ticket teddit is often more anti than pro Ticket. Rightly or not, it is now perceived as more of a DZ proxy site than an actual Ticket fan page. That too can be taken into account.

In short, there's a lot of digs in this hunt.

      Take care, man.

  41. This is pure insanity. Plainsman, either put this thing out of its misery or take control and go the verified members only route.

Why are some of you so rabidly invested? All these claims of inside knowledge, former employee status, and more. For what? What is the end game? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Are trying to impress a certain party, and if so, who and why? All this over a PD at a radio station who takes orders from on high. This isn't passion, it's pathology. It's a "grassroots movement" conceived and executed by a small group of anonymous individuals coalescing around a claim by an anonymous source who in turn is baing their claim on an anonymous source. Furthermore, no evidence backing this claim has yet surfaced.

Want to get real with this, then cone forward both with your identities and most importantly, with hard evidence.

I am in no way associated with the station. I am merely asking what I think are legitimate questions and making what I believe to be legitimate observations about some pretty flippin serious accusations that if true could greatly damage another's reputation and even cost them their career. Such things are not a game. So if the evidence is out there show it. Real evidence, replete with actual time/date stamps and all the rest.

If that evidence exists, and if Cat dud engage in such behavior, then shame on him and whatever the fallout is, so be it. If it doesn't, shame on all of you, and pray no one (much less a band of pixelated pitchfork wielding zealots) ever unjustly and in a cloaked cowardly fashion comes after you.

That he was/is a lawyer is pretty interesting. My guess, and that's all it is, is he will not address the claim(s). He won't because he is, as they say in the legal profession, exploring options. Even acknowledging, much less speaking to, any accusation or claim could be injurious to any avenues he might wish to pursue. Hence, I'd be surprised if we see anything from him.

Regardless of the verity of any of these claims, regardless of who's side you're on, I must admit this is a most fascinating turn of events that might trigger an avalanche.
