A List, and Some Thoughts

I'm still thinking Corby and Danny stay where they are in the positions they now have.  I don't think Danny will be elevated, if he even wants that with his other outside interests.  He may not.

The thought I have is that the replacement must have sports knowledge.  Must.  This is where The FAN eats The Ticket's lunch.  It's where The Hardline has weakened over the years in a way that there simply was almost no serious sports talk on the show except maybe when Corby would talk tennis or college football, and even then  .  .  .  .

The second thought I have is that the replacement needs to have some weight, some heft, some adult credentials to rein in Corby/Danny's more juvenile tendencies.  Although, on further consideration, maybe The Ticket is looking to get younger at all positions, bring in some guys at the lower end of the demo that they seem to be losing.

So let's go through the list:

Of the current hosts, only Donovan strikes me as a potential Hardline replacement, and I don't see that working, much as I like Donovan.  Just not enough razzle-dazzle, and I think Corby and Danny would be tiptoeing around him to some degree.  While he and Corby do seem comfortable together and can put on a good show, that combo just doesn't spark for me.

Cat isn't going to break up BaD, and is not going to move BaD into The Hardline slot -- I don't think.

That leaves, in no particular order:

Jake:  Leading coming out of the turn.  Sportsy, loquacious, smart, snotty.  At first I thought Jake with Corby would be too much snot for one show, but of the people at the station, he's probably tops.  There's no weightier Ticket guy available except Donovan, assuming neither Bob nor Dan graduates to The Hardline.  (And, if so, it would have to be Bob.  Dan -- Corby would say, "Are you kidding me?"  Besides, I think both Bob and Dan really like their time slot and massive intern support where they are now.)

Mike Sirois:  Love Mike Sirois.  Sportsy enough?  A little thin-skinned sometimes, makes for some interesting radio.  Cirque is frequently replaced, although he seems to be present for his producer duties with The Invasion.  He doesn't suffer fools gladly and he and Corby/Danny might be a tense fit.

Sean Bass:  Oddly, Sean seems to be a polarizing figure with the Confessor.  I like him.  Is he flavorful enough to boost The Hardline?  He's been moved into a semi-management role at The Ticket, so there's some weight there, and he is sportsy.  I don't recall a Sean/Corby pairing in the past but I'd like to hear it.

I don't see anyone more junior than Jake, Mike or Sean being serious candidates, as talented as some of them are.  Both Justin Montemayor and David Mino have turned into accomplished hosts on the Work in Progress Sunday show, they're both very good.  But with them there's the weight problem.

Ty Walker:  Like him on Country Force, and he can talk baseball.  He's gotten kicked in the cojones for so long by hosts -- all in fun, sure -- could he be elevated?

Dave Lane:  Again, a guy I like whenever I hear him.  I didn't think his +1 coat-and-tie "interview" appearance last week showcased him to good advantage.  His Mike tribute was great, but overall he didn't seem to be at his best.

I like Eli Jordan quite a lot, but I just don't see him leapfrogging more tenured in-house candidates.

One possibility is to do nothing.  No replacement.  Leave it as the Corby/Danny show.  Anyone else thinking that Corby sounds more responsible without Mike present?  Danny too?  Maybe I'm imagining things.  The Confessor seems to think that would not be a good idea, but I wouldn't mind it.

Let me throw out a couple of longshots:

David Moore.

Mike Doocy.

They're both sportsy; they're both adults.  I have no idea whether they are available or willing.  I do believe that Doocy, at least, could keep his current gig and still do the afternoon show.  David has to be present at Cowboy events and skulk around the locker room, so his availability is less certain.  However -- what is it that is making me think that David Moore is not a young man?  I went looking for his age and couldn't find it, but I think I heard somewhere that he's actually out of the demo.  (David, sorry if I've misheard that somewhere.)  He may be ready for a regular radio gig and broadcast paycheck.  Both are familiar to Ticket listeners.  Both have a sense of humor.  Doocy would need to tamp down his natural inclination to deference.  And again -- The Ticket may not want to replace Mike with an actual adult.  No idea whether either would blend with Corby/Danny.

And I think Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton is available.

I'm probably forgetting someone's favorite, and when you tell me who I've forgotten I'll smack my forehead and apologize.

What is Pants Finnegan Trying to Tell Us? -- Listening Too Hard

+     +     +

I was fascinated by Gordon's "Pants Finnegan" "new Ticker guy" character back a week or so ago.

WARNING:  I am about to overinterpret this.  Punch out here if you don't like wild MTC speculation.  We KNOW you don't like non-MTC speculation.

Unnecessary Question:  Why did Gordon create this character?

Obvious Fact:  Pants doesn't resemble any current Ticker guy, or any guy currently on The Ticket.

Sketchy Observation:  He might be teasing guys on other stations, but when he does things like that, it is usually done in the context of some kind of conversation with that other station or overhearing of the other station's broadcast.  (See "The Touchdown Brothers.")  There's no reason to make the guy a Ticket guy.

Over-Analysis:  Let us assume that Gordon has reasons for what he does.  A stretch, I know.

So if Gordon is (1) not making fun of a Ticket guy, and (2) not making fun of someone at another station, that leaves only -- he's pre-emptively making fun of someone he thinks might be coming to The Ticket.

The San Diego reference and bombastic delivery = Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton, currently featured on the "Corby Davidson, The Ticket" drop.

Over-Conclusion:   The Ticket is steeling itself for the introduction of new voices -- maybe not Hacksaw, maybe not a Ticker guy, but some bombastic sports talker like the ones we don't listen to on other sports-talk stations.  They are not happy about it.  Gordon is staging a pre-emptive attack.

(By the way:  I happen to like Hacksaw.  This site has recommended that The Ticket hire him. (See The Ticket Should Hire Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton.)  I lived in San Diego for a few years and seldom missed his late-drive/early-evening show.  And he was a first-rate Chargers PBP guy.)

There is my extremely speculative take on what Gordon's Pants Finnegan is trying to tell us.

I ran "Pants Finnegan" on Google Images and this is
the first item that appeared.

The Ticket Should Hire Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton

How's that for getting to the point?  You may have thought you wandered onto another site.

Look, I know The Ticket Top 10 is probably cheap to produce, advertisers like it, you don't have to have a fancy host (although Chris House did a fine job, I thought, and Jake Z is staking a claim), and P1's get to hear stuff they didn't catch earlier in the day.  Personally, I think the DFW 7-11 slot is tailor-made for Hacksaw, and Hacksaw is tailor-made for both KTCK and the P1 Nation.

Would anyone object if Dan Patrick got bumped an hour or two?

Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton  .  .  .  where have you heard that name?  You've heard it on The Hardline, where Mike R and the boys make merciless fun of Hacksaw.  And indeed, Hacksaw is, ah, somewhat over the top.  But if you were to hear him, as I did for nearly five years during drive time when I worked in San Diego, you would say -- this guy isn't all that different from Norman Hitzges -- also, I am told, a former target of Ticket hosts before he joined the team.

Okay, okay.  Yes.  It's the worst rug you have ever seen.  But I'm telling you, Confessors, he runs a helluvan entertaining sports-talk radio showgram.

At the outset of his program -- I'm speaking of the way he ran the show some years ago, and I'd be surprised if he does it any differently now -- he puts "topics on the table," which is an amazing recap of the day's sports news.  His show is 100% sports, which is a complaint that non-P1's have about The Ticket.  No guy talk, no current events.    In further contrast to The Ticket showgram model, he takes a lot of calls.  Like Norm, however, while he is friendly and gracious to most callers, from time to time a caller will get under his skin and his "Hacksaw" persona will emerge.

And by the way -- he is delighted to talk puck.

Alas, he has something of a history of issues with station management, and he also lost his gig as a superb play-by-play guy for the Chargers as a result of some contretemps or another.  A pity -- his play-by-play is frankly the best NFL pbp I've ever heard.  He got chased after one pre-season game when he was slated to be the Vikings play-by-play guy -- he does have some unfortunate race- and gender-related broadcast issues in his past that would have to be vetted.  (I don't know what they are.)

(That nice young Michael Gruber would have an unfathomably deep source of new drops should Hacksaw join The Little One.)

I see from Wikipedia that he's doing drive for XEPRS-AM 1090 ("XX 1090 Sports Radio"), the "X" denoting a Mexico-based transmitter, broadcasting into San Diego metro.   Details, details.

In all candor, I'd much rather hear original programming in the evening than the Top 10, no offense intended to whoever the host happens to be.  Hacksaw would, I believe, be an instant hit with the P1 Nation.  He'd have some issues with the hosts who have teased him in the past, but there are hosts right now who aren't all that fond of one another.  And The Ticket would add to its all-star roster with original local programming with a proven radio star.

P1's ask around.  Confessors, if you've ever lived in SoCal, give me your thoughts on Hacksaw.

I know this isn't going to happen.  But, as I never tire of reminding the Confessor Nation:  as Chicago sports-talk pioneer Chet Coppock used to tell his evening callers, "your dime, your dance floor."

Cumulus, he might come cheap.  He might well be willing to relocate.   Give it some thought.

PS:  It is conceivable that Norm H will not be able (although willing) to broadcast forever.  Hacksaw would be an absolutely perfect substitute, although he'd probably want a gig with more than two hours a day.  I don't know how old Hamilton is.  I'll leave the due diligence to the Cumulus HR department
