OPEN THREAD: Weekend Wife Swap

How did the Newbury/Anderson and Harrison/McClearin pairings sound to you?

I missed the former and am now listening to the latter.  It sounds to me like I thought it would -- the guys sound quite a bit alike, and the sonic brew is further confused by Casey Millen's contributions (invited by Harrison), who sounds quite a bit like Matt.

But the content is good, if a little forced.  Harrison is very self-conscious about the wife-swap experiment -- he has several times referred to The Soul Patch overall as "mediocre," and is reviewing the program as it goes along.  I think I might have just played it cool and gone ahead and done the show without all the self-consciousness.

Having said that, I'd be willing to listen to a few more episodes of this combintation, see what develops.

The Scrubs and Patch have generated a surprising amount of interest among Confessors lately.  Have at it, Nation.

  1. I liked it more than what's been on since Elf left. There were moments where maybe they had something. I'd listen again and wonder how they'd sound a month from now or down the road. Seemed like a step in the right direction for Sunday morning.

  4. TC and Jake need real jobs, not a weekend show. They're grown men for C-sakes.

  5. I dunno about that. I didn't hear their weekend nighttime show way back when, and I STILL haven't downloaded any IJB. Some Confessors liked the experiement, others didn't. Judging from their brief tenure, I gather that the Cumulo-Ticket Overlords didn't think it was suitable even on a weekend night. From what I hear of the two of them, I can't imagine that an IJB-type show would work during daylight hours on any day at The Ticket, whatever merits the presentation may have.

Myself, I think Jake is real good and I still don't get how the
CTO determines the allocation of airtime to T.C., but the guy seems to have his fans.

We'll be exploring The Future of the Ticket issues in greater depth in the months to come. Pretty soon, in fact.

  6. Whoa, hosting the Top 10 isn't a real job? It may not pay like one, but I'm there nearly 40 hours a week, and I have another part time job in the morning. If you have some sort of other "real job" in mind that would be better for my career than having an on-air position at the most popular radio station in a Top 5 market...at the age of 26...then I would be glad to explore those options.

I don't think it's a real good look for me to rant and rave about what we offer on the podcast, and explain how a live show would be different, etc. I have a million things to say about this but instead, I will just address you directly, Sir Plainsman. One, I like your style, but I can tell you that based on your occasional issue with the HL's vulgarity, you probably wouldn't much like ours. IJB is (to me) a surprisingly well received entity, but, there is no question that our support comes almost entirely from our own demographic. I'm not saying I don't want your patronage, I'm just saying our cultural reference points and thresholds for off-color content are a bit different. Again, an on-air presentation would be different, and I hope one day we get to do that and you can judge us based off that. As to why we haven't done it again, you have to remember, 1) there are several scheduling conflicts on Sat evenings/night. Stars hockey is almost every Sat night for 6 months. Mavs post game shows are common on Sat. 2) putting another show on the air is another show that management has to listen to, evaluate, and coach. 3) Our signal is notoriously poor after 9p. 4) there is the fact that they (logically) don't prefer to run original programming broken up by throwing it to network for a few hours. The one we got to do was the lone weekend in a 5 month window where Sat night was open, and it was known beforehand that it was just a test case. Not saying our performance had nothing to do with it (which by the way I thought was solid and management's review was generally positive), just that there are a lot of factors at play on the weekends.

We would like to do some weekend work in the future, because while podcasts allow us to practice hosting a talk show, you can't simulate the real deal.

Lastly, again, I think it's fascinating and really cool that this blog exists, because I grew up a hardcore P1 from the age of 12. But let's all just keep some perspective from time to time. I saw someone say here the other day that (paraphrasing) they'd be shocked if I ever got a host gig, and shocked if I was even still employed at the station in three years. Let's cool those jets, amigo. I've had one year with the Top 10 and I'm proud of the part I play on it. I think my ticker work is strong and getting stronger. I find it hard to believe that anyone would've looked at "One Year Into The Business (Insert Host/Producer/Ticker Guy Name Here)" and been able to see that they would turn into what they have. I exempt Gordon from that, by the way.

    Stay Hard, team.

  7. Jake, thanks for checking in and for the kind words.

Not sure where that "real jobs" comment came from a comment or two back, but it's clear you put in your hours. I recently tossed a major bouquet to the Top Ten, but I think it may have been in a private email. In any event, I thought Chris House was good in that role but (if I may be permitted to kiss a little 'TCK-celebrity ass) I don't think you've dropped a step.

Yeah, I can't comment on IJB but I have gotten the impression from other comments that it's probably a little rawer than my ideal showgram would be. However, a lot of Confessors really like it and I consider it a hole in my Ticket knowledge (among numerous others) that I've never downloaded one. I need to check out the Dan or Mike episodes, if I can find them. I went in search some time ago and couldn't seem to find them among the others that were on your page. I'll try again.

Thanks also for the perspective on the weekend experiment. I've heard varying accounts of its coming and going, glad to have yours.

All right, everyone -- Jake was nice enough to post a thoughtful comment, let's keep the responses up to MTC standards.

  8. A while back, I asked TC for his top-5 IJB's. I still have them downloaded if you'd like to listen, Plainsman. Took a bit of back-bending to dig up the older episodes.

I've got plenty of thoughts on the wife swap, if anyone cares - I haven't had time to write them up though. I have a week though, right? :)

  10. For the record, I just took down an Anonymous comment, not because it was vulgar (it wasn't), but because it was too dumb and nasty to live, and, if I may don my hall-monitor sash for a moment, entirely uncalled-for.

Anonymous, there are other Ticket sites where your billingsgate will fit right in. Go there.

  11. I have all the IJB downloaded on my computer and haven't got anywhere close to listening to them all. But AP I would be very interested in what TC considers his top 5 are and Jake if you're still checking this thing, I would love your opinion too on that matter.

For the record, I think IJB is great for what it is and would agree with Jake that it is no where near what it would have to be (Language, time restrictions, etc.) to be a live on the air program.

I think both IJB and CDS have a chance to take over a spot whenever that time comes along. Obviously CDS is more ready (if that's correct english) because they have a weekly show now. I applaud the efforts of IJB for putting in the time and practice that is needed to make it in this world even I have no clue what that even means. With the amount that you are talked about and referenced on the various shows, tells me you're doing what you should and should keep on keeping on!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. AP: Yeah, would love to have that top five. Do you have a link?

And you have as long as you want to give us your wife-swap thoughts. Since I can't post every day this site is unavoidably stale from time to time, but the weekend lineup and speculations about the Ticket junior varsity is one of the hotter topics on the site.

So check in with your thoughts when you're able, with my thanks.

  13. IJB is the best thing about the ticket right now, and it's not even really officially part of the ticket. Of course, I am a part of IJB's "target demographic" so to speak.

  14. Outside of the episodes with Dan (38), Mike S. (51), Mike R. (56), and maybe Followill (76), I would just suggest rolling current. In my opinion, those guest eps are great because they give some of my favorite people open forums, but it doesn't tell you all that much about what we do. I believe all of those are available via iTunes. The Sirois and Dan eps are also fairly vulgar, Plainsman, although that falls mostly at the feet of the guests.

So yeah, besides those, I'd just DL whatever is current.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks, Jake.

Vulgarity is not a disqualifying element of my listening choices. After all, I love The Hardline, and I'm guessing it's the most vulgar show on DFW radio. (I don't regularly listen to hip-hop stations.) It's just an unappealing feature for me. For others, no. But I don't put my fingers in my ears when I hear gratuitous profanity.

So I'll look forward to checking out iTunes and those shows. Thanks.

  16. "But let's all just keep some perspective from time to time. I saw someone say here the other day that (paraphrasing) they'd be shocked if I ever got a host gig, and shocked if I was even still employed at the station in three years."

    Jake,

I'm the Anonymous who made said comment (and so, yes, I'm also the Anonymous associated with the LWJ exchange that the Plainsman is posting). I'm sorry that you took my comment as a slight toward either you or TC. It was not intended to be as such. I meant only that because of the way the station is structured, I would/will be surprised if you don't move on to another station or market in order to pursue what seems to be your profession of choice. Unless a weekday host leaves there's little or no chance for a new show to break through - other than on a limited weekend basis with perhaps some fill in spots - e.g., CDS. And from what I can discern, it seems that your goals are set higher than what is/will most likely ever be offered up at The Ticket. When the station does make a new a weekday host hire, it seems to trend toward making an outside hire. Corby replacing Greggo being the only exception that I can think of (but in essence he had been co-hosting for quite some time - and they did try to find a replacement elsewhere - e.g., the myriad of plus ones). In conjunction with the above, the longivety of those who hold your positions seem to run about three to four years, on average. I believe you can find examples of both the above points in, say, Kevin Scott and Expo. (Good company to be in, indeed.) Thus my point was more general in nature.

  18. Portion of the original post in question:

"I judge the man's contribution to The Ticket by his work on The Ticket. Especially his one chance at actually hosting his own show. It was a trainwreck. Both the callers and the hosts demolished the thing. There's a reason why they weren't asked to do it again. I can see that you enjoy the content and presentation that IJB puts forward, and that's great. However, they are minor figures at the station. I will be stunned if Jake Z or TC are ever offered jobs as hosts. Hell, I'll be stunned if they're still at the station in any capacity three years from now."

"It was a trainwreck. "Demolished" "Stunned if they're still at the station in any capacity three years from now."

That sounds a lot more emotionally charged and nastier than what you just said.

Your original post comes off as "Their show was a trainwreck, therefore they suck, therefore they will not be around long."

Great effort at backpedaling though, though.

BTW that "Trainwreck" was radio gold. Gordon calling pretending to be buzz aldrin was an all-time great moment on the ticket IMO, and the artificial intelligence taking over the planet talk was entertaining as well.

  19. Anonymous After Jake,

You might've benefited from considering the entirety of what I wrote before you posted your comment. Both playing the "gotcha game" and attributing motive onto others are rather poor forms of argumentation. If you had read the whole of my post (or read it closely at any rate - which, if you're going to respond to it, you should have), then you'd have understood the genesis of my remarks: My comments were/are in no way personal attacks; they are merely my subjective thoughts regarding The Ticket, its future, and its future in conjunction with demographics and the "evolution" (if one will) of the aging P1. My remarks have nothing to do with IJB "sucking." I stand by my statement that the one Ticket proper airing of IJB was a trainwreck. I truly believe that it was. And I don't think that my opinion is either out of line or an outlier. Furthermore, nowhere in my opinion do I claim that IJB is incapable of putting on (what I deem) quality programming. In fact, I say it has (e.g., the Rhyner interview). Your claim that the one Ticket airing of IJB was "radio gold" is perfectly valid. As is mine.

I don't think you really understand the meaning of backpedaling. Or perhaps it's a case of sloppy reading/thinking (?).

One question: Since you claim to know my emotional state and intentions, I assume that you believe yourself to possess psychic powers. (I think that's a fair assumption.) Would you please mind telling me who will (let's keep it sportsy here, as it's a blog about a sports talk radio) win the next Super Bowl? The sooner I place my bet, the more money I stand to make. I thank you in advance for your assistance.

  23. I'm guessing because it's funny to ignore/reduce someone who just spent way too much time of their day writing some overblown blowhardy essay about a podcast that has probably 300 listeners.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How is that funny, Concerned Parent? How does it reduce? How does it ignore? This comment of yours is the 2nd one you've made on this site. So you've now taken the time to post 2 comments on 2 different threads on something that you imply is a waste of time. What does that say about you? Off the top of my head I'd say it says that you're a troll. You're not clever, you're a nonsensical loser.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yikes, someone is angry. I was just speculating on the thought process behind the comment. After all it made me laugh. Ask a stupid question get a stupid answer.

  26. For clarification, as if it mattered to anyone, I wasn't referring to the plainsman's postings, I was referring to the long winded comments by Anonymous who made the initial comments about IJB.

  27. Concerned Parent Triple post extravaganzaAugust 22, 2011 at 11:45 PM

Before someone gets up in arms about me calling the comments "longwinded" (just my opinion), take a step back and realize that we're just a bunch of dude posting comments on a blog that follows a radio station known for its fart jokes and busting eachother's balls. Try not take this so seriously, will you?

Not saying there's anything wrong with in depth discussion, but there's no reason to get worked up over something posted here.

You make no sense, Concerned Parent. You're a troll. Perhaps we ought to analyze the thought process behind your now string of comments. Comments on things you supposedly find not worthy of commenting on. The only person around here who seems a bit irked, is you. Let's summarize. You hurl smarmy, snarky fruit from the peanut gallery, only to return after someone calls you out because you can't stand it that you were made to look the fool. Then, when you return, you use the "just kiddin' don't take it so seriously, oh, I wasn't talking about you" load of b.s., only to end up snarking again. You're not clever, you're, again, a troll. If you were consistent in your distaste for lengthy comments or postings, at least you'd have some integrity here. But since you choose an Anonymous alone, instead of saying Plainsman, LWJ, Jake, ap, and that's just for starters, you lose all credibility. That's the kind of thing trolls do, I guess.

Concerned Parent you might as well have said "and so's your mother." Grow up. Or at the very least move on to another blog's comboxes to get your jollys.

Maybe this person is the old Grumpy Anonymous? Whoever you are, you're heavy on invective and incoherence, and light on substance. Oh the perils of the adolescent mind. Plainsman, I'll leave it at this. I won't respond to the troll any further, regardless what it writes.
