Mainly Just Freshening Up the Thread

I got pretty much nothing today, but probably need to get a new thread started.  Man, 107 comments to the last one.  I need to step up my game here.  By the way, huge readership during RaGE's implosion, and it looks like quite a few are sticking around.  Thanks to all for shopping at My Ticket Confession.

Got a laugh out of George's and Gordon's live Raising Cain's commercial this morning, which was not only unscripted but completely unconceptualized.  It sputtered along for awhile until Jer or whoever was working the joint today mercifully started running another ad while George and Gordon were still speaking haltingly to one another, and finally stopped in mid-nothing.

How about some thanks to the CTO for a big investment in draft day?  Not everyone enjoys it, but for me it's kind of like Race Week.  I have no interest in NASCAR but I really enjoy Rich's broadcast.  I know zero about the draft or college players, but the enthusiasm Norm, Bob, David, and David (and George from Valley Ranch) manage to sustain for hours and days on end is pretty remarkable, and a fun listen.

That's it.  Thread is now  .  .  .  open.

Actually . . . RaGE probably didn't implode, it more or less got, I dunno, detonated or something.

Plainsman: Thanks for finally posting a picture of yourself. You look pretty much like I expected.

James said...

I'd like to ask the readers something: Am I the only one who considers himself a strong NFL fan yet cares very little about the draft? More specifically, my level of interest isn't one-tenth that of Norm or Bob's. And the amount of hours they have been discussing it this week has made me change the dial numerous times.

birq said...

I'm a lot like you, Plainsman in that I don't give a crap about the draft but I'm entertained by Norm's passion for it. Also, I'm also a beautiful redhead wearing lingerie.

Anonymous Ron said...

I know some people get into the draft, but I do not. I know it is a necessary function of the NFL, but as they would say over at the little Ticket, the bang to hype ratio is WAY out of whack. I will not intentionally watch a second of it on TV, but will tolerate it to some degree on 1310 AM.

Has any owner or GM ever declared in their post-draft press conference that their draft class sucks and they will just do the best they can with what they got? Do we need to go back and review Jerry's euphoria over his draft classes in the last 5 or so years?

Off-topic:

Y'all remember the hickish e-brake caller that used to threaten to "come down and kick George's ass?" That was a funny bit, and I wonder what happened to him.

While on the (off)topic - what about the guy who used to rattle off random names? Real deep-voiced soft-spoken guy, non-hickish. Really funny.

Given the popularity of that segment and my captive audience here, I know I'm not the only one who knows of whom I speak.

Anonymous said...

That was a running gag with the caller imitating one of Emmitt Smith's speeches, thanking all those that helped him get to the HOF...it just went on, and on, and on...pretty funny.

Big Anthony said...

This will be the 1st draft in 10 years where I won't be by the channel from pick 1 till the end... Draft day is where the Ticket kills everyone..

ausgang said...

James and others, I love the draft. I also love The Ticket's draft coverage. Now I'll admit I don't care for in depth draft talk in, say, November (talking to you, Norm and Newbury). But once it gets near, I'm all in.

Deezy, the soft-spoken name-rattler Emmit-imitator used to crack me up. I wish he'd come back.

T4 In Rockwall said...

Along the ebrake vein, the callers are the main reason why I listen, not that the ebrake isn't any good, but that there's always good bits the callers have going on. My the Fake Natalie Mane needs to give it up. And yes deezy...the caller who called up and threatened Jub was a great bit.

T4 In Rockwall said...

Oops, not sure why I typed My to lead off the Fake Natalie Mane sentence, shoulda been And.

I loved the Emmitt Smith guy, and I appreciate the guy who asks, "Is the answer (insert name of former winner of the punt/pass/kick competition)?" And love him or hate him, you have to admire the tenacity of the nasally-voiced "vaginal slice born born" guy. He probably has a 90% attendance rate over the past few years, and a couple times I've heard him get in twice in the same week.

cactusflinthead said...

Yeah, I like the draft on the Ticket. Will probably have baseball and hockey working in the background while I listen to Norm and the gang. I wish it was still during the day and not a prime time production. But, oh well progress. It is a lot like signing day for me. A big production for the signees and nobody anywhere has ever had a bad draft or signing day. The outcome of the draft for our team at least has been less than stellar for the last decade. It is somewhat entertaining waiting to see what sort of wild ass deal/pick Jerry comes up with this year. Maybe the blind hog will find an acorn this year.

Yep, on board with callers for the e-brake. Said that a while back. Any reason to jerk Jub's chain is a good enough for me. I miss the fake threat guy and the fake Emmitt speech caller. A few responsible callers to keep it moving and some wheels off craziness to keep it fun. Vaginal slice born born guy is another one I would miss if they were actually capable of ferreting him out. Kudos to you sir for your persistence.

lovin'everyminuteofit said...

Ah. Here we all are extolling the greatness of The Musers. And why? Because of callers; because of their interaction with the P1; because with them we're all (still) in on the joke and in the clubhouse together. Compare and contrast with the other drive time program. Okay, let's not. We beat it to death last thread. But you all get the drift of my message.

pDubLahey said...

I just discovered this site two days ago; this thing is amazing! Thanks Plainsman.

I love the E Brake callers! I have spent years pondering the genesis of vaginal slice born born; does anyone know what that means? It's funny to me because Gordon still gets so angry every time (or at least plays along well). The whole bit makes the Musers seem humble. THL should try to turn "John in Plano" into an once-in-while bit and see how long people will hold and see if they get all mad like John in Plano.

While I have all things Hard on the brain, I became a big strong P1 right around the time Greggo left, so I only really know THL from the last 5 years or so. I'm a huge Jake fan (I think space is super gay). having said that, I think the show infinitely misses Grubes presence (his personality and his sweet moves on the board, way more than Hammer.

Like it or not, Corby is definitely the captain of this ship now. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of Corby in Charge for most of the reasons that have been discussed here.

I have a cynical theory that ever since he became a father, he has slowly become less informed in both current events and entertainment news and loves to talk golf and talk tennis, too, and he sounds like Simon Cowell when he talks about music. His approach to the show does come off as lazy.

having said all of that, I love THL! I always laugh at a minimum, a few times whenever I tune in. Sometimes I laugh as hard as I possibly can. I am so grateful to have this show in my life and all of the joy it brings me.

So how do you guys think the Cowboys are gonna do this year?

pDubLahey said...

Also I'm not sure how or why the morning-drive-afternoon-drive-east-coast-west-coast-thing got started but I'm a Ticket P1, not a Musers P1 or Hardline P1.

It's like saying that you love one of your kids more than the other.

But if you put a gun to my head and made me pick only one Ticket show to listen to forever, I'd go BaDD over either of the others. How do ya like that?

"...A couple of steaks."
"And baked potatoes!"

Anonymous Ron said...

I see Fox Sports Southwest is going to feature the girls on a road trip with the Stars.

How about that?

slinky said...

LOL!! If Corby is the captain of this ship, we're in for some serious Costa Concordia action! I'm touching on Anon Ron's previous thread comment when saying, all of Corby's bit's are pretty much sel-serving bragging. Mix in that he doesn't have much to start with, and it gets ugly quick! Politics is touchy and I might get canned here, but when THL started their bit on ol President High Gas Prices gag today, that was a FAST punch out! I don't care a THING about Goober's Book Store! Plains...bring back the numbers!

The Plainsman said...

Slink -- to what numbers are you referring? You mean my speculations on All-Pro Foundation Repair? My support for signal swap?

pDubLahey: A most warm MTC welcome to you. What took you so long? Hope you join our phalanx of frequent and thoughtful Confessors.

By the way, how did you stumble on My Ticket Confession?

The Plainsman said...

So I'm in the vitamin store. Guy asks if he can help me. I say yes, my hands are starting to cramp up from deleting boistrous Confessors and I read on the Internets that I probably need more magnesium. He picks me out some generic pills and I say to him: George DiGianni says do not get chelated magnesium. He looks at me and takes me over to some powdered unchelated magnesium that he says is the best stuff. We'll see if I can rid myself of this MTC-threatening condition, but I thought I would pass along this example of Better Living Through The Train Station Fitness Show.

BOB AND DAN JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE PERMANENTLY RETIRING FROM THE STARS POST-GAME PROGRAM. IF I UNDERSTOOD MATTERS CORRECTLY, THIS IS AN IRREVOCABLE DECISION THAT WILL NOT BE REVISITED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. They thought that "the blogs" might pick this up, so thought I would oblige.

@Plainsman
Preciate ya, pal. I stumbled upon your great site while doing some idle Greggo googling, then proceeded to spend about five hours acquainting myself with this space in lieu of doing homework.

I feel like a lot of folks on this blog give Corby way too much credit for his show prep in the past. This is a man who continually struggles to hang on to his wallet and car keys. He has great imrov chops; I wish he would shackle himself less to Huffpost and IMDB. He's way more interesting when he's in the locker rooms of title contenders or hanging out with Shaq. Now he golfs, watches the Mentalist, and hangs out with toddlers. The same could be said of Mike in regards to having a boring life. He skipped the near-perfect Yu game for band practice, and he seemed perfectly fine with missing it. No judgments, they are who we thought they were, and we let them off the hook...

If you, the confident Confessor, could rearrange the hosts a la White Elephant, what would your lineups look like?

pDubLahey said...

Here, here. Big NFL P1, draft is a huge beating, but I'm always anxious to hear Bob and Norms thoughts on the Cowboys' picks.

...And on a semi-related note, the only way I can start to feel better after the inevitable Cows loss is the Norm and Donnie post game show. They make sense of things emotionally as well as the X's and O's. A true blessing...

Anonymous said...

If I understand correctly this either means that Bob is going to become a full-timer with the Stars (while still remaining on BaD) or that the Stars are moving their radio flagship station, and The Ticket sees no reason to have a postgame show for a team that has little relevance in the local sports scene AND that is no longer a part of their family.

Any other thoughts?

Disclosure: I didn't hear the announcement, so if anyone has any further info on this I'd 'preciate ya pal.

The Plainsman said...

218, I apologize if my all-caps sarcasm misled anyone. Bob did say they were going to retire but it was pretty nod-and-a-winky. Dan was taken aback and said that maybe he shouldn't be so hasty, but Bob said -- still with a smile in his voice -- that he was trending that way. My takeaway is that Bob was mainly being provocative -- but maybe 5 years of bad hockey has begun to wear on him. I only posted that because he (again, slyly) said he supposed the "blogs" would take this up.

To whom he could have been referring, I do not know.

By the way: Every once in awhile I ask if anyone has encountered any new dedicated Ticket blogs or fan sites. I've gone looking for them but haven't found anything other than the DFW radio/media boards. Anyone knows of one, please let us know.

pDubLeahy: You should always do your homework.

But please do tell all your friends.

@218 Why would they still have to do post game shows? You don't see the other show hosts doing Mavs or Rangers post game shows.

@236 Ted Madden is on TV. TV is more popular than radio. He doesn't work at The Fan.

Shaggy said...

Bob and Dan are beaten by having to attend and do a postgame show for every Stars home game. They don't want to do it anymore. I assume Bruce Levine will continue to do it with whoever else next season. Beyond that, who knows...but the Stars contract with KTCK goes through next season.

I didnt hear the Stars post comments, but Dan has said on the air it's a beating....for his wife.

On a related note, Sea Bass mentioned on his podcast with Ted Price and Jamey Newberg this was more than likely his last year on Mavs postgame. He said Cat wanted to give others a shot and more airtime.

TC and/or Jake? KT? TY Walker Chicken?

He didn't say if Follywell will continie, but I hope so.

Anonymous said...

I can see that. You have to consider that Seabass is Ticker guy, host of Diamond Talk, does Ticket Sports Sat/Sun from time to time, Mavs post, and has his own show with Jake on Sundays. It's a bit much for any one host. I hope Jake is not his Mavs post replacement. Ditto Donnie. I'd like to see Ty or KT.

David Newbury needs a permanent show. Weekend, weeknight, whatever. His work on the draft shows has been nothing less than excellent. Quite frankly, he's put both Norm and Bob to shame in both preparation and analysis.

Perhaps Bob and Dan will clarify or give further insight regarding their Stars post game status during tonight's final offering? If it is true that they're leaving, I'll be sorry to see them go. Even though they hosted it less and less as the years rolled on, it was always nice to hear them opining Stars hockey on the occasional late night. While I like Bruce Levine fine enough, his new partner (who from all appearances is being pretty much forced on/in to everything Stars these days) Allie Lucia is not very good. She also seems more preoccupied with meeting up with her friends to party than her job. Too bad Matt McClearin is off Tweeting about how many Bama and SEC players got drafted for a living. He did a great job while on the Stars pre and post shows. Oh well. I know the majority of you guys and gals could give a rip about hockey, but for us nuts it's the best sport going. Besides, while I've no idea how long the Stars/Ticket partnership has left, I can't imagine that when it does run out that it'll be renewed. Unless at that time the Stars are once again the "it"/cocaine and boob job crowd team of choice. In other words: a Stanley Cup champ caliber of a team.

Don Webb said...

@BBQ I couldn't agree with you more about David Newbury. The guy is a natural. He is the only reason I listened as long as I did this afternoon. I think he would do great taking over nights and getting rid of Scott Ferrall.

Anonymous said...

So Bob and Dan basically just said that they weren't coming back next season as hosts of the home Stars post game show. And like they did before they said they were moving on, they made the "let the blogs" speculate" statement. Besides this blog, what other blog(s) are they referring to? There aren't any. Which leads me to believe that MTC is very well read by many if not all Ticket personnel (ALL personnel).

Well, this is a sad day. I was perusing the comments on the latest post (about Newbury), and I see that a "first" has occurred: the comments section has been closed by the administrator, i.e., our Plainsman. Quite frankly, I don't blame him one bit.

This isn't my blog and I have no affiliation with Plainsman, but I'm going to say the following:

To lovin'everyminuteofif, cactusflinthead, and to various sundry of Anons: Please cut it out. I'm not sure what's going on, but it whatever it is, it's getting weird. Both lovin' and cactus will make some good, well written points, and then as soon as someone disagrees with them or they see that one or the other has made a comment neither appear to be able to control themselves where personal attacks are concerned. Stop it, guys. Please. I swear, there are times when I think some of the Anons are the two of you "backing up" your own opinions or attacking the others. Basically trying to drum up fake support. It's just bizarre.

lovin'everyminuteofit said...

Ok. Wow. The comments section has been closed on the Newbury article. I guess I'm partly to blame for it. Look. I apologize. I wasn't even going to comment on the subject until I got called out by cactusflinthead. Plainsman, you don't have to worry about me causing future problems. Consider this my last comment. I'm embarrassed for myself. I love the blog and will keep reading it for certain. But my commenting days, as brief as they've been, are over. The day I contribute to a comment section being closed is the day I take away the car keys from myself and throw them into the lake. Again, sorry man.

BBQ said...

Well, that's too bad the comment section is closed on the latest article. But it's understandable, and anyone could see it coming from a mile away. I hope this hasn't prompted Plainsman to give up the MTC ghost. If that's what you're thinking, Plainsman, please reconsider. The interweb would be a worse place without MTC and its owner and senior editor.

I just heard Danny say "If I stay in this city there's no other place where I'd live..." He said it in such a way that I'm not sure if he meant for it to come out on-air. It seemed genuine. I haven't heard anything about his bar in quite some time. If memory serves, the Wilonsky DMN blurb on the bar had a quote from Danny saying to the effect that the bar would be up and running by March. Hopefully all is well on that front. I know many times such endeavors are given the green light by all parties involved, only to have some sort of snafu submarine the whole project. I wonder if that happened, and if Danny is thinking about heading off to new adventures?

Anonymous said...

Wow. I echo the thoughts of 1119 above. This world needs less confessor-on-confessor crime!
I've been reading this blog faithfully since moving out of the DFW area, to keep up with the Little One as I have less ability to listen faithfully, and I enjoy the civil discussion. Unfortunately, there has been more and more inability to keep the discussion civil. I don't blame Plainsman one bit for shutting down a hijacked comments section going the same old direction. Enough is enough.
What makes any site like this great is the diversity of opinions shared. I get to hear and think about things from a perspective I wouldn't normally see. That's why I read what others have to say...it fuels my ability to develop well-rounded opinions. What ruins a site like this is the inability of certain contributors to handle other perspectives.
I simply don't understand. You post an idea, and then someone posts a different idea. So you return to re-post and expound on your idea again and again and again? Really guy? We got it the first time. Someone else views things differently. That's what makes things interesting around here!
Plainsman, I wish I had a solution to curb this troubling trend, but I don't. Just wanted you to know that you have many civil confessors out here who love and appreciate this forum and who are just as fed up as you are with the juvenile interactions going on. Keep up the good fight. We're with you!

BAD prolli started doing Stars work because they LIKED it. Normally the contracted air staff gets paid extra (per game) to do those kinds of things. When they stop doing it, it's their choice, and the station doesn't have to budget extra any more. KTCK can either pay non contracted talent to do it (much cheaper) or have non contract full-time staff (SeaBass, Ty, Etc.) do it for free. School's out gents.

It's been quite some time since I last commented. Really hand't much to say. When I do, it's anonymously. Not this time. Why do I get the sinking feeling that this blog has been abandoned by its owner. Not like the Plainsman to do something as drastic as close down a comments section, without issuing a warning, and then for 2 days now remain silent. Jeez I hope not. I really hope that a couple of anonymous trolls and a few emotional named commenters didn't ruin the whole thing. Surely it isn't so. Surely the Plainsman is attending to business and-or personal stuff and just doesn't have time to fool with fools at the present. I sure hope so. Also hope all is well in the Plainsman's world. This is the very first blog or message board that I've ever read or participated in. Please don't misinterpret any lack of etiquette on my part due to an adversarial nature, merely an ignorant one. I value everyone's opinions here, and I will convey that in the tone of any future posts, as well as keeping posts pertinent to the topics at hand.
