Is Mark Cuban Doing Something Amazing with The Ticket Today?

Our mysterious insider Gypo Nolan has made an oblique reference to something akin -- or of equal significance -- to the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis occurring today.

At first I focused on "crisis."  But perhaps it's "Cuban."

That's all I know.

But I like to get out front on stuff, even if I'm wrong.

  1. I think he means that Greggo will be participating in the belly flop contest at Summer Bash tonight.

  2. My immediate thought was something more between CBS and Cumulus. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I love the cryptic teasers.

  3. I thought maybe the Mavs were moving to The Ticket.

  4. Maybe Cuban is buying The Ticket. Somebody needs to.

  5. Brad C, I almost headed this post "Is Mark Cuban Buying The Ticket?" but couldn't imagine Cumulus letting its most profitable DFW property go, unless it's selling ITSELF to Cuban.

  6. June 21, 2013 - the day Summer Bash promos stopped.

  7. Although it's probably the most plausible theory, I'm not sure why we'd need to "hold our butts" for the Mavs moving to The Ticket. Since Coop probably wouldn't move with them maybe they'd do a TV/radio simulcast with Follow.

Cuban buying The Ticket would definitely be "hold your butt" worthy, although you'd have to think extremely unlikely. Would be very interesting to see what he'd do with it.

  8. Also, I didn't realize it but Gypo Nolan is the main character from "The Informer", a 1920's novel and 1930's film:

"Set in 1920's Dublin the novel centers on Gypo Nolan. Having disclosed the whereabouts of his friend Frankie McPhillip to the police, Gypo finds himself hunted by his revolutionary ex-comrades for this betrayal. Using his muscle, and his empty intellect, he gets caught in his own lies and tries to escape. After the Irish Civil War, Gypo was in dire straights, living off the street and the occasional meal given to him out of pity, he does something terrible. He turns his friend in to the authorities for murder. He doesn't even realize he does it!"

  9. Well looks like GW will be back today. Guess it was enough time to consult a lawyer on his next move

  10. Mavs to the Ticket makes little sense from the Mavs standpoint unless they got moneywhipped (lol Cumulus). Stepdown in signal and 103.3 gives them priority over the Rangers if they both have games on at the same time. It seems like they have a pretty good deal currently.

  11. Or . . . would it make more sense for Cuban to buy The Fan?

    Or Mavs outlet 103.3?

I'd sure hate to see Stars hockey displaced on The Ticket.

I hope we hear something soon, or Mark posts here to advise that absolutely nothing is up. I need to get some work done today.

  12. The new IJB features Richie/Greggo talk.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Greg said when his blog took a few days off that it would be back today. Any evidence of that?

  14. Greggo's Blog is back, Plainsman. Says he will address Richie Whitt series soon enough.

  15. And from Richie Whitt's page:

*After the day-to-day teasing on here I hate to do this, but next week I'll have breaking local radio news that could re-shape the landscape you've known for three decades. And, yes, I'm talking about The Ticket. See ya Monday morning.

  16. "To the legions of you that have contacted me wanting my take on the five-part blog… Yes I have seen it… Yes I read it… I agree with some and I vastly disagree with many… I am sorry he feels the way he does… At some point I will address the entire series…"

Some point = never or three weeks down the road once he is coached up on exactly what to say.

  17. That's strange. I'm looking right at it and the last entry is from June 18 addressing the audio issues ("Mr. Fix-It"). I believe you, livinginreality -- I just can't find a new entry. Tried it a couple of times now, same result. Thanks anyway. Doesn't sound like there's much to report.

  18. nobody above has gotten even close to the actual story that is happening, quite literally, as this is being typed.

  19. re: Anon 12:19

Stars presser was on the channel...don't know if that's a hint or not.

  20. Plainsman, a poster posted Greggo's comments from his blog today right below my second posting. Don't know why you couldn't see it... is your browser going to history? I actually get his new postings via e-mail so maybe he is just e-mailing out his comments instead of actually posting to his blog. I just forwarded the e-mail to you.

  21. All right, Gypo and Anonymous (one or more of the latter), let's have it. You got my email address, if this is something that is ultra-sensitive. At least let me do some teasing of my own.

    We gotta scoop Richie.

    Wish I had a damned source . . .

    ReplyDelete
  22. You're not gonna scoop RW because I think it's rather obvious that Gypo Nolan is none other than RW.

    ReplyDelete
  23. M King, thanks. Have you tried his blog website? What do you get?

  24. "I know something but I won't tell."

Talk about your drama queen . . .

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Anon1240 I am thinking he might be RW too.

I can't see the Mavs going back on the Cumulus airwaves, but stranger things have happened. I am not sure how I feel about him buying the Ticket either. I prefer it when they are beholden to no one. If in the event that the Mavs and the Stars are both on the Ticket wouldn't one get bumped to the blowtorch of the 570 elephantine sibling? God knows they need the ratings bump and it sure carries farther than the littlest of Tickets. I wouldn't mind if they made them the standard broadcast frequency, or better yet flipped formats. That should have happened years ago.

I am not going to spend the better part of lunch on an extended muse of RW and GW, that will require a little more time than I have at the moment. After a full week of reading I think I have enough to form an opinion, how hot sportsy it maybe remains to be seen.

  26. Very doubtful that Richie is Gypo Nolan. At one time I thought it was Robert Wilonsky, but I wrote Robert and he said it wasn't him.

Although we've had some kind words for Richie in the past, I doubt he would regard this site as a friend, and Gypo gave us a Cuban hint that Richie wouldn't have given us.

  27. Mark Cuban is gonna host a show? Couple of times a week like Dale used to?

    ReplyDelete
  28. The Ticket hasn't been around for 3 decades. Cuban is in the business of the new fangled and futuristic, and radio isn't one of them so I doubt this has anything to do with the Cubes. I think this has to do with the Cumulus/CBS Radio merger we've been hearing about in fits and starts over the last two years. I don't think whatever comes down Monday or whenever is going to drastically alter our listening experience. I think only industry minded types like DA, Gypo, and our Plainsman among others will find what happens of interest.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Gypo could very well be RW. I think you underestimate the thickness of RW's skin, Pman.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gypo has posted inside-Ticket info in the past, so it's not Richie.

    ReplyDelete
  31. As I say in the next post -- two in one day! -- Cuban only goes for it because it is a distressed property. A bargain.

Gypo = Richie: As I say, Richie would not have given us a Cuban clue.
