BREAKING: Bad

The world of radio, and, in this case, the world of DFW radio, and, further to this case, the world of DFW sports radio, is pretty small.  News travels fast.  Sometimes it travels fast this direction.

The Ticket/Cumulus has terminated Logan Gourley.

This site does wants to be scrupulously fair to Logan, and does not want to unduly publicize this unfortunate event.  (Yeah, then why you posting this?  Well, you're not going to be hearing Logan on The Ticket any more, so most Confessors could figure it out before too much time passed.)  There are usually two sides to every issue.  Not always two equal sides, but at least two stories.  I only have one.

Reportedly, there were performance issues of the sort sometimes seen with young men and women of the present generation in their inaugural encounter with the requirements of professional employment.

Thought the guy had something, was at least holding his own among the latest generation of JV.

This site wishes Logan the best of luck.

  1. Methinks young Brogan did indeed live up to his bro status, perhaps showing up for his 5:00 am 5 hour shift, eh, how do we say, still breathing fire from last call. Anyone have the skinny? Or a version of it?

  2. In the world of The Ticket some people are liked and some aren't. You could tell he wasn't liked.

    ReplyDelete
  3. How long until he's working "over there"?

    ReplyDelete
  4. So he wasn't liked yet was given a plum job...and was relatively a newcomer. Then was promptly fired because he wasn't liked. Yeah, that makes sense.

  6. Word to future Tickermen: correctly pronounce the name of golfer Cameron Tringale. Or else.

  7. I'm sure Brogan is a good dude, but let's be honest...he was horrible at his job. I cringed everytime I heard him do a ticker. He was constantly stumbling over words and getting information wrong. Just awful.

    Stay hard, Brogan!

  8. Logan was fine, never thought about him one way or the other. Kinda like an O-lineman. If u don't hear about em, they're doing their job. I'm surprised.

  9. Hey everybody - pay attention to me! I have a blog about the Ticket, even though I hardly listen. I want attention!

Wait - not THAT kind of attention! You're only allowed to praise me. No criticism allowed!

I'll turn this car- I mean turn comment moderation on! I really will!!!

  12. Man, ol Wendy bombed this mornin. 1st late, then filibustered, no emotion, that interview did not help her cause any.

  13. No, she really didn't help her cause at all, and I am a Dem.

  14. You don't get hired for what passes for a high profile job in a particular industry at a particular place of employment only to be fired a couple of months into it for being incompetent. He would've demonstrated his incompetence enough beforehand as a JV to have put himself out of the running for the job if in fact he was that incompetent. No. Something happened. Be it showing up drunk (even once) or visibly hungover (once or once again after a warning) or some form of either insubordination or conduct unbecoming to the station had to have taken place for this to have occurred. Fumbling words, etc., doesn't warrant immediate termination. And that's what appears to have happened. If he'd been doing a terrible job for a prolonged period of time, OK, that makes sense. But as another Confessor said, he was neither excellent nor obviously bad. He was a non-factor, which in many ways is exactly what he should be.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This doesn't seem like a firing for lack of job performance, more like something to do with the ancillary part of a job, like showing up on time, or pissing off co workers, or just being drunk

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm surprised that anyone is surprised. I've never heard a broadcaster make so many mistakes and verbal stumbles. I've wondered for weeks how much longer this trainwreck could possibly go on.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hey Anon 1005, didn't miss you a bit. Nope, not even a little.

I rarely notice the Ticker human. Like gunther said OL, unless they screw up they are nearly invisible.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Don't encourage its behavior, cactus. It is a pathetic creature. It leads the life of a sad, little, clown.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It sucks for anyone to get fired so I feel bad for him unless he did something behind the scenes which may very well be possible.

However, I listen the Musers every morning for almost the entire shift and he screwed up at least two or more Tickers every single day. Plus it became obvious in the last couple weeks he had zero chemistry with the Musers and as someone else pointed out they would lay out on him even when it wasn't warranted. Last week I started to wonder how much longer they would stick with him in the morning slot after yet another Ticker screwup and Muser layout. I'll be curious to see who gets the job. I think Justin Montemayor did a really good job while filling in for Bass a few weeks ago. At least his Tickers were always well done with very few stumbles.

  20. Yeah. I mean, whatever happened to "you've lost a reader"? This guy obviously reads the site (check end of previous set of comments, where he seems to have popped up again) and hates it, or me.

And now I'm encountering his lacerating wit in moderating comments.

  21. Overall I like Logan. I think he did a fine job on his tickers and he has a good presence on Twitter. He has a professional sounding radio voice, so I'm sure he'll be able to find something soon. Stay hard Brogan!

  22. Too bad for Gourley. Isn't he the ticker guy that did some impressions sometime back?

I'm still hearing the generic funk music on the stream, so I guess the IT guys are on it like they were on the connection/broadcast problems during/after the move.

It's not been 24hrs and I'm already looking for the moderation to come back.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ditto on the generic musical interlude on the stream. What a beating.

The Ticket even gave Totally Chuck a job back after he sort of bad-mouthed Cat on his way out. But maybe the difference was there were hosts who genuinely like TC, and the same can't be said for Brogan?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Pretty sure that during WTDS dan just called for a moment of silence for Logan.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Brogan had something. It seemed like Gordo liked him. Wasn't he the voice of Jerry Jones' grandson? That bit was genius. Maybe Gordo saw him as a threat and had him whacked

    ReplyDelete
  26. Logan did a couple of voices. Jake did Spaulding though.

Dan did call for a moment of science for Logan, followed by a Norm "FIRE HIM!" drop.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have to think it's an HR deal. Brogan isn't important to the thing as a whole, so he screwed up and got canned.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Silence, not science.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It was obvious junior couldn't stand him. For over a month I've been listening and wondering why Junior (and even George sometimes) were so mean to him. Hell Gordo was usually the one trying to be nice of all people. Every time he talked, junior either dismissed him or was flat out rude to him. Just seemed weird to me.

I was just wondering today why they keep him around if they hate him so much. Mystery solved apparently.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Junior had been particularly a-holish on air the last month or so. He was pissed at Jer about certain audio not being ready, he was pissed this week about some other audio snafu...he has not been pleasant to listen to in general.

  33. Hate to say it, but I enjoy no moderation. Gives me a reason to pop in a couple times a day. During the dark ages, it could be days before anything was posted. Understand there's some BS to wade through from time to time but it's worth it to me to have an active site. My humble opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with Gunther. I hate the troll(s), but it would be easy if we all agreed to ignore them knowing that the rest of us actually love the Ticket, this forum and its Plainsman.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Brogan maybe better suited for yuck monkey role rather than Ticker guy.
Why the heck didn't Ms. Davis's handlers help her out with Ticket Schtick? You are going on the number 1 rated morning show in Dallas-Fort Worth for men and you prattle on about politics for 5 minutes without taking a breath? Come on!-drop. Although the unintentional Jordan/Gordon name was funny, she should have said Good morning to Junior, Gordo and Jody. Keep your answers short and positive. When asked a question about the Cowboys say you just want Romo to stay healthy and make the playoffs. When asked who you had up on your wall as a teen, tell them it was picture of Charlie Waters without a shirt on. Geez, Wendy, call me next time before you go on the Ticket.

  36. Apparently Ticket management had numerous problems. Here is my write up on it. Love MTC http://lukewarmsports.com/2014/09/03/brogan-out/

    ReplyDelete
  37. You know why I went with moderation? What finally sent me over the edge?

    It wasn't the trolls.

It was that the comments were clearly being used to promote Fan segments, bits, events. It was thoroughly obvious these posts were station-directed. I don't mean KT, who sorta gets a pass and wasn't ever trying to promote upcoming Fan stuff.

I don't remember what it was, but there was a posting from some Anon that was nakedly shilling for some upcoming Fan segment, and that was enough. I can't get on here enough to control that crap and I won't have the site used to flog a station that apparently isn't interesting enough to inspire any independent listener to create a site where its own fans may confess and receive absolution.

    So -- moderation.

Some people like moderation, some don't. I'm usually on 5-6 times a day reviewing stuff. Clearly the thread is less conversational, and clearly the average quality of comments has soared.

But since a couple of you have longed for the old days, we'll try it for awhile. Certainly makes my life easier, but I'll probably be a lot touchier about things like tone, name-calling, and gratuitous loathing of this site. And Fan-hyping.

Remember -- it wasn't long ago when the consensus was that I needed to moderate comments. So I don't want to hear any whining about deleted comments.

    TYFSAMTC.

  38. As info has dribbled out during the day, it appears that this was not just a case of someone not "liking" Logan. That is very seldom a reason for termination in today's hyper-disputatious atmosphere, and the vibe I'm getting is that it wasn't the reason this time. I'm not going to get into details partly because I don't have any way to confirm them, and partly for reasons that I hope are apparent to anyone who has ever worked for a living, or hoped to.

As some here have noted, Logan does have some chops, and I agree. Hoping he catches on somewhere in his chosen field.

  39. My guess is it's somehow alcohol related with a healthy dose of a young arrogant man who was already full of himself to begin with (see the Facebook pics) and was given a job he really hadn't earned. The CTO soon realized this via several different incidents and exchanges with coworkers and superiors in conjunction with less than stellar on air work--no doubt "influenced" by his social life/choices.

    ReplyDelete
  40. This is really all the fault of one Dick Hicks.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It wasn't alcohol related so drop that.

  42. Wouldn't have thought Mr. G's departure would have resonated with the P1. He'd been there awhile, but wasn't a huge or unusually distinctive presence. Gigantic spike in hits and page views today, though.

Suspect it's the effect of Twitter. When something like this happens, my linking tweet usually get retweeted or favorited. A few more followers results, and, of course, many persons not familiar with the site learn of it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I now remember what my post was that might have fallen through the cracks. Sorry if it was posted and I just missed it. I was saying how I wish George would do more Fake Michael Irvin. I would really like to see it as an 8:40 bit but it doesn't have to do anything with football if that were the case...kind of like the Fake Byron Nelson or Billy Tubbs. Anyway, anytime a drop is played or a bit might be replayed of FMI, I know it's not just me that enjoys it because you can usually hear the hosts chuckling too. C'mon CTO's, listen to the P1's.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pman, I don't think it's so much that Brogan's departure means much to the P1/Confessor, but rather that this is the first piece of meat to chew on in quite some time where The Ticket is concerned. Although a scrap of meat, it's still contains protein. I think that's the reason why this rather not so hold onto your butts news unless you happen to be a JV or in promotions has sparked so many responses. By the way, that last sentence, I believe, holds the answer to Gypo Nolan's identity. Personally I lean toward either a promo guy who can't keep in-house stuff, in-house, or the person who surreptitiously plays hold onto your butts drops and has even said them at times (no, not Jer, who has played the drop)… The Machine.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I did see you linked to both The Shag and to the P1 Brainiacs page on FB. So, there's that.

Yeah, I like the livelier page as well. I ignore trolls elsewhere I can do it here too.

  46. T4, I remember reading that post, don't recall where though.

I had one that never made it myself. Was a pretty benign post where I commended the Musers on the Whistle Talker bit they did a few weeks ago, man, that almost took me off the road: "Senior Supervisor at the Sachse Sack and Save." Funny shit.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't have very many followers. But if there's breaking news I tend to get retweeted and that expands the audience.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I note the passing of prominent TV director Andrew McLaglen.

He is the son of actor Victor McLaglen.

Victor McLaglen was in a movie called "The Informer."

He played a character named "Gypo Nolan."

    ReplyDelete
  49. Craig Miller does sometimes betray irritation with guests and colleagues, as do all the hosts, but I must say I never really heard it with Logan Gourley. The few layouts were almost flattering. And, as someone has noted above, he got invited in to bits from time to time. Yes, he was not the best Tickerreader, but I hear quite a bit of the Muser show daily and I didn't really sense a big negative vibe towards him.

(Not counting Gordon's jabbing of JV, which is near-universal and which means pretty much nothing when it comes to employment prospects on The Ticket.)

I pretty clearly recall the Jer episode where some audio didn't get played. Absolutely no suggestion that anyone had a problem with Jeremy when that happened, and even Craig's annoyance was fleeting. It was a glitch that passed almost immediately with no fingerpointing.

I'm a Joonze fan, so take this for what it's worth, but I'm not hearing any particular peevishness in his presentation lately.

No host got Logan bounced. This came from the CTO.

    ReplyDelete
  50. George has been doing Fake Mmichael Irvin for over a decade. He did it FOR the Real Michael Irvin. If you want more, go into the archives. It's a tired bit (though school closings was pretty good).

  51. Logan seemed like a good dude but his tickers were awful. #1 rated show can't have a guy delivering sports updates that stumbled over his words like he did.

    Wish him luck.

Now wish Cumulus would wise up and get rid of TC and Jake for good. They do nothing but bring the station down.

  59. What's wrong with Fahey? He does a bang up job on the Top Ten. Unlike other Top Ten hosts, he doesn't make the recap about himself; he understands it's all about the segments.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He click breaths every 5th word, he repeats his name too much and he phrases thr segments like such as that's the only way you're going to know about the shows. Ex. "That's from the Musers, and if you like what you hear, you're gonna want to tune in weekdays from 5:30 to 10 each morning." Yes, he's head and shoulders above Chris House who felt the need to "explain" what everyone was saying, but I don't remember TC being that annoying.

  63. Fahy's idea of a top ten moment is Norm interviewing Chuck Carlton of the DMN. In fact, his top tens are littered with Ticket hosts interviewing some spare. P1s know that any Ticket host interviewing anyone is a punch out. I think he's doing a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Glad someone brought up Fahy (Fahey?)

(Stupid-ass Ticket website - I just hopped on hoping to catch the correct spelling of his name and under "now playing" I see the Top Ten, with a picture of TC next to it.)

Anyway, I've been meaning to comment for a while - he does an okay job, but it annoys me that the Musers' 8:40 bit - which historically has taken the number one spot about nine times out of ten since the Top Ten's inception back with Big Dick Hunter immediately following The Hot Spot's cancellation - now enjoys the number 10 spot. Number 10! History will show that the 8:40 bit (or a similarly humorous bit by one of the other shows) has been supplanted at that position only by a newsworthy event during the day or a particularly special guest interview.

Not with Fah(e)y, though - it gets spot number freakin' ten. Who's this guy think he is?

And why does this matter to me? I don't know, to be honest.

And Plainsman, I'll suggest again: non-anonymous posts. My thoughts on attribution and accountability are well-documented around here, so I'll try another tack: make the loser trolls make the effort to come up with a moniker (and a different one each time, if they're particularly trollish). Right now it's just too damned easy for them to hit-and-run.

  65. My goodness...

I can't believe how much the station has changed since I had to cut down my KTCK obsession. Gribble, gone. Rich, out. TC, gone and back again. Jake produces. Newbury is apparently killed off. The JV gets elevated with guys like Mino, Fahy and Gourley stepping up (well, 2/3 ain't bad).

There's really no point to my post other than to say "hello, old friends". I have the stretch goal to catch up on my KTCK listening by the end of the year (currently sitting at 02/28). If you guys would be so kind as to highlight some major events that happened between then and now that I should keep an ear out for, I'd be grateful.

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ap, what do you mean by Newbury being killed off?

    ReplyDelete
  67. @deezy

The Top Ten isn't a countdown show anymore. The first segment of the Top Ten is just that, the first segment without regard to being ranked. Hope that clears up that confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I should retract that, anon- I haven't heard him mentioned much, if at all, in the timeframe I'm currently stuck in (normally, there's a mention of him being on for ticket sports saturday/sunday or draft coverage).

  73. ap, Nubes has been on the air a lot of late. He was a part of the World Cup show that aired several times per week. He filled in for Dan for a few days. And I believe he's an integral part of the Cowboys pre game show.

Fahey or Fahy does a bang up job. I'm pretty sure he has a CTO directive on how to conduct the show. As in, make it an actual recap of the day. As in, let not just the P1 but also the casual, the on the fence, the just passing through town listener who could become a stream listener, and the casual local listener know what show you can find, say, Homer Call on or some such. Ditto with letting the audience know who your host is, i.e., Fahey/Fahy restating who he is and thus reset the format and gist of the show. In other words, the CTO reworked the format and the way in which it is presented. In other words, to not make it a vehicle for the host; the host who is there merely to announce, to highlight, the show to which the highlight belongs. In other and more pointed words: to not follow in TC's footsteps.

    ReplyDelete

    1. In other words you're actually saying you think that in other words there are actually people who ONLY hear the top ten and nothing else and in other words that is their first and only introduction to the station? In other words seriously? In other words stay out of this Fahy.

  76. Sup fellers,

I love reading these confessions, deep within my belly.

Pman, keep doing watcha do. Thanks for allowing my massive rant about the stream's ad situation; I felt better. And thanks to DA for some information on the nuts and bolts.

Here's a question: what would it take and would it possible to make an ad-free app that charges a small subscription fee? Would anyone besides me be interested in such things? I still stand by my Jennifer Wild/Country Music Bio HSO that they have the reputation of Hitler.

I do like imaging a previous confessor's idea that Jennifer Wild is a really bored and lonely housewife. I think Machine mentioned that they sound like Onion advertisements.

As far as the JV goes, Fahy is my unquestioned and unadulterated leader.

The Brogan news does have that good protein we crave, as well as some ripple effect. Is Sean "btw, I have kids" Bass the permanent replacement? I know he's previously poo-pooed that gig on air, but I don't know if yall know this, but Sean has a wife and kids now that he has to think about.

Is morning drive considered a promotion from mid-days or is it inconsequential?

I like SeaBass' contributions to Norm's show, and I like him just in general.

  77. Regarding the Top 10, I like how Fahy recaps each segment and reminds the listener when each show is on, etc. He is not speaking to the P1 when he does this because we obviously all know who these guys are. But they are trying to pick up new listeners every day so they need to appeal to that demographic. This is still a business. Also, Fahy is my hero after the "hanje" situation.

Honestly, I think the regular hosts could do a better job overall of explaining their bits/secret language to newbies. The goal is to always increase the listener base, why put barriers to entry for them? Keep in mind that we now have listeners who never grew up with Greggo as an integral member of the Hardline for example.

Also, regarding the top 10, more folks are listening at 7pm which is probably another reason why they put the Musers 8:40 bit there, versus later on in the show.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Poor 4:14 am (time stamp kinda says it all) can't see the forest for the trees. I'll never understand why some folks are consumed with being perceived as "right." No matter snowshoe sighted they are.

I wonder if Brogan got into a confrontation with a member of the morning crew about his opinions not being taken seriously and that led to his demise. It had to be because he's a bro douche, no question. I'll bet they hired him for his voice and didn't know about his personality. I'm a shut in P1 so I listen almost all the time and I barely remember him before he got the Dick Hicks gig.

  82. @Tricky Kid,

IMO, one of the things that makes the ticket special and makes for hardcore P1's is the "insider" feeling. and you get that as a listener when you feel like you have some sort of insider knowledge. When they explain everything, it makes it less special. of course it's not insider or special, but it just feels like a secret cool-guy club.
