This is Pretty Interesting, but Not Really

From The Observer's "Best of" list, including text, excerpted without permission:

Best Sports Radio Station Dallas 2014 - KESN-FM 103.3 ESPN Radio

Readers' Choice: KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket
Sure, many might object to this choice. That one station, the one that just turned 20, inspires such rabid passion among its followers that it's hard to fathom that sports fans might tune their radios to anything other than that other station — you know, the one that's won this category here forever. This year, we thought we'd offer some praise to the other guys. Being an ESPN fan is almost like being a Texans fan in a Cowboys city, but for listeners who want mostly unadulterated sports talk without the frills, 103.3 is their destination. We're sure there are people like that out there, and for them ESPN is just the ticket.

*     *     *
I confess:  When my attention wanders between 3:30 and 6, I switch to 103.3.  I do like Cowlishaw and Mosley.  Not that it happens very often, but it happens.

As one of the commenters to the Observer article said, ESPN wins the award basically for just showing up.  It is interesting, though, that the "other guys" they chose to recognize was the partly-outsourced ESPN, and not the homegrown Fan.

Of course  .  .  .  Cumulus programs KESN.

  1. Instead of listening to that trash, take my suggestion and listen to BaD Radio via theunticket from 330-6. You'll be better for it. Then you can put up a column titled "My Week With BaD Radio". Thank you in advance.

  2. Also, IJB will feature the Sturminator this week. I'm guessing it will drop late tonight or tomorrow. (Bob said Jake and TC were coming to his house tonight to record it.)

  3. Cowlishaw & Mosley aren't bad. Mike & Mike are terrible. Colin Cowherd is absolutely horrible. Friedo & Fitzsimmons is awful thanks mostly to Fitzsimmons and when Landry Locker chimes in. The only person more arrogant than Locker is Jake. Jake combined with TC makes BADD Radio an absolute thrashing. Can't imagine sitting through a podcast with those 2 ass clowns. I'd rather listen to The Fan on a constant loop.

    Stay hard.

  4. I have no interest in listening to BSPN anytime before afternoon drive. When I switch over and it is another round of CowboysCowboysCowboys I am likely to point my antenna at KXT. I cannot imagine a morning in which Mike and Mike would be my preference. Even out in the hinterlands I am more likely to listen to the playlist or some random station found wandering around the dial than their piped in feed from Bristol. I do not live on the East Coast, I have no desire to listen to the latest feats or defeats of the teams that reside there. In as much as I grow tired of the Cowboys there is no desire to learn me some NY football Giants.
I still maintain that was a click bait decision by the Observer.

  5. George twisting off on former Cumulus engineers during today's E-Brake segment, one in particular, almost certainly the reviled Brett Blankenship who masterminded the incompetent transition to Victory. Apparently, the stuff is still balky and difficult to use and its misassembly cannot be remedied.

George suggested that Cumulus had Barney Rubble design it.

Craig: "What have you got against Barney Rubble?"

Sean (I think), mumbled that there may be a suspension in the offing.

  6. Fernando made the suspension remark but I think he was joking

  7. Shaggy, I assume you are not suggesting that I replace my Hardline listening with newly-T.C.-flavored BaD listening.

I'm in the car. I'm not going to go through the contortions to download BaD and click into it on the few occasions that I weary of The Hard Ones.

Although, I must say: Are we hearing more current-events talk from Musers/BaD/Hardline overall? Pretty much a constant punchout for me these days.

  8. The ESPN redhead pictured above is Rachel Nichols.

  9. 819: Thanks for listening closer than I was able to (background at the sod office).

Yes, probably Fernando and yes, he was probably kidding. George has flashed fury at the legacy of the botched transition on several occasions but doesn't seem to have suffered for it.

  10. Yes. Dump THL for BaD. I pretty much never listen to THL now.

It's not difficult assuming you can listen to your phone through your car speakers already.

  11. Sorry Shaggy, I can't take BADD. Only person on the show I actually like is Donnie. Respect Bob but don't care for him, find him pompous. Dan is just an utter moron. Never have liked Jake much and out on TC cuz of his scorched earth departure. So, 1 out of 5 doesn't get me tuned in.

The point is, we're all different, and they have a tough job appealing to the masses. They've struck a chord with you and many others, that's great for them, I just don't see it.

Only show of which I am now a P1 is The Musers. Consistent greatness. I believe they also are the only ones not suffering a ratings decline over the past couple years.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Uh, Pman, pop culture and current events are all THL discusses. And that's basically all NPR Gordo does. Moreover, DnM is the show that has local politicians on, on a regular basis. So I can only assume you don't get to listen much to either show, or don't pay too much attention.

  13. The suspension comment was not incidental or a joke. You know what they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

What I'm trying to say is...

hold on to your... your... bottom.

-Not Cat, Not Dan Bennett, Not Ebola

  14. Give it a rest, 1105. You're the same troll that claimed Danny's and The Orphanage's absences were due to Danny's being fired. Just stop it.

-Not Tim McCracken, Not Olgie Oglithorp, Not Clarence "Screaming Buffalo" Swampton

    ReplyDelete
  15. Bob and Jake joked about people not listening because TC is now doing tickers for them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love BaDD Radio. As I think Shaggy said, the idea that anyone who enjoys the show would quit listening because of who's doing tickers is just funny.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It wasn't me but I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's not about his tickers. It's about how he regularly forces his way into the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Count me as another person who thinks it's funny someone would quit BaD Radio over T.C. - 3 tickers and 30 seconds an hour really isn't all that much...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Screaming Buffalo, I'm not sure I understand the reference to Danny, but I have a friend in sales at Cumulus, and I can assure you, something is about to drop. I just want your bottom to be sufficiently supported when it happens.

-Not Danny, Not Greggo, Not Purple

    ReplyDelete
  21. The reference to Danny was that a couple weeks ago when the Orphanage was not on and Jake filled in for Danny a couple days, there was talk about how Danny and/or the Orphanage had been "suspended." In reality Danny was just on vacation in New Orleans.

    ReplyDelete
  22. TC & Jake both stick their noses in whenever the opportunity presents itself. They seem to think that people actually tune in to hear them when in fact that have a bag and nobody cares what they have to offer. Neither are the least bit funny. All Jake does is read stats so he thinks that makes him the ultimate authority. Anyone that thinks TC is only on air for 3 tickers an hour obviously doesn't listen.

Count me as another listener that is done with 12-3

    ReplyDelete
  23. I knew yesterday that the Diamondbacks wanted to talk to Tim Bogar. Corby found out when Mike mentioned it at 5 today.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sorry pal, but to use the -Not X, Not G, Not S moniker means you visit this site regularly. It also means you know what the Danny/Orphanage reference means. It also means you're full of it. So stop it.

-Not the douche who says he's Not Richie, Spittle, etc., Not the douche who claims he's Not Greggo, Not the douche who claims he's Not Cat.

  25. So the Rangers are moving they're radio flagship from ESPN to The Fan. It's been announced on the DMN site. If that's the hold onto our butts news, well whoop dee fn doo. Who gives a rat's ass what station they're on, as long as they're not on The Ticket. I swear, you HOYTB posters are the worst of the worst trolls.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I meant "their," not "they're flagship station. And I meant HOTYB.

    ReplyDelete
  27. All you jack wagons that complain about BaD or THL deserve to listen to the horrible Fan and/or ESPN. As Norm would say... Go somewhere else for your Sports Talk...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Seriously both stations are damn near unlistenable. The fact that Mike and Mike have been on the air for so long is one if the great mysteries of life.

-- NOT purple. Not someone who would rather wear unwashed socks over unwashed jeans.

  29. As far as "popping on" is concerned. I haven't heard enough T.C.-impacted programming to have an opinion on his contributions this time around, but I absolutely do not find that Jake forces himself onto the air when he is not serving as a host. Wherever he's producing or otherwise in the background, his on-mike forays are always pretty brief and, to my ear, respectful, UNLESS the hosts indicate that they want to engage him in the conversation, in which case he obliges and joins in.

I know some of you think Jake is arrogant, but I actually find him pretty aware of protocol when it's not his show.

I feel the same way about Sean Bass. I never mind it at all if he pops on with baseball talk, because it's usually welcomed by the hosts. Seamless, to my ear. (Seanless?) (I actually knew a Sean once who pronounced it "seen.")

My pretty dim recollection is that in the past, back when he was every host's favorite punching bag, T.C's on-popping could be tense and laying-out-inspiring, but my (equally dim) sense is that he receives somewhat more respect now. A couple of people report that Bob's still hauling off for some healthy nut-kicking, so it will be interesting to see how T.C.'s non-Ticker contributions are received as matters progress. Again, T.C. suffers from his past reputation as an air hog and overeager JV. But that was then -- maybe he's learned something.

Before we abandon BaD (which I'm not proposing to do myself in any event), let's give the thing a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  30. How dare any of you jack wagons have an opinion that differs from 2:23 am's! I mean sheesh, really, come on, man.

  31. Orphanage pre-empted again Saturday.

Should we hold onto our butts?

  32. Anything the Observer post should be taken with a five pound bag of salt.

    Period!

  33. The one time I actually wanted to listen to Corby's quick whips was Friday when he teased "Ebola man" segment. I wanted to hear what was the latest. Dan joins the show and the segment was ambushed by nothing but mind numbing, empty Corby banter.

    ReplyDelete
  34. slinky - that's probably THE MOST annoying thing about any of Corby's "feature" segments - that he teases something that is pretty important (or at least listen-worthy) and then when it's time to deliver he never gets to it. I cannot count the number of times he's either started a segment and either wandered off without getting to the tease or started in on the teased topic and quickly wandered off, never to return.

Not to sound like a Corby hater, but he has carved out a _very_ nice life for himself being a yuck monkey-turned-host (actually, that does sound like the very definition of a "hater" - someone who cannot stand that someone else lives such a charmed life being so bad at what they do.) I love the guy when he's doing interviews or running bits (or bit interviews, such as going wireless), because that's where he absolutely shines - you either have a personality/wit for that sort of thing or you don't, and he's definitely got it. The rest is pretty unlistenable, though, for reasons very well-documented by other commenters on this site.

Can't argue with listenership/ratings, though, so I'll shut my cakehole.

  35. Can we go back to complaining about TC? I seriously enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I totally understand why people voice their frustrations and-or gripes about certain shows and-or certain personnel. I've done my share over the years.

Having said that, doesn't there come a point where you either accept Corby, THL, TC, you name it for what he or the show is and either eat that bullet and keep listening, or you move on? It's one thing when a show, like THL, has in many ways markedly changed over the years. For example, today's Mike is almost nothing like yesteryear's Rhyner. And so THL too is almost nothing like it was back in the halcyon days.

So I see why some would vent. Lord knows I've done my fair share of venting on that very subject. Notice the tense of that sentence. I don't anymore. THL has been like this for many years now. Mike, Corby, and Danny haven't grown one iota. Not a smidgen. THL consists of 2 middle aged guys and a now senior citizen desperately clutching onto the ghost of what used to be their youth. The thing is, you can't clutch a ghost, it's immaterial. That only makes the thing sadder than it already is. (OK OK, I just bitched about THL, yet again!) As a result, I've stopped listening to it. At first I'd stop by more often than I'd purposely not listen. Old habits die hard. By and by, my resolution stuck, and now I never listen to THL (a la the BaD radio liner).

My point is that there comes a time to stop bitching about something or someone who's never going to change and to either accept it and shut up, or move on.

  37. The comments are free for all topics if the comments, and the topics, meet my admittedly unpublished and not-always-consistent standards.

But really, haven't we scratched the T.C. itch for the time being? As I said a comment or two ago, let's give the guy a chance with the Tickers and pop-ons. Some people think this is the greatest BaD team ever, some say the show is now a full-time punchout.

No doubt about it, T.C. is a lightning rod who has taken his place next to Corby and Dan as attracting the amperage of the stormy P1, positive and negative.

But time heals all wounds, or can. We'll see if T.C. makes us forget about some of his unfortunate public remarks. Heck, evem Bacsik has made a comeback.

  38. I try PM, I really do, but then I remember this image and the vitriol just flows out of me:

  40. The Junes didn't know Paul Revere and the Raiders?

He may have just lost a listener.

  41. New IJB featuring 2+ hours of Bob is up. Highly recommended.

    ReplyDelete
  42. So glad to have TC mumbling his way through Tickers and inserting himself into conversations again.

    ReplyDelete
  43. @Shaggy - listened to that IJB this weekend and loved it...but then again I'm a big IJB P1 so I love them all. I do prefer Bob with IJB as opposed to Dan though, but that's just me.

On the current suck-titude of BaD and/or THL, I think I greatly benefit from being a relatively new Ticket P1. I didn't move to the Metroplex till 2005 and didn't discover the Ticket until early 2007. I think not being aware of the good old days allows me to still appreciate/enjoy the current offerings. I listen to BaD and THL way more than the Musers or Norm, but to each his own.

    ReplyDelete
  44. George knew.

    Gordon knew.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Bacsik actually has talent, PMan. TC does not. It's obvious. I'm done ranting about that talentless hack. I've just stopped listening to Norm and BaDD. Problem solved. Dongovan = best of the Ticket, young Thomas Charles is the worst.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I still don't think what Bacsik did was dismissal-worthy. Wonder what he would be doing now if the Ticket hadn't knee-jerked?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Bacsik was a good. Cumulus wronged him. But his dismissal opened the door for Sirois, who is an even gooder.

Still wish Bacsik was on The Little One.
