Close But No Qatar; or, Yet More Treading-Water Quick Hits

I'm working on my thoughts on Cat's AMA.  I know, I'm really delinquent here.  Don't write me about it.  You try working the plains with all these storms.  I know, I suck and the blog has been boring.  I appreciate your patience.

In the meantime:

(1)  The Kickaround boys on The Hardline today were fantastic.  They explained the FIFA corruption investigation and charges clearly and interestingly, focusing on the award to Qatar of the 2022 World Cup.  I don't care anything about soccer but I was riveted.

(2)  Didn't hear Danny's Soul1310 show but loved the Reader's Digest version on The Hardline today.

(3)  Corby thinks that the people who cheered for Josh Hamilton on his return to The Temple were all "morons." Mike offered a defense that the Rangers were doing what they thought would help the team, and Sean Bass tweeted (or maybe emailed, I don't recall) pointing out what a bargain the guy is.  A better defense is that everyone likes a story of redemption and the return of the prodigal to the scene of his greatest triumphs.  Hell, he knocked in the only run that night.  (And I see he stroked two taters tonight.)

(4) I'm agnostic on the musical value of the new Stick It Up Your Tailpipe Traffic and Ticket Ticker intros and beds, but I will say this:  They shave some seconds off the old break music.  Even though it's not a lot, the difference is noticeable, especially in the move from Traffic to Ticker -- the whole thing just seems tighter, more streamlined, over faster.  A good thing.

(5)  Corby actually said that he didn't realize that biker clubs were, in some cases, criminal enterprises.

(6)  Did you see where the Rolling Stones did an AMA on Twitter?  Yeah, here's how they did it:  People tweeted questions one day, and the Stones responded the next.

(7)  Wasn't Larry From Mowry going to give us an essay on his listening to Ben & Skin or something like that?  Larry, come to Your Plainsman.

(8)  My THL listening has been a little spotty lately, but every time I've tuned in I've come away with the distinct impression that we're hearing More Mike.   A little more Mike, even when Corby is present. Result:  A little better segments.

CORRECTION:  Earlier releases of this post erroneously pegged the Qatar-hosted World Cup as 1922.  Reader Cody Patterson noted the error.  Your Plainsman regrets it.

  1. Yes, I heard Corby slam any and all Rangers fans who dared to have a change of heart about Josh, as if extending a little forgiveness is measurement of intelligence. I'm not one of the ones who complain here about Corby, but he was way off base here.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Corby needs to stop delivering his edicts as though he were the final word on the matter. It makes him look ridiculous.

Cheering for Josh is not that hard to understand. Who goes to Ranger games? Ranger fans. Ranger fans want the team to be competitive and ultimately to win games. Why would they not cheer for anybody on the team who might contribute to that goal? Ranger fans want to win more than they want to pay back Josh for insulting them (actually, they did that already when he was here as an Angel).

This fall when Corby makes one of his bromantic trips with Junior to an OU football game and comes up for air from expressing admiration to Barry Switzer, will he boo whenever Joe Mixon is on the field? My guess is no. Does that make him a moron?

  3. I heard some of the Orph replacement this morning, not a lot. Always excited to hear what the JV (some Frosh, at this point) are bringing. It was pretty good; pretty good little show. Did not punch out.

A few suggestions from your Uncle Plainsman:

    -- Fewer voices.

-- When coming back from break, remind us who's broadcasting.

-- Slow down; normal speech patterns are a Ticket trademark.

-- Inside Ticket jokes are fine and also a Ticket trademark; inside friendship and employee jokes are sometimes intriguing but frequently just puzzling.

-- OK to be young and hip; less OK to be young and obscurely hip (too-deep pop-culture references).

Show sounded just the littlest bit like the old Ticket version of Ben & Skin with an extra Ben and an extra Skin thrown in. I did get a kick out of the "worst rap lyrics" bit.

Cash and Davey on Cirque -- hmmm. You got something there. That was a good listen.

  11. Shaggy, it's actually not as far right as folks who don't watch would have you believe. There are hard right voices which aren't typically heard in the mainstream, yes. But they always bring the left in for a sense of balance. It definitely leans right, no denying that but to be honest, they are much closer to the center overall than I am, for example.

And, they are the only mainstream outlet currently doing the job for which journalism was created, i.e., holding the government accountable and in check. They also did this during the Bush years. They were the ones who outed Bush's DWI just days before the 2000 election and that is why that election was so close.

The reason they are the object of such derision is because it's the 1st mainstream outlet to actually champion the right to any degree and the left hates it as the left's preferred methodology is to silence the right, they don't want those voices even heard.

If you did not read Grandland this weekend, Bryan Curtis wrote an interesting essay on sports talk radio and its future. While Scott Ferrall is the protagonist of the essay, other local hosts around the country were interviewed and quoted, including Bob Sturm.

  13. I'm a huge fan of Joonz's "may I speak freely?" or "may I speak out of turn?" line of humor, especially when he follows it up with something like "I have nothing to say about that". Playful, train-of-thought-derailing Joonz is the best Joonz.

  15. Political broad-stroke hyperbole is no better than Corby broad-stroke hyperbole. I have little tolerance for either.

While Corby went to the extreme with his Josh HSO, I do lean his way on it and I seem to align with Danny in it. I'm just not going to go all in on Josh and forget how it's always something with him and that he sure looked like he wasn't giving his all down the stretch a couple seasons ago. Yes, he's a bargain now. Yes, he's been holding his own. But that doesn't mean I have to forget he's a mental midget, kind of a jerk, and could turn clubhouse cancer at any time. And I don't like how coverage of this team has turned in to "What has Josh done?" when Prince has been amazing among other storylines.

Does anyone else feel like the afternoon shows have an over-reliance on audio lately?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Plainsman and the first few comments really nailed my thoughts from last Friday. First off, the FIFA segment with Kickaround really sucked me in, thanks for the reminder to download the Saturday show.

Corby and his rant against Josh really chapped me more than a Corby segment usually does. The fact that Danny was riding shotgun was disappointed and Mike cowering to Corby's "I am absolutely right and the final say on this" was equally disappointing. It was just a bad segment. I get it, Corby is a fairweather fan at best but while I would say the overwhelming majority of us have forgiven/let go of the Josh ordeal his piss and venom is tiresome. And like a previous post referred to, what is he going to do when Mixon is on the field for his beloved Sooners or Hardy for his even more beloved Cowboys? I am interested to hear how they wrap up this Ranger weekend because it was quite special one.

  17. Not a backpeddle on the Josh Hamilton remarks, but no further use of the moron word either.

  19. I was going to write up a little something on my ESPN listening experience (compare and contrast to The Ticket). I never followed through on it because, frankly, there wasn't much to report. ESPN is a different animal than either The Ticket or The FAN. Yes there is a fair amount of "guy talk," but on the whole their focus is sports talk. The "guy talk" that is offered is more water-cooler stuff. It's more like the kind of thing you hear at work when talking to coworkers you know, but not well enough to say what you really think. Informal, but not too forthcoming sort of conversations. Some razzing, towel snapping shenanigans, but nothing bordering on edgy. At least not compared to The Ticket. That's what goes on at 103.3. Have to say that the sports talk is far superior to either The Ticket or The FAN--sans Sturm and AT TIMES, Fish. Come to think of it, I think Jake would be a better fit at ESPN than he is at The Ticket. He could stick to sports, which is what he's best at, and not be tempted or even urged to tread into the murky waters of social-political and "I just think" talk--something he's not so good at. There is enough "guy talk" on ESPN to allow for his Spalding imitation, which I know many of you enjoy. Now that I'm at it, if ESPN got rid of either Mike and Mike or Cowherd (preferably both) and replaced one with Jake and __cohost, they could do a helluva lot worse. ESPN is the home of the Mavs, which is one of Jake's two special areas of sports interest (the other being the Cowboys, who are, of course, the #1 topic of interest on every station). So it would make sense on far too many levels for it to ever happen. Still, I'd be for it. I'd listen, for sure.

The overanaylyzation of THL makes my head shake..... THL fail opinions on this blog appear to be consipiracy theorists with tin foil hats in a clandestine chemistry labs.

Corby is good on THL and brings an interesting take.... he's got the charisma to keep it interesting and fits right in with the Ticket guy talk / sports Mantra. He's got good sports takes and not afraid to lay an opinion out there (even if we just want to like Josh Hamilton). Greggo was a cute comic strip character and fun to listen to, but he was no sports genius which made him very entertaining. During the Greggo days, this place must have been on fire critiquing that comic strip. It seems that the old THL listeners can't get past Greggo's Ticket death and frustrated that the Greggo Hardline isn't the Corby Hardline......both are / have been good to listen to.... but Corby is solid.

For the record..... TC might be a bad radio voice, but he's a comic strip character in the Ticket village who just adds to the story.

  23. I enjoyed last Friday's 15 for 15 on Corby's short-lived stint with BAD. I thought it proved that, for all the criticism lobbed his way (which is fair), Corby can be very good. The problem is he's asked to be a co-host when his ideal role is yuk monkey. If he'd just rein in his Hyperbolic Corby persona more often, he and THL would be so much better.

  24. A few quick hits. None positive, sorry.

    1. Wayne Lee, MTC wasn't around during Greggo's run. I can't remember the last time anyone had Greggo Good Old Day Syndrome around here. Corby hate, yes, it abounds. But in many cases, the criticism is valid. Sometimes it's gratuitous, that is true.

    2. The Comerica Bank spot with the shake voice lady who nervously wants everyone to know that she and her husband don't drive fancy cars, take fancy vacations, and just want to be treated with respect by their banking institution is perhaps the most annoying thing since SweetJack. OK, that might be hyperbole, but still, that "we're no 1%ers, don't judge" schtick is the worst. So's her acting. Just terrrrrrrrribbbbbllleee.

    3. Is anyone allowed more sick days, more vacation days, more "+1 recover from vacay days," and "other projects" time off than Mike Sirois? And the guy has a two hour shift at kick ass hours of the day, too boot.

    4. I want to pre say that I mean no disrespect when I say that the Norm intro by the ex-intern's band (Lion something or some such) is gawd awful. The weird affectated vocal style (the annunciation of "o" alone is maddening), the overly saturated reverb effect, and the whole we're a band from Brooklyn trying to sound like a 90s Manchester Sound band geist is really bad. Again, pre no offense. Hell, post no offense, as well.

The drop in ratings of THL isn't due to a bad show....it's amazing the darts that Corby takes on here to get blamed for that.....and overall not a significant drop to begin with. The fact that a minor drop in ratings is being made out to be that the sky is falling (show is bad, Corby is bad, Mike is done) is an over-analyzation in itself. The THL is solid in the ratings.... with other shows on other stations who are also solid.

In business, multiple businesses can be good in a genre. When Under Armor came along and grew, I'm sure Nike took a market hit, but no one over-analyzed that the Nike product was bad. It's all a perspective.

But to the point, here is what I see going on with a little weight of percentages

70% - an expanded sports talk show market. Many more options to go somewhere else with your sports talk....thanks Norm. The Ticket was the only all sports game in town. The niche was there and capitalized on the monopoly. The current good options in the DFW sports radio market has saturated the listeners.

15% - The Ticket's own sports talk "honey boo boo" Greggo drove the ratings up to exceptional levels well over the norm (outside the ratings curve) of what Mike would bring with another "sports" guy.... and now the ratings have come back down to non honey boo boo sports talk show levels. I would suggest that if Mike had started with Corby and not Greggo, the ratings would be as good as they are now with no drop. But if Corby had started with another side kick, not Mike, the ratings would be higher then and now. Mike needed Greggo. Mike's old man mantra doesn't bring out the best in Corby, but Corby is the charisma of the show and Danny is a nice side kick who has grown.

15% - Generalized radio dial wandering....no matter how good a show is.... we all like to check out other options and they get us interested in their different mantra.

THL is good .... tweak if you will but keep a perspective. I know that's against some loud voices of the blog. I'm just here to debunk the wild speculative conspiracies.... kind of like a little 1310 Ticket Snopes.com

Oh and the new TC laugh drop is funny.

  33. I almost never, ever, edit a comment. I may have done it two or three times before in six years. If I see something in a comment that offends the Rules of the Confessional, I bounce it no matter how good it otherwise is. The offense is usually some kind of gratuitous nonsubstantive shot at another Confessor.

I will now make one of my few exceptions. Warren MD in Fort Worst left a comment with some interesting points but also more snark than I like to see and that came thisclose to being deleted. So I cut-and-pasted into Word, edited it, and here it is. Please don't think that 500 words of Ticket wisdom will survive 5 words of snark, just because I edited Warren MD in Fort Worst's comment. Anyway, here is a kinder, gentler version of Dr. Warren's confession:

    =============

In response to Wayne Lee in a Waco Jail:

    - Complaints about The Hardline predate the recent ratings fall.

    - A 50% drop in ratings is hardly a "minor" drop in ratings.

    - The Hardline is averaging around 8th to 10th in ratings in their target demo, M 18-54, that is hardly "solid."

    - Nike's sales have NEVER taken a hit from Under Armour. They have gone up every year, despite UA entering the market. Under Armour started with moisture-wicking clothing that did not exist in the market, so UA they actually expanded the athletic sports market that Nike wasn't in. While they now make products that compete against Nike, their sales are 10 times less than Nike. Remind me again how this point was going to relate to The Hardline, because I'm not following it?!?

In response to 70% - Dallas has had 3 sports stations since 2008.

Suddenly seven years later over saturation of sports talk has driven the very recent fall in ratings? The Ticket has lost market share to the other two sports station, but have lost just as many listeners to non-sports, and as it relates to the Hardline, it has been to "guy talk" on the Russ Martin Show.

In response to 15% - Greggo was fired in 2008, and ratings of THL remained high until this year. THL's ratings have fallen 50% from 2014 to 2015, I fail to see why Greggo is involved in this at all.

In response to 15% - Again, suddenly in 2015 we are using "radio dial wandering" for a ratings fall, as if listeners were incapable of changing the radio dial in any other time pre-2015.

    ReplyDelete
  34. There is a ton of discussion of ratings here and other places. Every time I see this, I keep going back to this comment from Cat's AMA:

    ===========================
    Jeff Catlin said...

    31) Generally speaking there are four things that influence ratings: 1-content on our station 2-content on another station 3- changes in the market place 4- changes in the measurement system.

Depending on who you ask, which part of that equation is the one greatest influence on ratings is up for debate.

    ===========================

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but his point #4 stood out to me. There are barriers to accessing ratings breakdowns and the method of calculating ratings for non-industry insiders. The only openly published source for most of us is Barry Horn and his headlines are often misleading and he does not provide much analysis. With Cat's apparent lack of concern with THL ratings, is it possible that he is privy to "changes in the measurement system" that are making the ratings appear closer?

Sure, if I were Cat, I would probably try to dismiss the apparent ratings dip as well. His final comment to me suggests that he believes that #4 is driving the ratings while his competitors think 1-3 are the source.

I just can't seem to dismiss point #4 in his comment since I hadn't read anything else about a change in the measurement system. If there were no change, why would he mention this at all? Would love to hear some insight on this from others.

    1. I referenced this in a post a week or 2 back. There have been a number of very odd things happening with Neilsens ratings. Just to give you an idea, at one point KEOM, which can't be heard in half the metroplex had better ratings than most of the female skewing stations . Heaven 97 beating half the rock stations in town, etc. From what I'm told every major radio group in DFW has met with Neilsen about this. There's oddities like those above, and things like stations having monstrous week to week swings. Remember that while horn et al comment on the monthly "book", the industry get weekly updates. And when you have a music station thst varies from 1st to 15th and back close to 1st in a few weeks, you can maybe understand why people think there may be issues with sample size, weighting , etc
2 other things- they used to run a promo talking about "aren't you sick of that same classic rock song ". Everybody assumes thst the ticket shares audience with espn and fan, but in reality , kzps was and still msy be the ticket listeners preferred first alternative.
For those that think Russ is the cause of the ratings drop, remember there's a lot of men 25-54 out there, and that the average ticket listener and the average eagle listener are very different. I'll let you guys make guesses about how different and how psychographics affect advertising buys.

  37. As far as I know, ratings are garnered from people using Portable People Meters. I believe I have heard that for DFW, there are a total of ~300 people using these PPMs. And the PPMs are in a constant state of turnover from current users to new users. Not sure how long the current system has been in place. And theoretically PPMs do capture streaming listeners, provided the streaming device is connected to the PPM.

In response to Anonymous at 10:51,

I agree, and think we all would all agree that post censorship is bad. With that said, the Confessor has been very clear what his rules are, and I fully support them, as all he is trying to do is ensure the posts stay away from fighting or bickering, because the forum had gotten ugly like that in the past before the updated rules.

In case you're worried my post was heavily edited, it wasn't. My post is exactly as it was written, except I ended the post with a quote from Billy Madison that is used in the Bad Radio open fairly often. That quote was all that was removed.

To me, the quote was a meta Ticket joke, snarky, and hopefully something that would make die hard P1's crack up. With that said, I fully admit that if you read the quote only as words, it absolutely could be seen as mean spirited, and when I posted it, I wouldn't have been shocked if that ending quote would be removed. No controversy here.

Confessor, keep up the good work!

  40. Consider this: The Ticket would love to have another Grubes. A character who is a character both on and off the air. But no matter how hard they try, TC just ain't him.

  41. Warren MD: Thanks for your comment. I did alter a couple of other phrases that had shottish overtones, but I didn't omit anything other than as you described.

For those who don't like the editorial policy: It's kind of like Giuliani's "broken window" theory when he did a lot to reduce crime in NYC. You see something that may seem innocuous when viewed in isolation -- in this site's case, some lone sarcastic observation about a prior comment -- and the target then feels the need to respond in kind, and pretty soon you've got the kind of flame war that makes so many message boards unreadable. I'm really pleased that almost everyone is playing along with my schoolmarming, and I think it's made for a stronger, more credible, more enjoyable site.

Nielsen has been using PPMs in major markets since 2008.

However, the metrics for streaming are still poor. As a result, in 2014, Nielsen announces that they would do a better job to rate streaming better, but it will not take effect until later in 2015.

"Hey Tones, you suck on Twitter Brah! If you give me a ride to Classic to pick up my X3, I'll teach you how to tweet." Followed by forced locker-room laughter. "Hey, Did Candy finally get that frame for the Picasso in the Entertainment room?" More forced squeak laughter. "You gotta give the lifeguard a hundy at Great Wolf to let the undersized shorties go down the waterslide, Breh." followed by a hand through the hair and a loud intake of air through the nose. "Hey text me and I'll put you in touch with my guy that makes the carbon fiber strollers, Bruh."

  52. I'll tune out on sports radio as a whole before I'll even try another station, but this thing needs radical change. And fast.

  53. I wonder how much the streaming does affect ratings. I live in Arkansas so I listen on the stream, but even when I am in Dallas I listen on the stream to ensure there is no static and so I can rewind or pause if I need to. I wonder how many others that live in DFW listen to the stream even when they could get the station over the air.

    1. That would be me too. I get busy at work and I'll fire up the app so I can pause it and catch up.

  54. I dont understand how stories about him going to concerts meets the 5:15 segment standard? The bar is set way too low. I know there's not much going on in the sports world for Dallas at the moment, but a low quality bit would be so much more entertaining than hearing about how close Corby got to the front of the stage. It's really naseuating radio.

  55. I'm super late to the game, though not as late as Pman, who I don't think is ever gonna weigh in, but Cat's AMA was a huge waste of everyone's time. Specially Pman's time. It was insulting to our intelligence. Yeah Cat bro, nothing to see, all is well.

As to THL: insufferable to listen to. All three of them, not just Corby. I wish Rhyner would retire already so they could put the show out of its self inflicted misery.

Musers and BaD are still greatness.

  56. Yay! They are going to replay the Tones Romes interview. We will all get to hear Corba kiss Romo's butt again. What a treat.

  57. Streaming does not effect the ratings. Technology is in the works to make that happen in the future.

  58. Everything I've heard is that streaming does affect ratings.

  59. I'm jumping on the bandwagon...streaming the ticket on iheartradio or sports day dfw app absolutely sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh, I guess you might mean that streaming is INCLUDED in ratings, so that's not a reason for lower ratings. If that's what you're saying, then you're right.

Latest ratings with Horn's "analysis." BaD and Norm aren't faring too well. Norm especially. Interesting how these numbers come out on the same day new promos urging the listener to tune into BaD and Norm get put into heavy rotation. THL, btw, only nosed out B&S. That juggernaut is officially no more. I hate to say this, but they did it to themselves, and so, deserve it. I suspect that by the year's end they'll be consistently second.

Nothing to see here, right, Cat? You bet.

  62. iheartradio and the Sports Day DFW app are horrible. If you are going to stream the Ticket use tunein.

  64. Ok, I can't believe I'm sayin this, but I actually enjoyed THL's Rolling Stones rant Monday. I was heading to far east Texas and stopped down in Big Sandy to catch whole segment before losing signal. BTW, you want a great seafood spot? Check out the place just south of Big Sandy on hwy 155.

If Cray Trey rips something, and nobody hears or sees it, does it really happen. I would say most people on here are true fans of the little Ticket who are concerned with the direction of some of the programming. Cat thought enough of MTC to do an AMA. Probably not wise to call listeners garbage (in the retweet) But, maybe Trey's opinion only reflects that of the talent in the ivory tower at Victory Park.

Deciding to have and raise children - hard.

Committing to a mortgage - hard.

Risking a job change - hard.

    Burying a parent - hard.

Listing your top five concert experiences - probably the most difficult thing you will ever have to do. Even Junior won't take that on.

It really annoys me the way Corby insults those (like me) who like "superhero" movies, but he cannot SHUT UP about dinosaur ones. What an ass.

  78. What is "concern trolling"?

    ReplyDelete
  79. concern troll
A person who posts on a blog thread, in the guise of "concern," to disrupt dialogue or undermine morale by pointing out that posters and/or the site may be getting themselves in trouble, usually with an authority or power. They point out problems that don't really exist. The intent is to derail, stifle, control, the dialogue. It is viewed as insincere and condescending. Urban Dictionary

See his recent remarks about Chi Chi. If it was up to Norm he would still be in the minors. He saw nothing but doom for bringing him up 'too soon'. He has a new worry each day. If there isn't a legitimate worry he will manufacture one. The Rangers seem to be his favored target. If that season isn't available he will figure out something to pick at for the Cowboys. There is also zero chance he ever revisits these unfounded concerns when they are shown to be not worth the time spent listening. Last week it was more of the same. I punched out when I heard the magic words..."I have some concerns about the Rangers outfield/infield/pitching/bench/farm team/water coolers/tattoo enthusiasts."

    ReplyDelete
  80. Ok. If that's what it means, then, yes, Norm concern trolls. He will revisit a subject, but only if his opinion proves to be true. If not, he will not.

  82. I'm officially tired of folks like Junes telling us how great Lebron is. We get it. Yes he's the best player in the world. And it's amazing how many excuses people are allowed to make for the best player in the world.

I don't remember Jordan ever colluding with 2 all-stars to form a mega team in order to win a title.

I don't remember people talking about Jordan being short handed.

Jordan won 6 titles surrounded by John Paxson, Bill Cartwright, Craig Hodges, Cliff Livingston, Will Perdue and various other spares.

Also never had to hear Jordan remind everyone that he's the best player in the world after his team lost.

Give me Jordan any day of the week.
