If This is Wed., It Must Be WED // BREAKING: Enhanced Babe Elephant Photo

Okay, Confessors, let's get some real-time reactions to White Elephant Day.

Bob, Norm Craig, Sirois have been great so far.  May have to leave the Philco on all day today, hide from the field chief.

Sirois's hep-cat beatnik poem is cracking me up.

I will try to check comments frequently to get stuff up right away.

BREAKING:  You have perceived that I try to match ginger photos with the theme of the post.  Not always possible, never easy.  Try Googling "gorgeous redhead with elephant" and see what you get. Help has arrived in the form of an email from Confessor The Road Not Taken, who offers this replacement for the kind of girl-next-door photo above.

Thank you, Road.

  1. Sirois is lit. 6:50 ticker was brilliant.

  2. Sirois is killing it. I love the Bob and Norm mix. Really enjoyed hearing about how Bob, Junior, and Norm came to love sports. Should be really great until noon, and should pick back up around 3:00.

  3. I have heard Sirois do his Quint speech before. It's a pretty good party trick that I say I'm going to learn but I never do.

  4. Junior's fake Parcells is so great. Very underrated bit!!! We all need more Junior Miller in our lives.

  5. I'd advise all strong P1's to make sure they are listening to the final Sirois ticker of his shift.

  6. Way too much Sirois!!!!!
Hate the way they are cramming that guy down our throats.

  7. Love Sirois. One thing I love about him most is his clear hatred for Ragonk. Always fun when he throws Ragonk under the bus.

    Stay hard Sirois!!

  8. LOVE Fake Parcells - probably my favorite bit Junes does. Always used to look forward to it back when the Big Tuna was still here.

    "Lookit...you GUYS...in the MEDIA, OK?"

  9. Nothing better than an Old Grey Wolf ticket ticker. He's brilliant

  11. Sirois demonstrated why the Manatee is the most feared and admired beast. Plus Junior's Parcells was gold. Jub's Irving never gets old.

  12. Jub interviewing Playmaker was insane in the best way. George didn't come to burn segments today.

  13. Sirois Tickers were awesome. I knew he'd put effort into them and he didn't disappoint. Glad Bob and Norm were very light on sports compared to what I expected. The whole 10-12 shift was greatness between Fake Irvin, Dwaine Carraway and Doocy. Kind of surprised how seriously Rhynes is taking the Tickers. Love it so far.

  14. Today we rediscover what makes The Ticket so great.

  15. @1025 - from Barry's post:

"Folks in some quarters poo poo The Fans' numbers because of the Rangers and Cowboys effect. Instead credit should be given to the station Einsteins for being wily enough to see the benefit of housing the two powerhouse radio products. They are game changers."

If you say so, Barry. The on-air talent still leaves much to be desired.

  16. deezy, I might also add:

Barry: The phrase is not "poo poo," as in feces. It's "pooh-pooh" as in "phooey."

  17. I was able to listen from about 6:30-8:00 this morning and intermittently since then, and in my opinion all of it has been generally awesome. I was laughing my ass off when my 8 year old son came to greet me when he woke up this morning and he was like "what the heck are you laughing about?" I said "it's just the Ticket, these guys are really funny." I don't even remember what they were talking about but it was highly entertaining. I have recorded all of the shows today and plan to listen to pretty much all of it over the next few nights.

Also, in the "credit where credit is due department," I have noticed SIGNIFICANT improvement in the stream over the last couple months. The problems with ads suddenly interrupting show content and with sudden 20-second rewinds seem to have been eliminated, at least when using the SportsDay Talk app. I also use TuneIn Radio a lot and that also has been a much improved streaming experience. Thank you Cumulus and please keep up the good work!

  18. I must say I heard some of the best radio in a long time in the Musers time slot today. The chemistry was outstanding, and they all kept each other in check, with just the right amount of squirreliness. Slam Poet Sirois was awesome, I hope we hear more. And I'm still impressed with Sirois's take on Quint's monologue from "Jaws." I'm surprised Junior didn't ask if that was a line from "Jaws." Sky Walker was great too.

  19. After listening to the White Elephant shows today, I had an idea that might make for a good post during the holidays when everyone is on dry dock and it is a slow go:

If you had to break up the shows and reshuffle the deck with the current lineup, what would your show program schedule look like? Host, tickers, etc.

  20. Sadly, too much Donnie.

  21. Someone suggested they do this again around Easter so they are doing it twice a year.

  22. One of the best WEDs ever, if not the best. The only minor letdown was the pm drive show. I thought it would get more intense with some "getting real" with Jake and Gordo and Donnie. However, the very very end was absolute gold. It is true when the hosts and us claim "we can do what they can do but they can't do what we can do." WED shows that, to the nth degree.

I'm an old fart, so I cherish these Ticket days. Engaged Rhyner and the rest take me back to the halcyon days. While I do like the future, or what I guess will be the future, of The Little One, it's days like these and fill in days that say to me once the musketeers begin to leave, I too will probably be leaving. Or at least listening a lot less often. Like I said, I'm an old fart. But all the data science and statistical lingo speak by the youth movement drives me nuts. It's so stilted, awkward, and at times misused that I cringe. I won't name names, but last week a host said that a certain team was "high variance" instead merely saying "inconsistent" or something analogous, something in plain English. Sorry, but that's asinine. Instead some hosts sound like college kids majoring in business or first year MBA students mistaking technical jargon for expertise and insight. I'm old but I don't mind when I hear unfamiliar slang like "coin" or "shade" or music discussed of which I know nothing about. That's part of the passing, the changing of, the guard. I get that. But the other stuff is flat out annoying. And I don't think it's going away. Hence my inevitable turn away from the station. Alas and alack.

    ReplyDelete
  23. But inconsistency and high variance aren't the same things. "Inconsistent" has about as much meaning as "momentum".

  24. Shaggy, you proved my point. The term was misused/misapplied. In the context of the what was being said, "inconsistent" was the proper term, not "high variance."

  25. Anon 12:55:

I'm fully aware it can come across as petty anytime I respond to criticism. However, you are obviously very intelligent, and polite to boot. I truly do believe that one of the best resources someone in my position has is the knowledge and experiences of the audience. When someone from that audience has a criticism that is not hateful, or about something I really can't change, I think it's valuable to use that feedback positively. I'm aware there is nothing me or my similarly-aged colleagues can do to keep a large portion of the pre-existing audience in the fold forever (assuming I am part of that fold, and I obviously hope that I am). That's just part of it. Also, I do hear your complaint about speaking in "data science" terminology, and that is something I have really tried to scale back. Part of that effort is basically keeping the same concepts that I value in my arguments and opinions, while deploying more accessible verbiage. So, on that front, I have nothing else to say other than: you're right.

With regard to the usage in question. We were discussing the Eagles. It is very possible I am still misunderstanding how to use the term "high-variance" in the game of football, and that is why I am responding, so that if that is the case you can clear it up. To me, they are "high-variance" because, ideally, they like to blitz at a high rate and play a lot of man coverage on D, and they like to throw it deep a ton on O. They haven't been able to do this as much this year because their game scripts have been shredded 10 minutes into every game, but that's their plan. To me, that is high-variance football. And I think what I said was, "the Eagles play a high-variance style, so you never know what you'll get out of them." So, I guess you could say "their high-variance LEADS to inconsistency," but even that feels kind of odd to me.

Anyways, I really do appreciate your comment, and I can't stress enough how much I hope you will email me (jkemp88@gmail.com) to explain how you see that term being misused here, or any others from the statistical realm I may have trampled over (and will attempt to do so less in the future). Thanks again, MTC.

Jake, very cool of you to respond to 1255. I'm not 1255, but I do to some extent sympathize with his/her position. Personally I have no experience with statistics. At least not in any formal way. I know what outlier, median, skew, and a few other terms mean. But anything deeper than that, nada. I think it would be helpful for us non-stats people out there (I have to think there's a lot of us) for you, Sean, Machine, Bob, and others to do a Ticket After-hours show dedicated to educating us non-stats folk. A Metrics 101 primer of sorts. I think it would help us not only better understand the way in which you and others talk about and view sports, but also help us better to enjoy sports on a different level.

    Just a thought.

    'preciate ya, pal.

  27. Well, how about that, a visit from Jake.
I listened to most of WED. Dwaine Carraway's visit might be the highlight of the day for me. I don't think Jub expected him to turn up with a thousand dollars for the charity. That was very cool. Every time he has been on it has been must listen radio. This was no exception.

Hearing about how TC became interested in sports was enlightening. Fantasy leagues do absolutely nothing for me. But, that some stat analysis became the catalyst for his sports consciousness was a little revealing. I'm not sold on them as the be all end all. Useful tools I suppose but they are ever subject to the vagaries of humanity. It's like the stats I saw of shots close to the net and that the Stars were among the leaders and were in fact outliers, far ahead of everyone else, at that moment at any rate. Fine. That tells me what they did. Why they did it is about desire and a willingness to get in front of the net. How do you quantify desire? How do you measure a player's willingness to do the dirty work? 40 times in shorts tell me a little. Al Davis was famous for drafting the fastest player he could. Tom Brady went in what round? Zach Martin was slightly faster than a silo. I maintain it has to be a combination of reading those measureables and intangibles. Everyone looks for an edge. That it happened first in the so very tradition minded sport of baseball is no surprise. Baseball needs to be shaken up periodically. Traditions be danged. If they told me that the plate was to be governed by lasers and there would be the strike zone as it is officially in the book, the low AND the high strike I would love it. To never ever hear the phrase, "His strike zone" would be a wish come true.

Then we can maybe talk about calling the same foul on a veteran as it is on a rookie in basketball. Or even call traveling or palming the ball or any of the other fouls that are routinely ignored. I think it was Reeves a few years ago that said you aren't going to get a traveling call unless he is carrying a plane ticket and a suitcase. You aren't going to convince me that the subjectivity of the calls is not based on personal grievances and power trips. Joey Crawford should have been fired years ago. Angel Hernandez should not be allowed inside a ballpark, much less calling a game.

  28. Knut: GREAT idea for the pirate 7 PM show concentrating on cliometrics, statistics, whatever you want to call it. Maybe they could get Bill James to call in.

Jake: Thanks for checking in. Not trying to kiss your ass here, but your communications are always gracious in defense -- more polite than some of your detractors -- so your reactions are most welcome here.

    Great White Elephant day!

A few people referenced the end of the show segment that was gold between Gordo and Jake. Unfortunately, the unticket didn't archive it as a clip, so I did so on my own.

  30. It is 2:30. Commercials have been running nonstop on the Sportsday app since 2:10. Same commercials over and over. Amazing. Still going. How does that happen??
