Saturday Morning with Rick and Craig

A couple of weekend quick hits:

I had an errand to run up north today  and it being the first Saturday of the month, I thought I would grab a young auto enthusiast relation of mine and drop by Cars & Coffee at Classic BMW.  The Teebox Golf Show (that's what they call it on The Ticket website) usually broadcasts from that event.

Never been there before.  It was quite a thing.  Huge crowd of women and (mostly) men and some amazing vehicles.  Parking was a double sawbuck, but there was no place to park -- actually, the cool older cars were kind of interspersed with the regular old parking.  I found a place where my heap wouldn't look too out of place.  I was interested in the vintage cars but my companion made a beeline for the Ferraris, Maseratis, and his favorites, the Lamborghinis.  I asked him how much he thought they cost.  He was off by a factor of about forty, so I suggested that he go with the leveraged buyout specialist as a career choice, and maybe put "Jedi" on the back burner for the time being.

I looked around for the Teebox, looked for the mast of the broadcast truck, couldn't find either.  I was looking for the usual remote setup, hosts sitting at a table, speakers blasting the show.   Then my companion saw some guys and said, "Is that the radio show?"   Sure enough, there were a couple of guys, Rick Arnett and Craig Rosengarden, with headsets on relaxing on some comfy chairs smack in the middle of the showroom with a couple of guys, an engineer and some other guy who was just kind of a guy sitting there enjoying the presentation and checking his phone.  (Craig on the left with the red cap, Rick with his back to the camera on the right.)

[[CORRECTION:  I am reliably advised that the "kind of a guy" checking his phone isn't just any old guy, but the guy who is a good friend of Corby Davidson, the one and only Eric Maas, owner of Classic BMW.  By the way, if you haven't been there -- it's a gorgeous dealership.  Wonder what he'd take for the Conestoga.]]

A Coupla White Guys Sitting Around Talking Gahf

There were no speakers set up in the showroom to broadcast the show to the shoppers, and I wonder how many of them even knew that one of the original Day One Ticket guys (Rick) was even at that  moment broadcasting in their very midst.

By the way, Rick Arnett has a nice Avid Golfer blog you should check out.  Gahf and babes.  It's listed on the Ticket-Friendly Links, and here it is:  Avid Golfer Blog

Did someone throw some cold water on Eli Jordan?  I was listening to a Ticker this morning and I thought -- I know this voice, but there's something different.  It was Eli, speaking in normal human tones.

I like Eli's overheated narratives.  I hope they haven't asked him to calm down.

*     *     *

Back to Cars & Coffee for a minute:  When we drove out there was a long line of people along the Parkway.  They seemed to have a couple of banners but they were kinda crinkled up and I couldn't read them entirely, although one displayed the partial phrase "CROSS THIS LINE," as though it were some kind of demonstration.  Anyone know what that was about?

I may regret this, but I'm going to suspend moderation and see what happens.  I was browsing some older threads and came across one where the Confessors were talking about moderation.  Some liked it, but a thin majority didn't.  So I thought I'd take off the leash and see if the dog stayed close.

  1. I think Eli's under the weather, hence his muted approach.

  2. I am a huge fan of the Tee Box. I find it to be the most even among all shows. Then again...one show a week makes it alot easier. I wonder what their listenership numbers are like. I know nothing about golf but still listen.

  3. Does anyone have any idea what kind of $ the tee box pays got their air time? I love the show though.

  4. Love me some Tee Box. I dig the insider-ish gossipy aspect of it. I also find it hysterical when Rosen Rosen becomes obviously enamored with himself by deepening his voice to a "sexy molasses" cadence. He comedically achieves the complete opposite effect. But he does it so often and has for so long, that there's no way it isn't his intention.

Not as in love with the JV showgrams and hosts as most here seem to be. It's a shame Bacsik f'd up and got fired. I think he and Jake would've made a great pairing. Jake's a good, but he needs someone at his side to rein him in a bit. That's why he and Bob work well together. It's also why he and Sean, T.C., Machine, and the rest do not. With them, Jake is the alpha dog. And that's when we get immature Jake, which frankly is irritating. Machine has more than a little to offer. He just needs to tone down the cool guy factor a bit. He can come off as bro-ish. His Mavs stuff is great. Congrats to him on his new gig, by the way. I think the main issue with the JV and their shows is that they often speak as if they're on their Twitter accounts. If that makes sense.

Sorry, but the Local Show is terrible. From the jump it's been nothing but Dallas Observer favorite bands. Translation, these are my friends' or those with whom I'd like to count as among my friends' bands.

Norm and Donnie Show is hit or miss. Street Cred Norm is funny as all get out, though.

The year is almost over. Very interested in seeing what '16 has in store for us P1s. The ratings leveling and dips appear to be sustained and legit. Well, except for The Musers. I have to think that as long as everyone is within hand-slapping distance from each other, Cumulus or whoever the new owner might be if there is a new owner will let everything remain the same. If, however, the dips continue to deepen, I have to think some moves might be made. What those are, who knows(?). Though I'd be shocked if any HL move occurred. Yes they continue to incrementally slide, but they've been who they are for so long, that it'd be awfully hard to cut that cord-i.e., make any changes. I'm thinking more along 10-12 and even 12-3. When does that "renegotiated" BaD contract come due?

    1. I have come around on Jake and really enjoyed him with Gordo on WED. I will say that when Jake laughs (it happens a lot), it sounds forced, although I'm sure it's not. Forgive me Jake, because I know you do visit here a lot, for the criticism, but I'm trying to give positive criticism. I really wouldn't mind seeing you get paired with the right person.

  5. Very cool of Jake to come on here in the last blog post. This is why I love Jake Z. He has always been very kind to me when I email him. I know it is part of the job, but he responds better than anybody at the ticket.

I agree, it would be awesome if some of the guys did a "metrics 101" show, but I hope if they do it is a 2 hour show. I listened to Tony's dancing with the stars show, which was very good BTW, but being 1 hour, with breaks and tickers, it was over before it started.

  6. I like TSJ, but Jake and/or Sean doing a metrics show would be as enlightening as Rhyner and Danny doing a show on how U2 arranges and manages a world-wide concert tour. Now if they had Nate Silver call in and let him explain, that would make more sense. I do think metrics are much more relevant to today's under 40yo sports fan than some confessors have alluded.

  7. Jake's response in the previous thread (along with his genuine/respectful tone) is one of the many reasons he's one of my leaders. The way I've seen him handle feedback/comments/criticism and the level of thought he puts into his responses I think is commendable.

As for the original comment, Jake using "high-variance" to describe a team's style is pretty damn appropriate if you understand that different styles of offense and defense can lend themselves to much wider sets of extreme outcomes than others. Not all "inconsistent" teams play a high-variance style (blitzing at a high rate, throwing it deep a ton), therefore the terms cannot simply be interchanged. Or in the NBA, teams that rely heavily on three-point shooting have a higher variance in their game outcomes. It does not simply mean these NBA teams are "inconsistent" in their performance level.

  8. I don't like golf in the least, yet I love listening to the Tee Bag. Can't explain it.

  9. Man do I loathe metrics and sports. It's like tricking up sex. Isn't the thing as it is good enough? This business of making everything a "science" has gone too far in this dude's opinion. Besides, metrics don't tell you why it is, just that it is. We give the objective data subjective meaning, not the other way round. Our deepest held beliefs, our most numerous beliefs are assented to without purely empirical, quantifiable guarantors. And it's on these beliefs from which, that most, if not all of our empirical, quantifiable beliefs arise.

  10. Oh, too boot, much like the humanities, sports has coopted, apprpopriated scientific/mathematical terms for their own, ahem, "specialized" uses.

  12. PMan - Anyway to get Cat back for another Q & A? Maybe a shorter one this time? Really interested to hear his take on where the ratings have gone since the last one.

  13. fries if fresh cut, if not, totsDecember 7, 2015 at 4:59 PM

Would love to hear what Cat thinks about the ratings. But, after the last AMA, I think we all know he's not going to "get real" with us. Can't blame him one bit, either. What's he supposed to say? "Yeah guys, this sucks. Our once upon a time signature show, THL, is now entrenched in 2nd place, our midday shows are falling further behind, blah blah blah." No way. He'll point to DnM's huge and now decades long success and say "winning." That and blame the Rangers being good, the Cowboys supposedly being good, and all that jazz.

My guess is that Cat and the rest of the gang ride this baby just the way it is until someone from up on high pulls the plug. By that I mean Cat gets the heave ho and-or there are some buy out-forced retirements. Hello Norm and Mike. Besides it's only a matter of time before Jake is put in the big boys chair. His meteoric rise ain't for nothing. Chops in the traditional and current statsy sense, youth, connection with the youth, hipness, and the fact that he keeps getting put in the spotlight on every occasion possible. A matter of time. Means of course who's out and-or what deck is reshuffled?

  14. Interesting article here.

I wonder how or if this will affect sports talk radio if the article is right? Anyone out there have any knowledge of such things?

  15. Lots of Corby on the Cowboys pre-game tonight. At the expense of David Newbury.

And an impromptu, puzzling, quite possibly substance-addled cameo by T.C. during David Moore's call-in. He delivered one inactive before turning the phone back to Moore.

But everyone is so dispirited that it hardly matters. Not a soul on the show expects the Cowboys to win, or at least that's how it sounds. Bob is ready to put the scrubs in now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Digging the unmoderated comments. So far, so good. I'm pretty certain TC is drug and alcohol free, so I doubt he was substance-addled. But yeah, awkward to say the least. Awkward seems to be his middle name. But I digress...

What a cruddy game! Neither team is NFL caliber. The Boys are very very very bad and their issues go far beyond losing their starting qb. They're an awful bunch. Lay it square on the owner and head coach, who IS the ball-less puppet that Hansen and others say he is.

As I type this Sean Lee is, surprised, down.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd really enjoy a Jake/Bob or a Jake/Newbury pairing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The last thing I want to hear is Corby taking over the pre-game show. I honestly wish they would just let Bob and Newberry handle it, they are more than capable. Just eliminate the third wheel. Jake and Norm and David Moore's segments are fine, but the #3 rotating host is usually not as prepared and informative as the other guys who do it weekly, especially when it is Corby or Mike.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dang, I think you might be right, Pman. Eli has seemed to calm his delivery. I hope it isn't permanent. He IS the very embodiment of the old Tickerman days. He actually sounds like he's from these parts. And his enthusiasm is the best part of his Tickers, but that seems to have left the building.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Didn't mean to imply that T.C. was a substance-user, much less abuser. He certainly doesn't have that reputation. I only mentioned it because one of the hosts suggested it after his peculiar drop-in.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "fries if fresh cut, if not, tots"

Pman - This, this right HERE, makes my case for forcing people to pick a moniker. This person could have just gone with anonymous, but they picked something that's obviously neither their real name nor provides any clues to their true identity - but if they use this name going forward then we have some degree of attribution. Everybody wins.

  22. Heard the TC stuff, and yes I do think awkward is his middle name @9:13. When does he get the Gribble treatment? EVERYONE would be better off.

Missed WED, so can't wait to block off some time to listen to it. Have heard very good things about this years edition!

    ReplyDelete
  23. To Anon 2:26 - I totally agree. Nothing stops me down more than metrics. Hate when I get my weekly SI and it's full of stats and percentages. Give me the individual stories any day.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If you listen to IJB or Rabble at all you'll know what TC's current relationship with substances is.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So now Dan Bailey is a Hall of Famer? Superlative Corby is so much fun.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Don't understand the Jack love at all. So he reads stats and regurgitates them on the air. Wow what a special talent. I like my sport talk the way the gentle musers and hardline deliver it. They have their own opinions. Their opinions aren't based on some advanced stat geek that publishes a website.

He and the other guy that are featured in this thread are the reason I no longer listen noon to three (dirty noon to three)

    Go Eagles
    Go Washington
    Go Giants
    and long live justin montemayor

  27. General managers are increasingly relying on stat geek. Ask Jon Daniels. Ask lots of general managers. I like the anecdotal, evidence-of-your-own-eyes stuff too and it's important. But seasons are about aggregate performances over time and that means stats. Get used to it. It ain't going away. Maybe we haven't heard the pundit yet who can bring it all to life, but to reject it out of hand -- sorry, man.

Now, a legitmate question is: Which stats are diagnostic of success, and which ones aren't? And if we can't tell, then maybe cliometrics are not reliable, which it itself an topic I'm interested in hearing about. But lots of organizations think metrics are reliable, at the margins, and with parity corroding the game the margins are where it's at.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Shaggy - correct and I will come right out and say it: TC has openly indulged in cannabis use for about the last year or so. And I for one think that's just great.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jake-Z has also been very open about it -- for example he said on the most recent IJB that he tried to watch Star Wars the other day, but got too high and fell asleep -- and again I very much support that type of openness from any media person, as it's no different than people talking about having a few beers or even getting completely wasted on alcohol (Sirois).

Also I know this is very belated but I have been meaning to say that Norm's comments a few weeks back about Donnie's "street cred," coupled with the other hosts making fun of him about it in the ensuing days, was a great example of "they can't do what we do." It was hilarious but not at all a surprise that Norm would make such a tone-deaf comment, and when the other hosts called attention to it I thought it was radio gold . . .

    ReplyDelete
  30. I get that not everyone digs Jake, but to say all he does is read stats and regurgitate them on the air is a bit disingenuous.

Here's one: What will the gang be doing in 5 years?

    George: Morning drive
    Craig: Morning drive
Gordo: Morning drive, and writing for major publications/much higher profile at the DMN.

Norm: Retired, traveling with Mary, but still popping up here and there on the station and in print. Perhaps holding down the Cowboys postgame show.
Donnie: Working in Dallas radio as a host in a sports capacity, but not for any sports station. Part of a morning crew, think KISS or the likes.

Bob: Network gig (perhaps NFL Network), but not PbP or anything booth-related. Also writing for major publications.
Dan: On air talent but no longer in this market.

Mike: Retired, gigging, possibly working on some sort of Ticket memoir with the help of Wilonsky.
Corby: Co hosting THL with Danny and Sirois.

Ty: No longer in the business.
Eli: On air talent in another, much smaller market.
    Sean: Same position.
TC: No longer in the business.
    Jake: Cohost, 12-3.
Machine: No longer with The Ticket, works for the Mavs and has some on air duties with 103.3.
Justin M: Working his way up the management food chain within the parent company.
    Mino: Producer of THL
    Sirois: Cohost, 12-3.
    Danny: Cohost (proper), THL.
Cat: Station manager in a different, mid-market station in Texas.

Shoot! Danny and Corby are THL, not Sirois. He's paired with Jake.

  36. Gotta disagree with Tots on his predictions. No Hardline without Mike. And I don't think Corby can carry a show unless it was a Skip Bayless - Stephen A thing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I disagree that Corby cant carry a show. Dude really shines with whomever he has been paired with on White Elephant day. He will definitely be able to carry a show IMO

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yo tots, you didn't say anything about 10-12. My guess would be either Donnie and someone new we don't know of yet or 1 or 2 hosts who aren't at the Ticket yet.

    Cool question though.

  41. Oh geez.. Just heard Overdrive Hyperbole Corby's viewpoint on Dan Bailey and the HOF.

Let's see - there is ONE true placekicker in the NFL HOF - Jan Stenerud. His career extended from 1967-1985, he was on a Superbowl winning team and he was a 7x All Pro and a 2x AFL All Pro.

Tap the breaks there little buddy. Let's give Dan a dozen more years or so before we schedule his sitting for a Canton bust.

  42. @DRW1961 I was a huge Jan Stenerud fan growing up in small-town Minnesota as a die-hard Vikings fan, he was the best. And I lived in Dallas during the Mike Vanderjagt fiasco and remember clearly when there was all that talk about Vandy being the best kicker of all time (to his credit he was the first to have a 100% perfect regular season and playoffs -- which calls to mind the absolutely heartbreaking Gary Anderson miss for the Vikes in the 1998 NFC Championship Game, his first miss of the season).

  43. How is the voice of the Big Black Cowboy Computer done? Is it Gordo talking through a voice modulator? He was talking live today with Ashley the P1 picking games with the Musers. It obviously wasn't a pre-recorded voice.

  44. Could be wrong, but I think it is a voice simulator that articulates what you type.

  45. The BBCC is getting better. He (it) did the same thing last week with the guy picking calls with the Musers: introduce him(it)self, throw out a couple of offensive jokes, and then sporadically chime in to insult the P1. He (it) is becoming must-listen (early) Friday morning radio, along with Scattershooting and the E-Brake.
