There's a Right Way to Confess, and Some of Y'alls Is Not It

A note of explanation:

If I delete a comment for any reason, I might also delete comments responding to that comment even though they themselves might not be offensive. That is, I'll take down the entire thread started by the deleted one. Otherwise, I get comments saying "hey, what got taken down that this guy is responding to?" Makes my head hurt and craps up the thread.

Now, I'll say this again, and if I have to issue these reminders too much more frequently I'll take this joint down and I ain't-a-bluffing.

If you are the kind Internet participant who believes it is helpful, funny, or persuasive to call someone a name or insult his intelligence, or generally act like a putz, ask yourself two questions before confessing:

(1) Is the point about which I have composed a comment (in the particular case from the last thread, whether T.C. went "postal" or reacted in some non-"postal" way) significant in the context of interesting Ticket issues? If and only if the answer to question one is "yes," go on to question (2):

(2)  Have I included gratuitous insults and demands that waste my time (because I'm going to be deleted) and that of anyone who reads it?

If (a) you reach question (2) and (b) the answer to question (2) is "no," then, and only then, hit the "Publish Your Comment" button.

Then, and only then, will I hear your Confession.

And before anyone accuses me of oversensitivity and a hair-trigger delete-button finger -- a fairly recent development, I should add, since this site has gotten a lot more popular in the last year -- please recall that there are lots of sites with standards a lot looser than this one that would welcome your patronage. If you're going to visit here, get used to mine.

  2. Seems to me it's just the one guy Pman, writing is similar, starting going back to Anonymous once his Name/URL trick was identified. Now he's back to making up names (last post as Regonk in previous thread). Anyway, my point is, I don't believe this is a widespread situation, just one insignificant little rick with a P. I've been able to ignore him but have no idea how many of his posts you've had to delete.

  3. Gunther: There is the one particularly scurrilous guy that you mention -- although with Google's help I'm on his trail as is The Ticket -- but I've taken down a fair number of just plain nasty ones lately from run-of-the-mill Anons who can't resist taking a dumb shot.

I'm hoping I don't have to require site registration to permit commenting, but the thought has crossed my mind.

  4. Or you could go back to moderation for awhile. That seemed to clear the riff faff out for several months--even after you stopped moderating, as it's only been the last month or so since the jokers have returned.

Perhaps it's already been done, but if not, some Ph.D. student in sociology ought to do a study on the serial troll. What drives such an individual? OK, I can see if you get cheesed over a site or whatnot and you let off some steam, and perhaps go a bit overboard; take it a bit too far for a bit too long. I get that. I think it's fairly common. But most people either get bored with it, fast, or they get the bad juju out of their system and move on. Sadly, some, maybe many, do not.

Pman, please don't let one crapmeister ruin a long running, beautiful thing. Hell, even if it's a few crapmeisters, don't let the bad guys win.

    Anyway, my two cents.

  8. Plainsman,

If you're to the point of seriously considering taking the thing down, why not go ahead and start requiring registration? This is actually more than I've been championing for forever (just picking a name), but if it's that big of a problem then whatever you do, I would guess that your more faithful/responsible followers are going to stick around.

I don't think the site will suffer a bit, and this approach works pretty much everywhere. How about a vote?

    ReplyDelete
  9. 826: When I moderated, I started getting complaints about that. And the worst of the trollery started after that.

So the next step if I get tired enough of messing around with the rock-throwers is registration.

I don't really care how many hits I get or how many comments per thread. I don't make dime one off this site, same as when only Michael Gruber and one or two others even read what I was writing. If I'm having fun with it without it becoming a depressing chore, which is the usual case, I'll keep at it.

    If not, gone.

    ReplyDelete
  10. OK, I just heard a D&M ad. But have they always run Autoflex ads during the Musers?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't want to require registration unless it's absolutely necessary. I guess I have the romantic view that this is a nice little site where like-minded Ticket listeners can gather 'round and swap stories, complaints, huzzahs, a little gossip now and then, and sometimes, under extreme provocation, speculation.

Registration wouldn't be much of a speed bump, I suppose. But I don't want to discourage the very occasional Confessor who wants to toss in his or her two cents' without a bunch of rigmarole.

But if some of our newer readers can't use their inside voices, then yeah -- everyone's going to have to have a name tag.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I vote for registration. I'm kind of growing weary of the nastyier tone lately as the site gains readers. I'd prefer a quiet, intimate chat over drinks than a noisy frat bar.

I certainly hope you don't get to the point where you want to shut it down. I'd sure miss it.

Registration is fine by me. If comment deletion is more efficient that's great too.

  20. I should make this a new topic, but want people to see this post for awhile. So here's a new topic:

I applaud Craig "Junior" "The Joonze" Miller for the strong stand he took this morning on the reinstatement of Josh Brent.

He was against it. Passionately, in that very dispassionate Joonzey way. If you can find it on UnTicket, give it a listen.

I would add only this: In addition to Brent not deserving this shot, he showed up fat. Months and months to show he belonged again, and he doesn't have enough respect for the team to stay in shape.

While this move has Jerry written all over it, and while the team is doing well, I've made my decision -- Jason Garrett is not a good head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "...I've made my decision -- Jason Garrett is not a good head coach."

You've made it known you don't listen to BaDD Radio, so I assume you didn't hear the qualified (and verified!) sports talk about how Jason Garrett is about to be a very sought-after head coach after this season.

You may not think he's any good, but many NFL teams - who know better than you - certainly do.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So Chandler Parsons didn't respect his new team either? Carlisle called him fat before the season too.

    It's just what coaches do.

    ReplyDelete

  23. Difference is, Shaggy, Parsons wasn't, isn't, actually fat. It was Rick's way of letting him know he's the coach, the boss, the decision maker. Brent, on the other hand, IS fat, out of shape, and has yet again shown he couldn't give a rip.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just so it's clear, I don't hear much BaD not because I don't like BaD -- I do and I've written about my generally positive feelings about the thing many times -- but because it is inconvenient unless I'm out in the Conestoga during the work day and the Philco is pulling in the signal.

    ReplyDelete
  25. For clarity's sake, I am not Gordon Keith. I wouldn't be surprised if he has read that which lends itself to my pseudonym, however.

    ReplyDelete
  26. All interior D-linemen in the NFL are fat. Pretty much anyone who's been out of football for as long as Brent has will not be in playing shape for quite awhile. I don't think you can judge his give-a-F by that.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Agree with Shaggy on both posts. "fat" is shorthand for "out of game shape." There's no way to get into game shape without playing. Especially for the big boys.

And yeah, Plainsman, I know it's nothing personal for you against BaDD. And to further expound (I got called away by a tyke and had to dash off my comment), The Red Robot is not my favorite coach, but I don't think it's fair to say he's a bad coach. In fact, given the crazy "management" structure of this organization, one could argue he's done an incredible job of making lemonade. Image what he could do without Jerruh in his jock every moment of every day (hint: look to Sean Payton for a glimpse).

Regardless, no matter how you slice it, Garrett is about to get paid.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Am I the only one that does not hear the "rah" in ragonk?

I hear something much closer to "urkel" or "urgonk", than a distinctive "RAH-gonk" sound.

  30. I'm with Junz on this one. Dude has had plenty of chances, 5 or 6. Not happy with Jerry for this but I could say that about 100 different things.

My take on Garrett: good dude, not a football coach. Screwed up the offense as a play-caller and too many game-day gaffes. Sure, he's saddled by Jerry but I have no confidence in him running a team. Seems an ok motivator, players seem to like him although do they respect him? After 20 missed curfew in London last Fri, I doubt it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well...I don't think anything cleared anything. I think you guys would consider me one of the riff raff and I've been here since late 2012. I'm sorry, but this is the most regonkulous comment I've read here in a while. Let's do a little Sturmination...

    "...not a football coach."

But he is. He has been for a long time and will continue to be, whether it's here or somewhere else. Lots of teams were interested in him at last contract time, and they will be next year, too. I love when armchair GMs think they know more about a coach than the rest of the league's top management. If I have to choose between the opinions of "gunther" and the management of the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons, I think I'll go with the NFL guys.

"Screwed up the offense as a play-caller"

You mean the offense that was consistently ranked in the top 10 year after year? Offense wasn't the problem. Yeah, it got stale after a while, but it still put up numbers, and the fact is, he didn't have the players (e.g. O-line) to make it better, until recently.

    "too many game-day gaffes."

Yeah, he made some bad calls. Guess what? Every coach does. Every one. Read a Boston paper and you'll find even the Sainted Belichick makes mistakes and gets ripped for them. Garrett hasn't committed any more than most.

"Sure, he's saddled by Jerry but I have no confidence in him running a team. Seems an ok motivator, players seem to like him although do they respect him?"

You have absolutely no idea what goes on in the locker room, so how can you speculate? Why speculate, for that matter.

"After 20 missed curfew in London last Fri, I doubt it."

This erroneous report was ripped to shreds by many, but Thee Ticket's Own Bob Sturm did a great job. I suggest you look into his take on it (spoiler: it was B.S.).

Today's 840 bit was pretty interesting. The swipe at "the late" Richie Whitt was unexpected. The one that floored me was the believing Greggo's shock therapy story.

  35. If you don't want to be accused of being someone you aren't, let us know who you are. Problem solved. Or better yet, stop positioning yourself as someone of great importance and in the so-called know. You not only provoke speculation of your identity when you speak as some sort of authority who knows better than everyone else, but also you appear to delight in it. Why? Because you do it on a fairly regular basis.

  36. Agreed on ragonk. Sounds like ragurkle to me, but too late now - especially with Kid & the other shows embracing it & it's own website. It is a funny bit and I hope TC is privately embracing it while seeming upset on air for a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If TC took some kind of legal action to get the ragonk website taken down, and I was his boss, I am pretty sure I would quietly usher him out the door in the next 6 months. That shows a certain kind of judgement that I don't think I can live with as an employer in a public medium.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @808

I think that TC should absolutely embrace the website, but as it uses his likeness (presumably without his permission) he as every legal right to pursue taking it down.

His employer reacting negatively to this would be retaliation, which could at the very least earn them some negative pub - at least in professional circles.

Just playing devil's advocate here - again, I think the guy should embrace it. This too shall pass.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "as" = "has". I should proofread more.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Deezy:

Putting appropriating TC's likeness aside for a moment, the website was clearly put up by a KTCK P1. A loyal listener and fan. Tc is a employer of KTCK. Whatever TC did appears to be more than a simple "cease and desist". KTCK is a very visible company and TC is to some extent a public representative of said company.

He may or may not have a legal right to pursue ragonk.com (that right might actually belong to KTCK). Regardless, as a very visible company, I doubt KTCK really wants its employees in legal disputes with fans in a very public way.

This isn't about a right to do something. This is about TC's judgment, which I think is pretty poor in this case.

Now maybe KCTK is behind this but I doubt it. It reinforces every negative thought people have against TC.

I agree that anything he might have done beyond "Hey, very funny, would you mind terribly taking it down now?" is probably excessive. At least as an opening move.

    /speculation

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wait, wait wait.... what is this talk of TC filing a "cease & desist?" Maybe I'm not listening hard enough, but I've heard nothing about it. Before speculation gets to tribble level (a common ocurrence here), let's back up and get some facts going.

  47. I think one of the reasons Ragonk sounds wrong is that the emphasis is being put on the second syllable, which is not the way T.C. said it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree - if this is agreement - it sounds more like "ruhkle" than "ragonk". How'd something gotten so wrong gain such a head of steam? "Ragonk" sounds more and more absurd as I play the drop back in my mind. ;)

  52. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the actual sound is more like "urkel" or "rurgkl" than ragonk. Not sure how it got so messed up but I don't care. It's funny as heck and I love how much it's taken over the station the past week. T.C. hating it just makes it that much funnier.

    ReplyDelete
  55. To be fair, even the hosts have been caught up in Ragonk Fever. They also make it known to all that T.C. doesn't see the humor in it, on any level. So what's a Confessor to do? I say "Ragonk!" I also say that one T.C. is seeing history repeat itself. He came back and thought being the prime target of being butt of jokes was in the past. Not so much. All of you T.C. haters will most likely get your wish in the near future. I'm sure he's actively looking for another job.

The bigger question is: Then what will you clowns do? Talk about him obsessively as if his ghost is still doing Tickers?

  62. "I don't understand why he's not owning it. Nothing but positive for him."

T.C. is a person (note I didn't say "man") who cannot laugh at himself. He has some crazy idea he is above ridicule and frankly, he has a superiority complex.... which is BAFFLING.

I seem to recall Dan not liking the "Dan Alarm," but he quickly shut up, and it's faded away. As someone who has been ridiculed a lot, I can attest that's precisely how to handle these things.

T.C. is a fool, and shouldn't be employed by The Ticket.

And we should've known The Sirois were behind this. Those guys are something special, and I REALLY hope Ticket Management understands that.

  75. The problem with "The Goose" is that's all he has ever said. He has no insight other than "they need to run the ball more." He may be right, but there is a little more to football-ball than that. If he has anything else to offer, he hasn't done it yet.

It seemed to me that Bob was merely stating his opinion as to why he doesn't buy into the Chip Kelly is Greatness meme, tried to give his reasons why, but was talked over and in some sense down to, by the rest of the gang.
