Two Positive Hardline Quick Hits for a Change to Freshen Up the Thread

(1) Loved Mike's rant yesterday on Rangers Opening Day.  I don't understand why we can't get that level of engagement, if not outright passion, much more frequently from him.

(2)  I also enjoyed what I heard of the Corby/Mike Sirois "Masters Preview".  Would love to hear more specialty programming like that after 7 pm.  Did this get any promotion at all prior to broadcast?

Sorry for the undernourished post and otherwise low profile lately.  I hope to be back to a more regular schedule sometime within the next few weeks.  In the meantime, if you have some extended remarks you'd like me to consider, instead of commenting why don't you pop them into an email and maybe I'll feature them in a post?  If I don't I'll run them as a comment.

Thanks for continuing to check in.

  1. OK, this is getting tiresome, a thrashing of the first water:

    (1) I get an avalanche of anti-TC-and-Jake comments. I've been kicking most of them but once in awhile I'll let one through because those gents are not immune from adverse comment. (The "no T.C. comments" rule was lifted awhile back.) And yes, it's pretty clear that a lot of these comments are from the same one or two people who have an ax to grind for some reason.

    (2) Comments on MTC editorial policy NEVER get through and, once I perceive that that's a part of a comment, it NEVER gets completely read no matter how many other topics appear to be covered or how good the comment otherwise might be.

Thank you for shopping at My Ticket Confession.

  2. I'm a big fan of the "special" evening show, no matter the topic. Mainly because I know the host(s) involved will be totally committed to the topic, therefore much more engaging.

I don't care at all for wrestling, but the Wrestlemania show was interesting because the hosts were so into it. A Junes biking show must not be that far off. I'd like to see this become a regular thing.

  3. The after hours golf show was fairly heavily promoted--both Monday and Tuesday. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Corby and Sirois were great. Rick Arnett was fantastic in his appearance. Rick has the right mix of real insider knowledge and gossipy tidbits that hold your interest, even if you're not a big golf fan.

  4. Have I gone crazy or did they skip the 7:30 and 8:30 tickers? I recall reading that 2 tickers/hour was coming but it still caught me off guard. I swear it went from Becca to Conrad to Junez. Assuming I didn't make it up, I liked it a lot...

The 7PM shows have been great. Much more entertaining than Top 10.

  5. 1051: Before everyone jumps down your throat -- Ticket has gone to two Tickers per hour for awhile now.

So no, you're not crazy, but you should visit MTC frequently to keep current with all material Ticket developments.

  6. I agree, I didn't hear it promoted, but heard the golf special last night. I liked it. I hope they do more.

Did anyone hear the cross-talk between The Musers and Norm this morning? I can't believe Norm is willing to still call Dave Bliss a "good freind." The Musers, and I believe THL rightly condemned Bliss as a fake, liar, criminal, and possible sociopath. However Norm goes "old-school" and won't give up on his friendship with the guy??? At some point, isn't their something any friend could do that would make you close the door on that guy/girl? The P1 who emailed the scenario to Junior regarding what could have been, had the other coach not recorded his conversation with Bliss - No one would've known Bliss lied and made up the story, Bliss threw the kid under the bus calling him a drug dealer, his family and friends would've lived the rest of their lives thinking their kid was a dead drug dealer, and that kids legacy would've been tarnished forever. Bliss is truly evil, sick in the head, etc., and he's committed acts that any thinking person should cut him off permanently. Yeah I know some will say "Norm is old and loyal, yadda yadda yadda," but Bliss' actions trump loyalty, 3rd chances, and any opportunity for redemption. That guy is sick.

  7. blergoyen - totally agree with your assessment. Bliss is the worst kind of bad guy because he wraps himself up in "God". The fact that this guy is getting back in to coaching just blows my mind.

Haven't agreed with all the critics of The Old Grey Wolf and I still don't. I think he's just as engaged as ever. I love The Wolf. He and Jr are my favorites. I do think he gets pushed aside by The Snake and The Black Cloud but I still listen to The Hardline and enjoy it....except when they talk Cowboys.

    Stay hard.

  8. blergoyen, I think at least part, if not the greater part or the whole of, Norm's loyalty to Bliss lies in his commitment to his (Norm's) Christian ethos. That is, hate the sins, love the sinner/human made in the image of/created by, God. Agree or disagree, I think that's where he's coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I don't recall hearing the golf show promoted and I don't think the Ticket did an email alert.

If they want to talk golf, that's fine with me. But it is an automatic punchout.

    ReplyDelete
  10. BAD radio with Charles Haley was great today, as was Lee Trevino on with Norm. I often punch out on guests but these two were good.

    ReplyDelete
  11. blergoyen -

Agree 110%. I was very frustrated. Norm says he's all about second chances but not eight like Josh Brent and Greg Hardy.

Umm, Josh and and Greg may be at three, maybe; Bliss have ruined programs at more schools than I can count on one hand.

Norm understands why someone would hire Bliss, an old white bible-thumper coach to give the coach a "second" chance, but has no room in his heart for athletes -- either those who would get a second chance to play or those now who will end up on probation when Bliss cheats and lies again.

    Nauseating. Utterly nauseating.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Kinda like how David Boren is all for second chances for football players who beat their girlfriends into unconsciousness but not for drunk frat boys who use the N word and beat up no one.

    Double standards are everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Anonymous Thufir_Hawat
I think you misheard what Norm said. He agreed that Bliss getting hired might not be fair to others who need a chance. He also said he completely understood those who don't buy Bliss's apologies and whatnot.

Bliss has screwed up two schools for certain; the high school incident while probably all on him, there remains the possibility it wasn't.

Curious: Why does Bliss's color matter? If he were Asian or Hispanic and did the same things, would his race/pigmentation somehow soften or even change your stance?

  14. Listen to the 2004 Community quick hits that is currently a front page link on the Unticket and for all of those that thought Corby was better in past and is now unlistenable this is a real ear opening experience. He is much better and impactful now than he was 11 years ago. Though he was embarrassingly bad in that little decade old snapshot compared to now. I am in the minority but I think older more experienced Corby offers frequent radio gold.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @8:42, I'm not trying to jump back into the THL bashing frenzy, but listen to any of the other 2004 segments out there featuring the Hardline and you'll hear a dramatic difference in the rest of the show. Corby's CQH contribution might be better, but his overall presence on the show brings it down a notch. I listened to the one that gave us the Blockbuster e-brake just to hear the e-brake itself but stuck around for the rest of it when it struck me how good an engaged Rhines and a sober and interested Greggo could be. There was plenty of jackassery back then, but the overall tone of the show was better, in my opinion. Corby can be great and can bring a whole lot to the showgram, but I think he's better in small doses than as a full-timer.

  16. First of all, let me say I don't give a rip about the tickers. If they're 10/30/50 or not really doesn't matter to me, but I don't get the logic of twice per hour. The station takes 3 breaks per hour. In my mind, your choices are 3 tickers, 0 tickers or 1 at the top of the hour. Anything else doesn't really make sense. Sometimes there will be traffic then a ticker then a liner then the hosts, sometimes there will be no traffic, no ticker and directly to the hosts. I don't get it. No I'm not obsessive/compulsive. Okay, maybe a little.

Bliss paid players at SMU, including Jon Koncak who admitted receiving money from Bliss directly. Bliss (and the program) only got off because the NCAA did not want to pile on with the then-pending football death penalty. He certainly ran away to NM ahead of the posse.

Then Baylor (paying players, not reporting failed drug tests, slander of a dead student), runs away from the CBA of all places, and booted out of high school (!) for two years (again, recruiting violations, this time forging signatures, in less than 90 days on the job).

SMU, Baylor, Allen Academy: all "lack of institutional control;" all on his watch.

Norm might have said something about recognizing people not interested in Bliss's latest quest for redemption, but Norm certainly is willing to give another chance to a proven, admitted, and heretofore unrepentant liar and cheater. I just can't get that to true up with his disdain for athletes.

Maybe race is not a deciding factor, but the players he is writing off are all one color; Norm and old thumper Bliss is another. So maybe three things in common. Norm does differ in that he is not a complete scumbag.

  18. If anyone from the Unticket is reading this, thanks for all of the podcast\media you put up. I'm curious why the individual segments only go back to 2004 though? I will say that I downloaded the Rotten Radio mp3 (I can remember it used to be on instead of commercials when streaming back in the day) and it's over 6 hours of old school greatness. Some of that is probably guaranteed to be pre-2004.

  19. BADD Radio officially unlistenable. Just terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, I think one ticker per hour is ideal and I think we're heading for that eventually.

Also, 5 voices on Bad Radio has become too much. It was ok when it was Bob, Dan and Donnie and Tom/Jake would pop on occasionally. Now every segment you get Jake and TC lobbing grenades and its a hard listen at time. This is a show that has never had a great flow (long winded Bob and over talker Dan) this is not an improvement. And this is coming from someone whose favorite show WAS BaD Radio.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Why do they continue to do traffic? Is there really any practical use to it these days? Seems to me that that is a plum ripe for the picking. They can have another 1-2 minutes for commercials.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Show of hands. How many stick around during what I would assume is prime listening time to hear Corby talk golf?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm getting a little tired of Atheist views from Danny, and now Corby throws out some point of views that somewhat follow that. When they were talking about births not being a miracle (around 6:25 Thursday). I'm a Christian, but am not going to push my views down your throat. It would be nice if they never talk religion because there are so many views they're bound to push someone's buttons. I'm pretty sure that's what Corby does to generate ratings, throw out grenades and see how much of a jerk he can come off as. Unless...he really is the douchbag that he appears to be. I think it's an act though.

  24. Golf listener. If there was any promotion of the Masters Preview I missed it. I'd like to see them do the same for the other majors and our local stops as well. Rick Arnett and Rosen Rosen are part of my Saturday mornings and I am not much of a golfer. I do like the insidery feel of the Tee Box particularly when they go at the PGA for stupidity and backasswardness. I am sorry I missed the preview.

Double standards abound. That's how the world is today sports. Would the Kentucky player's commentary been treated the same if he were another color? Hardly. Does Norm cut Dave Bliss more slack than he does Greg Hardy or Josh Brent? Maybe. He certainly is ready to forgive Bliss and ban the other two. Junez at least is consistent in his banning of all three. Count me among those willing to give them all another chance. Note I said another, not second or sixteenth, how many times does that Good Book say we are supposed to forgive? Something about seventy times seven. Yeah, well the NFL is not going to go that far. The college world will forgive Dave Bliss but not so much the guy that blew the whistle on him. It isn't right, but exactly what are we supposed to do about it?

Remind me what Billy Clyde Gillespie did at Kentucky that got him run out of town? Has he ever resurfaced?

  25. I'm departing from my usual policy of editing comments for this one. I almost bounced this one from Anonymous who posted around 8:55 for noncompliant content but thought there were some good points relating to the Dave Bliss/Norm controversy. I've edited freely. The comment follows:

    ==========

I too heard Jr.'s thoughts on the subject.

Norm didn't deny Bliss acted abominably. Neither did he soft pedal Bliss's actions.

[Respecting Norm's attitude towards athletes:] You mean the African-American Charles Haley? The same man who was detested by the media? The same nan that Norm befriended long before it was evident that Haley was going to get into the HoF? Or do you mean Michael Irvin? Who to this day says Norm is one of the only members of the media who, back in Irvin's heyday of deceit and debauchery, refused to write him off? The list is long.

Norm might be a lo things. Some annoying, some even hypocritical. This isn't one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm probably worse than most in perpetuating the same old topics, and as controversial as the subject has been, I'm glad Norm has got this community talking about something other than the regular topics.

Did anyone else hear Gordo doing his man-on-the-street at TMS a few minutes ago? His comment to one woman claiming she needed to go to the bathroom made me sneeze coffee on my keyboard. "Oh, I better go position myself in front of the peep hole." Had he pursued a different career 20yrs ago, I seriously think the Ticket would look drastically different today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Regarding tickers, I understand they were innovative at one time, certainly something that differentiated the Ticket when the station was new. And I'm fine with having them, but I could sure do without the quotes from last night's game, typically from a coach or player, because they rarely add any value. they are often generic ("We just have to execute better. If we execute, the results will take care of themselves") or they say exactly the same thing the Ticker guy just said before he introduced said audio.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Speaking of TMS, could the promotions department have found anyone less interested in the race than Corby? From his comments yesterday he is treating this like a big JO session. Hopefully Norm and Rich will put a bug in his ear and tell him the teams will not put up with any jackassery from him when the race starts.

  29. How many hosts turned down the gig before Corby took it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Tyler Seguin is in Lindy Ruff's dog house for being late to practice Friday. Could have something to do with the rescheduling of his show with Bob and Dan?

  31. GREAT Tee Box this morning with Rick Arnett and Corby Davidson.

Intrinsically interesting, even if you know little about golf (yours truly) or care anything about the Masters (ditto).

Nothing to do with BaD. He was at a local watering hole amongst other places with both Benn brothers, Eakin, and Demers until closing time the night before. I think you can put together the puzzle from there...

I know this because I was at the establishment they closed. Hint: it's the new locale (under a new name, same ownership) for an old favorite of both Mavs (especially Dirk back in his younger party days) and Stars.
