Drydock Tock + Happy Birthday to MTC

Let's have some.

I'll start.  I was glad to hear The Shake Joint in the ayem, but was sorry to think that I would not have the pleasure of hearing Jake on with Dan McDowell.

I was in error.  I was able to tune in midday yesterday, and there they were.

I like Bob, I like Dan, and I like BaD, but BaD bogs, boy does it bog.  But Jake and Dan do not bog.  Jake keeps things moving and maybe I'm just imagining this, but it seems to me that Dan steps his game up with this pairing.

Gotta run.  Gimme some drydock thoughts.

ALSO:  Please keep a good thought for this My Ticket Confession internet online website, which is celebrating its ninth anniversary.  Yep, Your Plainsman went live on June 30, 2009, with none other than that Nice Young Michael Gruber as its first non-test commenter (although not on the first article, as I recall).  Hope to keep this joint going for awhile longer.  Thanks to all readers and those of you who take the time to comment.  Hope to meet some of you someday.

  1. I always liked TSJ but it's nowhere near The Gentle Ones. It's a decent listen. It's obvious they struggle to come up with segments but that's not surprising considering their other obligations on the station. I would rather them dry dock completely than try to maintain a fake consecutive show count like BaD.

It's clear that the old guard knows that Jake is clean on their heels. They pay him due respect. He's not bashful to dress down Dan or Corby which is necessary more than it should be. He's clearly replaced Donnie Doo Doo as the hardest working on the Ticket. I know it's not dry dock related but I like the soccer guy replacing Danny. He does a solid job on the WC stuff too. I hope the producer with the license plate BLKCLD gets better soon.

    P.S. I liked Juan Fahy

  2. Like Jake in any capacity except for Kanye album review segments. Autotuned computer music? I don't get it. Get off my lawn.

  3. Jake and Sean did a segment this morning in which Jake confessed his love for contemporary pop and other confections ("Armageddon" -- greatest movie ever) and his candid lack of appreciation for art of the past. I don't agree with his tastes, but at least he's not trying to put one over on you as a fake sophisticate. He likes what he likes, he doesn't what he doesn't, and there you go. Our tastes aren't the same, but I like that quality in a host.

  4. I heard that segment this morning. It was kind of a continuation of the American Pie review that was done yesterday. I guess the review of a Kanye album is the same as a movie review, but not quite. Every movie is different. Kanye is one artist with the same sound (at least to me, which I admit is a limited view). Am I wrong, guys?

  5. So McCartney had to be on Carpool Karaoke for music expert Corby to figure out what a big deal he is?

  6. I have to agree with The Plainsman here. I like Sean for the most part but I can only handle Jake in small doses. Call me old man yelling at clouds but he wears on me for some reason.
I have grown to enjoy Dan over the years, maybe someday Jake will grow on me too. I, however, can not listen to BaD without Bob riding heard on Dan. Ready for some Boom in Da House and might even like to hear a bit of Black and Quack.

My biggest complaint about Drydock since the Cumulus takeover is there is no cross-pollination from the other stations in the cluster. Hawkeye would be a shoo-in for sure. He gets it. Hal Jay, from WBAP, with the Hardline would be a scream. With his longtime ties to TCU and his tenure in D/FW radio, it would be gold. Hell, I would love to hear Steve Lamb's HSO's on sports/politics/life in the Ticket environment. I guess contractual considerations might figure into this.
Would Randy Galloway or Kevin McCarthy consider a one off if ask? Gallow was the butt of many a bit over the years and McCarthy was/is a Dallas broadcast legend and former voice of the Mavericks. Seems to me there are other options than just Doocey and Rads.

  7. Gopher, thanks. Some noteworthy thinking there.

I actually don't limit my Jake liking to small doses. I think he's a pretty easy listen over the longer haul. He's not in my demo, I frequently disagree with him, and he can take some extreme sportsy positions, but he has a way of making his views entertaining and not snotty, and I don't find him condescending to hosts or co-hosts. He was formerly more snotty, leading to the Buzz Aldrin/Space = SG albatross that he still has to drag around -- but he's toned that down a lot and now sounds like Dylan the Finally-Realized-He's-Not-That-Far-from-Middle-Age Guy.

  8. Am I the only one who would rather the hosts don't devote entire segments to discussion of the math involved in NBA free agency? 15 straight minutes of "Team X can free up $13.1 million if they do a sign and trade with Player X, but they can have $30 million available if Player Y exercises his max option blah blah blah" is about 14 too many. Bob, I'm especially talking to you, but not just you.

  9. 726, I agree it's not interesting and I don't like it either, but as long as leagues think there is value in parity -- I don't, I think it's a contributing factor to the mediocrity we see across all sports, but that's a topic for another blog -- and impose what are in effect restrictions on compensation (wage control), managing the cap properly (and with luck) is a huge component of a team's ability to compete at a championship level. You've got to talk about it.

Fans have wised up. You used to be able to hear sports-talk guys groan when idiots would call in and say "why don't [TEAM] go get [GREAT PLAYER], management sucks!" Sometimes management does suck, but the cap means their options are limited. If you don't talk about the cap and other player-movement rules, you're omitting a significant part of team strategy.

  10. Happy birfday to MTC. See amendment to post.

  11. Agree with 7:26. Don’t care a whit about the math discussions. I used to read every article in SI when I’d get the weekly. Now I just blow by any articles on sabermetrics. Give me human element stories. If a team can’t make a particular trade or sign a certain player, just say it’s due to the math, and move on.

  12. It's just part of the over-analysis of sports. Makes everybody look fake smart.

    "Running downhill"

    "Vertical game"

    "Running in space"

  13. I think 7:26 and P-snoot bring up great points.

For the casual fan, the station needs to maintain a fine balance between what is important and pointless minutiae. It is not the fan's job to dissect each and every player's contract and who they can bring in or not. Just show me the baby.

The hardcore nerds will always be into the numbers. I don't know and I don't care. I'm just a casual fan that wants to watch games to pass the time. Salary caps - don't care. Luxury tax - don't care. Bird rights - don't care.

That being said, where does sports talk go from here. It used to be all about bitching and complaining and spending money and getting some pitching in here.

  14. Interesting "friendship" talk on Shake Joint this morning.

  15. Plainsman - thanks so much for hosting this forum for the P-1. I don't post often but read it just about every day. I'm sure there are many lurkers like myself who appreciate it. Happy Birthday to MTC and may there be many more!

  16. You're welcome. Reddit is also very good but there's a little different flavor here, I think. And of course, the redheads to welcome you.

  17. Julie Dobbs in as the permanent midday ticker guy

    ReplyDelete
  18. Julie in as permanent replacement for TC. I bet that ruffled a few feathers. How did Justin get passed over for this gig? I assume he applied for it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Good for Julie. I'd bet a substantial amount that Justin sees himself as host material, and only host material. And unlike most of the rest of the JV, he has a, no pun intended, golden parachute. In short, he can afford to hang about and wait.

  20. Have we seen the last of Same Hale? He was handling these duties.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm guessing Sam Hale will still be around on the weekends.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dan and Justin the next couple of days...big for Monty

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jesus F'n Christ - Is that Joe Leschi that keeps jumping interrupting Rhynes and Donny? I feel like Rhynes is going to start the 5,4,3 countdown any moment on him.

  24. Plainsman, Congratulations and well done! What you do is much appreciated, especially when you consider that it's "volunteer" work. There is such a nasty vibe around these parts, political and otherwise. You are to be commended for somehow keeping a friendly and professional tone on here. Thank You!!!

  26. Congratulations, Plainsman! Your launch date is not long before I became a listener. I rarely comment here, but I keep a browser tab always open to the latest post just so I can reload during the day and read the comments.

And the redheads, Oh the REDHEADS! Keep them coming! Wait, I mean Keep It Up! No, wait...oh well...

  27. Anyone watching the Greggo / Corby meltdown on Twitter? Gordo is RTing a lot of it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Lucky Jim

Yes, it was quite a day. Greggo went scorched earth on both Gordon and Corby and then tried to fall back to the "just kidding" defense.

  29. P-Man,

You will be happy to know you have science on your side.

  30. RE: The random Twitter war between Greggo and Cubro and Gordo

    1) Greggo was (and still is) a mess. It was right for the Ticket to clean up that mess

    2) It created a vacuum that gave Corby an opportunity. Good for him. Bad for the show

    3) I'm a Gordo fan but understand that he can only be taken in short stints by some

    4) Support Gordo sticking up for the Snake because (See #1)

    5) Fireworks day Rotten Radio is the only can't miss day of the year other than White Elephant Day.

  31. She's been on the job for less than a week and there have already been 500 #metoo jokes aimed at Julie the ticker girl. Not to be overly sensitive or PC guy, but... I hope the boys tread a little lighter with the "whoa look a hot chick is employed here now" humor. Especially Dan, which is a bit surprising to me considering he's surrounded by nothing but girls in his home life.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Are you unfamiliar with the Dan McDowell Campound Joke Series?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm not sure how she's going to end up fitting in chemistry-wise, but Julie's tickers are very good. She's clearly got something.

    ReplyDelete
  34. No WTDS today so I button pushed my way to the Fan. Ben and Skin were conversing about baseball movies and in the span of just a few minutes they issued "you just lost a listener" twice. So is this a pilfering of Ticket shtick or does that get a pass for being in the public domain?

They also issued "we're up against it" going into a break.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hard to say with them because they were on The Ticket for a handful of years. They had a Saturday show during what is now Cirque du Sirois.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jake is good with everyone except Sean. With other hosts, there's more give and take. With Sean, he doesn't seem to care...interrupts him, ignores him, etc. It's too bad, because Jake is very talented, and is obviously the future of the station. He's in a position to be generous and gracious. I'd like to see more of that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Where’s Greggo?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jake is absolutely a star in the making. I hope his chance comes on the Ticket but either way I dont see him in any sort of Tier 2 role much past another year. My out of the box thinking is that Bob will be the first to bolt as he partners with Troy Aikman after next year to move into the front office of an NFL team. My bet is Jake replaces Bob.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It took all but one Gordo Corner to wish he'd go back on vacation. Permanently.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Does P-Man synchronize drydock time with THL?

    ReplyDelete
  41. My god that was the worst 8:40 bit ever. There isn't a single listener that wants to get to know Sam Hale. From a broadcasting standpoint, he makes TC sound like Bob Costas.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought his old girlfriend story was . . . interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I didn't hear the 8:40 bit, but I heard the Tickers. Junior has made note of his lightning delivery. I don't think that's the problem. His actual cadence isn't so speedy; it's that he runs words together and slurs phrases, which gives the impression of a blazing delivery when it's really just herky-jerky, Ticker-speed speech interrupted with syllables and word pairs and triplets smooshed into unfamiliarity. I actually found a fair amount of each sentence hard to understand.

I don't have an issue with his Ticker composition, or even with Samuel himself (his recent trial notwithstanding) but man -- he's a challenge to decipher.

Man's got some Killer broadcast mannerisms in him.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Is there any way to get the Hardline 2 more weeks off? This show sucks! And who's that 3rd wheel? His fake laugh is worse than Corby.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Ticket has been nominated for another Marconi, but this time it's for Major Market Station, regardless of format.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Who else heard the flat earth truther this morning? It was great radio, even if they were bouncing all over the place for two segments. I've also spent the last several hours trying to understand basic flat earth principles, but alas I can't wrap my head around it (see what I did there??? no...ok).

    ReplyDelete
  47. He was the complete package. Flat earther. 9/11 truther. Staged moon landings.

Junior needs to have him as a guess for his next coast to coast.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Agreeing with both previous comments. Was interesting. And it got me into a flat earth wormhole. Pretty sure that guy's facts were coming almost entirely from a documentary called "the truth in Plane sight" found on youtube, which happened to hit on the very same random combo of famous conspiracies that he cited. Really wish the Musers would bring him back and ask him to respond to points like these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcfWmUl71Jk.

  49. I have really enjoyed the Dingoo free presentation. The only things worse than the Corby/Danny combo are CJ Nitkowski and Sean Bass.
