On the Run with Dan and Mike

I caught a fair bit of the Dan McDowell-Mike Sirois midday presentation today in the car and thought it was pretty good.

I was going to write a compare-and-contrast thing about Dan and Bob, on the one hand, and Dan and Other People, on the other, but I'm in between commitments here and expected elsewhere soon.

Also, I'm uncertain what I think about that topic.

Maybe I'll come back to this later and jot down a few thoughts on the enigmatic chemical ingredient that is Dan McDowell.

Or maybe you guys can write it for me.

Dan and Mike, it's not important that you have hair; it's only important that I have hair.

  1. I'm not a fan of Dan. Never have been. Nothing personal...just never thought that anything he ever said was funny. I never hear anything funny from anything on the air except from 5:30-10:00 and that's not just from Gordo. All of the yuck monkeys rely on low-hanging, uncomfortable humor. When they wade into sports, they get exposed.

Another note. I don't get much listening time post lunch because I'm on EST. I hear more than my fair share of PSAs listening to 0430 CST Ticket. Has anyone heard the Rosegarden-level mispronunciation of "plethora" and "innovation" on the recent ones? I don't even remember what they're talking about but ple-THOR-a and in-NO-va-tion makes me laugh every time. How do these sneak into a top 5 market?

but Gordon is the only yuck monkey on the station

  3. That was Corby's role until an unfortunate HR situation bumped him into his current spot, one he is constantly and woefully unprepared for. Dan has never been marketed as anything but a comedic interlude to Bob's over the top sports analyses. I stand by my comment on all three.

  4. He was unprepared for yuck monkey too!

  7. I don't like listening to Dan much when he's with someone other than Bob. They compliment each other well, so to answer your question: I enjoy listening to BAD proper.

I will also say what I have said here in the past: Bob and Dan have slight variations of the most annoying accent where a short O is pronounced like a short A, and a long I is pronounced like a long A.

Therefore, "dollars" sounds like "dallers" when it comes out of Bob or Dan's mouths. "Excited" becomes "exated". I find their Midwestern accents annoying, and it has not gotten any more tolerable over the years. But despite that, I like their work when they are together.

  9. Ah, so James has removed ellislives's comment. Gee, how does that happen? Nothing kookier than a commenter commenting on his\her own comments.

  10. I'm surprised there have been no mentions of today's 8:40 bit. SeaBass waded into Deep Throat Informant territory and delivered THE WORST 8:40 BIT EVER. Retire the trophy.

    1. Gagree the 8:40 non gordo bit is usually bad. The way to mimic gordon keith is to act the complete a-hole towards your coworkers.

  11. I find the musers to be by FAR the most low hanging fruit/uncomfortable humor schtick. sometimes funny but too often they are over the top racist/homophobic/small minded humor. maybe it appeals to his audience but not me.

So you've come and posted to a website whose explicit purpose is to provide a forum for criticism and discussion of a radio station. And your play is to tell everyone to stop providing discussion and criticism of that radio station?

    Drip...

That's the sound of the irony in your comment.

  14. I think Dan is the funniest guy on the station, hands down. He has the sharpest and quickest wit and he doesn’t delve into a bunch of annoying bits like Gordo.

  15. I removed my first two attempts at comments because of typos. ellislives was just being funny. I didn't remove any of ellislives' comments, only my own. I don't have the ability to remove anyone's but my own. But you knew that. :)

That brought a flashback to the days of Remove Rowdy vs I like Grubes discussion boards. Let's not go there again.

  17. That should be Grubes is our leader, an offshoot from the Bobanddan.com discussion board.

In addition not sure how on air talent can continue to mispronounce Nevada, Gonzaga, Pajama-Gram (in promos).

COMPLETLY agree about BaD’s terrible midwestern accents. They’ve been here 20 plus years yet Bob still sounds like he just left the family Wisconsin dairy farm. I can tolerate them except when they do their live spots where they spiff advertisers. There is something about Bobs accent in describing Rosa’s southwestern fare that’s like nails on chalkboard.

    1. Sadly the midwestern accent is the norm in dfw. I remember being made fun of for my texas accent (warsh and such)

  20. Jake suspended!

    (from twitter)

  21. I scrolled through Twitter to see if I could piece together why Jake got booted from the site. Failed.

T.C. Fleming tweeted that Jake has not opened a new account and any account purporting to be him is fake.

I'm on the road and not able to stream right now. I assume some show will talk about this, so I won't burn my sources on this one unless it's radio silence on the shows.

    Let us know.

  22. I should add that Jake continues to be welcome on THIS site to communicate his always trenchant views.

  24. I am a big fan of Dan. I love his cynicism. I do think he is funny, but to each his own. It works.

I have also softened quite a bit on Sean Bass. Probably has a lot to do with the fact that he has pulled back the political whining. That seems to be something the whole station has done, and I for one appreciate it.

I commend SeaBass for his 8:40 bits. That has to be hard to pull off.

  25. Plainsman, they have spent plenty of time talking about Jake's suspension on the radio. If you haven't been caught up yet, here's the oversimplified explanation: Randy Rogers (yes, the musician), tweeted a challenge to Steph Curry about his assertion that the moon landing was faked. Randy apparently know a man who walked on the moon and is a war veteran, so Randy took offense to someone calling a veteran a faker.

Jake retweeted Randy's challenge to Steph ("come say it to my veteran friend's face") and added "and I will kill you". My quotes are paraphrased.

Anyway, twitter took issue with Jake's perceived threat on Curry's life. Jake says he expects his account to be reinstated, but he may have created a new account in case.

Again, this is oversimplified. Lots of details are missing in my little response here, but now you have the gist.

  26. First Dr. Salmon is gone. And now George Dejohn himself? Apparently will announce the end of the train station fitness show in last segment of the program this morning.

  27. So in the last week, we’ve had a ticket host death and a ticket host hang it up. And neither one was Norm!

  28. I missed DiGianni. Did he give a bullet pointed list of reasons?

  29. He didnt have enough time to give a bullet pointed list.
We will never hear from Dr. Salmon again.

  30. The whole Curry imbroglio was a 20 second throw away obvious trolling of Kyrie Irving. He came out and said he believes we landed on moon. Of course good ole boy red dirt country guy Randy Rodgers cant allow someone to express an opinion (even if tongue in cheek) without invoking veterans, apple pie and baby jesus. Jake was simply poking fun at Randy Rogers and got suspended.

  31. Sometimes the smart play is to not get involved. Perhaps Jake's learned a lesson here... Though, with the countless Twitter gone wrong oops I effed up my career\life stories he reports on...on a weekly basis....you'd think he'd have figured that out already. You'd think.

Well, how 'bout that? I doubted that Dample ever tuned in.
