I'm Thinking of Requiring Confessors to Adopt Names (i.e., No More Anonymous)

  1. Fine. I call dibs on The Plainsman

  3. And I'll be MyTicketConfessor.

So, Psnap, where's that info you have that you haven't the time to get around to but keep leaving comments, finding new reds, and whatnot? Interested in whatcha got, pal.

  4. I'm putting that idea out there for public comment. The idea would be for everyone posting here to adopt a name. The comments are getting almost impossible to follow, since anonymi seem never to have gotten the message that they are, in fact, anonymous and can't be identified for the always-civilized responses of others.

I can't prove this, but I'm guessing that requiring the adoption of names will reduce the flaming and assholery.

Of course, I couldn't force people not to attempt to post under someone else's name, but Confessors could do that now. It does happen, but only very, very rarely.

Under this rule, anonymous comments would be deleted. (I can't eliminate Anonymous as a choice.)

    Couple more things:

    (1) I do slip a strawberry blonde in from time to time, but the suggestion from the last thread was a good one.

    (2) There is no (2).

    (3) DON'T FUCKING LECTURE ME IN A STERN, SMUG, DISMSISSIVE TONE ON HOW TO RUN THIS BLOG, WHEN TO POST, WHAT TO POST ABOUT, WHO TO DELETE, OR HOW MUCH TIME TO ALLOCATE TO BRINGING YOU BASTARDS QUALITY TICKET JOURNALISM. AND I'LL TEASE YOU ANYTIME I GODDAM WILL PLEASE AND TAKE MY OWN GODDAM SWEET TIME ABOUT DISCLOSING THE STUFF THAT COMES TO MY ATTENTION. OR I'LL TEASE IT AND THEN FUCKING SIT ON IT FORFUCKINGEVER IF IT PLEASES MY ASS TO FUCKING DO SO. Y'ALL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I DO FOR A LIVING, WHAT MY OTHER COMMITMENTS ARE, AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH I CAN GRAB SOME TIME TO WRITE STUFF, AND MONITOR YOUR COMMENTS, WHICH ITSELF TAKES A LOT, AND I MEAN ONE HELL OF A FUCKING SHITLOAD OF TIME, ESPECIALLY THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.

THE TIDBIT IN QUESTION THAT WILL BE COMING UP AT A GODDAM TIME OF MY CHOOSING IS COMPLEX AND TECHNICAL. BUT IT'S ONLY A FUCKING TIDBIT. SOME OF YOU WILL READ IT AND GO, WHAT WAS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? AND YOU'LL BE RIGHT. BUT SOMETIMES I CAN KNOCK OFF AN ITEM IN A FEW MINUTES, SOMETIMES IT TAKES ME TWO HOURS, AND IT DOESN'T ALWAYS DEPEND ON HOW SIGNIFICANT THE ITEMS IN QUESTION IS IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS.

SO THOSE OF YOU DISSATISFIED THAT I HAVEN'T PUKED UP THIS TIDBIT TO DATE, GO DIRECTLY TO HELL. I'VE BEEN SLINGING THIS PIECE OF SHIT BLOG SINCE 2009 AND IT'S TAKEN UP MORE OF MY BRIEF TIME ON THIS GODFORSAKEN ROCK THAN ANY FUCKING SPORTS/GUY TALK RADIO STATION HAS A RIGHT TO CLAIM AND I'VE LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF IT, AND I'VE LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF 97% OF YOU. I'VE SEEN A HALF DOZEN OTHER "TICKET BLOGS" COME AND GO AFTER JUST A FEW POSTS, AND I'VE LONG THOUGHT ABOUT CLOSING UP SHOP MYSELF. BUT I SLOG ON BECAUSE I ENJOY IT AND ENJOY THE DIALOGUE WITH RESPONSIBLE CONFESSORS WHO ARE NOT COCKSUCKERS.

I HAVEN'T GONE TO SUBSTACK OR TRIED TO MONETIZE IT IN ANY WAY. I HAVEN'T REQUIRED COMMENTERS TO BE MEMBERS OF GOOGLE OR OF THIS BLOG.

YOU CAN'T DO THIS KIND OF THING FOR THIS LONG AND NOT HAVE A PRETTY THICK SKIN ABOUT CRITICISM, AND I RARELY DELETE IT. I DIDN'T DELETE THE LECTURES FROM THE LAST THREAD. BUT JESUS CHRIST, BEFORE SOME COCKSUCKER DECIDES TO UNLOAD ON ME FOR NOT DELIVERING INFORMATION AT A TIME OF HIS CHOOSING, I URGE HIM TO TAKE A DEEP FUCKING BREATH AND DIAL UP REDDIT OR TWITTER OR SOME OTHER JOINT IF HE DOESN'T LIKE THE EDITORIAL CHOICES HERE.

AND NO -- THE INFO I NEED TO EXPLAIN (IF I DON'T SKIP THE THING ENTIRELY, WHICH I MAY) WILL TAKE A SHITLOAD MORE TIME THAN THIS ONE DID.

As a famous cinematic lecturer once said: "All right now you sons-of-bitches, you know how I feel."

  18. jfc—it’s your blog of course but going China on the commenters is a little far. You weren’t putting your nuts on the line saying D&J weren’t signing with TF. Most people here could have posted that because it’s common sense with their non compete.
If that info was from your source, i’d get another source to corroborate in the future as the tea leaves look to D&J starting at TF in 2024. Do I have a source? Nah, it’s common sense and with TF jumbling their lineup to see who will pull better ratings before D&J join, it makes the most sense. Don’t get thin skinned about it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If I may suggest, and you've done this before, perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to close all comment sections for a few days, barring breaking news. Maybe post up an official statement saying from this point forward all commens must have a name attached, wait a few days or even a week (again, depending on any news that might come down), and then open shop. That would hopefully clean house and clear out some or most of the trolls and folks who usually inhabit other interweb abodes, and get MTC back to its usual (mostly) genteel self. Just a suggestion.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Shoopie, my fury has nothing to do with retracting my "news" about them not going to the Freak. My source had pretty good reason for believing it to be true -- I mean, real good. Turns out his own source was not . . . honest. So in response to Surly's request, I did take it back.

No, my yelling was in response to some snotty BS by a 2-3 guys in the last thread calling me out for not rushing to do an entry on some additional -- obviously not breaking -- information that had come to my attention.

My schedule has me out of town again starting Wednesday, so if I don't get to it tomorrow (no breath-holding, please), it won't be until next week sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 00110011, I'm considering how to introduce this so that everyone has fair notice. I'll need to remind everyone with every posting, which is not a problem, but there have to be some other rules, too -- for example, not misleadingly calling yourself a name that is misleadingly close to some other name or some actual person. I'm hoping for some originality to add to the fun.

I don't know if I'll shut down for a few days, but I do want to mull over how to introduce it. I think it will make for a more enjoyable and easier back-and-forth among the fine Confessor cohort.

  30. After listening to the Dumb Zone….
    1. MUCH better flow than IJB. I actually liked TC’s tenure on TT, but don’t find his partnership with Jake as good as HZ.
    2. Have my doubts about the interest in a “time limited” podcast. “News” segments, to me, work best in close proximity to the event under normal circumstances. Thinking the late night shows or even SNL commentary, not the podcast setup they propose.
    3. Is their greatest draw their ability to pull back the curtain? Like the Greggo Ryhner reunion…once that’s done…the what ifs lose strength.
Dan and Jake make for good co-hosts. Perhaps they will figure out how to create a podcast that transcends TT identity. They will need to-hoping for their success.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I’m about halfway through. Sounds like a couple of guys who are flying by the seat of their pants trying to monetize a podcast but know they’ve got a backup in case it falls flat. Bold strategy Cotton.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I got through The Ticket section....and I'm done.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "There are options opening up and we don't know where we're going to take it."

--Dan McDowell, 3 minutes in the first post Ticket podcast.

And there ya go, The Narrative begins. As many others have said, they will be on TF the day after their NCs expire.

4 shows per week, 1 free and 3 behind a paywall. Yeah, that's going to keep the lights on. The bullsh is so thick, it's damn near insulting.

That wasn't entertaining. Yes, it's the first pod. But you're also dealing with two Varsity Ticket hosts. They should be better than this without trying. Dan without a producer and firm boundaries is a beatdown. As someone else already said, once they juice as been squeezed from TT grapefruit, which will take all but 1-2 pods, then what?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I listened to the whole pod, I was entertained but am a Dan apologist. It's no Hangzone, but I don't expect it to be at this point. Seems to me that the non-compete encompasses sports talk as a subject matter, rather than just sports talk on terrestrial radio. My ears didn't hear any mention of sports at all today.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They talked NBA and Zack Martin

    ReplyDelete
  36. Kinda over it all. No interest in D&J, and honestly, no interest in Sean and Ty. That may leave a big hole in my day. I am ok with Donnie, but not for 5 hours. C'Mon Rich, Fix this S

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with you, Scott. I'm now over this whole thing. It'll get interesting again if they go to a competitor. Other than that, I always liked Jake's Mavs and Cowboys talk --even if most of his analyses of players and the teams' season/short-mid-long term trajectories have been rather off the mark-- and Dan's sometimes eyeball test HSOs that bear more truth than not, but that's where it begins and ends. We're all entitled to our opinions and we all have our tastes, but I'll never understand the ride or die with THZ stance. It had/has its moments. Mostly, though, it's OK with a lot of bogging down. No way in Hades will I pay a sub for it.

  38. Sorry, 3:51 is me, 00110011. I have to get accustomed to the new format.

    ReplyDelete
  39. D&J mentioned something about recording 2 hours of them talking about TT. Why not release that first instead of the BS they released today?

    ReplyDelete
  40. New format not in place yet, 00110011, but thanks.

Looks like Confessors are getting with the program in advance. Great, already liking it.

Anonymous posts will not be deleted on this thread, unless they violate the well-known Rules of the Confessional or are otherwise crappy.

    ReplyDelete
  41. DnJ did talk about TT in their maiden pod voyage. Honestly, exactly what else are they going to/can they say? They're not going to talk smack or deride anyone. I'm not sure what people are expecting to take place. What, now DnJ are no longer Ticket employees, they're going to show everyone where the bodies are buried? Unless they decide to do the pod drunk and/or high, I highly doubt anything salacious will come to the fore. And that does appear to be what many are hoping to occur.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dan and Jake should recreate ala Taylor Swift, there own new versions of stuff they crafted while at The Ticket. They can record drops of Kemp Spin, News News News, play a bed of Happy Birthday in background while doing a topical segment of the day called Why Today Actually Sucks. Not sure what Cumulus could do about recreating their own work while not touching any of the actual recorded material from the Ticket. Hell they could redo the entire Moron Dog playlet with Jake doing the part of Dan.

    ReplyDelete
  43. spell check: their not there and Jake doing the part of Bob not Dan. Sorry for any inconvenience I might have caused.

  44. I tried to listen to the podcast. It was too unstructured and rudderless. Formatics are your friend.

    1. Yeah this is the thing. Jake seems better at the free flow podcast than Mr. Dan. He desperately needs formatics. And a producer. And 2-3 more voices to interact with. I’m a stan for Dan and I hope the pods improve. But that was rough

  47. Reddit complains about and mocks MTC. MTC complains about and mocks Reddit. Lots of overlap of people and content. Everyone loves the ticket and has their good days and bad days (as seen above). All of us long-timers here at MTC know the drill - deeper analysis here, some crazy theories, a bit more of a “gentleman’s” discussion but still some salty language and alluring reds, and a dose of self-referential dramatics from our hallowed Plainsman (how many years has he suggested shutting this place down, just to hear feedback on how much people want it to stay - teasing longer posts that never come - celebrating the milestones of the blog at odd times - it’s all part of the vibe of the place).
In the end, we may disagree or get on each other’s nerves but who doesn’t? We can all focus on the good, as Plainsman so perfectly encapsulated so long ago: a home for those who love almost everything about TT and would like to discuss - respectfully and fondly - their thoughts on how (or whether) to eliminate the “almost”

  50. As far as WTDS goes, I doubt Cumulus would do anything. There are several local stations that do birthdays in the morning and some form of WTDS in the afternoon. 58. I made the post and completely stand by it at 7:28. His rant was ridiculous. Didnt think a guy asking for him to post something hes been teasing was over the top. Reading thru all the comments and frankly its Plainsman whos the biggest jerk by far. Never seen anyone rant like a maniac like him. Shameful. Hopefully he will all caps curse me out when during that time he could just post the tidbit of news he had. We all know that wont happen though.

    ReplyDelete
  59. @2:44
Don't worry. No one, including Eye in tha Sky and Plainsman, knows your identity. Eye in tha Sky is being a creep troll. Having said that, perhaps you ought to change your attitude and actually contribute to the conversation, in lieu of leaving comments that will be deleted (Eye in tha Sky is correct on that one) and have zero effect on Plainsman or anyone else. Such comments won't change a thing. Plainsman is rather patient with us and extends a ton of latitude. Everyone is entitled to let off some steam once in a while. If you've never seen someone rant in all caps like that, then you must be new to the internet. Might I suggest you choose a name and thoughtfully engage everyone. I've no doubt you have some interesting things to say, some HSOs that we'd all like to hear.

    ReplyDelete
  60. In the crazy ideas category... Given how unique KTCK is, I wonder if anyone has ever bandied about an attempt to get the band back together in the same way that Rhyner did all of those years ago.

If the talent owned the station, you wouldn't have all of these channel revenue conflicts.

Probably would never work, but it's interesting to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Talent doesn't have enough money, not by a longshot, to purchase and operate a station. They could go the KZEW online route, but that's more of a hobby than a genuine source of income. Cool idea, but 'tis a pipe dream.

Anyone listen to TDZ pod#2? If so, any thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Your definition of patience and mine are different i guess. A site about the Ticket having a host of it wishing people to go to hell and calling them cocksuckers doesnt seem to be constructive and contributing to the conversation in my opinion.I would like to think if another person went at someone like that then their response would be deservedly deleted. Why would i want to contribute anything meaningful when a guy is being a complete asshole? The sanctimonious rant was just sad and pathetic.Good luck dealing with such pleasantries. Im out

  63. Then why are you still here flapping your gums, 548? Seriously. Why? If it's so bad, if Pman is such a d-wad, then what are you doing here? What do you think your incessant, exact same, comment will accomplish?

  65. Thermostat:
Mike R. addressed that many times over the years saying that in today's world, a stand-alone station in a major market is an impossibility. If you could buy a station from one of the corporations it might be a bit easier and starting from scratch would be a nightmare. The biggest hurdle there is getting a frequency from the .gov and then getting the transmitter and tower site built. This is part of the reason Jerry Jones hasn't built his own Cowboys station. It's simply too expensive.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Dude's yelling into the ether over and again and he's calling someone else pathetic. Funny shit.

    ReplyDelete
  67. 00110011 I listened and joined the Patreon today. Unlike others in here who dislike what they've heard so far, I enjoyed the heck out of it. About 75 minutes of freeform noodling with those two was a welcome relief from five hours of sea bass. I love Donnie but can't do Sean in any lengthy dose. I understand why some won't like their schtick. That's fine. But they've already hit a significant number of subscribers. They get to define whatever level of success they'd like and they may just hit it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Apologies if this is posted twice.. I tried to post it while driving and it doesn’t appear to have published. A new 10-12 Saturday show is forthcoming. It’ll be college football centric and hosted by an outsider who has been on the station numerous times, but never as a host. Hopefully the weekend shakeup brings about a M-F radio gig for the hero of the hardwood. We shall see sooner than later.

  69. Gopher is right. Station sales price is generally for 6-8x annual billing. I believe the Ticket's average annual billing is around 15-18Mil a year. At the low end, that would be a 100 million dollar plus price tag. And the reason that there are so many clusters now is that you can amortize costs over multiple stations. That's why ESPN let Cumulus take over KESN. It's pricy to run a stand alone station, every department (sales, engineering, IT, business, traffic, continuity, production, promotions, etc) require someone, and while you may be able to scrimp and cut corners, (your engineer is also your IT guy) there's still a lot of support staff, all paid out of one stations billing. Get 6 stations (like Cumulus, Audacy and iheart) and sure you need more people, but you don't need 6 GM's, 6 sales managers, 6 business managers, and so on. Yeah it's interesting to think about. Cumulus isn't about to sell a cash cow.

  70. Angry Pirate- they're approaching 1700 subscribers, and 11K a month in revenue. Spread that out over a year and that's 132K a year. Let's be generous and say they double that (3400). That's 260K split between 2 guys. Except you need to deduct 30% for income taxes, social security and the like. If their wives work, maybe both can get insurance that way, but that's a cost somebody is paying. Plus the production costs of equipment, maintenance, etc. An accountant to make sure that 30% is paid so they don't need to call Nick Nemeth. There's been a lot of conjecture about what D&J make. Most people think it's at least in the 200K-300K range. They not only need to double their sign ups once (to 6800) , they probably need to double it again (to 13,600)(so gross of 952K) to even come close to netting 300K each. Possible? Yes. Probable, man I just don't know. While they're making listeners pay for their podcasts, iheart is over there giving away full show podcasts for free. Not to mention all the other podcasts they will be competing with. Are there 13 thousand people willing to fork over 70 bucks a year for what they're serving? I don't think so. And they're as popular now as they are ever going to be as they are top of mind, in the news, top of the message board material right now. Once the buzz dies down, where are they going to pick up new listeners from? Because they not only have to reach that 13K mark, they have to keep it there AND grow it if they want a raise, etc. I've thought for a while that this didn't seem to make financial sense too me, this has been a good exercise in theorizing it out.
    C
And 2 other notes before I close- according to this
    https://graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators
13K would put them in the top 50 of Patreon creators. Again, possible, but what do they have that's markedly different from dozens, if not hundreds of other sports station DJ teams around the country. What makes them SO special that 13K will pay 70 bucks a year to hear the same kind of thing they can get on radio or other podcasts basically free.
#2- lets say this is a filler until their non-compete expires. How pissed are those Dumb Zone subscribers going to feel if they go to the Freak and kill the podcast? Or do we really think Iheart is going to let them have what Cumulus wouldn't? Iheart has big names, none of them own the revenue from their podcasts, why do we think D&J will change corporate policy?

    1. I guess my point is those guys get to define success for themselves. I've been there and opted for a lot less money in trade for a very different life. None of us know what they need/want.

    2. @C so what i’m seeing from your numbers is that it would be cheaper for a company to have their own signal and just buy out hosts when contracts expire.

Also, Julie still does her mom game podcast.

Also, looking at patreon creators that have 10k+ subs, I’ve never heard of any of them except Chapo Trap house. It does take a while to gain a following but there are P1s all over the country so why is it out of the question that people outside of DFW wouldnt like them?

      Delete
    3. The ticket is what, 90% male listeners? If the Freak is trying to compete w TT,( and why wouldn’t they, they’re usually the biggest moneymaker in the market,) does “the mom game” really compete with their main product. I’d say no, which is why they let her do I it.
And while there are P1’s all over the country , how many of them are loyal to TT and not THZ? As soon as they announce replacements for Norm and THX, memories will start to fade. If I’m Cowboy fan in distant land, will I stream TT, the fan or grab freak podcasts, all for free, or pay 70 bucks a year to get THZ?

  71. My guess is the that the idea of Jake and Dan wanting their podcast rights was a Hail Mary. They were tired of cumulus or whatever and thought “hell let’s do this and just see what they say.” Knowing they are either going to the freak in a while, or starting a podcast of their own.

If the idea of wanting podcast rights and revenue is pretty much non existent in radio world, why would Dan and Jake make that their requirement?

  72. I said that they would have a dead cat bounce if you will vis-a-vis subs. Problem is, subs come and go like the wind. You have to have a HEALTHY baseline in order to make content creation your f/t gig. When I say f/t gig, I'm talking about making a less than the nationaly avg salary which, I believe, currently sits somewhere around 60-70k per yr. And that's for a single creator, not a duo. For a duo, double the baseline. Regardless of Jake's wife's income, the number they would need to earn (and most importantly) sustain anywhere near their Cumulus salaries, benefits, and insurance packages will be SUBSTANTIAL. As C said, it can be done, but you're talking about the top 1-15% earners in the content creation game. Other than a few outliers, they are unknown outside the DFW area. Even in the DFW area they are belong in the niche category. All of this and we haven't scratched the surface on overhead costs, constantly hustling for and dealing with sponsors (even setting up and executing remotes and all those entail re: time, equipment, etc.), and let's not forget employees and their pay, insurance, etc.

All of the above and so much more leads me to one conclusion: They will either be at a competitor (most likely TF, more about that anon) or will be in a different market altogether, and in all likelihood have gone their separate ways. TF seems by far and away the obvious landing pad.

I listened to Tuesdays and Wednesdays' switcharoo. I really like Danny. I truly do. And I miss him on TT. He is in no way suited for a.m. drive. Sirois, in a situation akin to what he had with The Invasion, would be good. Sirois as a day in/out host is a bust. Once you get past Up For Anything, there's no "there" there. He's great at being the fun uncle that you see a few times a year for a day or two. It's an awkward pairing and an awkward listen. Now, put either on from 7pm - 11pm and let the say what they want, you might have something. Especially in Danny's case. Honestly, it's as if the thing was designed to falter. Again, I hate saying this, because I'm a Danny P1. The Speak Easy. Um. OK. I'm speechless. That is an awful show. It makes the chemistry between Danny and Sirois look Dunham and Miller-esque. That show was not by design constructed solely to falter, but rather, to fail miserably and as quickly as possible. I seriously couldn't believe what I was hearing. What's more, it's a P.M DRIVE SHOW THAT ENDS AT 6PM, YOU KNOW, DURING THE HEIGHT OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC! What the f is that???

Upshot, I'll be stunned if THZ/TDZ isn't going head to head vs. THL in about 5ish months from now. (Aside: The Dumb Zone name alone is telling.)

  73. I’ll make a mild disagreement. Depending on who you count, you have 7-9 hosts on TF. If I’m the new PD, I quickly realize Christina, KT and Julie aren’t tier 1 talents. Heck, Julie admitted she couldn’t continue to come up with material for a daily segment. So those 3 need to be relegated to supporting roles. So of the remainder, Ben and skin weren’t doing well in middays, why would I put them in mornings, AND as a team I probably can’t break them up. Cavanaugh was already failing to draw ratings as the biggest name of him, KT and jd. So Rhyner? Against the musers? lol no and he probably wouldn’t willing go to AMD. So if not willing to eat his contract, my best bet as new PD is 2 ticket expats to try to chip away at D&Ms 17 share.
And if the plan is the Hang zone, in 6 months they eat whatever is left of Rhyner contract, fire Cavanaugh and reunite Dobbs with THZ in pm drive.
They had to do something. And new PD was probably told to try to fix it with what was available before eating current contracts, bringing in new talent, etc. Mike and Danny wouldn’t be my first choices for AMD if I was starting from scratch, but they’re not the worst of what they have

  74. Julie has a separate podcast not exactly related to the freak that she had prior to hosting a show, same with Jake and IBJ. I’m guessing the issue was more with Dan and Jake trying to do a podcast under their ticket show set up in some sense.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Agreed, not only are they not the words they have... they're the best. Which makes for a piss poor, lose-lose situation. I also agree with reuniting Julie with THZ. They championed her so hard after her semi-departure (semi because she did fill ins, worked the Byron Nelson, and odds and ends after she left, right up until a month prior to TF's launch), in retrospect one might even have cause to think they knew they'd eventually be teammates again. (Shining up my tinfoil hat.)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Someone in this thread or on Reddit said they were listening to the podcast and then the Diggs news broke and they went to the ticket lol

    ReplyDelete
  77. That's the thing, CJK5H, at the end of the day, the majority of listeners are seeking refuge from the daily grind and the constant pissing matches of today's world. Which means, they ultimately want sports talk with just enough guy talk mixed in for it not to get too nerdy. I'm not sure Dan and Jake are going to deliver that when either left to their own devices or at a station that says what they want. Despite what Jake claimed in their "exit interview" video, he and Dan are socio-political animals and are very much animated by their socio-politial views. Which is fine. But I'm not sure when Cowboys season rolls around in a few weeks and Dan's not feeling it talking Da Boys 5 days per, just how that's going to go over in the long term. I have a feeling many subs will decide not to renew next month, perhaps even with the intention of coming back, and never return.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Out of town.

Glad to see many of you are adopting names. I think it's already made these lengthy threads easier to follow. I was going to put up a few guidelines on this, but I'm not sure it's necessary.

I'm also glad to see several Confessors who viewed my vulgar yelling in the spirit in which it was intended -- a diverting departure from my typically courteous demurral from even the harshest criticism. Don't get me wrong, I did intend to flay a couple of incredibly snotty and breathtakingly presumptuous anonymi undertaking to lecture me from the prior thread (which I did not delete, nor have I deleted more than a couple of the snotty ripostes here, only deleting the ones who don't tell me to do anything other than fuck off or call me a name).

I hope to get to a post on that item of interest that has come to my attention sometime next week.

Anyway, thanks again for pre-adopting the new name requirement. So far, so good.

  79. No doubt anyone who's been coming here for years knew it was mostly in jest. I got a good laugh out of it.

  80. As it pertains to these separate podcasts outside of the KTCK umbrella (THZ, Gordo on Twitch), I do wonder about the long term viability of terrestrial radio as we know it. If it were as strong as we're lead to believe, then I don't think Tier 1 personalities would need soft landing spots if suddenly Cumulus goes belly up. It was also kinda strange to me all of the recent cross-pollination between all the shows. It seems like this was done to strengthen ratings. And while I understand how that might be a good strategy within the industry to retain listeners, it's also asking more of people who already work a lot to work more. And while I think the hosts are well compensated, they might now have to do more to keep their same salary as sports media as a whole is shrinking.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Terrestrial radio is a dying industry. Fact is fewer people listen to the radio year over year. However many listeners a ratings point equaled 20 years ago, today, that ratings point represents less than half the number of people. Those that do listen, particularly to talk radio, tend to be older.

Certain stations may be doing great; certain companies may be healthy, but it is all relative.

Radio won’t disappear overnight; may never disappear at all. But at some point, the opportunity to make a great, comfortable living, like the musers have, where you are a C list celebrity, will be limited to a handful of people. Not unlike musical chairs.

D&J and their supporters can say what they want, but at the end of the day I believe D&J did what they did because they want a better spot in the radio business and the money that goes with it because the opportunities to get those spots are getting harder to come by.

  81. Just heard a promo for Matt McClearin say this Friday is my last show from Birmingham.

  82. Darren, I'm really trying to follow your sentence, but I'm striking out. Are you saying Birmingham's last day is Friday?

  83. Matt McClearin used to be on The Ticket. He works at a Cumulus station in Birmingham, AL(WJOX).

Decent host, good second voice. Meshes well with the ticket guys. Interested to see what’s what.

  87. McClearin also just announced he is no longer doing his JaM session podcast with JJT.

    No competing interests I guess

    ReplyDelete
  88. He didn't say he was leaving WJOX, just said last from Birmingham.

  89. I'm gonna guess Donovan and Matt, DaM Radio 12-3

    ReplyDelete
  90. He's a fine complementary player, but that's also Donovan.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Well twitter seems to be indicating that he is in fact leaving JOX

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hope it's not McClearin I think he's a beating.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I agree with Surly, I think he pairs with Donovan and Seabass slips back into producer. I’d prefer them 10-12 though and have WIP do 12-3

    ReplyDelete
  94. McClearin and JJT also announced that their podcast is ending too but both have individual moves coming up. Maybe JJT will get the 10-12 Saturday show that 720 mentioned on Wednesday. At this point, too much smoke so McClearin is probably getting one of the weekday spots.

  98. Wonder how the producers shake out...does Sean still produce 10-1 and then host 1-3? Mino hosts 1-3 and produces Hardline? And Blake to The Dumb Zone? Cost cutting at its finest.

(The Dumb Zone patreon page links to Blake's IG profile)

    ReplyDelete
  99. If JJT comes back to the ticket I’m flat out down with whatever time slot he’s on. He’s the absolute WORST.

    ReplyDelete
  100. WIP with Blake as producer and DJ with tickers would be great IMHO

    ReplyDelete
  101. Yup I could see Bass and Mino still producing the other shows. So 1-3 is basically just filler and not a real "seat at the table" time slot. Probably the only reason why it's moved from 10-12 so that Mino could continue into THL without having a 3-hour gap

    ReplyDelete
  102. Matt Mclearin coming back gives me absolutely no hope for the future of the little Ticket. There's nothing novel about it, nothing exciting about it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Donovan + whoever makes more sense as a 12-3 lead-in for THL. That 1-3 theory with Mino/Bass stinks lol

    ReplyDelete
  104. 12:01 definitely has no recollection of when BaD started.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Sean flat out can’t be a permanent host. He just doesn’t have “It”. Great producer, decent fill in, long term he just doesn’t work (for me at least). I hope the Catman sees that. This month has proven it to me.

    ReplyDelete
  106. B# I've heard a lot of Matt McLearin over the years on KTCK, and I haven't liked a bit of it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I don't know if McLearin is bad. It's hard to judge a guy who was saddled with JJT as his partner. As others have written it's a solid business move by the suits since they really won't be adding much if any to the payroll. Nothing exciting about it though, while I don't think he's bad he never stood out to me as good either. The Bass Mino show if true is not at all something I'm looking forward to. I know Sean has paid his dues and all and I'm sure he's a good human but he bores me to tears with his sports points and his Ranger homerism is too much for me, a Ranger homer, to take.

  108. I think MM has grown leaps and bounds over the years. He'also pretyy much wiped away, at least on air, the ceeeper factor that once plagued him. I tjink he and Donnie wouls make for a good pairing. I'm thinking 10-12 WiP, followed by DaM. I'll take that. Especially v. B&S.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Poor Monty. Getting passed up for MM. If I were him I’d just throw in the towel and get my Sunday mornings and evenings back in Mavs season. Or record some pods with D&J for shits and giggles

    ReplyDelete
  113. @Breakfast
Definitely it. Won't they be in Oxnard, too? If it's MM with Donnie, I'm in. Thought MM was very solid his last time here. Was sad when he went back to AL. Wasn't sad to see JJT go. Fucking A what a beating that man is. If Cat brings that dude back, I'll start a letter writing campaign for his ouster. That is both Cat's and JJT's. It would be so cool to see WiP get its primetime shot in that 10-12 or even 12-3 slot. More than deserving IMHO.

Listened to ep.2 of TDZ and was left a bit meh-y. Kinda like my tv subs, I already have too many Patreon and YT subs that I don't watch or listen to as it is, which means I piss away $$$ every month. I won't be adding more. Sorry DZ. Reading on reddit how TDZ alread has 2k+ subs and is busting. Good on them. But it won't go on like this and it won't stay like this either. They'll hit their ceiling soon enough and it'll come down from there. It's the way this stuff goes, mostly. But we'll hear them again gratis soon enough on TF.

Whoops. The announcement is *tomorrow* at 10:00 AM.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Rhyner’s advice to Tier 2 and 3 was to leave the Ticket and get in real reps somewhere else. Seems to have paid off for MM.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I hope the new players are established heavy hitters we know. Mark Followill would be at the top of the list though it's hard to imagine him leaving the Mavs. Doocy would be good. So would Joe Trahan. I hope the new guy isn't a retread. My dream, and it absolutely is an absurd fantasy, is for Mike to come back and do 10-12 solo with a producer with Donnie shifting into a lead 12-3 role. I'm personally a big fan of DJ. Donnie and DJ would work for me. I really have no idea what's coming. I'm sure there will be a degree of shock no matter what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Appears to be McClearin. At least a lot of signs are pointing toward it. I've no issue with the pairing, but if true, it will entail a period of gelling. Could be a very long period, at that. I'm not sure if that's what the station need right now. OK, yes, they're in/coming off of (depending on how this next book goes) a historic ratings period. But they've lost more than a few core members over the past year (going back 3 years if you count Rhyner), and now they have a hole between the two powerhouse bookends (yes, whether some of you like it or not, THL is still a powerhouse). In one way it's a good problem to have, as the am/pm slots mean everything. In another, not having a solid middle can lead to a weakening of the pm slot. So in a way this is a critical decision for Cat/Bennett, their futures, and the future of TT. I'm not sure if the parterning up two hosts who really don't know each other at this crucial juncture is wise. Unless, Donnie and MM (DaM) take the 10-Noon slot, leaving 12-3 to, say, WiP. But is WiP ready for that? Genuinely ready? Neither M has hosted a daily show and for 3 hours to boot. As Sirois, Julie, KT, Krystina, and Danny, it's a whole new ballgame when the spotlight's on you everyday an for every moment you're live. No more picking and choosing your spots, letting the game come to you (unless you're Rhyner, but that's disinterest); nope, you must be "on" at all times. Is 12-3 a suitable proving ground, or would 10-12 be a better choice? If you go 10-12, then you have the issue of two hosts getting to know each other and all the awkwardness that comes along with it (DaM), and, again, is this the time to take that chance -- to possibly weaken your pm drive show? Those of us who were around when BaD started out remember quite well that it took some time for them to be accepted, much less become a strong show. And they had the Stars Stanley Cup run/win to sort of cut their teeth on, put them in the spotlight, and give them something to discuss everyday that listeners were wholly into. Not too mention that because they were Northern transplants, it was assumed they had exptertise in hockey, which made us take notice and heed of their analyses. None of that is in play now. Interesting times, for sure.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They could be catching a break on the whole chemistry thing with football starting back up. Cowboys/NFL/NCAA football can help kill a ton of segments without putting too much pressure on the new hosts trying fill segments.

  118. Gonna be sweet when Dan and Jake get their new studio built

    ReplyDelete
  119. I remember that one week that Matt M filled in with Dan in the dragon’s den. It exceeded my expectations, because I had none for a fill in host that went to prom as a 30 y/o with a teenage date and believed he had been abducted by aliens. If this dude is a permanent host? F that shit. I’ll go someplace else for my midday time kill while I drone on so corporately

    ReplyDelete
  120. Cumulus sent Dan and Jake a cease and desist because of their new show. It sounds like they believe they're well within their rights under the non compete and plan to continue the new show. I hope for their sakes that Cumulus doesn't pursue it further because if that happens it's going to take them into deep waters no matter how right they are.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Some years back Matt McClearin did a segment on one show or another he was filling in for -- I think it was the Hardline. It was the dirtiest material I ever heard on The Ticket and I haven't liked him since. I also shook my head over the alien abduction and prom date thing.

Whether he's a better broadcaster than he used to be -- well, he was never all that bad. He was actually pretty good. I remember a Sunday morning show he did with Scot Harrison called MaSS that I really liked. So I'm prepared to get over my visceral distrust of him.

But I'm mildly skeptical about McClearin coming to join Donnie, although I grant there are some circumstances pointing that way. Jeff Catlin isn't known for jumping the gun with host assignments. He usually takes his time and throws out some mix-n-match tryouts. It's hard to imagine he isn't going to tinker around with some other pairings. I'm not enthusiastic about Doocy, Trahan, or Cowlishaw, either. While I kinda like Sean Bass, I have to agree with the consensus here that a large dose of him as a daily co-host would not excite me.

Has Donnie ever co-hosted with Eli Jordan?

    ReplyDelete
  122. PS: If we're not going to get Monty or Mino middays, I'd really love to hear Rich Phillips work more with Donovan.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'm pretty certain we're getting Monty just by the way things went down today. Donny announced Monty would be in from 10-3 at nearly the same time the 10am announcement was announced. I don't think they'd have a random, unnecessary fill in there for such a big announcement.

Then on Gordo's twitch stream he calls Monty who happens to be out with Ted Emmerich, seemingly celebrating, and gives a coy response when Gordo asks directly if he's celebrating tomorrow's announcement (which was a question in chat).

    ReplyDelete
  124. @1117: I've been out and have not heard any podcast or any Ticket stream for a couple of days. Did D&J say they got a cease-and-desist demand?

If it's true, then I doubt that Cumulus would bluff and not sue them if they don't pull the podcast.

But I couldn't tell from your comment whether this was publicly mentioned somewhere, or whether you had some source. Can you (or anyone else) clarify?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Yes, D&J said it on today's Dumb Zone during "listener feedback" haha. Dan read a couple real listener feedback emails and then started reading the cease and desist as the last feedback.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I mean, what did they expect? The entirety of this is a scam. They are laying the groundwork for something they agreed upon over a year ago with Rhyner, B&S, and iHeart. This is now beginning to make sense. A year's worth of segments dedicated to NCs, the frequent Labor vs. Capital segments... They've spent a year convincing themselves and their listeners that they "had no choice." Richie Whitt's source(s) was(re) dead ass on.

In a bit over 5 months from now Dan and Jake will be on TF. And if the first few days of TDZ are any indication, they'll fit in nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  127. That they are calling it Dumb Zone -- not even The Dumb Zone-- should tell you everyrthing you need to know.

This was a calculated, Jerry Jones-esque let's stop even cleaning Texas Stadium so no one will want to come there so we can get a new STADJIUM from tax payers' dollars and just to make sure it happens let's hire someone (Parcells) we have no intention of letting take any credit for any success we might have down the road.

I invite you to check out this decade old case. A few things - note the non compete featured an opportunity for Cumulus to match a competing offer during the non compete. See my conjecture earlier about Danny applying, interviewing, hired and started within a week. Always said that was suspicious, if Balis had a similar provision, can see why they claimed that, to avoid issues with Cumulus.
Second- the salary was structured where 5% was in consideration of the non compete. In other words, they got a 5% bump to agree not to compete for 6 months. If THZ has a similar provision in their contract, there could be issues.
Third- this case pivoted on if internet show competes with radio show. I would bet in the decade since this case was decided, lawyers have probably tightened up that loophole. If they have, more issues for THZ.
And even if they think they’re right, even if they win, if they go to court they’re paying a lawyer a lot of money. Maybe they have it, but even a temporary restraining order hurts them. How many people will continue to subscribe if they’re not posting new content?
