Is There Anything New to Say About J+D Departure?

71 comments:

  1. Sure. Continue thread here. MTC is always willing to listen.

I do have a new tidbit -- I actually consider it quite a bit more than a tidbit -- that answers some of the questions that we've been having about J+D's conduct and their stumbling, coy video. I'm slammed right now and will supplement when I get a chance. Maybe tomorrow.

I did want to respond to Surly's question buried somewhere in that record-setting thread (about 250 comments):

Yes, my source has retracted its certainty that J&D are not going to the Freak. Thus, so do I. You may withdraw that information from the bank, you may take it off the books, and discard it in an ecologically responsible fashion.

Also, someone asked about running out of reds. In fact, after more than 1,000 posts, it is getting harder to find appropriate images that are not copyright protected and that I don't remember using before (sometimes, I don't remember and repeat an image).

    1. They’ll join the Freak where few listeners will follow, fewer still when they realize Freak is not a sports talk station, and the station itself will fold in another year. What happens to our boys after that I don’t have the slightest idea.

  2. Looking forward to your tidbit that's bigger than a tidbit, Pman.

  3. As the legendary Dan Jenkins said in one of his books (I can't remember which one right now, but reading Dead Solid Perfect again for the umpteenth time)

"It's time to piss on the fire, boys, and call in the dogs. This hunt is over."

  5. Weird. You post up stuff. Respond to stuff. And respond to the stuff you initially responded to, and yet, you just can't yet publish the info pertaining to the now over 2k comments of angst, irrationality, and petformance art. Me thinks, like Dan and his not so disguised I say don't care but it means everything to me pose re Twitter trending, and look at me I'm the belle of the ball, this is my/me time, ain't no stopping us now just ask Surly and reddit ego blue ball busting bullsh...that you too think this is your Moment, your 15. Just do the cars. You got something, publish it. "Tease." For fuck's sake, man. Sack up, alteady.

  7. This is such a lousy situation. I’m equally a hard P1 of the station and of the Hang Zone.

Family fights are crappy, and trying to figure out which side is right is no fun, and probably neither side is “right”.
Talent contracts are not written to the benefit of the talent and are only designed to keep them from jumping ship and competing directly against (aka, this exact situation).

So when the station and crew say, “We want them here, we wanted to re-sign them.”.
And Dan and Jake say, “We wanted to stay, we wanted to re-sign.”

Then the obvious question is, “Why aren’t they still doing their show on the Ticket?

Legally, Cumulus can’t divulge the reason, but Dan and Jake can. And if I’m being honest, saying “We wanted more money” doesn’t cut it because what does that mean? It could have been an amount more than the Musers make or the Hardline makes - and the reality is mid-day shows don’t pay what AMD/PMD make, just like cornerbacks don’t make quarterback money.

Saying, “...they wouldn’t give us something in the contract we wanted”, doesn't really tell us anything. Gleaming from the leaked Bennett email - It could have been the ability to independently put out a live YouTube stream, they could promote on their radio show, that was on at the same time as the Hardline. I don’t know a radio company that agrees to that.

The more vague Dan and Jake are about what transpired the more suspicious I get about their motives and end game. The video, I don’t think helped their case and as a fan of theirs, rooting for them to get the best deal possible (while also understanding this is still a business) - my sixth sense tells me there’s another shoe to be dropped and the Friday shift change announcement up the way just supported those feelings. To me, what and where they’ll end up is pretty obvious.

So, this also lends to their ambiguity as to why - they can’t be specific because legally it would doom them. It’s the same thing that happened with Danny. He quit, because of whatever claims he made unrelated to the station, only to magically get a phone call from the competitor the day after his non-compete expired and made him an offer with adult money. This also means, just like Danny’s situation - a total of zero reasonable people will ever believe this and that it wasn’t the plan all along. Danny may not have been worth a lawsuit, but The Hang Zone very much may engage legal action - if somehow it’s all provable. The 3 big companies gnerally don't go poaching the other's talent, and this is why.

Lastly, and adding the most conflicting sense of emotions: Stuck under a contract that was never designed to benefit the talent means they’ve been, and surely in their minds for good reason, secretly planning to compete against the Mothership for some - you pick - length of time while still employed there.

How do we feel about that?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I must say I'm also confused how Pman had time to put up this new post and respond to another comment but not enough time to spill the beans on his tidbit. Would it really require more than 30 seconds?

    ReplyDelete
  9. How do I feel about that 7:17?
I am loyal to people not the company. Why should I give 2 fucks if Cumulus or The Ticket succeeds if they drive key talent away?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. how do you know they drove them away? until we know what contract demand went unrequited, maybe we'll all find out what they really wanted all along was a drive time slot.

      Delete
    2. And both current drive time slots are number one in their target demo, and the station just spent 6 months as the top overall station in the market. How insanely out of touch with reality does a show need to be to go to mgmt in that environment and demand a drive time slot?

  10. There's a limitless supply of AI-generated redheads to be had. Gordon would certainly disapprove

    ReplyDelete
  11. If you're loyal to the people, how about how Danny treated his Ticket co-workers? They seemed blindsided to his plans; he was still coming on air after he left but before going to the Freak.

All indications are that the other Ticket hosts went to bat for Dan and Jake. During that segment on the Musers I believe it was George who said they told them they weren't going to compete with the Ticket. By his later comments you could tell that George already had formed an opinion on that.

  14. Dude - come on Pman. Not sure which time zone you’re actually in, but literally posted at 11pm. Responded to a comment over an hour later at 12:17am. Please spare us the attention-grabbing charade.

  15. If they end up at the freak, I think we’ll all know they planned to do it since it’s inception. Their coworkers will feel played, as will some of us. Some like the players, I like the team. I like round tables, campound, etc. I dont think what will transpire in the next several months will look great for Dan and Jake personally.

If they were interested in the freak originally, sure. But with how that station has panned out, I dont get it. Their own sub Reddit even makes fun of it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If they have a deal with The Freak, are they legally allowed to discuss it until the noncompete expires? Isn't that the reason Danny and Rhyner denied any interest in Danny to The Freak until the day his noncompete expired?

The hosts would know this. They are all just setting them up to be liars and most people seem to be falling for it

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It’s possible if not probable from how that situation went down that Danny was basically a restricted free agent with a club option to match another radio offer. Which might make sense for Danny’s HL position. You don’t want him able to jump immediately to a competitor, so has a non compete, but he’s a producer, so not making Tier 1 money, the RFA gives him upside if a competitor makes a run at him, while protecting the company. And part of the reason I think that- the timeline thru gave out was something like this
      Monday- non compete expires
      Tuesday Rhyner calls him
      Weds-,he interviews at iheart
      By Friday-hire is approved
      Next Monday-Danny starts.
Sorry, no way a corporation of ihearts size posts/hires/orientates and started an employee that quickly without behind the scenes machinations. So there has to be a reason they were so careful with their narrative-and the restricted free agent scenario explains it.

  17. If they are indeed liars, then how are people "falling for it"? Your odd attachment to Dan and Jake is, well, odd. To the point of perhaps cogntitive/epistemic disconnect. An intentional, self created, blinkered blindspot.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You don’t talk about the future without diminishing the present so TF isn’t going to talk up D&J while desperately hoping someone on TF shows signs of gaining an audience.

    ReplyDelete
  19. well, someone is lying. Gordon has stated, repeatedly, he was "promised", by them, they weren't leaving to compete against them.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Some people seem to be so in love with the HZ that it is clouting their judgement

    ReplyDelete
  21. Does anyone else feel like the Musers apparent aversion to competition off putting? I can't imagine a coworker leaving and me seeking a commitment that they'd not work for a competitor.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 11:56, not at all. It's a niche market in a fading medium. Competition can mean taking food off your table and destroying what you have spent a career trying to create. Now, I don't think the Musers are terribly worried about going head to head against Dan and Jake, but it would doubtless make life more difficult. If someone I considered a close friend did that to me without giving me a heads up -- or worse, lying about it -- then yeah, I might be a little ticked off.

  23. Supposedly Donovan is moving to 12-3 and his co-host will be somebody not currently on the station.

Seems like Trahan but the issue with that would be he couldn't be there for station events/campounds/training camp?

    1. Source? It would make sense, if they promote from within, whether that’s Elf, Mino and Monty, some weird combo we aren’t thinking of, it would make the most sense to have an established name/brand/voice taking 12-3 rather than 10-2. Give the new show less to carry. Just interested in what and where you’re hearing this? Someone inside Cumulus? Some message board? After all Surly didn’t you post something the other day and immediately distance from it?
I think you’re right, just curious where this is coming from. Wondering if ticket salespeople are already laying the groundwork with clients? If so, I need to make some calls. I don’t work there any longer but some of my clients here also advertise on TT,…

  24. Wouldn't going to 105.3 make better sense. I understand they are not the Ticket but they do have some talent there and adding 2 more talented players to the line up makes them much better than TF would be. May have to reshuffle the line up but it would make it a more compelling listen.

  25. Yeah this. In my head i hear that conversation more like “you’re not crazy enough to be going over to the freak, right? They’re be back to mandatory mettallica in 6 months”. More likely than “ oh please don’t compete with us”. Musers have competed with the likes of Kidd Kraddick, Stern, Hawkeye, Hal Jay, Jody dean, etc and held their own. I don’t think they’re worried about Dan and Jake going to the freak to compete with them. More likely worried about Dan and Jake going to the freak to ruin their future careers in DFW.

  26. I’ve beaten a dead horse with this but I think the fan would make more sense too. Rhyner making fun of summer bash, competing with WED, milking the hangzone hold out and trying to get listeners from it, etc., it’s just all so cringeworthy

    ReplyDelete
  27. Trahan would be an interesting choice because it would be a massive change in strategy. Weekday hosts have always been all-in on the ticket. That’s how you get the bunker mentality. KTCK would obviously not be Joe’s main squeeze. I just don’t know who fits that bill unless you promote from the thin bench

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lol the Freaks bench consists of TC, a failed ticker host, a guy that has zero radio talent. People shit on Sean bass, Ty walker, Monty, DJ, Detmore, etc but all seem capable of hosting a show. Are they weekday, market 5 level talent? Maybe not, but point out the up and coming talent at the Fan or the Freak for comparison please.
      C

      Delete
    2. I have no idea who’s waiting in the cards at the fan or the freak. But neither of those stations have three open host roles over 5 hours of weekday programming to fill. Just because those other stations have no bench doesn’t mean that KTCK’s isn’t thin, because it is. Or are you enjoying 5 hours of diamond talk today?

In my worthless opinion, Monty is clearly the best of the next crew and most worthy of a promo. He can sports talk, talk talk, and if you promote him, it doesn’t screw up the continuity of any of the other shows.

  30. This midday fill in today is brutal. Both are good dudes but not capable of filling a large timeslot even in a fill in role. Sean and Ty both add overall station value in their current roles but certainly not fronting a show. But sprinkle some of the magical C pixie dust on The Ticket and I am sure they will be just fine in role.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Trahan would be great but I'll wait to believe it just because I'm not sold on him wanting the job, especially if it's 12-3. As the top sports anchor for WFAA, that requires him working odd hours and being all over the place for coverage throughout the day.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Let’s apply some of the same logic that we have to D&J wanting to find other streams of revenue outside of the show. Why would Tegna be ok with their top sports anchor in market #5 picking up a second gig five days a week and helping earn revenue for another company. If that’s what Joe really wanted to do, make him do a podcast and sell ads on that.

And I don’t get the ticket pursuing him either. At the end of the day, Joe isn’t going to care if his sidegig is #1 or #3 or #10 in its daypart. He cares about kicking Newy’s ass at 5, 6 and 10.

  32. Ty and Sean are essential soldiers. But as hosts they don’t do anything for me. Especially Ty.

I hope noon to 3 has a three man booth. Hang Zone basically did. Dan and Jake wanted everyone involved and I loved that aspect of the show.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed. I don’t think Ty or Sean are tier 1 talent, but I don’t expect all stars to back up all stars. I just think what you want from your bench is someone who can step up and fill in without embarrassing themselves or the station.

  34. Out of curiosity I keep hearing people say that we are the #5 market however we are clearly #4 in statistical metro area population (8 million 2022 estimate) and is forecast to pass Chicago for #3 by 2035 at the latest. How often is the Radio market metric updated because it has been a good minute since we were the #5 market in terms of population. I thought maybe C would know why the radio market references haven't moved us up to #4 to be proportional to the actual population.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yeah it's weird but both are true. Dallasis the 4th lagst city/mkt but Nielsen still pits it at 5.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Was Hanson's show during the Cowboy's flagship years? If so, his contract may have called for him to have a show at some point. Brad Sham made very few appearances on the Ticket but still handled all of the various Cowboys network stuff that did show up there.

Also, remember Bob and Dan both came on board after the Rocco and Chris Arnold deals.

As far as D&J going to the Fan, I don't see that as a workable deal. Most listeners of the Fan are hardcore sportsball people and my friends that listen to it say the Ticket is a bunch of know nothing clowns. I just don't see D&J meshing with that fanbase.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Nielsen uses census data to get to “TV households” which is how they base their market sizes. They update them every year. Dallas is just barely behind Philly for the #4 market and might be ahead for the 2023-24 rankings

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's not that difficult to figure out: TF is trolling. It's their idea of, as Sirois says, "having fun." Not being done with changes can mean literally anything. For example, it can intend that the ratings are and will conntinue to get better; better to the point where they change the area radioscape. If you also haven't figured it out yet, TF's trolling relies on semantic games.

THZ is not going to TF. They're going to try to create their own Barstool or Athletic or Bleacher Report. And again, this stuff isn't too hard to suss. If you listened to and took the words of (especially) Dan and Jake seriously over the past few years, then you would know they are very much in the corner for these start up/"gig economy"/latest in tech dependent business models. They have also been very vocal and supportive of the athlete who defines their own terms vis-a-vis contract negotiations/branding/digital revenue/etc (pro and college). Finally, they have expressed on a near daily basis their default pro labor stance -- that the boss (corporation, any sized business, et al) is almost always in the wrong and rarely if ever has labor's best interest in their heart. Indeed, quite the opposite.

All of this is to say, take them at their word. They really are going to give this a go. If it doesn't sucdeed, then I agree with the comments saying we'll eventually hear Dan took a position in Lincoln, NE and that Jake is either out of the business entirely or even back at TT.

Don't be suckered in by TF. They're a bunch of mediocrities. Yes, even, and perhaps most especially, The Godfather.

Bin-fucking-go. Spot on. It's going to be recast as a sports station. That's why they made the moves. Goodtime Charlies for the am drive. Sports the rest of the day. The only way Rhyner and Cavanaugh make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  44. If you stop and think about it, 4:04 is 100% on the money. Also makes the most sense from what I've always thought about DnJ. They come off as up front and honest dudes. Can't see them pulling a Rhyner or Danny or Sirois or Julie. If they told DnM and the rest of the gang they weren't going elsewhere to compete head to head we should take them at their word.

  45. I think folks are confusing on-air banter with real life. Reality is a b. I don't care how loaded Jake's family or his wife's family are or if Jake's wife makes huge bank, having little kids is expensive, and lifestyle creep is real. The vast majority of people can't just flip a switch and absorb a significant income drop, no matter how much they may or may not admire start up guys.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think you're confusing living in a bubble, listening to loud but small groups who are in error and as a result misreading one's actual station, convincing others it is the case, and acting accordingly with our everyday reality where none of the above apply.

I know there'a lot of differing opinions on it, strong ones at that. It hit me a bit funny.
