Final Observation on Greggo's Weekend Meltdown . . .

.  .  .  and then I'll put a cork in this topic for awhile, unless there's some news.

=====================

Let's put aside the content of Greggo's bizarre weekend Tweets.

Let's put aside whether his judgment as to the robustness of his employment approaches that of an armadillo deciding whether to cross a highway.

Let's put aside whether he should or should not be on The Fan's Sunday Cowboys coverage, and the reasons he is not.

Here's the true, ongoing problem with what he did this weekend:

It hurts RaGE.

When he reveals to the public how he feels about his employer and his on-air colleague and friend, and how the latter is starting to feel about him, listeners factor that knowledge into their judgment (subconscious or live) as to whether what they're hearing everyday on RaGE is sincere or fake, from both Greggo and Richie.

A display of false camaraderie doesn't give the listener a good feeling about what he's being sold.  The "family feeling" (all right, sometimes "dysfunctional family feeling") that the Ticket successfully conveys, and that RaGE has been trying to develop for the past year with all the on-air palsy-walsy, is destroyed.

Greggo's weekend poetry has greatly damaged his daily product.  You just can't hear RaGE the same way, knowing what Greggo has now improvidently revealed.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

My thanks to Confessor ScottsMerkin for retrieving the following recent Tweets where Richie and Greggo try to laugh this off as a bit:

Richie Whitt  Since I'm getting so many inquiries re: @TCUWhiteTrash's supposed "firing" from Cowboys post-game show: 1. He was invited back before season and declined; 2. Remember, he has a twisted sense of humor; 3. You really think I have that kind of power?

My response:

Not credible. Not in the least.

This is damage control, and a pretty sorry attempt.

What bottom-dwelling show does an intentional "bit" about internal discord?

They're moving from dirty-laundry-airing to listener-intelligence-insulting.

  1. Just struck me:

My God, don't these guys have a boss?

Can you imagine (1) two Ticket hosts engaging in this kind of patently pretend-jolly banter over a disastrous indiscretion by one of them, and (2) THE CUMULO-TICKET OVERLORDS ALLOWING IT, AND (3) ALLOWING IT TO CONTINUE?

Virtually guaranteeing that negative buzz over Greggo's weekend romp will not die, as it was otherwise in the process of doing.

  2. they are now having banter back and forth over twitter about music, they have never interacted on twitter, ever, until today. Contrived is the word of the day, ya'll figure out why

  3. @Plainsman@ScottsMerkin...You are both right. How f'n stupid do they think we are. Like SM just said, they have never interacted on Twitter before. And it's real easy to confirm. Go look at their past tweets. I just did it (and it took a few minutes). It's been said on this site by others many times...The Fan is absolutely classless. The same goes with RW and GW.

  4. As far as them having bosses...whether this is a bit or not (I believe not), maybe the bosses are staying out of it because it's garnering attention. Like it's been stated before, any publicity is good.

  5. Come to think of it. If it was a bit, then why in the hell would Greggo have tweeter convos with listeners. Convos where he's discussing doing his own pre and post game show from his house? This is a load of crap. RW and GW, if you read this, and I'm positive that you will, you fool no one. You both are schmucks. You've handled this in the worst possible way. Why? You've insulted your listeners. I WAS one until today. I used to come on this site and defend RaGE. Not anymore. Insulting jerks.

  6. I gagree with everyone here. This is one of the worst examples of CYA I've ever seen.

  7. It's pretty sad and pathetic but it may not be their choice on how they're handling it. Greggo previously tweeted about Bruce Gilbert throwing down a mandate that he stop using obscenities on twitter, so it's likely that in the cleanup of Greggo's mess he told them to put on this show. That's not to excuse them though since I don't think either of them are particularly intelligent and they're the furthest thing from tactful.

  12. Nice catch, Beav!

    Thanks for bringing it here.

Gotta check in at MTC if you want the latest mostly-correct stuff.

  13. Plainsman, I take it you've had no insiders e-mail you confidentially with some good info (info you can't publish)? It looks like this one is dead, for now. I agree with everyone else here that it was handled by RaGE and The FAN in an insulting manner. Classless and clueless, trying to suck less. Sorry fellas, you're not trying hard enough. I feel kinda bad for Elf and Josh. They're both decent human beings and knowledgeable. They deserve a better home. I swear, Greggo really knows how to single-handedly f things up for everyone better than anyone I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah he sure seems to know how to do that. But I guess it takes village, or some such.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That's correct, Anonymous. No crypto-insiders from The Fan, nor anyone else has offered any inside baseball on this one.

Yeah, it's over if RW+GW just let it drop and get on with putting on a credible radio showgram and stop with all the social-network posturing. (Social network communication is fine -- theirs just isn't believable.)

Although . . . if Beav is right about those Observer links (and I haven't checked, who wouldn't trust someone named Sybils_Beaver [pushing the envelope of acceptable MTC nomenclature, however]?), that's mighty curious. That has lawyer written all over it -- either Observer lawyer or Fan/CBS lawyer.

It may be over as far as the face they present to the metro is concerned, but no one who has ever worked at a workplace with more than two people can doubt that this is the only thing that anyone in-house at The Fan (and probably The Ticket) has been discussing.

Hey, this ain't world peace; this ain't the price of oil; this ain't federal jobs policy; this ain't even college football. But to those of us who spend hours of our time listening to this stuff, it is absolutely riveting.

    And it ain't over.

    ReplyDelete
  16. You know, he didn't handle it great, but I have to say I kind of feel sorry for Richie.

Having Greggo as a co-host is like being married to Anthony Weiner.

  17. The Beav is back to defend its honor. So I double checked the links and still not working. I did find that the Cover Story "The Hard Lie" is available but that is linked to the Observer home page. Any Greggo relatedblog that was a blog post in the sportatorium cnat be found

    ReplyDelete
  18. Beav, no slight to your virtue intended.

I've been wracking my brain to try to figure out why any of (1) Richie, (2) The Observer, or (3) CBS/Fan -- or their lawyers -- would take those pieces down. Any legal effect they would have on the Greggo relationship would long since have ripened, I would think. Quite aside from the fact that they've been out there for months (if they're the pieces I'm thinking of -- I'm not sure which pieces they are), they were generally (a) factual reporting on Greg's radio comings and goings, and (b) arguably sympathetic to Greg. I am hard-pressed to understand how eliminating those pieces advantages or disadvantages anyone.

I am guessing some Confessors are themselve esteemed counselors and could give us some informed guesses on what's up.

The only speculation I have -- and it strikes me as extremely improbable -- is that CBS is negotiating with Greg for his amicable departure from the network, and that includes elimination of job-search-impeding reports on Greg's bumpy employment road since leaving The Ticket. Nah, makes no sense -- any radio-savvy guys are going to know his story anyway, and it's available elsewhere. It also makes no sense that The Observer would be interested in participating in that kind of negotiation. "The Hard Lie" is a major piece; the Observer couldn't very well erase that from the consciousness of the Internets.

Beav, just so I'm clear: It's not just that links don't work -- it's that the blog pieces themselves have been taken down, not available, can't be opened. Correct?

Finally, Beav, do you know what those pieces were? Were they Richie's occasional reports on Greggo's radio adventures (Choppy, Wolfe, final divorce from Ticket)?

Thanks again for this extremely intriguing bit of information, and for confirming.

  19. I think what's going on here (the links, etc.) is nothing more than the radio version of Dumb and Dumber trying their best (meaning worst) attempt at CYA. I can imagine Gilbert heard an earful from CBS and in turn he told the two W's that they'd better fix it, no matter what it takes...or else. And being the Dumb and Dumber radio duo that they are, the deletion of any perceived "evidence" was a part of their plan. A plan that also included deleting comments on RW's blog and the asinine, insulting "it was all a joke" Twitter series...a joke that clearly wasn't joke. Bottom line is that these clowns will not be on-air this time next year. At least not in this configuration. And as far as GW goes, probably not at all. Which is in many ways a sad thing.

  20. All Greggo shenanigans should be met with indifference.

I'm reminded of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror where the advertising icons come alive. Ultimately the way to stop them was to "Just don't look".

  21. I wonder if RW's "Last Supper" blog entries are still up?

  22. Anyone catch the Hardline's segment on the anniversary of the release of Nirvana's Nevermind? Man that Corby is clueless when it comes to such things. I'll give him this, he sure speaks with authority. The dude just makes up what he feels the actual circumstances and their effects are. Facts need not apply. Whatever sounds good in his head is the way it is. I'm not going to go on a Corby bashing rant here, but I have to say that as the years go on with him in the cohost seat, I've grown to dislike him more. I thought it'd be the other way around. Unfortunately it isn't. I guess that's why I'll be giving Russ Martin at least a try when he moves to drive time next week. He USED to be pretty good back when he was in that time slot. Well, until he became insanely full of himself. Afternoon drive time around here might be getting interesting in the very near future. Last thing. I completely tuned out the Soul Patch today. It's just not good. And I have to admit it, both Ben and Skin and Elf and Josh were pretty darn good. Ben and Skin have really come a long way. Come to think of it, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the midday and afternoon drive slots become a lot tighter in the ratings over the next year. If the Cowboys get good look out. Same goes for the Rangers if a deep playoff run happens again. Remember how the Fan's ratings shot up during last year's World Series run? Imagine that but with informative hosts on the station that listeners can come back to during the day to get and voice opinions. Add that to another station with a former tv broadcaster on the team. Yup, it might get interesting around here.

  23. A big MTC greeting to DinosaurMex.

I certainly agree that the next six months will be interesting.

And we'll be addressing this very topic in the weeks to come, so check back often.

  24. Thanks for the welcome, Plainsman. I hope you do post up something on what I wrote about. I really do think that the Ticket's hegemony on the ratings and market might be about to begin to slide. Well, not mornings. No one is going to touch the Musers for the foreseeable future. They're THAT good. The rest of the shows, and yes that includes the Hardline, might have a dogfight on their hands in the near future. But I think if it happens, it'll be great.
