A "Where's Greggo 2013" Inventory

We're not hearing much of substance other than from the frantically tweeting Girlfriend, so I'm going to give this one solid posting and if there aren't any developments I'm going to move on, main-topic-wise.  (Comment section always open for RaGE/Greggo/Fan talk.)

What to write about?  How about a listing of all current theories, some of which overlap, and many of which are not mutually exclusive.  (An annoying way of saying "it could be a combination of several of these things.")   And it may be none of these things.  These are not in order of likelihood, just the order they're coming to mind.  Let's get to it.

(1) He is sick, perhaps hospitalized.

(2)  He ran into trouble with Fan management over his absence relating to Chris Kyle's funeral.

(3)  He's angry about The Prank.  (RaGE Prank on Greggo)

(4)  It's a bit to draw attention to the station and RaGE.

(5)  Management is preparing to make some changes at the Fan or RaGE that he's unhappy about and he's pouting.

(6)  The Richie-Sybil relationship and perhaps a growing role for Armen has resulted in a diminished role for Greggo and he's feeling that the same thing is happening to him there as (he believes) happened on The Hardline (not his fault, of course).

(7)  The Richie-Sybil relationship and perhaps a growing role for Armen has resulted in a kind of ganging up on Greggo and as the most experienced radio hand on the show, he resents it.

(8)  The Richie-Sybil relationship has created an intolerable and almost indescribably icky and eeeeeww-inducing sexual tension that has eroded whatever professionalism RaGE was starting to develop.

(9)  He's fallen off the wagon.

(10)  The station is in major upheaval up and down the line and it's just all too much for the Hammer, who's getting out while the getting's good.

(11)  He's been suspended, possibly fired, for misbehavior that hasn't been publicized.

(12)  He's a petulant childish jerk who can't stand even the tiniest slight to his real or imagined importance to RaGE.

(13)  He's a major radio talent who is undeservedly taking abuse from the less-talented Richie and Sybil.

(14)  It's time, buddy; it's time.  Greggo's chief addiction is to self-featuring drama, and he can't go for more than a couple years without writing himself another one, so he's off the reservation for no reason that any of us would find rational.

In happier, but less focused, times.

  1. A comment near the end of the last string reports on a comment left on a Fan thread that Greggo may have been suspended for twisting off on a listener who said that Chris Kyle deserved to die. It's a bit incoherent, but thought I'd add this report.

  2. hey Greggo... what's wrong? Do you not like your gig? No, that wasn't the question .. do you not like your job?

  3. I think you pretty much covered the bases, Plainsman. Of course, I doubt we'll ever know the truth, as The FAN and RW in particular have already scrubbed all traces of past incidents and pretended like nothing happened. RW already has deleted all Greggo related Tweets and I'm sure if he's let go or quits they'll go on as if it never occurred, perhaps making some very brief statement about moving on in a different direction or the likes. Then there will be the Greggo I gave it my all, it wasn't my fault, I thought they cared about me statement, and then we'll all move on as if it were a dream.

  4. That "prank" was a bit. It was staged and even produced with sound drops. He can't be pissed about that.

I do agree, however, that he seems to hold some kind of high-and-mighty feeling toward the Chris Kyle situation. And if management told him that he needed to, you know, do his job instead of going out and waving his flag, he would take massive offense to it.

  5. I think Gregg-(F it Im done with nicknames, familiarity and niceties when it comes to the Amazing, Narcissistic, Lying, Hypocritical, Self Pity Party Kit) I believe that the disgusting manner in which Greg Williams made the freak tragic, accidental(?) death of Chris Kyle-all about Greg Williams-a man who constantly tells transparent"fibs"like a young child-was the final straw for me. I can't even switch over to the 105.3 fan out of morbid Greggo curiosity anymore. Love to KTCK 1310

  10. @3:19
Chris Kyle's death was not accidental, it was murder. Premeditated murder at that. As to the rest of your comment, who knows what Greggo's motives were or are. Though I do think there's more truth than not in your tagging Greggo as a "Self Pity Party Kit." Which I think is something that he's naturally prone to, but that is also fostered in him by those around him. More on that below.

The more I think about this (which admittedly isn't all that much), the more I think that the Hammer has put himself in a bad situation and has hitched his wagon with the wrong people. Not that the people he's surrounded himself are bad human beings, but that they perhaps are not the best kind of people for him -i.e., they seem to be enablers of a sort; the sort that are too much on his side, if you know what I mean. Leaving RW and his sad pathologies aside as an impetus behind this latest incident, I believe the best thing for Gregg Williams is to leave radio / media behind. If he wants to start a blog and express his "A Rare Medium Done Well" thoughts, fine. But as much as he's probably convinced himself that he "needs" radio (celebrity is what we're really talking about here) to truly be himself, to live a meaningful life, I think he's mistaken. The fact is, he can't handle it. Sober, sane, or otherwise, he cannot handle it. I don't know what else he'd do, but surely there is something else out there that he could find satisfaction in doing. And surely with all his contacts he could find someone to help him realize it.

  12. Agreed. Great interview (though a bit "hey we're all media guys" fawning) with Dave Barnett. I also thought it interesting that during the 2nd segment Big Bob said to the effect "this is sounding like a Saturday show," and how after the return, they sounded decidedly like a weekday program (meaning there wasn't 15 voices talking over each other and zero focus and the wasting of segments with personal "and then I did this" "this one time..." anecdotes that are only interesting to the person saying it). Looking forward to the next two shows. Who knows, maybe this is a foretaste for things to come? Sure would be cool.

  13. I don't think it's some prank by RaGE, but it might be that he has the flu or something, will be out for a week or so, and that they're not saying anything because they know it'll create controversy and cause for bringing attention to their show?

If that's the case, it's sad. You would hope that a large organization such as CBS would have other ways of calling attention to a drive-time radio show in a major radio market.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "We hope to have him back."

Huh? He's an employee, he's got a contract.

At first I thought that this means that Greg has walked out, that this is not a suspension. But on second thought, not necessarily. He may have been suspended pending resolution of issues required to permit him to return to the station, which could result in a "hope" for a return.

After reading that (by the way, thanks to BBQ), and considering the hush-hush The Fan is imposing on this episode, the one word that does keep popping into my mind is "negotiation." Suits talking to suits. But . . .

Gotta tell you -- I hope the just-prior anon and some others are right and that he will return. However, I am not so sure, even after the "hope he'll return" statement. If the parties are talking, what are they talking about? Inconceivable they'll pay Greg more or that he'll agree to a salary reduction. A Greg-friendly change to RaGE? That would cause problems for Richie-Sybil-Armen.

So it would not shock me at all to learn that Greg has simply walked out -- and they're simply hoping he comes back.

If this relates to the deteriorating political situation on RaGE, as many observers seem to feel, ask yourself what could change on RaGE that would lure him back that would not represent a defeat for the Richie-Sybil axis? And what kind of show would that be with a still-hostile Greg sitting there?

I'm getting ahead of the situation here (shocking, I know), but I think this is an intractable situation for The Fan.

And in its intractability may lie an opportunity for The Fan, an opportunity to end the unsuccessful Richie and Greggo Experiment, unload Greg's salary, and get some pitching in there.

More to the point, I wonder what sales people are telling sponsors.

Any sponsor Confessors out there? Let us hear from you.

Of course, if they're already ponying up to purchase time on a bottom-rated show, they probably don't care all that much that Greg is gone with no indication of when or if he will return. How much worse can the show do without him?

    ReplyDelete
  19. According to a guy on twitter. He knew Chris Kyle personally and was at both his private and public funeral and rode his bike to Austin with the procession and he has reportedly taken his death really hard.

  20. In the past when Greg has been out ill (or alleged to be ill), the station has reported it. Even gotten him on the air to let him croak out a few sentences. Richie hasn't hesitated to inform listeners that Greg is out ill, generally what the problem is, that he's getting better, that he'll be back soon.

Ron the Anon is correct about HIPAA.

But, despite The Girlfriend's alarmist Tweets, this just does not have the feel of an absence owing to a severe health crisis -- at least not one brought on by something other than a station-related stressor.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Breach of confidentiality has to be claimed by the wronged party. If illness is the issue, it's possibile that in this case Greggo has made it known to the station that they are not to give out any information. Or the station is making sure they are protected legally.

    ReplyDelete
  22. True, Ron. My point is that in the past when Greg wanted listeners to know he was convalescing and will return, he was fine with disclosure of his medical issues.

Either this time he doesn't want listeners to think he's returning from illness for some reason that hasn't applied in the past, or he's not sick.

I'm doubtful that he is so sick that this time he doesn't want it publicized, because his boss says he expects him "back any day."

So, if this is illness-related, it's a minor health issue, and in the past minor Greg health issues are not hushed up by either side.

Conclusion: He's either a little sick but not willing to play ball with the station as he has in the past, or he's not sick.

These were Tweeted and responded to by RW in the last 6 hours. Greggo is gone. To be honest, I'm no longer interested in the Greggo story. I think it's sad, for sure, but it's no longer compelling. Notice I did not say "tragic." Because it's not. It's fairly typical for people like himself. What does interest me is the soon to be finished radio career of Richie Whitt. This guy has burned so many bridges you'd think he's an arsonist. His shortsightedness on every level is gobsmacking. While I think Greggo will end up being A-OK, living on some sort of ranch in Colorado, I have the feeling the real downfall story will pertain to Whitt.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The Hammer has his haters, but I've always enjoyed listening to Greggo. He's fun to listen to, especially talking sports. There is nobody that is more passionate. He tried to bring Ticket schtick to Fan, but he wasn't surrounded with the Ticket talent. I think Greggo has just grown frustrated. But hey, he gave it a good what...two, three years? Hang in there Greggo, you still got your fans out here!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've thought the tea leaves have been pointing to the conclusion of Greggo's tenure with RaGE almost from the beginning of this latest absence. A return still isn't impossible, but reading between the lines can't be giving those hoping for his return much hope.

And let's be fair: Although he has had his eruptions during his time on The Fan, as a recent comment said he basically held it together and, one Anon-who-wants-us-to-think-he-or-she-has-inside-poop aside, we're not hearing rumblings about substance abuse.

So to me, this all has the feel of a clash of temperaments rather than Greg going off a cliff. Petty and childish, perhaps, but not unheard of in the world of celebrity egos. If this is the case, and guessing that Richie Whitt is not a highly-regarded figure among local radio moguls who are observing this drama, it would not surprise me in the slightest to see Greg emerge with another radio show somewhere on the dial, a show more suited to his talents, with more professional on-air support and a more stable institutional framework than The Fan seems to have. Where that might be, I don't know. Would ESPN take another chance on him after his shaky tenure on the show with RJ Choppy? Maybe, after this period of relative stability with The Fan. But it might also be a non-sports talker who wants an evening or midday sports-talk show to switch things up.

Yes, yes, I know I'm getting ahead of myself, groundless speculation, I'll-look-stupid-when-Greggo's-back-on-RaGE, sure. Like I said, when you run a site like this, you work with what you got, which sometimes, like now, ain't much. But as I sit here right now, looks like Greg is done at The Fan, but but maybe not done in the market.

One thing to consider: Greg almost certainly has a written contract with The Fan. Given his past, it probably has some disincentives to bad behavior and quitting, like a covenant not to compete in the market after a voluntary departure for a long period of time, six months to a year. A wild guess that the terms of his departure are being negotiated now, as they were with The Ticket lo those many moons ago.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For those that think it's a clash of temperaments or related to the Chris Kyle thing, how do you explain his girlfriend's medical-related, waiting-on-lab-results tweets?

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's a fair question, Shaggy, and I did consider that while composing that last comment.

My thought on that is that The Girlfriend's erratic communications respecting Greg's health is a smokescreen for what's really going on. It may be the case that Greg is under some kind of medical care, but if he is, it's a result of, and not the cause of, whatever's behind his absence. I can imagine that the political blowup (if that's what it was) might well have provoked the howling fantods and put him into some kind of tailspin requiring medical attention.

What makes me think this is not a medical problem in the first instance -- that is, not the originating cause of his absence -- is that if it were, we would be hearing a lot more encouraging talk from Richie, The Fan, and Greg himself that his return was expected. We are not getting that (the highly-suspect insincere-sounding Fan statement "we hope to have him back" aside), so I conclude that this is not primarily about a medical issue.

And what about this "we HOPE to have him back any day" statement, anyway? You use the word "hope" rather than "expect" if the return is very questionable, or, in the event of a medical issue, the guy in question is very seriously ill. Anyone think the latter is going on? That The Girlfriend would be nattering crazily on if there were a serious threat to his health?

Look, we have no idea what's up. I hope I'm right that Greg's not in extremis. I just don't see even the maligned Richie celebrating Greg's departure if, in fact, the reason for his absence is medical.

A long answer to a short Shaggy question. Sorry.

  41. Yup I think Greggo is done at The Fan. They brought him in to be the big draw for listeners to tune in and after a few years and little results, I guess they just don't see the need for him anymore since he never really fit in with their personalities/culture. I don't know what's next for him but I hope he stays out of trouble. Retiring to Colorado is the likely thing for him to do but for someone like him, I think he needs some type of work in broadcasting to keep him occupied for his own good.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I received a text reply from 43733 the fan text line that its health related and Gregg has asked them not to discuss his health and they are respecting that. This may be more serious than most of us thought.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I hope Greggo is OK and will come back soon. He is the reason I listen to the show. But the show is going down the drain. A little fun is fine, but they talk about so much silly crap when they should be sticking to sports. And frankly, Richie is a jerk. When he argues with Greggo, he beats him down until Greggo agrees with him or just quits arguing. I like Fish well enough, but not nearly as much as Greggo. Finally, the station's going to have a major mess on their hands when the Richie-Sybil thing blows, which it will eventually. Bottom line? It's supposed to be sports radio and it's turned into drama.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I (1) am sorry to hear it's a health issue, and (2) doubt it.

Let me flesh that out a tick:

As I said, I'm sure there is a health aspect to this. Greg has gone to the doctor and someone's running some tests and maybe they even had him on a drip bag or something.

But the thing about Greg -- he is a walking health issue. He operates every day of his life from a baseline of health issues, which, by the way, covers an enormous range of conditions: depression, other mental conditions, substance abuse, major disease, minor sickness, accidents, genetic disorders, injury, fatigue, lots and lots of things may be characterized as "health issues." At any given time, Greg is probably subject to at least one thing that can be called a health problem, including the days he shows up to broadcast.

Just so no one thinks I'm calling Greg or The Fan liars, my position is not that he doesn't have health problems, perhaps even stay-home-from-work health problems, but that the stay-home-from-work aspect of these problems, if they exist, arises out of some other professional issue.
The Fan/Richie are just not behaving like the MAIN problem is some temporary health setback from which he is expected to return.

If it is a health issue that drove him from the mic in the first instance and his recovery therefrom is not in sight, then it's got to be a whopper.

Maybe just wishful thinking on my part to imagine that the health aspect of this is secondary to problems at The Fan. I'm hoping that, when the truth is out, we do not hear that he's had a serious substance relapse of any kind as suggested by reported tweets.

In any event, best wishes to Greg for a professional and physical recovery.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah, if it was some serious as in cancer or emergency surgery or whatever everyone in the industry would have at least some whiff of what was up. Which means The Ticket wouldn't be playing overt rubbing their nose in it Greggo drops. By the way if you visit Greggo's girlfriend's Twitter page you'd think it was all about her. Don't know what the dealio is but I'll bet anything it has to do with either pills or petulance. Or both.

  51. The more this thing plays out, the more it resembles, no, the more it is becoming a mirror image of what transpired between Greggo and The Ticket. I think it's safe to assume that what took place several years ago is happening again. Perhaps the particulars are a bit different, perhaps not. But it sure appears to be the same process, the same way of handling it, and thus the same legal strategy being employed by both parties.

Perhaps well meaning people, but enablers nonetheless. Again, I have zero insight into his scene, but just from reading his girlfriend's Twitter page, you'd think she was Greggo. I don't know, it's a weird thing. In truth I feel a bit uncomfortable even talking about it.

Backstabbers and bullshit. I imagine that refers to Fish and Whitt, among others. Been checking in at the RaGE Facebook site. Look, I dig chicks. I've been inside a strip bar. But that show is associated with so many strip clubs and stupid sex crap, it's totally Russ Martin meets Big Dick Hunter while wanting to be Stern. Very cheesy and hickish. For crying out loud, they're sending Sybil to flippin' Baby Dolls tonight to host a UFC watching party. Bad touch city all the way around over there at that Fan, that RaGE. Stay classy, RaGE.

  71. Can't wait till all you haters and doomsayers have egg on your face. Greggo will be back Monday. Write it down.

  72. 703: I hope you're right. I really do. I'd be happy to be wrong about Greg's future on RaGE.

But one doesn't have to be a hater or a doomsayer to be skeptical.

Nor, frankly, would his continued absence spell any kind of doom for anyone on this site.

  73. The Sybil "wrong person" tweet tells us less about her or Greg or RaGE than it does about Fan management, who apparently has taken zero steps to observe standard crisis management procedures, or at least to get their wayward broadcasters under control.

Any responsible management would have put in a call to its lawyers the second Greggo decided he needed a little relaxation, and those lawyers would have told them "tell your Tweeting/Facebooking/blogging talkers to frackin' put a cork in it."

But no -- these liability cannons continue to compete for Exhibit 1 in the lawsuit.

  74. What's the Ben and Skin story? Something going on? Or just MTC rabblelerousers?

They're still listed as a show on 103.3.

    Haven't heard anything.

  75. Grief doctors?

An event has taken place requiring grief doctors and you're poncing off to a Pink concert?

    Say hello to George Dunham.

  76. Re 303:

I think this site is robust enough to tolerate the occasional harsh critic, and 303 wasn't vulgar about it.

My question is: What's the complaint? As sites like this go, it's very reasonable and logical. Not always right, but we deal with what facts we have, and we try to be balanced. We've got a fine group of Confessors here who we hear from frequently, too many now to list.

In particular, what is it about this post and the reaction to it that you find unacceptable? You have a more logical and reasonable approach that you would like to share?

Well, this is the place to do it.

And, I daresay, the best place.

  77. The Ben and Skin meme is a joke. It's the same Anon who uses different "voices." In other words, the dude is a troll who likes to use different guises in the form of different attacks.

On The FAN front...... What a terribly run ship. Embarrassing, really.

  78. Skin just tweeted that they are parting ways with ESPN for now. Don't know if it is a bit or for real, but it came from Skin's twitter account.

    ReplyDelete
  79. So Ben and Skin are gone from ESPN per their twitter accounts.

  80. They just posted the news to Facebook. I guess they are done w/ ESPN.

  83. If Greggo gets middays on ESPN, 105.3 will have absolutely zero ammo to compete. They'll have to resort back to using callers to provide content for the station, and plug J Rome in there somewhere to save face that they actually have one pro sportscaster on air.

  85. I'm not going to tell you, but the jerk put up the identical comment on the next post as well, and got booted.

Sorry, folks, I can't get to these any faster. If I pre-screened comments you wouldn't see yours for a long time, and we wouldn't have the chance to react promptly to new developments.

So sometimes we have to put up with the occasional putz until I can boot his ass. Fortunately there aren't too many.

  89. Hey Anonymous, how did you know he'd be back today?

    ReplyDelete
  90. I would guess that was Greggo's caretaker/girlfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If his gf wouldn't get in touch with anyone on RAGE or the station, why would she come on here and post when he's coming back? Makes no sense. It was some FAN fan acting tough and who got lucky and got it right. That's all.
