Got a New Phone with Salty Battery. So Which App is Best: iHeart or SportsDay TALK?

71 comments:

  1. I like the SportDay Talk app.

  2. I use TuneIn so I can pause for about 45 minutes if I have a phone call and can catch up later during commercials.

  3. Glad to see MTC is up and running. Thought your closing down of the last thread might mean you had enough with the bulshier side of things.

    Go SportsDay Talk, for sure.

Been a bit since I last made a comment. The tone around here from some has become too, oh how do you say in English?, too too much. What's more, it often comes from regular, mostly solid commenters (named and Anonymous). I wish we could get back to having actual conversations. And not ones that devolve into politics (overtly or covertly), I'm smarter than you, and all the rest head rattling. Hopefully this is possible. Perhaps it's time for you (Pman) to set up some guidelines? Then again, you've told us how busy you are with work issues and whatnot. Enforcing guidelines takes vigilance, which means time that you probably can't afford to give to the blog.

  4. TuneIn Pro. Follow instructions at The Unticket for entering the custom URL for the stream.

  5. Another vote for TuneIn. I'm not in DFW so my listening is exclusively via the apps. I've tried 'em all and TuneIn Pro is far and above the best.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I use TuneIn Pro as well. The sound quality on SportsDay sounds like an AM station and iHeart doesn't have pause/rewind/record. TuneIn does everything I need and has the clear stereo sound quality.

It might not be counting towards their listening numbers since the stream goes through a third party proxy, but the sound quality needs to improve for me to go back to SportsDay.

  7. Is tunein pro available for android?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Last I heard, the TuneIn Pro "hack" only worked for the iPhone app. Has that changed?

I use both iHeart and Sportsday Talk, but leaning more to SportsDay Talk since iHeart started forcing a 30 sec commercial on me to start a session.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I use Tunein Pro on my Android. I wish it had a fast forward for when you pause it and want to fast forward through the commercials. There is a bar to fast forward but it's clunky and hard to gauge.

    ReplyDelete
  10. As a Windows Phone 8 user I can say that 1) iHeartRadio suuuucks on Windows Phone, and 2) the manual stream URL tuning method does NOT work in the Windows Phone implementation of TuneIn Pro (at least it hasn't the last dozen or so times that I've tried).

I've started carrying my iPod Touch in my backpack so that I can use TuneIn for iOS, which continues to delight me as much as it did all those years ago on my iPhone 3G, back when it was still RadioTime. It's that good.

    I think I see a CAPTCHA down there that I've entered before (54 5254325).

  11. Hate to take a shot at Corby so soon on a new thread, but he did something today in the Larry Brown interview that he does all the time and it annoys the H out of me.

He is lucky to get to meet and talk with some big sports names, and it bothers me that he presumes to address them as "Buddy."

Can't help you on the phone app.

  12. So let me get this straight...

A 43 year old grown man (who has lost his wallet and phone countless other times) puts his valuables out in plain sight at a basketball arena with 10,000 people, and is confused when something happens to it.
And then has the nerve to blame the "sorryness" of other people.
    What an idiot...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Corby losing his wallet is pretty damn funny. It sucks for him, but funny.

    iHeartRADIO for me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Regarding Corby's wallet, I immediately thought of Hartman in Full Metal Jacket:

"If it wasn't for dickheads like you, there wouldn't be any thievery in this world, would there?"

Seriously, why is your wallet not on your person in a public place?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Question?? What does it mean to "jar"?? I want in on the joke. Thanks.

  16. I know this is not a Richie Whitt blog, but, does this guy not have a clue? I was a reader to DFWSportatorium and apparently, he's bringing it back [free of charge] He says it will be sporadic because of his hectic schedule. Well let's see, he writes maybe 1 out of 25 of the bluestar blogs, They're mostly written by the Scott Crisp dude. He failed on his Pizza joint. What tha hell does the guy have to do? You want to feel sorry for him, but he's just such a friggen ASS!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't remember the specific incident that brought jarring into Ticket consciousness, but it has to do with the practice of storing feces in a jar.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Sports Duck reports that the wallet was turned in to SMU Police last night.

    ReplyDelete
  19. corky loses his wallet twice a year, so of course the ONLY possible conclusion for his wallet to go missing is theft. Yeah, yeah, I know..."if you don't luv yur kuntry you can jes git OUT."

  20. Will kill a segment this afternoon.

  21. The Brisk tea half and half commercials have to go. Followed closely by the new Verizon one. Good grief.

  23. SportsDay app update:

Today, I paused it when BAD was getting ready to announce the Homer Call champ. When i came back to it (somewhere between 30min-1hour).

When I hit play it picked up right where I paused it…for a couple of minutes. Then, it skipped head randomly until it shut the stream down. When I hit play again, it picked up at the current broadcast point.

I liked the SportsDay app for not only the streaming audio, but some of the other DMN related info and articles. This was especially helpful since I don't live in DFW anymore. But after this, I will check out the TuneIn Pro app.

    ReplyDelete
  24. For TuneIn users, make sure in Advanced Settings you have "Pause in Background" switched ON.

Otherwise if you pause and switch apps, the stream will cut off.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ Shaggy. That must be the iOS version. I don't see it on mine.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I use sportsday app mainly even thought the iheart radio app sounds better when I dock my iphone on a speaker.

As for what someone commented on about Richie Witts DFW sports blog, yeah im sure he is "real busy" trying to clean up the mess that his life has become. Failed pizza biz that was one and done within a few months, thought he would turn his free blog into a pay site that no one wanted to pay for.

But now that he is not flying high he will post every once in awhile for free. like anyone gives a shit. Guess he doesn't feel like using his blog to tell everyone how kick ass he is and how great his life is going. He brought all the distant mocking and laughing at his public failures because he was such an arrogant tool.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tunein Pro for sure!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Midgey Whitt is so beaten and broke that he returned his hair plugs to Dr Maloof.

Its almost a yr now that the Tardline has been canceled.
    500,000 watts, 5 listeners.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't understand Corby and the wallet thing. Yesterday he said that he was starting to get pissed when thinking about "what was in store for him" as far as cancelling cards and dealing with the DMV was concerned. Today, he briefly talked about identity theft and "somebody in Tokyo winding up with his information".

So, he gets the ramifications but STILL cannot be bothered with keeping the wallet on him (as others have stated, he is on the record as having done this multiple times before.) I'm glad he got it back (I don't wish identity theft on anybody) but if we hear about him misplacing his wallet on the air again I will really begin to think that he needs to learn this lesson the hard way.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @shaggy

Thanks for the heads up. Like the sound quality of TuneIn Pro munch better. Plus, there seems to be a large selection of other stations to listen to.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love how Whitt made his blog free again at the same time he abandoned it. Wow, so generous! I guess like someone alluded to before, he ran out of things to brag about and finally had to face reality so half of his content disappeared.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm a Mino supporter, but I do wonder if they're gonna tell him to ease off the throttle a bit. He is most definitely a volume shooter so far.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Mino will find the right balance. Just will take him a bit to find the right groove.

  36. Re: Whitt

I checked out that BlueStarBlog...no real content from him, which seems par for the course. Same bullet point, 2 paragraph entries that can be whipped up in a matter of minutes. Not sure if he's giving the impression he's part of NBC5 now, wouldn't surprise me. Only comp he could possibly be getting from that is maybe a press box seat occasionally.

Dude's had a rough year, job wise. Don't see 2014 looking any brighter...his new venture is consulting an internet startup?!

    BigGulps, Huh? Welp....

  37. Re: Whitt

It's kinda hard to feel sorry for a guy who constantly was throwing out his six figure salary at the Fail (100,000.01 is six figures), his kick ass lifestyle, & getting younger at the position. The real life Chris Chris if there ever was one.

When confronted with the absolute poor ratings of his show, he was quick to say ratings don't matter-it's the ad revenue that counts. At the end of the day, they are tied together. If your ratings are poor, that means you don't have enough listeners to warrant charging for ads that few poeple hear. Businesses aren't stupid. Makes one wonder how many top notch businesses that cater to men 25-54 pulled their ads from there as they weren't getting any bang for the buck.

The failed attempt at the pizza business is interesting. Funny how nothing has been said by the proprietor about this abject failure. Somewhere down the line, it will be the other's fault and none on his part

Now, he writes bare minimum blogs for NBC 5 (can't be making much cash doing that). For ones that don't know, one might think he is a big shot spots guru over there. Maybe he has a credential to get into games?

I believe the current job is "media consultant" for a start up Internet company. I am unsure what expertise he has, media wise. Does being a former sports writer at a major daily, former sports writer at an alternative paper and hosting the lowest rated show on the lowest rated sports station make you an "media expert"?

  39. OH S***!!!!! When Gypo Nolan graces us with his/her presence and says "Hold onto your butts," people, something is going down. Going down, for realdoz.

C'mon Gypo, a little hint of a direction we might ponder upon? Norm-contract/retirement related? He's made a few cryptic remarks over the past few weeks. Rhyner retirement related? C'mon, madam or sir, a nibble if ya will.

  40. I took down 421 and 429 (same Anon) -- 421 was quite lengthy -- because there was just too much stuff in there about Richie Whitt's marriage and his wife. None of it was vulgar, but I just thought it was inappropriate for this forum. And also because I generally don't want to mess around too much with the personal lives of the people this blog follows. Some is OK, and I've indulged myself from time to time with public record stuff.

However, a lot of it was OK, and showed some time taken in composition, so I have whacked it down and here it is. Everything after the colon is from an Anon:

I'm a Tunein Pro guy, myself.

I have to say that the Corby bashing gets tiresome. BUT. Equally as tiresome are the jackwad tales of losing his wallet. More so when the story becomes a 2 day, multi segment affair. When your show starts to feature personal minutiae crap like this on a regular basis, which THL does, you've crossed the line from being open about your life and willing to bring it into the show to being way too full of yourself and just plain old obnoxious. Meaning, I do get why so many of you bash Corby.

RW was riding high for a few years in a CBS funded fantasy world. That came crashing down. He blamed everyone around him except his own performance. Failing, or psychologically unable, to realize that CBS didn't care how messed up GW was, if the ratings were there they would've gladly continued on funding the fantasy for years to come.

He then entered into another fantasy world. This one self constructed.

It consisted of his (real) relationship with his soon to be wife, the continuation from his prior fantasy world of partying like a single 20-early 30 something Uptown doucher in order to keep up with said younger fiancé and her friends, all the while blogging about how amazingly super duper things were going, the pathetic state of his former partner and a general throwing under the bus of real or perceived enemies, culminating with copious amounts of boasting about his pizza venture, an ill timed and ill thought out paywall, the publication of honeymoon photos after having left the paying reader with no original content for 2+weeks after having erected the paywall a scant few weeks prior to his departure, the quick demise of said pizza venture (replete with 'this was the plan all along' braggadocio), and finally the tearing down of the paywall and closing of shop due to his new full time positions: guest tv contributor and being a part of a bullpen of bloggers.

I think this about sums it up.

Sadly, unless they're very successful for a very long time, most self promoting attention seekers have a tough go of it. They're sorta manic. The highs find them riding sky high, singing it from the rooftops, crapping on all the doubters and the unnecessary. The lows find them crapping on everyone and everything. Let's hope RW lands on terra firma, finds that he likes it, and becomes the very good journalist he was many many many many moons ago. Not too mention the GMF he, from everything you'd hear, used to be. Or, if the douchery is just an act, he realizes it's a bad act that isn't paying off the dividends he thought it would and gives it up.

  41. What I find interesting to speculate on (of course) is: Why would Corby take his wallet out of his pocket at all? I came up with two highly conjectural scenarios:

    (1) The wireless was going to require that he carry a power supply or transmitter or something in the pocket where he usually kept his wallet.

    (2) He wanted his ass to look good when he was out trolling for college tail with the mic.

Those tail-trolling days are in my past, but there was a time when I carried a wallet that made me look like I was trying to shoplift a marmot with a tumor.

Good luck to TC by the way.

  45. If you're not gonna speak then don't post. Just an attention seeking poster.

Today's fun with country music was horrible but when I found out they didn't realize it was fake, it was all the more funny. I quit listening to country about 10 years ago because 90% of it is crap nowadays. I do enjoy that segment when I'm able to catch it.

  46. Yo Plainsman. I'm the anon whose comment you redacted. It's your blog, so I have no issue with your action. Even if I did, what the f could I do about it anyway? Just wanted to say that the item regarding RW's public airing of the breakup of his first marriage was indeed very public. He did a blow by blow, and it was pretty ugly, in his Observer Sportatorium blog. A few times it leaked over into the print version, too. Just letting you know that not all of the redacted stuff was mere speculation on RW's personal scene.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Dang it, Gypo. What are we talking about here? Come on dude, a bit more info if ya would. This has some ominous tones to it.

T4. You're a long timer. You do recall that Gypo is cryptic, but also that every single time he's thrown down here, something big happens within a matter of a few days time. Yeah, he's not forthcoming, but Gypo's no attention seeker. Only makes an appearance when shit hits fan. Pman will attest to this.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Whoa. When did he say this? He didn't mention it, I don't think, while doing the Simpsons quiz bit with BaD and Corby today. Well, maybe that's why he said a couple of times that he'd never have to worry about working mornings, that he'd be working the Top Ten forever. If true, good for him. Do you know what his role will be? Host, producer, board op?

Well what do you know, just when MTC was beginning to devolve into a flame war infested, troll attracting, once great but now hanging on for dear life of a blog, something seems to be afoot. And after all, isn't the genesis of MTC tied to things being afoot?

So the ever reclusive and enigmatic Gypo Nolan rears his head and deposits upon us a big time tease. As several others have already pointed out, anytime GN appears, something does indeed go down. I'll stick with history and the laws of causality and say that, yes, something's about to go down.

Next question is, of course, has anyone picked up any vibes or slips of the tongue from Norm, BaD, Mike, or Jake (or anyone else for that matter)?

Me. I haven't heard anything that stopped me down. Though I seem to remember a few times recently where Norm has made a remark or two akin to being put out to pasture. Same with Mike. But with Mike that's par for the course, so I put no stock into it. As far as Jake goes, why would the CTO move him into the producer's chair only to make him a host a mere 2 months and change later? That makes no sense. Then again there's a lot that doesn't make sense in the radio game. BaD re-upped, so they're not going anywhere. At least not in the way of leaving the station for another station or market.

This leaves me with a few plausible scenarios as far as major station changes go. (1) Mike's retiring and Jake moving into THL as Corby's cohost OR as producer with Danny moving over to cohost. (2) Norm's retiring and either TSJ or Jake taking his place - solo or perhaps with Donnie. (1&2 entailing Mino becoming producer of BaD, remaining board op for THL.) (3) Norm retires, Bob goes solo, Jake becomes Dan's partner. (4) Donnie is Norm's partner and Jake takes Donnie's place, leaving Mino as BaD producer. (5) With the cross over precedent set by Tom's moving to 103.3, Norm and/or Jake and/or TSJ moves over to 103.3. (6) BaD moves over to 103.3.

Whatever shakes out, if anything (though my gut and the appearance of Gypo tells me something's definitely in the air), it sure is good to get back to some old school MTC exchanges, speculating, and excitement.

DA. Haven't heard from you in a long time. If you're out there, I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

    ReplyDelete
  55. beauty school: "once great"! That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about MTC.

What are the Waste Brothers reporting? [Checked: Nothing, yet, but those gents seem to know stuff so you might check with them from time to time.]

Lew Dickey was in town last week, although quite unlikely he was dictating programming changes.

In nosing around a little among people who sometimes know stuff, I'm not finding any major rumbles.

And Gypo, if I'm not mistaken, has had us holding on to our butts in vain on occasion.

And it could be a Fake Gypo who just gets his jollies by imagining Confessors holding on to their butts.

Although, since I like holding on to my butt, I haven't minded.

    ReplyDelete
  56. A prairie chicken perched upon the sill of the window of our sod hut and suggested that Norm's contract is getting wrapped up. Which doesn't tell us much more than -- more Norm.

    Which is fine with me.

    ReplyDelete
  57. It will be a sad day when Norm retires. I "normally" tune out when he's on although I will listen to him on podcasts but that's usually a Top 10 segment. If someday TSJ moves into a main spot, I will check in more than I do with Norm.

    ReplyDelete
  58. When is Donovan's contract up? He was conspicuously absent from Gypo's list...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Guess I have a faulty memory but I don't recall gypo leaving us holding onto our butts with no payoff. Norm getting an extension is not a hold onto your butt deal. Nor is TC's good news. Only way Norm's extension is, is if it's a 1 yr long thing, which means a farewell tour of sorts. One where they already have his replacement and-or a lineup shakeup in place. Or maybe one where it involves Norm moving over to ESPN like beauty said or something like that. Other than that nothing butt holding about any of this.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Who will replace TC?

    ReplyDelete
  61. So Frank Waste is calling the station about this, actually gets in, and talks to Austin---who he seems to be on familiar terms with. This is from his post at AP1WL. Dunno. Seems like he knows something or someone or some people. IE, an insider. I could care less, but if you have some more info, Frank, do tell.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Do not discount the fact that Lew Dickey was in town. He has destroyed stations in San Franciso and Atlanta. Ratings be damned the almighty dollar is the bottom line. KSCS and WBAP may not fare so well either. If they run off Hal Jay I will end a 40+ year run with WBAP.

Cumulus will be the end of everything we hold dear in this market.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah, it will be kinda sad when Norm retires. Was never a big listener, but he was a staple for such a long time. Sure miss my boy Galloway. If we could just get Corby to retire.

    ReplyDelete
  64. With the exception of dismissals, ala Greggo and Bacsik, it doesn't seem much happens quickly at the Ticket. I suspect anything that's up has been in the works for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  65. @beauty school dropout,

I have not been commenting as much due to the fact that I really do not listen much anymore. When I once listened from about "Muse in the News" to the ending theme of THL, I may now listen to the first hour to 90 minutes of BaD Radio and the first THL segment to see how many days old his "mind" story is. Corby going wireless just to have Danny pester him to ask questions is old. Their obsession with the N-work is old.

With podcasts, Sirium/XM (Ron and Fez), reading the "odd" news on the web, and other sports radio, mostly Dan LeBatard, I listen to them first as they have adapted to my listening needs in a faster manner.

After 20 years (14 of them with me as a listener), the station has gotten stale. As I have stated numerous times before, even when Barry Horn leads with his "the key demographic" cut/paste he always does, it is a broken foundation to generate money from. Content has not changed and has really not gotten fresher. They are just doing the same thing to for an aging audience. As much anti-Leno talk they have done on talk shows...they (Ticket hosts) ARE Jay Leno.

As for local business, I know that the transfer of KTCK to Whitley was denied by the FCC in February, so in essence Cumulus is over their limit of stations (or were as late as last month).

Changes could occur, but layoffs have been rumored for months as Cumulus would follow the lead of ClearChannel, most would impact those off-air, but some talent could be released. I still see Norm filing an age discrimination suit if not renewed.

One of their two country stations will most likely renamed NASH since the company is putting $$$ behind that name nationally to the point that they are looking for a cable channel.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 1) This particular butt holding was for the departure of TC and the change to the Top 10 host. With the amount of hypothesizing and insane shit that gets thrown around on this blog, I consider a change to The Ticket's daily lineup to be butt hold worthy.

    2) I'll save you some time in the next episode of Butt Hold Theater, whenever that may be: Norm just signed a new multi-year deal. Not going anywhere. No never etc.

    3) Fuck the guy who uses "Gypo Nolan" in the post at 8:00. Not me.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Approximately equivalent to the amount of hypothesizing and insane shit that gets thrown around per segment on The Little One.
