You Watch -- T.C. Is Going to Kill

Fare well, T.C.

I mean it.  I think everyone who has commented on his departure has been sincere in wishing him good luck with the new engagement on ESPN Pensacola, WBSR, 1450 AM, 101.1 FM.  (Do they call it "The Buzzer"?  They should.  Maybe T.C. can rename his show.  T.C., I hereby grant you an irrevocable royalty-free license to use it.)

But with all of the well-wishing, there's also a "but  .  .  . " to many of these comments, suggesting some shortcomings that kept him down at The Ticket.

I think this is misguided.  I think we need to do some celebrating.  Not because he's left, but because he's on his way.  I'll come back to this thought.

If I'm reading his Twitter feed correctly, he's going to be "host/PD," so other duties other than on-air, it sounds like.  Good strategy, keep one's hand in management.  He tweets that he's starting on-air on March 24.  I cannot find any announcement of this on the WBSR website or any kind of a press release.  Any radio types out there who can give us more details about T.C.'s show?  Again, his Twitter feed says it's "Good Morning Pensacola."  (Co-hosting with Chad Brillante, the incumbent? Solo shot?)  Nor any chatter out there, really.  I just Googled ["T.C. Fleming" WBSR], just like that, and got seven hits.   Probably not a gigantic media event so nothing should be expected, but thought there would be some account of this other than T.C.'s.   NOT DOUBTING that he's going to be on, just curious about how ESPN is handling it.

I did not hear one second of any of the T.C. sendoff segments, nor have I listened to It's Just Banter on this subject.  I get the impression from Confessors who did that there was an overtone of ill grace from T.C.  I hope that's not the case.

If it is, it's too bad.  I feel pretty positive about T.C. and about this move.

His Ticket persona was among the most interesting I can recall.  He was the Zelig of The Ticket:

--  The eager BaD intern who would do anything for the show and their hosts.

--  The presumptuous insider, pre-on-air days, who rubbed certain other hosts the wrong way.

--  The shy, soft-voiced guy who would show up occasionally on-air, do a roving-mic bit, mocked and humiliated by certain hosts.

--  The ambitious would-be host, given a brief shot with Jake, and the two of them even taking over a Hardline show with Mike in September 2011.

--  The co-host of It's Just Banter with Jake, which gained something of a following.

--  The host of The Top 10, sounding very different both from IJB and from his shy, soft-voiced guy.

--  The more mature fill-in guy whose shot selection had vastly improved.

In the past, I had not been interested in commenting on T.C. because it was so very obvious that he was so very ambitious to be an on-air guy, and I did admire the lengths to which he had gone to move up at The Ticket, but  .  .  .  .    And I thought he did a very, very good job with The Top Ten.  The truth is, and I've admitted this in the link you'll find in the next paragraph, I pulled my punches with T.C.

My past T.C. views got their most thorough airing in the comments to this posting, which featured the T.C./Jake Hardline appearance with Mike R on September 2, 2011:  What Did We All Think of The Hardline Today?  Which, if you take the time to read through it, was exactly that I did not care to engage in extensive T.C. nutkicking because I really did not want to knock a guy who was just starting out.  Reading between the lines, yeah -- I didn't see him as Ticket host material, at least at that point.  Which, combined with the nutkicking from Confessors, did not endear this site to him.  I believe he once referred to it as the worst website ever, OWTTE.

But that was a long time ago.  He's a hard worker, he's very smart -- I don't think he gets enough credit for his brains in these parts, I really don't -- he'll prepare the bee-jeebers out of his Florida shows, and I'll bet he'll do extremely well.

Who would have thought that T.C. would beat all other recent J.V.'s to hosting a drive-time show on an ESPN property?  (Elf wasn't drive; B&S, Matt & Scot -- not ESPN.)   This is a credit to his strategies at The Ticket and with IJB.  Come on, Confessors, we need to do more than just wish the guy luck -- we need to acknowledge that if the standard is personal advancement, T.C.'s tenure at The Ticket was a success, and he made most of it happen by sheer industriousness and, yes, talent.  There is no reason to think that he won't continue to work on his skills and keep his audition tape shiny and current.

I'll go out on a limb here:  I think T.C. has a great career ahead of him.  He's an ESPN team member now.  He's ambitious.  He's smart.  He's interesting.  He's young.  He has an interesting look.  He has a great-sounding media name.  He works hard.  Yes, he can talk.   I think he is going to move up the ESPN ladder and we're going to see and hear a lot more of T.C. Fleming.  And I think we will think that is a good thing.

And that's My Ticket Confession for the day.

Best to you, T.C.

  1. Well Pman, I gotta hand it to you, this one truly is a Ticket Confession. Also gotta say that your recent flurry of postings has been more than welcomed. Starting to feel like the old days of MTC around here again. Digging it.

    Part 1

You've always been in TC's corner. Even though you say you didn't think he was Ticket material early on, you were still in his corner because you purposely withheld your thoughts. I can appreciate all that. Solid on you. Give the dude a chance to get his bearings straight. Cool.

Of course here comes the 'but' that you think is misguided.

    It's not misguided.

Love ya, Pman. Love this site. I stop by here at least 2x per day. But, there's that word again, you make a lot of grand, sweeping pronouncements about a lot of Ticket topics without really being a hardcore Ticket listener. There's a reason why nearly every commenter wishes TC all the best but also thinks that he's just another employee who is moving on, who will soon be a faded memory, and who, quite frankly, came off on a regular basis as a smug dude who thought he was smarter and better than everyone else, and who didn't want to play by the rules.

Since you haven't listened to the IJB podcast pertaining to his leaving or his farewell segment on BaD or his farewell Top Tens, as someone who has, let me assure you that what the commenters are saying about them is absolutely true.

Like everyone else, I'm rooting for TC to make it big out in FLA. So let me just put that out there right up front.

Why would ESPN make a big deal, or any deal whatsoever, about getting a new producer who will also, like Danny or Gribbs or Jake, pop on Jer on the air from time to time for a local morning show for one of its affiliate radio stations? And what I just described is the job that TC will be doing. He is not going to be co-hosting, Pman, he is going to be producing. Producers today, even outside of The Ticket, have become a part of the on air crew. We can thank Howard Stern for that….hello Baba Booey. Again, great opportunity for TC. But MaSS was given its own afternoon drive show by the parent company. Much bigger deal. Other JVers have gone on to do the same thing TC is, some have their own shows now. So let's all send a warm fuzzy TC's way, but let's tap the brakes a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  2. TC was not the Zelig of The Ticket. If you think so, then your recollection or understanding of Zelig is faulty and/or lacking. Zelig was a sponge like, weak character who absorbed, became like, all those around him in order to fit in. If you believe TC fits this bill, you sir, no matter how much you might champion the dude, know not TC.

Shy? Are you joking? In what way is TC shy?

Do anything for the shows and hosts? Like not pay up on bets, keeping change, referring to off air personal matters of others that was decidedly off air stuff in order to be provocative or get a dig in. Is that what you mean?

Mocked. Yes. To this day IMO if you want to find the root of it, look no further than to Corby and his little, and highly successful, campaign to get everyone to think of TC as an elderly lesbian. Okay, yeah, the guy's never gonna win a looks contest. So fn what. In that sense I feel for TC. I really feel for him. Some of what he endured was totally unfair and awful. But. That word again. But. TC also brought a TON of it on himself. Arrogance, an over abundance of self confidence openly expressed via snark and smugness, and a refusal to play the same reindeer game as others all the while saying you're gonna….basically behaving as if you're above it and your JV peers AND your actual superiors….all creates a recipe for hard times which manifest themselves in the form of mockery. So, fuh fuh fuh fuh fuh to grandmother's house we go.

TC is smart. No doubt about it. Pman, I've never once seen someone take a swipe at TC's brains. Smart and mature/wise are different things. Like Jake, TC has the former but lacks the latter. Must say that Jake is beginning to get the latter, TC, as seen in his parting shots, is not. TC also has better sports talk chops than Jake. Listen to IJB and tell me he doesn't. TC OUGHT to do well at his new gig. The only thing that will hold TC back is TC.
    Part 2

That's the deal. I agree with you that the dude could go far. It's up to him though. It's one thing to have the drive and the goods. Another to know how to use them to your advantage. TC needs to use his brains and ambition to further his cause, not deter it. Dude got a helluva break here, thanks in huge part to his buddy Jake. Aces on Jake for doing it, by the way. Here's to hoping he grows up a bit, uses his gifts properly, and carpes the shit out of the diem, yo.

  3. Both the 3:26ers are from me. Sorry 'bout the confusion folks.

  4. Plainsman,
To be fair, TC was hired by an independent station which is an ESPN affiliate. The station pays ESPN a fee for the rights to carry ESPN Radio national programming and a license to use the ESPN name in branding. His show is only two hours because as an affiliate, they must carry portions of both "Mike & Mike" and "The Herd".

ESPN had nothing to do with his hiring and for him to be on a "ladder", he is with everyone else who workers in a smaller market who also has the same affiliate agreement. At best, he may be able to get the opportunity to go to Bristol on a weekend and become a fill-in host, but not much else.

Lastly, keep in mind that on IJB, it was clear that TC really did not search out this opportunity, rather Jake told him about it and then he applied. Plus, this job also has him dealing more with people directly, notably being a manager of employees and I am not sure that he has really illustrated people skills.

  5. No real quarrel with those who didn't much care for T.C. Obviously, there was a time when I myself wondered at the profile he seemed to have achieved. And yes, he sometimes has exhibited a certain thin-skinnedness and self-regard. As I said in the piece, it would be disappointing if he pouted on the way out.

But I do urge you not to ignore the big improvement in his performance, even if the attitude puts you off. Every on-air person has it to some degree. Whoever hired him in Pensacola heard something in the tapes and probably got a positive reference from Cumulus insiders.

T.C. is a bootstrap case. It's the American dream, man. I think he deserves some credit and yes, I think his memory will long endure among the P1, one way or the other.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Like someone said in a previous post. Give it a couple of years and T.C. will be nearly forgotten.

    ReplyDelete
  7. What's up with my comment being deleted? Are we not allowed to use George DiGianni drops here either?

  8. Anyway, everything I've heard and read is that TC will in fact be a co-host as well as producer.

    ReplyDelete
  9. After listening and reading indeed.com for old job postings, TC will co-host a morning drive program, but will also serve as Program Director. He is management now and while I do not know TC personally, he seems not to have the personality to work with, manage, and possibly lead others. He seems too smug, and I cannot imagine him leading a staff meeting with all his pregnant pauses to get his points across. That is where I really agree with the assessments from both Bob and Dan. Actually, I would like to hear the thoughts of Gribble who was the person who actually evaluated TC and the rest of the BaDD Radio interns.

Example: Did he work inside college radio as a "management position"? Has he ever managed others or has he just read management books? That said, he has to start somewhere and that mans Pensacola, FL.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Ticket farm system has become quite thin. Who is even left now?

    ReplyDelete
  11. The Ticket "Farm System" is experiencing turnover. It does this every 3-5 years. A few years from now you'll all be lamenting the loss of the "Great" Mino or the "Great" Machine. Though it wouldn't shock me in the least if Machine moves on pretty soon. Also wouldn't shock me if The Ticket isn't The Ticket we've known for 20 years within the next 3-5 years. Point is this has happened before. The one thing that's remained steady is the daytime lineup. It's the only thing that counts. Sorry "Farm System" guys and their fanboys. Count on this: when the time comes for one of the shows to go buh bye, it won't be replaced with a "Farm System" host. At least none of this current crop. Jake is the lone exception. And he's no longer in the "Farm System" anyway. Jake's a producer on the fast track to being a host, either here at The Ticket or 103.3 or somewhere else in the Cumulus nation. Please see MASS if you want an example of my last point.

    @DA
A lot of people in management are smug.

If you listen to the IJB show covering TC's move you'll catch onto something pretty early on: neither TC nor Jake really know how TC landed the job nor why his new employer wanted him. Seeing how you've stirred up an already percolating pot to a full boil, Plainsman, perhaps you ought to listen to that episode of IJB. I'm thinking new employer man says to himself "hmmmm maybe I can get some of that Ticket magic or at least a hint or a part of the secret recipe if I hire an actual Ticket guy?" or something along those lines. Regardless of all this, none it means TC will or will not succeed. Let's all be adults and wish him well.

  12. I'm all for your choice to champion certain people with your blog, Pman. And you've done that well with TC. However, using the argument that you don't want to nutkick someone who isn't smooth on the air and needs to develop their radio chops doesn't ring true. I'm sure Mitchell Karasik had been given the TC treatment by you, rather than the 29 different posts on this blog that kick his delivery in the nuts. Seriously...search for "mitchell" here on MTC and see what comes up!
Champion TC all you want, but don't act as though you're following some rule. You like the guy. That's cool. I join the other voices in wishing him well.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "I'm sure Mitchell Karasik *wishes he* had been given the TC treatment by you"...sorry for the typo.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @1022
Hit the nail on the head, my man. Pman, you've been served, ROASTED! For reals.

I wonder if all this inordinate amount of love and tender treatment of a JV stems from that same JV's open and public dislike for a certain someone's own blog? Just thinking out loud here.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That station is "mom and pop" owned, as TC said on Bad Radio last week. A mom and pop that carries ESPN programming. I doubt they have little, if any, interaction with the Bristol mothership. I think Plainsman is assuming that next stop for TC is the SportsCenter desk...It's just a small market affiliate, not owned by ESPN. Nothing more.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This is off subject here and P-man might delete, but I remember a few years back, reading some comment about how when George Bush is a televised, sideline spectator supporter of a local sports team, well, that team goes on to lose the game. I kinda started takin note, and people, there is some truth there. The nite SMU played Louisville, tickets going for unprecedented prices, all local celebrities where there for the cameras...Troy Aikman, Tony Romo,ect,ect...and then the camera turns to....George Bush. Grinning as proudly as the day he got gas prices up to 5 buck a gal! SMU goes on to lose remainder of season , and now have the disreputable honor of being the only team in history to be ranked 18th nationally two weeks before bracket selection...to not EVEN MAKE THE TOURNAMENT!! Amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  17. What happens when Mom and Pop sell the station?

    @6:23 Really?

  18. Plainsman wrote: "Who would have thought that T.C. would beat all other recent J.V.'s to hosting a drive-time show on an ESPN property? (Elf wasn't drive; B&S -- not ESPN.)"

Haha. Dallas is a top 5 media market. Pensacola is #124. Which would you prefer?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Methinks TC's disdain for MTC doesn't sit well with PMan. Methinks PMan has gone overboard overcompensating in hopes of 'making good' a bad relationship that never was to begin with. That's what methinks and methinks methinks me right.

    ReplyDelete
  23. btw, I've noticed that too. Everytime I see Presiden Bush at the game, they infact, do lose. Be it Cowboys, Rangers, whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I guess you missed the time Bush was in attendance when the Rangers beat the Yankees to go to their firs World Series. Or the same thing, the next year.

Please take your political bulsh over to either the DMN or Observer com boxes, douche.

  25. I don't know! I remember them losing the World Series. What was the name of the stadium of that disastrous game 6 meltdown?.....oh yeah.."Busch" LOLOLOL!! The man is a curse!

  32. If you're going to write a 2,000 word post about a subject, why not do some of the research online like we did to at least get a few of the most basic facts straight?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Whew Plainsman...these Anons are taking you to the woodshed. Another reason you should require a legit sign in name.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've started to say it a few times in recent months, but I always stop myself. Since T4 brought it back up, I'll back him.

Plainsman, your little place on the web ain't what it was five years ago, and it wouldn't hurt to have posters sign their work. MTC will be better for it, I promise.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I should clarify that - by "not what it was five years ago" I meant that it has a much bigger readership now, and a little accountability wouldn't hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah, now there is a good idea! I'll make up a name like..oh..say..."Deezy", that way, everyone will know who I "really" am!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just when I think Pman couldn't ramp his TC bit up any further, he goes and makes a full TC Confession without even listening to the podcast that many commenters recommended he do - not to mention what several of the other commenters addressed above regarding the move.

TC is a smart kid, that's for certain. I wish him the absolute best and I don't think I've seen anyone really say otherwise. Just about everyone is happy for him. But man...tap the breaks.

  40. Starting to think TC is like oysters and blue cheese, you either love them or you don't. There is not much gray. He gets a shot in Pensacola and good for him. I might even break down and give him a listen.

If Joaquin Castro was a jinx to the Spurs there would be fans of their team telling him to stay home too. W ought to stick with his attempts at art. Decline the invitation to sit in the owner's box sir, please I'm begging ya.

  41. I heard a promo this morning where Norm said he was going to do a segment on his bracket today, so I booked a flight on Malaysia Airlines.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm actually sitting here chuckling.

Let's see: I'm not a good P1, I don't do enough research, I delete way too many comments, I don't delete nearly enough comments, I don't listen enough, I pander to Ticket notables who don't like the site (which includes almost all of them), I like too many things on The Ticket, I tolerate anonymi, the site has changed and ain't what it used to be, the site is stale and too much like it has always been.

Yeah, you know, I think I'm just about where I want to be.

  43. Poll Question:

Will the Tyler Seguin Show return next week? Dan really is a big jerk...

    ReplyDelete
  44. TC has always whipped me. But im also not an IJB P1. He always seemed like a smug smartass...I am proud of him for getting a move up, but as ive said before, did we really lose alot by losing TC?

    ReplyDelete
  45. P-man, have you thought about a "where are they now" piece on ex-ticket folks? I've occasionally wondered what has come of The Sports Princes, Doug Anderson, Roger Wicker, jimmy Christopher, Rocco and on and on with the many guys that have graced the Ticket airwaves. Perhaps help can be found with MTC family and even the occasional fly-by from the current Ticket staff? What say ye?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Just so I got this straight, Pman: You're losing contributors, gaining more trolls, political bulsheizers, people who can't stand for the rest of the gang not to agree with them so they resort to cutting and pasting google search crap with the proper citations to look all legit then cut and paste other google crap on the same subject and act like its their own and not citing the source at all so to look even more legit (looking right at you ***************--cheap but effective little ruse, so I do give you a tip of the cap for using it by not revealing who you are), and this place is just where it needs to be in your esteem. Sweet, bro. Let's let the GIMLfication of this here joint commence!!!! Cuz it already has!!!!!!!!

  47. I just know that if I was going to write a long article that, in several instances, goes against information the article subject himself has already released to the public, I would probably listen/view what the subject has said on the matter before writing said article. You know, to avoid looking like I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Saying all that, it's Plainsman blog. He has every right to do with it what he wants.

Just sharing my two cents. Flame away.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Three anons in a row.
Accusations flying around and I am still doing my best to avoid politics in this forum. I thought I made it clear in the last comment that my feelings towards the sports bad juju of W would be the same if it were someone on my side of the aisle.

If this is to degenerate into flame wars. So be it. I had rather it didn't. If the Pman decided to start using a heavy hand to delete more comments that would be fine by me. If he shut it down altogether I would understand the reasons why.

  49. Had I known Corby was gonna treat us to a travel story, maybe anon 12:41 and I could have got a double passenger discount on that Malaysia Airlines flight!

  50. What I don't understand is why everyone is getting their panties in a wad! It's getting old scrolling through the comments page and seeing a bunch of accusing and disagreeing about really nothing. It's Pman's blog so he can write whatever he wants to write and moderate however he sees fit. It's on blogger.com for crying out loud so if you dislike it so much then start your own and grace us with the diversity of opinion that you want.

For the Anon commentators ...is it really that hard to click on that little Name/URL button and create some sort of ID for yourself?? Are we really that lazy or just plain stupid not to figure that out. I mean your smart enough to type in the CAPCHA so why not go the extra step and add just a little shred of credibility to your comment.

I visit this site and read comments to discuss the ticket, not to read trolls critiquing and being Mr. Editor on everything that is said by Pman or others. It's a BLOG. Anons need to stop their bitching and add something good to conversation. I'm out (gun cocked....boom)

  51. I can't believe the nutkicking that Norm got yesterday evening on the Hardline regarding his expense report.

First of all - really? Isn't there some sort of rule internally about putting that stuff on the air.

Second - If I were Norm, I would be pissed. Some of what they were saying went over the line of "good natured".

Third - Just because Corby and Mike and Danny don't expense things doesn't mean that they shouldn't be expensed. 66 miles to the airport at the current reimbursement rate is close to $40. I hope that they at least keep track of the mileage that they drive each year and use it on their yearly taxes. I would think that would be a significant chunk of change. If they don't, they should fire their accountant.

Yes, I did find it funny that his "expense report" was a legal pad listing and not on the official form. But, I think that most of what they did/said during that segment was over the line.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm the president of the Anti-Norm fanclub. I wrote the comment in the last post about how I no longer listen to Norm at all. And even I thought that segment by Corby on Norm's expense report was over the line.

  64. OK so I listened to Good Morning Pensacola for the first time this morning. Heard the last 30 minutes. All I will say is that after listening, it does not surprise me at all if owner is trying to figure out how they are going to integrate the two very different styles of TC and Brillante

  66. It would be kindsa awesome if it was an April Fool's prank.

Who's been hosting the Top 10?

  67. He is in Florida but says he won't be on the air until 4/1 at the earliest

  68. If it is an April Fools joke it would be a great one. And we heard it here first. @bg

  69. Sorry, I have to disagree. I think T.C. has a big bag of nothing. He's terrible doing tickers. He's terrible hosting the top 10. For a station in Pensacola to hire him as PD & morning show hosts shows how bad radio in Pensacola must be.

Now if we could just get someone in another state to hire Jake The Ticket would be back to it's old greatness.

  70. I agree that TC's role with the Ticket doesn't make him stand out the way he can. After listening to a couple of IJB podcasts, he's totally different. I'm sure other station head hunters listening to the complete portfolio. BTW, Jake and him do have quite the potty mouth but if you know that...it's not a problem.

  71. I agree with T4. Hes not a standout. I just find it weird and interesting that someone from a Florida station would hire him based on what really IJB. haha.. I think it could be a little funny to listen to for a few mins at a time.
