This Is More of a Radio Question Than a Ticket Question

Yesterday at around 4:30 The Hardline mistakenly ran two ads simultaneously, one right on top of the other.

I thought -- someone will catch that, push a button, and fix it promptly.  But it didn't happen.  The ads ran for their full length, completely incomprehensible gibberish, until the next ad came on, which had no similar problem.

It got me wondering:  Who at the station listens to the station?  At any given time, who knows what audio is going over the air?  I guess I thought that would be the board operator, but perhaps he has other duties as the ads play.  I picture Jeff Catlin with the station on in his office, but he has duties for stations other than The Ticket, and at any given moment he may not be near a radio or iHeart or SportsDay or whatever.  Of course, the P1 listens intently and I'm sure Tweets or emails directly when he hears the occasional error.

Anyone know who actually "supervises" the minute-to-minute sound of the station?

What in the world is with Gordon today?  Starting with the Observation Deck and continuing through Muse in the News, he's operating at Paul Harvey speed (and even sounds a little like Paul Harvey from time to time).  I'm thinking some meds.  Something's off -- actually, it's not really unpleasant to listen to, just sounds like someone's finger's on the reel. Uncharacteristically mellow -- it sounds like he aged ten years overnight.

I used to follow baseball more than I do now, but I do follow a couple of teams a bit.  Not much anymore.  And, of course, I listen to SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket, a local sports-talk station.

I'm completely embarrassed that I never heard of Giancarlo Stanton until this morning.

  1. I have heard of Stanton, but he doesn't get a lot of press. He is quite talented, but I'm as surprised as anyone that he got offered the richest contract in American sports history. Usually, the highest contracts are for players who not only produce, but also bring fans in. Perhaps he's a big draw in his hometown.

  2. I would think that someone who claims to be so in the know when it comes to the operations of The Ticket would know this already. You claim to have all this contact with folks at the station and you don't know the answer to a question this simple? Wow.

  3. I'm only listening to White Elephant Day afternoon drive if its 3 hours of Gordon kicking TC in the nuts.

TC and Jake during the afternoon? Seems fixed.

  4. 9:30, I'm not sure what website you think you're posting on.

I've written time and time again that I have almost zero contact with the anyone at the station. Never met anyone there. Never spoken to anyone there. Once in a very great while I'll get a tidbit or an attaboy, and sometimes someone leaves a comment here, but it's quite rare. Jeff C dropped a line a few weeks ago but that's singular.

So perhaps you visit a different site that offers the "claims" you are recalling.

  5. Every year, I think there's a little bit of "fixing". I'm not a TC hater, but I'll reevaluate after a 3 hour show.

Bob in the 10-12 shift: meh. Bob can handle a show on his own, I was hoping for a less experienced host like Jake or Danny.

Has Norm ever done tickers on W.E.D.?? That's what I voted for.

  6. Re: The spots- Sometimes the computer just does that and there's not a lot that can be done without bringing things to a complete stop. Often it's easier to just white knuckle it for the 30 seconds or so it takes for one of the spots to run out and just make a note to make good those spots as soon as possible than it is to stop it down and re-rack.

And sometimes we're just juggling multiple things in here and things slip by. Sorry about that, chief. We're aware that it sucked and we'll endeavor to suck less next time.

  8. Plainsman--do you recall a young Marlins sensation from a few years back named Mike Stanton? Same guy. New name.

  9. I've noticed Gordo sounds drugged for the last few days. Hope this isn't the beginning of Greggo part two.

  11. So TC gets the PM Drive slot. So much for all that supposed hate for him out there. Seems like Cat knew what he's doing after all when he rehired TC and later gave him the permanent Ticker position. I guess it is just a few sad sacks that keep posting the TC hate on MTC.

Good on ya, TC. And keep lookin' up to the stars, cuz that's where it all is.

  12. It does seem like there was some doctoring of the slots by someone. Wasn't Gordo leading the 10-12 voting as of Friday? Somehow Sturm slips in at the last second? On the other hand, I could be wrong considering I didn't pay much attention beyond those political spots Gordo and Jub ran.

TC? I've always given him a pass ever since he got corky's panties in a bunch over his after-hours call at home. However, I think he's going to fumble the ball during this 3-7 spot knowing so many schadenfreuders will be tuning in. Keep an eye out for a possible Ragonk 2.0 after his shift.

  13. TC did "get" the PM drive slot, not by votes but by the Cumulus Illuminati wanting it that way. Just like Bob didn't get "voted" in the 10-noon slot. TC was paired with Gordo on purpose- to prove without doubt that TC was the shooter on the grassy knoll in '63. And don't tell me the age doesn't line up, 'cause we all know birth certificates can be doctored. Only a government cover up can keep it off the air. Right? Whose with me?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Did I hear the Catman say there were four times as many votes cast on the last day?

Also, wasn't Gordon accused of doing something to rig an online vote a few years ago?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The way the voting was set up didn't make a whole lot of sense anyway. Gordon could conceivably have won both the 10-12 AND the 3-7 slots. Bob may have not led voting for ANY slot. That applies to other slots and other hosts too. I'm sure some spots had to be massaged.

  16. Sorry James, Stanton is not from Miami-Dade, he is from Los Angeles. The Marlins have to spend money and the opt-out which Stanton has does coincide with the Marlins negotiations for a new local TV contract. Their low paying current contract was signed in 2005 and goes through 2020.

As for the station, if in fact TC does host the PM drive shift, then we are going to get full of the, "umms, err, I mean...". I just expect not to be impresses since he has yet to do so in his years at the station. He cannot and will not win me over. On WED, TC is just a punchline in waiting.

I wonder how much Gordo will try to "mentor" him as opposed to really pester him on his whole Pensacola fiasco, but I think that Junior would try to spend a segment on it. (Granted, while he is not obligated to say it, I think there is still much more to the story which TC has told the Ticket listener).

  17. It would not surprise me if there was a last minute flood of votes. How many of the dirty P1s were out there hitting refresh and voting?

My main goal was accomplished, Dan and Danny on the morning shift. Beyond that I did not care. We had Ty Walker Chicken last year talking up Star Wars and wrassling and that was fine with me.

I liked the fact we could vote this year. Instead of listening to Dan maneuver his way to avoiding mornings he had them thrust upon him. I will no doubt be tuning in for the 530 filibuster to see what the Knox City Knocker brings, even if it is a total give up.

  18. DA, I wrote that comment in a hurry and was very unclear. I meant that perhaps we haven't heard a lot about Stanton--by either of his first names--but he was quite popular in the town he's been playing in (that is, Miami), so he might be as popular there as Nolan or Pudge was here, but without much national buzz.

  19. You're right, P-Man, Cat does have the station running in his office plus engineers are practically by the dial. Like Jer said it would become a much uglier situation to stop the spot set when a commercial "refires" itself, so usually you just tell the proper people it happened and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I gotta say, Jer and Justin, that I like the mental picture I get of you guys "white-knuckling" a commercial firing itself off on top of another commercial. Malfunctioning systems have a way of causing physiological reactions in those of us responsible for them - I can almost feel your increased heartrate, spontaneous armpit sweat, and contained panic. I know you know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for pulling back the curtain ever so slightly, in any case.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have been a victim of that back in the dark ages of carts. (think of a souped up 8 track tape)Bad erase job or two tracks taped at the same time. I've also seen a robot station run off of reel to reel tapes where two or more players would fire off at the same time. The on staff engineers reactions were always worth your pay that day.

The idea of a computer controlled board blows my mind. Do they control volume levels too?

Never let it go to 0, never into the red. :D

    ReplyDelete
  22. TC wasn't voted to afternoon drive because he's popular. He was voted there because P1s like train wrecks. And this pretty much guarantees one.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jeremy: Thanks for the "Get Smart" reference.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Will not be listening to any of the white elephant day between 3-7 thanks to the presence of Jake & TC. They both have nothing. Unless Gordo is able to lure TC into a Rocco trap and TC cuts his own throat, I won't be tuning it. The less I hear of those 2 the better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Uh oh, the station is on its way out, 322 isn't going to listen on WED. Yet it will listen if Gordo throws TC under the bus. Question, 322: If you don't listen, how will you know if Gordo does it?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm just glad that was construed as a fun happy Get Smart reference and not a snarky Jub-esque "chiefing".

  27. Seeing Tyson Chandler dominate is so great. Not only is it helping the Mavs win games but, it continues to prove how wrong Jake was about Chandler. Glorious.

  28. great discussion by the musers this morning about "super powers". These type of segments are when the musers are at their best. so much better than listening to them fall all over themselves to praise the cowboys.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @9:36... in stark contrast to my morning Musers experience between leaving the house and commute, which unfortunately consisted of a sappy, milquetoast feel-good segment about Jub's kid, followed by the latest spectacularly unfunny Marge bit.

And people wonder why I dislike The Musers...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can't believe Junez didn't get a WED ticker slot. I wanted a sequel to last year's dramatic "Flesh for Fantasy" ticker.

Sturm getting 10-12 doesn't surprise me. He and Jub were campaigning very hard for that slot not to go to Gordo.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Actually, Regonk Dykes (great name, by the way), no one wonders why you dislike The Musers. Not a soul.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @12:27 Not true. Not true at all. There are many places to discuss things Ticket-y – where we speak to each other with identities, even!

And can I get a little (read: a LOT) less Texas Christian in my damn Dan Homer Call? It's unlistenable now.

I'm going to PRE-answer everyone about to ask me why I even listen to The Ticket if I don't like anything. I do like lots of stuff. In fact, I like everything but George (half of the time) and TC (all of the time).

  34. PMAN-
Typically this goes to the APD...which now the Ticket doesn't have, so maybe SBass in his new Sports Director position. BUT, the GM, PD, APD, Marketing Director, Traffic/Continuity Director, and GSM are all generally listening at one time or another and are responsible to communicate issues with each other whether they are their issue or someone else's.

  36. TC improving? That's the funniest thing I've ever read on this website.

  37. @-Not Spittle, Not Dawson, Not Richie

A couple of Ticket employees, including Jer, have already chimed in on this. Of course, their answer is different from yours. So much for your insider perspective. Just stop it, dude.

  39. can tell the bye week is over as we are now having our asses whipped with Cowboy talk. noted Romo apologist the sturminator actually compared Eli to Quincy Carter today. Romo & Cowboy homers at The Ticket are amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. WTF else would they be? Go to any city in the world, their sports radio stations are going to be supporting their home town teams.

Cowboys are 7-3, Romo has a 107 QBR, so ya, there's good stuff happenin. Get over it. Jesus.

    ReplyDelete
  41. They've got Eli, we've got Romo...give me Romo.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Eli has 2 SB rings.
Romo has 1 playoff win & losing record in December.
    I'll take Eli.

Ticket will be ridiculous today. Noted Romo homers Sturm & Corby will be unbearable. They were trolling twitter last night telling us all how Romo is the greatest QB to ever play. Nauseating.

The December collapse is going to be so funny.

Running up #'s against 3-8 teams is great for fantasy football. Lets see what happens when they play good teams. Beating TN, Jax, and NYG is great.

  43. They have Odell Beckham we have Dez...I'll take Odell Beckham. Mainly because after Beckham makes a great play he walks over the sideline and shuts the f up.
