(2) There seems to be a lot more hockey talk these days on non-BaD radio. Yeah, I know the station broadcasts the games, but other than BaD, until recently the station ignored the Stars to the extent possible. Somehow The Hardline was coerced into interviewing new owner Tom Gaglardi. The Musers this morning did a rapturous segment on last night's losing effort (shootout). Maybe it's because the Stars have crept into the decidedly non-elite playoff-eligible club. Anyway, it seems there is suddenly more enthusiasm for the sport among showgrams that haven't touched it in the past.
(3) Listen up: I thought Gordon's Joe Odom (Lamar's pop), yesterday's 8:40 bit and today's 6:40 repeat, was absolutely hilarious. Funniest thing I've heard on the station in awhile. Amazing vocal transformation. Didn't find it offensive or racist. But I was thinking: OK, this bit plainly calls on stereotypes of older, possibly unemployed black men. The accent; the language; the topics (gambling, smokes, women). Is this the sort of thing that people who accuse The Ticket of racism are referring to? As I say, I thought it was a fair bit, but it was pretty ethnic stuff.

About #3: I was laughing but I was also cringing. BaD has recently been doing a Donny-led segment deciding if things are racist or not. There's a fine line between good, harmless fun and Billy Crystal in blackface. Sure, Billy's bit was supposedly good fun, but it crossed a line that has been taboo for at least 2 decades now. Gordo's Joe Odom also crossed that line, IMHO. Same thing with fake Dwayne Calloway.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so what about Gas Cap Louie, Clarence Murphy and other characters that use voices with certain characteristics that could be considered "black"? Those aren't based on real people. I think that's a big distinction.
what would make it racist, the fact that it is a white guy doing saying/doing the bit. go watch a black comedian, they do the same bits gordo did, Hell Ced the entertainer did the mechanic bit on knigs of comedy. And black comedians use white stereotypes all throughout their shows. And guess what, everyone laughs, white, black, asian, it doesnt matter.

ReplyDelete(ii) I have a feeling that the stepped-up, across the board, hockey talk is in part due to genuine interest/excitement and in part due to "encouragement" by Cat, etc., to highlight a team that seems to be on at least a temporary uptick...and that happens to find its radio home on said station.
(iii) While I can see where the bit could make some a bit queasy, I don't find this sort of bit to be out of line. Why? Because it's based not only upon a caricature of a real-life stereotype, but also on an admitted drug addict. Now if stereotypes were portrayed as such on a daily or even weekly basis, then I think there's some fire to that smoke. However they aren't. However, I do find it problematic when a host or peripheral takes it upon himself to make fun of or use as a comedic foil an ethnicity for no reason whatsoever other than that they find it funny. I've given this example before: the hypothetical concerning being a Chinese Jimi Hendrix. That's where you cross the line from poking fun at an individual or a caricature/stereotype to basically saying there's something inherently wrong with being a certain ethnicity. And with respect to the example I've given, that is what is being said--and there's no getting around it.
I think it crosses the line once you establish that the subject of the bit is somehow less than human because of their differences from the overwhelming white, male majority. Fake Joe Odom was a very funny take on an archetype (the Old Black Man) that is very often celebrated (e.g. the old guys in "Coming to America," or Wash). The Fake Michelle Wie is racist. Junior Miller talking about Maurice Carthon listening to music and drawing in coloring books, minutes after saying he only had his job because he is black, is racist. Joe Odom is not.

Cobes owes Junes an apology, but he isn't going to get one til this thing plays out. Anyone else remember Cube's public love of Stone Cold Shawn Bradley? Cubes is trying to get something out of Lamar, and he's not about to say anything bad about him publically.

#1 Their paid to do so.
#2 Stars are more entertaining this year/New ownership.
#3 Musers have had Razor on for years...even when they were terrible and before they were the station of the Stars.
Didn't think too mch of Joe Odom bit..it was ok..not great. Didn't see much racism in it.
Yep, I think the Ticket is definitely spending more time on the Stars because they're paid too also. They don't have any covereage of the other sports in town and that's their bread and butter. Maybe they're trying to get some hockey listeners? Not sure, but it's got to be because they are the Flagship for the Stars.
ReplyDeleteUmm, the Stars don't pay the Ticket squat. Typically, the Ticket pays the Stars for the rights to broadcast their games, and gets to keep whatever coin they make on ad sales.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Ticket had, and lost the Cowboys, I remember Rhynes making a big deal about how the Ticket actually lost money on the endeavor.
thought it was hilarious too. It'd be nice if people could understand the difference between racism and good-natured parodying of the quirks that comprise the society we live in. It's basically society's ability to poke fun at itself, something I think the Ticket does to genius levels, thus making the world a better place. Heart.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Anon, but like another on this thread said, there is a difference between poking fun or using an archetype and something that is utterly demeaning. There's a huge difference. Sometimes I think, at least some, at The Ticket fail to see that point. One of these days it might bite them on the ass, and bite deeply and painfully at that.
