June 18, 2012

7:53 a.m. --  Musers just stole some of my thunder.  I was going to ask when golf galleries came to be dominated by assholes.  I swear, I saw some swings where some moron started hollering before the club head struck the ball.  Is there nothing that can be done about this?  I'm serious, can't we beat some of these idiots with sticks or something?

*     *     *

George said BaD will recap Summar Bash at 2:10.  Not sure I'll be able to be by the station at that time, so someone please listen and report.  It couldn't possibly have been as dreary on-site as the on-air product (and host/Danny observations) made it seem.

Around 5:45 George thanked P1's for coming out on Friday, but that was it for Summa Bash talk on The Musers.

*     *     *

Whatever happened to Dr. Gary Tylock, whose lasik ads used to rival those of Dr. William Boothe?

*     *     *

I'll have a lot more to say about this in the days to come, but:  Christ, even gentle George is overdriving his mic this morning.  And that's not George's fault -- he's not hollering.  This is just bad sound design, bad equipment, something.  (It is very unlikely to be bad board operation -- no one on the scene would let that sound out without trying to fix it if he could.)   When I say "overdriving," I'm not intending to speak technically.  I don't know if he's "pegging" the VU meter, as we used to say back in the bad old analog days.  I'm talking about that haze of fuzz that surrounds the sound of guys speaking into microphones.  And I'm listening to 104.1, in its range, on a very good radio.  The Ticket just sounds bad.   Some parts of it sounds a whole lot worse than other parts, so there will be more to come on this.

  1. Withleather.com today has footage of someone yelling "Yabba Dabba Do!" when Graeme McDowell teed off on the 15th, and bonus footage of someone interrupting Costas' interview with Webb Simpson with bird calls. I was at the Nelson for a an hour or so and heard a couple "GETINTHEHOLE!" yells. Stay classy, humanity.

  2. It's what happens when you cross alcohol with frat and ex-frat boys (let's face it, the overwhelming majority of frat boys never cease being frat boys, e.g., Corby). It's a worst case scenario played out each and every weekend. And it doesn't help that you have players like Bubba Watson (who encourages it by acting like one of them) and Ricky Fowler (who is one of them) and Tiger (who has made it OK to scream curse words, throw clubs, and act like an a-wipe in general...and it's rubbed off on many of the younger players, who now think it's acceptable).

  3. I did find the lack of Summer Bash talk this morning to be interesting. I guess it didn't go over as well as it has in the past? I'm sure we'll get a more realistic picture of how things went from Dan. He seems to pull back the curtain more than anyone else up there these days. Personally, the only thing I like about Summer Bash, Ticketstock, Guys Night Out, and all the rest is the roundtables. Though I must admit that Friday's weren't the best I've ever heard. There was almost a boredom or lack of interest feel to them.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I think some of the comments on here about lack of interest are dead on. A few of the hosts really seem tired of doing these events year in and year out. They seem tired of their jobs honestly. As much of a dream job as it seems to any of us, doing the same thing day in and day out for 20 years can get old. And it seems, especially for some of the guys who have been at the Ticket since its inception and were in radio gigs prior to the Ticket, that they're just flat out tired of doing what they do. People still listen, ratings are still high and they still make a ton of money but it really seems like their passions for the job have faded. Especially after the move.

    ReplyDelete
  5. It doesn't help that the meat of the round tables had Norm on them talking sports.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yep. WAY too much Norm in the roundtables.

  7. Is it the fact that the ticket's ratings are up because of the on air product, or are we all tuning in waiting for the next train wreck?

    ReplyDelete
  8. bdog, I think it mostly has to do with habit and the fact that in reality there is no competition. If one of the other two stations would significantly step up their game (hiring away a Ticket host would go a long way), then I think you'd see The Ticket's ratings take a hit, perhaps even a serious hit in certain time slots.

  9. BaD Radio isn't even going to talk Summer Bash now. So odd how the station is distancing completely.

    ReplyDelete
  10. This apparent distancing from Summer Bash does seem odd. Usually each show goes out of their way to extol the greatness of the P1 for making it the best one ever. Come to think of it, there's usually an in-house promo/ad with Conrad saying something like "Aw shucks, you P1s did it again." I've yet to hear anything like that. Kind of strange. I'm reading differing accounts on this blog from commenters. Some say it was well attended, others not. So I've no idea what actually went down on Friday at Sneaky Pete's. From the lack of noise on the station's end today, I'd have to say that it didn't go too well. I wonder if something happened, something legal-ish. Maybe that's why the mute button seems to have been pushed on all things Summer Bash?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I was there and it was the usual crowd. Add the P1's to the usual Sneaky Pete's Friday night crowd and you have overcrowding. There was nothing different from this year's Bash than the last five years. Maybe that's the problem or maybe because of this site it is being portrayed that it is worse than it really was.

  12. What's the access to the hosts, Jv hosts, board ops, and Ticker guys like? Do you get to have any sort of meaningful interaction with them, or is it more of a zoo atmosphere? Zoo as in they're on display, if you will, but behind a protected area where you can't actually mix and mingle? I've never been to a Ticket event, so I'm curious.

Interested to see how The Hardline treats Summer Bash, if at all.

  14. Was I the only one who heard Mike say he wasn't going to be there in 2 years? During the opening segment, Corby made a mention to Mike that he wasn't yet comfortable in the new place. He said "Give it 2 years" Mike replied "I'm not going to be here in 2 years".

    ReplyDelete
  15. It looks like the only mention of Summer Bash we're going to get from The Hardline is a cursory mention from Mike coming off a break: "Thanks for coming out. It was a good time." This sure has a different feel to it from other years and day afters of any and all P1-Ticket event. I wonder if there's anything deeper here?

    ReplyDelete
  16. bdog, I think it was another patent Mike "I'm old and had it" joke. I doubt there's anything to it. But who knows what's what anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  17. First time, long time. Enjoy the site...

There might be a couple of explanations for this:

    1) It was a rather sportsy weekend with the US Open, NBA Finals, and Rangers so maybe they will talk it about it more later in the week.

    2) Maybe no audio was recorded of the Timewasters and rather than bitch about it and get their hand slapped they are just pretending the event never happened.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm not a profound student of Ticket events or the TimeWasters, but it seemed like this year there was little anticipation of the latter. I heard Corby say one day he was writing a song, but that talk drifted into whether he was going to "Norm" again. And I gather most of the TW stuff was either covers or parodies from years past. (Any originals? Advise.)

I have heard it said (by hosts) that Dan puts the most work into his lyrics and they're always great. Did Dan do any songs?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ok here's another. Am I the only one who has a nervous feeling concerning this juneteenth remote at the black barbershop that BaDD is doing tomorrow? I know I'm not missing a minute of it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. They do the Juneteenth episode from there every year. It's nothing different. The Timewasters were the same as every year. A few new songs and the usual classics.

    ReplyDelete
  21. To +1 on the above Anon, BaD has done shows there before. I can't remember any particulars but I remember listening for fireworks and got sparklers instead.

Flashy and shiny, but think the owners and clientele are basically patting BaD and Donnie on the head. (While Dan does his best to be patronizing.)

My question is that I heard they would be there from 2 -3. Does this mean they start the show from one place and then drive down during a break or did I hear this wrong?

  22. Here's something interesting and Cumulus related. It looks like Dave Ramsey is leaving KLIF (a Cumulus station) for KRLD.

  23. 1080 isn't relevant anymore. They haven't been since they lost the Rangers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Could a problem with the Time Wasters be that the band is too good? Too many "real" musicians (not to mention that 3 Ticket hosts now perform professionally)? The wheels-off aspect has been virtually eliminated.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jake and TC supposedly stole the show with their "Festival Corby" song, but there has been nary a mention of it on the air.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jake and TC showed that the wheels-off-ness of it is still present, but I agree with Ron that it was more interesting when only Ticket personnel were responsible for making all the sound. That was where most of the pre-show drama came from. They'd actually have to get together and rehearse a few times. Now they just show up and perform, for the most part. Half of the show might as well be backed by karaoke CDs. Don't get me wrong, I have great respect for the band, I just agree that the potential for a serious musical meltdown made thing more interesting.

  27. That Dave Barnett moment from last night's 8th inning was truly bizarre. I went to bed in the 5th, so I missed it live, but my wife told me this morning that she rewound it a couple times to make sure she heard what she thought she heard. The Musers were suggesting it might have been a stroke. Here's the audio, in case you missed it: http://www.bbtia.com/the-clubhouse/2012/6/19/the-strangest-moment-of-dave-barnetts-broadcasting-career.html

  28. @Anon 6:37 AM: You know not what you speak of, so perhaps you should refrain from doing so. Check out the ratings, friendo, 1080, does better than 1310.

      On what planet?
Here on Earth, the little ticket is killing KRLD. AM and FM, both..

6 plus the ticket is 10th, KRLD is 20th. I think we know who doesn't know what they speak of.

  29. Something must've went down at the SB. Something that has something to do with some sort of legal issue. What explains this treatment of it? It's like it didn't happen. They talk more about a GNO than this SB. This smacks of the silence that ensued after Greggo was let go. And we all know that was due to legal issues. Surely it wasn't so bad that they're too embarrassed to talk about it. Something's fishy here.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think Ron and birq have hit upon something. There's nothing amateur hour about the Time Wasters anymore. You're right, they might as well use a karaoke machine. I also echo the kudos to the musicians, as they are great. But still, the "hey, those guys are just like me and my buddies would be up there" vibe has long been killed. I think a lot of it has to do with not wanting or not being able to put the amount of time it would take to do it like they used to, the fact that it's much easier to use other musicians, and let's face it, egos. By now, the hosts, especially those who are in bands, do not want to be seen as anything less than professional. While understandable, it nevertheless makes for more of a distant, remote, experience for the P1. I also agree with those here who say that it's time to pare these events back or make some changes. Sometimes I think there's too many Ticket events. I remember after the fantastic success of the first Guys Night Out, oh so many years ago, they began to do one nearly every month or so. So much so that they became dull and not so well attended in pretty quick order. They learned their lesson and laid off of them for nearly a year. When it was brought back, it was just like the first one. Since then, that's how Guys Night Out has been handled. I know Summer Bash and Ticket Stock are annual events, but they seem too close to one another. I think that's why by the time Summer Bash rolls around, you have what appears to be host disinterest.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dan mentioned today that they may be playing audio from Summer Bash(Time Wasters) today if it is available. Seems to be the usual problems with no one recording or cutting the audio.
    We shall see.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Maybe that's the rub.....they're keeping mum due to CTO mandated gag order on all things technically or Cumulus related. And so if they can't say something positive, then they say nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. On air staff has continued to make anti-Cumulus remarks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The stream just died.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Stream went down during the first 2minutes of CQH and came back up when Mike threw it to break at the end of the last segment. Wonder if the transition is underway?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Good Lord. You guys kneejerk worse than Corby. Maybe they aren't talking about Summer Bash because there isn't really anything to talk about. Maybe they finally realized that the 90% of listeners that don't attend events don't want to listen to every show do an entire segment on the event.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think you're wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Anon 12:03

Nothing matters to the Ticket except M 25-54. That's all that matters and has ever mattered in sports talk radio.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The Hardline talked briefly about Summer Bash and the fact that Engineering did indeed F up again and just today got the Timewasters audio and hadn't cut it up yet.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Dave Barnett incident made me think of something I have long wondered about the Ticket: Do the shows (Musers, Norm, BaD, HL) discuss with each other what they are going to talk about? Especially when an event, like the Barnett event, where its likely that they all have something to say, occurs.

I thought about it because every show discussed it at length, and had pretty much the same thing to say about it. Is that bad?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Grubes midget friendJune 19, 2012 at 9:58 PM

    Ham neck-
no it's not really bad. Your AVERAGE listener listens a finite number of times per day for a certain length of time. The vast majority of listeners (seeming unlike the vast majority of posters here) are not listeners for multiple hours per day. So the people that hear the Musers discuss Barnett, are diffferent from the people that hear Norm, B&D or the HL discuss the same thing.

Through dissection of the ratings stations can tell how many people listen every quarter hour, how long they stick around, even when they tune in and tune out.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @7:21pm: Please quit talking logic and sense. It really kills the apocalyptic mood around here.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well that would fly in the face of the way both Summer Bash and Ticketstock Time Waster "gigs" have been treated since each events' inception, every single year, until now.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Musers said the Hardline would be playing Summer Bash audio because the audio had "finally been recovered", echoing the Hardline's blaming of engineering yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And there you go, problem solved. Still, I wonder why they didn't say this on Monday? Why not just say, "Hey we know you're probably wanting to hear the Time Waster audio, we're working on it and we'll play it ASAP." It seems like this station, from the lowliest of peripheral to the hosts to the CTO, can do nothing right anymore. Ratings be damned.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I know this horse is long dead and desiccated, but I think it still deserves a good beating now and again: Why the hell is it acceptable that the stream has been in complete and total disarray for weeks now? Weeks. It was shaky at times even before the move to Victory, but it's been iffy at best since then. The move to iHeartRadio began in May. We're 2/3 of the way through June and the Cumulus cash cow is still not available through the app. I know some people have had some luck with other apps, but I haven't been able to receive it for a couple weeks now. This has to be losing Cumulus ad revenue, so how is this okay?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think there's anything wrong with the stream, except for yesterday at around 6:30. It's been working perfectly fine for me on my iphone 4 via TuneIn Pro over wifi and 3G.

It seems more like a phone, provider, or app issue than a true stream issue.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Echoing Shaggy - The stream itself has been stable via the internet (http://77.67.109.134/KTCKAM?streamtheworld_user=1), but I'm two weeks behind in content. I'm actually pretty shocked about that.

(not actually sure where that IP points to; I think DP figured it out - streamtheworld.com or somesuch)

Regarding Summer bash audio, The Unticket used to have a super-strong P1 (Juice) who would go and tape all of the events and upload them a day or two before the Ticket staff could. I think being a day or two behind the curve is actually par for the course for them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. BaD and Hardline both played SB audio today. A fine showing by IJB.

  53. I agree Anon 4:28 PM, the best part of the Ticket isn't even on the station. Not a surprise, given the CTO.

    Very astute observation.
