Some Smart Radio Guy Read This Right Away and Tell Us What It Means

http://rbr.com/cbs-radio-cumulus-pact-for-cbs-sports-radio-network/

I have a feeling it may mean as much or more for The Ticket than it does for The Fan.

You may comment even if you are not a Smart Radio Guy.

[Thanks to Confessor Ron for calling this to our attention.]

  1. With respect to KTCK, it says: "The following Cumulus radio stations in the Top 100 markets will broadcast CBS Sports Radio programming" but doesn't say how much or when.

With respect to KRLD, it says: "The following CBS Radio stations will add various components of CBS Sports Radio programming to their lineup."

Anyone have any inside scoop on this, let us know. It is hard to believe that KRLD and KTCK will be broadcasting the same CBS offerings.

This could be seismic, or it could be just a shuffling of overnight/weekend syndicated programming.

    Someone out there knows, and he or she is going to tell us in 3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . .

  2. This jumped out at me:

"Opportunities for affiliates to regionalize their lineup by choosing from select programs currently featured on CBS Radio or Cumulus sports stations."

  3. Hey, there's a thread for this. That was quick. As I said in the previous thread, I think this is just going to be what the Ticket uses after hours. I have no idea what it means for the Fan.

    ReplyDelete
  4. My first thought is that this will pertain to weekend, late-night, and perhaps the Top Ten/Dan Patrick hours. This might also mean the end of weekend local programming (Ticket Sports Sat/Sun, MaSS, CDS, The Orphanage, Tee Box, George Dejohn, Race Week, and whatever else I left out). This alone could be pretty dramatic. Then again, it might only mean changes where Dan Patrick, Joe Morgan, and Yahoo Sports are concerned. The latter scenario is absolutely no big deal. AND then again, this could mean an absolute retooling of our beloved station.

I concur that it would seem unthinkable that CBS/Cumulus would want two competing stations in the same market. So what does this mean? The merging of the two stations? How on God's green earth might that work? (And for anyone thinking "hmmm, Greggo/Rhynes reunion...let's get the band back together??!?!?!?" No frickin' way, kids.) Maybe this will be the signal change that we've all so very much wanted the station to have? Talk about stepping up your game, reception and range wise!

This could be a very very cool and exciting thing, it could mean little to The Ticket, it could mean the end of The FAN, and it could mean the end of The Little One as we know it -for the decidedly worst.

  5. This sounds like a strategic partnership, which would mean it may help Cumulus stations that need/want the help. It obviously would not mean anything dramatic would happen to hark the Ticket. And it could mean various Ticket shows would be available to stations throughout the great southwest.

  6. Unrelated: Corby's currently having "cord issues" while trying to replay clips from the Van Halen concert from his iphong. A month ago there would have been Cumulus potshots taken to the nth degree, but they just moved on.

Definitely a gag order in place for the hosts/staff, methinks.

    ReplyDelete
  7. They've taken shots at engineering daily. No gag order.

    ReplyDelete
  8. A few things stick out in my mind:
    - Goofy Deer hinted a while ago about possibly improving signal strength, and something cryptic about even switching to FM

    - Ramrod's prediction of the Fan being out of business in 8 months

    - A certain sense of "dead man walking" for staff members *cough* in charge of fixing things

If the two stations do in fact merge, I would guess that little talent from the Fan will be retained beyond contractual obligations. The blowtorch of a signal used by CBS would probably require their existing engineering staff to be retained. Equipment in general would hopefully improve.

The downside, as Ausgang mentioned, could be that there'd be more competition for the JV spots, pregame/postgame show hosts, boardop/production staff, etc. I hope not.

Or, perhaps the signals simply swap...Ticket gets 105.3, and Fan gets the "enchilada end of the AM dial?"

    ReplyDelete
  9. It almost seems beyond imagining that we will see anything even remotely looking like a Ticket/Fan "merger." We're reading quite a bit into these hints of shared content, but they don't on their face negate that reading, either.

So I'm thinking: The Ticket on the strong CBS signal, but maybe Norm is moved aside for -- Elf + Babe?

But wait -- why would Cumulus share any of The Ticket's cream/crop revenue with CBS? There are Cumulus-owned blowtorches that would serve that function perfectly well without having to give up revenue -- as this site has whined about with great frequency.

So I'm thinking that we need to calm down a bit about this. We may hear some things we don't like, but I can't see The Ticket popping up on CBS-owned stations absent some kind of syndication deal, and that wouldn't include clearance in DFW unless the revenue to Cumulus from syndication to KRLD exceeded its current home-grown revenue.

And I don't know nothin' 'bout radio economics, but that seems very unlikely.

Still -- if this means that generic CBS bilge takes the place of local Ticket programming even on weekends, I'm not gonna be happy with that, either.

I don't care what you do with Dan Patrick.

I am having a hard time imagining anything good coming out of this. But neither can I imagine the End of Days for either The Ticket or The Fan.

Still . . . that article said that both would be broadcasting CBS content, and I still say that that is very unlikely to be the same content. So something's gotta give.

Stand by, we've yet to hear from any claimed insiders, some of whom actually are.

  10. It is one word: Consolidation.

Cumulus worked with ClearChannel in the sweetjack/Iheartradio exchange. Plus since four companies (CC, Cum, Entercom, CBS Radio) own the majority of large market stations, they will work with each other to streamline costs.

The Ticket shows are not going to "go regional" or syndicated for the sole fact that they would have to do much more than talk about the DFW professional teams and what they saw on local news or from their Belo partnership. It would be worse than Mad Dog Radio on Sirius/XM.

    ReplyDelete
  11. But . . . Mad Dog Radio actually HAPPENED.

And is "consolidation" which aimed at nationwide or regional shared content anything more than the satellization of terrestrial radio?

In the words of the incisively analytical George DeJohn: Have you thought about it?

    ReplyDelete
  12. OTA radio is essentially dead, but for news talk and NPR.

Plus, the partnership with CBS Radio is an attempt to keep out NBC/Comcast since they are also developing a sports radio network and want to launch in September. That may leave Comcast left with only Entercom stations or mom/pops to use.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It doesn't stop there guys...

I just heard through from a very inside source that... well..

    Now Dr. Salmon is gone.

  14. I'm sure some of you have seen the post on the radio-info site (http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=214441.0), in case you haven't.

Maybe this is what The Ticket needs to get that good signal they've been waiting on the FCC to approve?!? It would seem strange that they would start carrying CBS programming on a bad signal. We can only hope this improves the station.

That might be easier to copy and paste if the link doesn't "link".

  16. For those keeping score, George and Gordon took shots at Cumulus engineering this morning during the Observation Deck.

    ReplyDelete
  17. so anon 9:22, what does the following mean?

"–Opportunities for affiliates to regionalize their lineup by choosing from select programs currently featured on CBS Radio or Cumulus sports stations."

Why wouldn't a Cumulus station in Hillsboro, Waco or even Austin want to beam in the Musers or the Hardline if they've currently got a failing local show?

    ReplyDelete
  18. This site has asked Shaggy's question on several occasions in the past.

Interesting: The e-Brake featured a couple of engineering meltdowns today, following a George introduction that acknowledges that engineering meltdowns aren't as amusing as they used to be, because there are now so many of them.

Can't wait to see what this CBS alliance means. Maybe nothing, maybe a lot. I truly hope it does not mean decreased local weekend coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think it will not mean a lot at all for current KTCK listeners. I would think The Fan would have first shot at all of the CBS network programming and that KTCK would not be able to air the same content. I would also think that the Fan would choose all of the network programming for the weekends.

  21. What in the hell does "Up your Ticket" mean? Is this the most ridiculous ad campaign yet, or what?

  22. Did anyone notice Arnie Spanier on late last night?

  24. A little off topic, but that's what we do in here, isn't it.

Does anyone know of a good app (Android preferably) that will let me read this site and it's comments easily? I've tried a couple, but it's either lacking in not showing comments, or I just don't know how to use it.

    Thanks in advance

  25. T4, sorry you are having problems. I have a Droid and I just go to the site using the browser. Posts are listed. Open a post and all the comments should appear following the post, as they would on a computer, followed by a box for you to leave a new comment.

    Just tried it, worked fine.

If anyone can help our stalwart Confessor T4, please do.

  26. BREAKING NEWS: Our little buddy JUST went live on iHeartradio.

    ReplyDelete
  27. i93 just went live as well. Stream sounds good.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Now all Cumulus Dallas is live on the iHeart. Happened in the last 30 minutes. Enjoy

    ReplyDelete
  29. The big deal about the move to iHeartRadio escapes me. Is it a DVR (or rather a DRR?) TuneIn has been all I've ever needed for years now, but all I hear about is iHR. It's a big deal to Cumulus, obviously, but why does the consumer care so much?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sorry, that last Anon is me.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I just made an observation and announcment. I like TuneIn myself. They are still on there as well.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The move to iHeart is a disaster for the consumer if it also means they will be taken off of TuneIn.

btw, now Corby is on the toilet for all of CQH. This following Danny missing the start if the Pool Party that he was supposed to be presenting.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Mike R. was less than optimistic nor impressed when Danny broke the news that the show was now being picked up on stream. I know he is a cremungen and that's his bit, but this past month he has been much more of a contrarian and sarcastic when subject of management issues come up. Guess its easy to see why with all that's gone on.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can use the web browser too. Just being lazy so I can save some time. Thanks though.

  35. T4 - I use Pulse. It works on my Evo 4G and Kindle Fire. Free app that lets you view many blogs and news post, etc.

  37. Gawd, I heard that hahrrible "Up Your Ticket" promo a couple of times. Embarrassing.

And they know it. Did you catch it on The Hardline yesterday? After it ran, Mike and Corby were heard to say something like: "That's bad." "Really bad."

Please keep this site posted on stream news.

  38. T4 --
Blogger has a mobile version built in to the API. Append the "/?m=1" argument to the end of the URL, like this: http://myticketconfession.blogspot.com/?m=1.

Here's what I do: I have bookmarked that link on my iPhone, so whenever I start typing "mytick" it appears as an autocompleted URL in the iPhone Safari browser. (It helps that I've turned off the history cache, so the autocomplete doesn't revert to the old URL). This isn't iPhone-specific, so it will work for Android or even those weirdos on Blackberry or Windows phone.

  39. The "Up Your Ticket" campaign is every bit as dumb as the one several years back that consisted of supposed listener feedback taken from voice mail messages.

It reeks of desperation when there seems, by the ratings at least, nothing to be desperate about.

Just another sign of Cumulus (and I guess soon to be CBS/Cumulus) imposing its asinine ideas and agenda.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I meant example, not sign!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Pardon me as I divert this thread for a second ... If any of you happen to be situated outside of the borders of the United States of America, or are traveling outside of its borders, would you mind firing up iHeartRadio to see if it allows you to listen? It appears to be blocking me (I'm north of the 44th) and various forums indicate that iHeart puts a blanket ban on listeners outside of the US for licensing reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't have access to a Canadian or European VPN but that should be a good indicator. As far as I have researched...what works on the website should be the same for the app.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I can't get the Ticket on TuneIn right now. Anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hmm, stream not working on iHeart either.

    CUMULUS! THE POWER OF RADIO!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Confirmed, Shaggy. Died around 8:27PM Texas time.

@P1Bdog - seems like three other Canadians I've asked are seeing the same issues. I'd rather not bounce through a US VPN if I can avoid it, but I'll add that to the list of hoops.

Still worried about being able to record, mind you. When iHeart does work, how long does it stay up for at a time?

    ReplyDelete
  46. You know things are bad when you expect failure and are surprised by success.

This iHeartRadio move has been everything we've expected so far.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Stream is down across the board. iHeart, TuneIn, and the ticket website.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is beyond rediculous. Today is the Musers double golf bit, so the stream better be working.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tune In is working.

    ReplyDelete
  50. AP, I will be in Calgary tomorrow through the end of the week. I will try several methods of streaming, including iHR...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks, Scott - Enjoy Calgary!
