Well, It Finally Happened: Peter Gammons Blows off the Musers

In his defense, it's probably a busy day for Boston-based baseball mavens, and baseball mavens generally, after last night's wild multilple final regular-season drama and the conclusion to Beantown's historic late-season swoon.

Still, a broadcast commitment is a broadcast commitment.  This one doesn't mean much to Gammons, and pretty apparently never has, given some of his selections of broadcast locales.  Although the segment isn't as uncomfortable as it used to be, I always felt like Craig and George didn't have much use for it, either.

Dump him.

The Musers should interview her instead.

  1. Gammo works for ESPN (and in the print media), it's a wonder he has time to even do a weekly radio segment as it is. And the segment he did was pretty piss poor. He seems/ed very uninterested in even talking sports. Musers: "Drop it like it's hot!"

  2. Gammons hasn't worked for ESPN for a couple of years.

  3. Yeah, I believe he works for The Sporting News, if I'm correct. His Rays won late last night, so I'm wondering if that wasn't part of the reason. I'm sure the Musers will get him back on, after rescheduling. We'll see as they eluded to that this morning.

  4. His Rays? He's a Boston guy.

  5. He mainly works for the MLB Network. Whatever the case, I think he stinks when he's on the Musers. It's fairly obvious he doesn't want to be on there and is merely collecting a (I'm sure smallish) check. I wish they'd get rid of both him and Lombardi. Stay local and STAY HARD!

  6. RW, you have got to be f'n kidding me! Just finished listening to Bacsik on RaGE. He's now a part of the station. At the very least he's on their postseason Ranger postgame crew. And boy did RW show his ass. "We here at The Fan don't shy away from Twitter controversies." Are you serious, RW? What a hypocrite; what a jerk. Both RW and GW threw The Ticket under the bus a bit (but that's to be expected, as The Ticket does the same thing). I think RW is extremely unlikeable. He deserves GW as a partner. Hell, he orchestrated it. So of course he deserves GW's b.s. (I think we all know that RW will be posting up some sort of comment under an assumed or anonymous name just as soon as he reads this and they go to break.)

  7. Hmmm.

Greg does not have a history of reacting well to adding a strong personality to a broadcast where he's supposed to be one of them.

The first act in "Hard Lie Redux"?

    Buckle up, buttercup.

  8. Yeah, you may be right Shaggy. I knew he was from Boston, but I thought I read or heard somewhere (thought I heard it from him on the Musers one time) that he lived in the Tampa area and was a strong fan.

  9. Part of what makes the segment so poor is that Gammons comments on everything from a national standpoint. He makes comparisons to things and goes off on baseball tangents that probably fly over the Musers heads considering baseball is not their strong suit. I like Lombardi though. He's pretty much a genius when it comes to scouting, developing, and things of that nature.

  10. Following up on the Anon above - Lombardi's interviews used to suck too, until the Musers developed a personal rapport with him during a super-bowl. Lombardi and Gordo hit it off over their opposing JFK views, and since then, the interviews are an enjoyable listen....before this, they'd actually keep a running counter of every time Lombardi said "ultimately" just to keep the listeners engaged.

While I'm on the topic of weekly Muser interviews...Aikman is flat-out amazing. I really, really enjoy those interviews, and consider him to be the crown jewel of the Muser's arsenal of sports-friends.

  11. I agree with you on Aikman, ap. I wish they could get a regular segment with Moose Johnston too. Every time someone has him on, it's good stuff.

  12. Plainsman, I think it's high time that you did a piece on TC. I know you've stated your reasons why you haven't, and under what conditions you will, but the last week of heavy TC air-time must satisfy your requirements. Yes? In my opinion, the young man seems to be skating on thin ice. From his attitude regarding the Green Man suit GBL punishment (go to Unticket to refresh your memory; his "tude" is downright annoying) to his overall "I can get away with it, I'm above it" stance on and with just about everything and everyone... TC's out of control. Not too mention his popping on/in almost every conversation at every turn with some not-so-funny quip. The kid seems to have grown too big for his britches. And the kid, like many a rookie pitching sensations, after being exposed a bit too much...pretty much has a bag. Nowadays when I hear his voice, I turn the volume down. If you read this TC, please stop with smart guy, argumentative routine. You're not the "logician" you think you are.

  14. After doing a little Tweeter dumpster diving (there's too much to post up here), it looks like Greggo has been reaching out to every Ticket host. On many occasions. It also looks like he might be having a conversation with Rhyner. If that's so, then, as far as I can tell, Rhyner is tweeting privately to Greggo, while Greggo seems to be tweeting publicly with Rhyner. This does seem to be the case. Unless Greggo is so out of it that he's tweeting as if Rhyner is answering his questions. I find that hard to believe. Don't know what the deal is, but I think somethings afoot, in the workings, or at the very least maybe a reconciliation of sorts is happening.

  15. When I say reconciliation I mean in the AA 12-Step sense, a la amends. Didn't mean to imply an original Hardline reunion. As nutty as we can all get in these comments sections from time to time, I don't think any of us would go that far!

  16. @the Anon who wrote about TC:

Interesting that you weighed in. I don't get to hear the entire broadcast day, and BaD very seldom, but I had the impression that following what I thought was a pretty dubious experiment teaming Jake, T.C., and Mike on The Hardline during one of Corby's absences, he had sunk from sight. I heard him jump on a couple of times, but it was pretty infrequent and didn't derail the show. I didn't hear hosts mentioning him much.

You seem to have heard some counterexamples, however.

So I will listen more closely. Yes, maybe it's time to deal with the T.C. Issue.

But first we need to deal with the latest Greggo eruption.

  17. TC is a prominent player on BaD Radio--he is (was? I really have no clue what his current status at the Ticket is) their intern, so he is on fairly often. You really owe it to yourself to spend more time listening to BaD Radio, since it is the best show out of the entire Ticket. And it's been pretty poor without Bob, actually. They can much more easily handle a Dan-less show than a Bob-less show. And Donovan is way overexposed as the 2nd fiddle rather than a background player.

    ReplyDelete
  18. out of the entire Ticket lineup, is what I meant to say.

Since I started reading your blog you are constantly saying that you rarely listen to BaD Radio--you could at least download the weekly wrapup on the podcast and give it a go rather than listening to the freaking Soul Patch or Race Week.

  19. Shaggy,

Agree completely re: Bob-less BaD Radio. As much as I've claimed to disdain straight-up sports talk in the past, Bob is the beef in that hamburger.

Regarding TC, he's always carried an element of clubhouse tension with him, but these recent explorations of the Top Cat phenomenon have had a much more threatening and much less jokey feel than in the past. It's even been very, very tense on It's Just Banter lately. TC seems to be feeling major heat.

  20. Some of the foregoing Confessors are commenting on T.C.'s profile more expertly than I ever could. Not sure I have much to add, although you can be sure I would add it at agonizing length.

  21. I've been a TC defender in the past, but I have to agree with one of the anonymum about his attitude lately. He seems to be letting some of his visibility and limited success go to his head. Maybe it's just a phase, maybe he'll realize what he's got, maybe someone will take a mentor role and talk him down, but something's got to change. I haven't listened to an IJB lately; this opinion is solely based on his on-air role over the past few weeks.
